The shortlist includes the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue. To choose among them, compare like-for-like seats-up and seats-folded figures, then check whether the cargo area can handle your actual load.
Why cargo-volume figures can disagree
A cargo figure is useful only when you know which seats are in place and how the vehicle was measured. “Behind the rear seats” describes a different configuration from a maximum figure with those seats folded. Measurement methods can also differ between manufacturers and comparison sites, so figures from separate sources should not be treated as a precise head-to-head test.
Honda’s 2023 CR-V materials illustrate the issue. Its specification sheet labels its figures “Behind First Row, Standard/Max”: 39.3 cubic feet standard and 76.5 cubic feet maximum. The footnote says the measure is based on SAE J1100 and, where applicable, includes floor space between rows with seats in their forward-most and upright position. Honda’s launch release instead gives 36.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 76.5 cubic feet with the 60/40-split rear seatbacks folded. A separate J.D. Power comparison lists 37.5 cubic feet behind the RAV4’s rear seats and 69.8 cubic feet with the seats folded, alongside CR-V figures. Those are secondary comparison figures, not directly interchangeable with Honda’s manufacturer specifications; check the trim and configuration before making a strict comparison. The source is J.D. What the published comparisons establish
Honda CR-V
The CR-V has multiple published cargo figures, but the seats-up value depends on the source and stated measurement basis. Honda reports 76.5 cubic feet maximum in both of the cited materials when the rear seats are folded. Use the official specification sheet’s labels and footnote when interpreting its 39.3-cubic-foot standard figure.
Toyota RAV4
J.D. Power’s 2023 comparison reports 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 69.8 cubic feet with them folded. Treat those numbers as comparison-source data rather than a like-for-like manufacturer-specification match to Honda’s figures.

CR-V Hybrid and Sportage Hybrid
An Associated Press article republishing Edmunds’ 2023 comparison says both the CR-V Hybrid and Sportage Hybrid have more than 39 cubic feet behind the second row, and describes their cargo room as even. That statement applies to those two hybrid models in that comparison; it does not establish a ranking of every compact SUV or every powertrain. Read the AP/Edmunds comparison.
Forester, Tucson, CX-5 and Rogue
The available comparison material includes the Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue in its road-test group, but does not provide a complete, consistently measured cargo-volume table for all four alongside the CR-V, RAV4 and Sportage. How to judge cargo-area usability
Cubic feet do not tell you whether a stroller clears the opening, whether a flat-pack box fits between the wheel housings, or whether a long item can ride without giving up every rear seat. Evaluate the cargo bay with the shape and access that matter for your routine.
- Opening and floor: Check liftgate opening width and height, the shape of the bay, and how high you must lift heavy items over the load sill.
- Long-item fit: Look at usable floor length with the seats up and whether the split rear seat lets you fold one section while keeping another passenger seat available.
- Storage below the floor: Inspect the underfloor area in the exact trim and powertrain you are considering; storage can affect how you organize smaller items.
- Hooks and tie-downs: Check where the hooks are located and whether they suit bags or cargo you need to secure. MotorTrend noted the Forester’s cargo hooks, including ceiling-mounted hooks, as well as underfloor storage and a distinctive rubber mat.
- Seat-folding operation: Try the release and fold mechanism from both the passenger area and cargo area if available, and confirm whether the folded seats leave a floor that works for your load.
- Configuration: Verify the specific trim, hybrid or non-hybrid powertrain, and drivetrain. Do not assume every version has the same cargo arrangement.
A practical way to compare the seven SUVs
- Start with your normal load. Measure the largest item you regularly carry, including its length, width and height, and decide how many rear seats you need to retain.
- Compare the same seating position. Put seats-up figures beside seats-up figures and maximum, seats-folded figures beside equivalent figures. Keep the source and measurement basis attached to each number.
- Check the exact vehicle. Confirm trim and powertrain, then inspect the opening, floor, underfloor storage and seat-folding setup in person.
- Test the awkward item. If possible, bring a representative box, stroller or other bulky load. A test fit is more useful than relying on a volume number when the item’s shape is the constraint.
For a broad starting point, MotorTrend’s road test groups the CR-V, RAV4, Forester, Sportage, Tucson, CX-5 and Rogue. The evidence here supports that as a practical shortlist, not as a complete inventory of every compact SUV sold in 2023.
