The best car for a family of six is the one that fits all six people, their child restraints and their everyday cargo in the configuration you will actually use. Start by comparing minivans such as the 2026 Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna with three-row SUVs such as the 2026 Subaru Ascent and Ford Expedition. None is a universal winner: seating varies by trim, and a stated passenger capacity does not prove that your particular child seats and luggage will fit comfortably.
What should a family of six look for?
Begin with the trips your family actually makes. If six people ride most days, test the vehicle with all six seats occupied and the cargo area loaded. If you sometimes carry a seventh person, verify that the exact trim has a usable seventh position; a model name or maximum seat count is not enough.
For families using child restraints, confirm both the permitted installation positions and practical access to the rear row. Vehicle manuals and child-seat maker instructions should guide installation. Do not assume that every seat can accept every restraint, or that a listed tether anchor is also a lower-anchor position.
- Count how many people need to ride together on a typical trip, and whether a spare seat is useful.
- Bring your own child seats and try the intended seating positions and installation methods.
- Check cargo room with all rows in use, then load the bags, stroller, sports equipment or other items you regularly carry.
- Try getting passengers into and out of the third row with the second row configured as you need it.
- Consider drivetrain, weather, roads, parking and hauling needs alongside seating.
- Review current independent crash-test and child-seat usability information for the exact model year you are considering.
Minivan or three-row SUV?
A minivan is a sensible place to start when daily child-seat management, passenger access and carrying luggage with all seats occupied are top priorities. A three-row SUV belongs on the shortlist when you prefer that format or need a particular feature such as standard all-wheel drive. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent findings about which vehicle is best.

How do the seating and child-seat details compare?
Honda Odyssey
The 2026 Odyssey’s seating flexibility is relevant if your family needs to change the cabin layout for passengers or cargo. Honda lists three second-row LATCH positions and two more in the outboard third-row seats. Its specifications distinguish lower-anchor positions from tether-anchor positions, so check the exact seating position and installation method in the vehicle information and child-seat instructions. Toyota Sienna
Toyota says the 2026 Sienna LE seats up to eight with bench seats in both rear rows. The 2026 brochure lists five LATCH locations: lower anchors on all three second-row seats, plus the passenger-side and center third-row seats. Subaru Ascent and Ford Expedition
The Ascent is offered in seven- and eight-passenger configurations, while the Expedition Active can seat up to eight with a second-row bench or up to seven with second-row captain’s chairs. In either case, do not choose based on the maximum seat count alone: inspect the exact arrangement and test access to the third row with your child seats installed. How much cargo room matters with six aboard?
Use the cargo figure that corresponds to the seats you will keep in place. The Odyssey illustrates why configuration matters: its 32.8-cubic-foot figure is behind the third row, whereas the 155.7-cubic-foot maximum is reported after removing the second-row seats and folding the third row. The maximum figure is not a measure of luggage room with six people riding.

For the Ascent, Subaru lists up to 75.6 cubic feet, but the cited model page does not establish that amount with all rows occupied. The cited Sienna and Expedition sources likewise do not provide an all-seats-in-use cargo value here. Compare these vehicles by opening the liftgate and loading your actual gear with the seats in the positions you need—not by comparing maximum capacities that may assume different cabin layouts.
What safety information should you check?
Look up the exact model year in current independent crash-test and child-seat usability resources before deciding. IIHS’s current minivan summary, accessed in 2026, includes entries for the 2026 Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival, as well as a 2027 Honda Odyssey entry. That Odyssey entry is for 2027, not 2026; do not treat it as a rating for the 2026 model. Check the IIHS current minivan ratings table for the model year and specific rating details.

For installation, follow both the restraint manufacturer’s directions and the vehicle instructions. Kia’s 2026 owner’s manual, for example, identifies lower anchors only in designated rear outboard positions and warns against using lower anchors in the center. That is a Kia-specific instruction, not a rule to apply to another vehicle; consult the manual for the model you are evaluating. Kia’s 2026 child-restraint instructions explain its guidance.

Start with a minivan if access and cabin flexibility lead
Compare the Odyssey and Sienna first if your daily routine involves several child restraints, frequent third-row use or carrying luggage while every seat is occupied. Their seating layouts and anchor locations still need to be checked against your family’s actual restraints and the trim you plan to buy.

Keep an SUV on the list if its format or features fit your needs
The Ascent is worth considering if standard all-wheel drive and its listed ground clearance matter for your driving conditions. The Expedition offers different seating arrangements depending on whether the second row has a bench or captain’s chairs. These attributes may help narrow your choices, but neither establishes a universal advantage for every family.
