There is no single best compact sedan for every Indian buyer in October 2026. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is the most straightforward choice if you want a 1.2-litre petrol sedan with a manual or AMT and the equipment claims listed by Maruti. The Honda Amaze is the one to investigate if a CVT automatic, six airbags and Honda Sensing matter. Hyundai’s Aura has the lowest published starting price in this set and offers petrol and Hy-CNG configurations. The Tata Tigor remains a legitimate rival, but its current official October 2026 specifications, prices and safety equipment must be verified before it can be compared on equal terms.
Your decision should be based on a same-city, same-date on-road quote for the exact variant, the transmission you can live with in traffic, fuel availability, rear-seat access, safety evidence for the exact generation and local service support. The figures below separate confirmed manufacturer information from estimates that require a dealer check.

Which compact sedan fits your use?
Start with the job the car must do rather than with a national ranking. A family that drives mostly in a congested city, a chauffeur carrying older parents and a buyer who regularly travels between towns can reasonably choose different cars from this shortlist.
| Buyer priority | Most relevant model to investigate | Why it may fit | What to verify before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest published entry price | Hyundai Aura | Hyundai lists a ₹5,99,990 ex-showroom starting price and petrol and Hy-CNG configurations. | City on-road total, CNG variant availability, equipment on the quoted trim and delivery timing. |
| Manual or automated-manual choice | Maruti Suzuki Dzire | Maruti describes a 1.2-litre petrol engine with manual and AMT options. | Exact AMT variant, low-speed behaviour on your route, waiting period and the applicability of the stated safety rating to the car you are buying. |
| Conventional automatic priority | Honda Amaze | Autocar India’s 5 October 2026 comparison describes a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with manual or CVT transmissions. | Current CVT availability by variant, Delhi versus your city price, test-drive response in traffic and the safety equipment on that trim. |
| Tata ownership preference | Tata Tigor | It is listed among the segment rivals. | Obtain a current Tata Motors brochure and written quote; no comparable October 2026 powertrain, price and safety data was published. |
This is a shortlist, not a claim that one model wins every category. A Tata Aeris entry appearing in an aggregator result should be treated as unverified until its identity and current market status are confirmed; it is not included as a fifth recommendation here.

Price: compare the bill you will actually pay
Ex-showroom prices are only one line on a purchase invoice. Registration, insurance, taxes, optional accessories, handling charges where lawful, finance costs and current manufacturer or dealer offers can materially change the amount due. Compare the same city, date, fuel type, transmission and equipment level.
| Model or source | Published figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Aura | ₹5,99,990 | Hyundai Motor India’s stated ex-showroom starting price on its 2026 pricing page; not an on-road quote and local applicability must be checked. |
| Honda Amaze | ₹7,65,400 | Honda Cars India’s starting ex-showroom Delhi price on its specifications page; it is Delhi-specific and can change. |
| Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Ahmedabad estimate | ₹7.15–10.69 lakh | CarWale aggregator on-road estimate for Ahmedabad; date, variant mix and assumptions need independent validation. |
| Honda Amaze, Ahmedabad estimate | ₹8.77–11.30 lakh | CarWale aggregator on-road estimate for Ahmedabad; not a national or same-variant comparison. |
| Hyundai Aura, Ahmedabad estimate | ₹6.95–9.88 lakh | CarWale aggregator on-road estimate for Ahmedabad; verify with a current dealer quotation. |
| Tata Tigor | Not stated | No current, official October 2026 price was published in the cited material. |
Use those figures only as orientation. The Ahmedabad ranges may combine different variants, fuel choices and transmission types, so they cannot prove that one car is cheaper than another. Ask each dealer for an itemised quotation showing ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, accessories, discounts, taxes and the final on-road total. Keep the quotation date on your comparison sheet.
A practical quote checklist
- Choose one city and one purchase date.
- Write down the exact variant, engine or fuel type and transmission for each car.
- Request the manufacturer price, registration estimate and insurance premium separately.
- Ask which discount is a current offer, which is conditional on finance or exchange, and when it expires.
- Reject any comparison that quietly changes trim, fuel or transmission to produce a lower headline number.
- Confirm the promised delivery car’s vehicle identification details and equipment before registration.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire: the clearly documented all-round starting point
Maruti Suzuki’s current Dzire page describes a 1.2-litre petrol engine, with manual and AMT transmission options. That gives buyers two distinct driving choices: a conventional manual for those who prefer direct control, and an automated manual transmission for clutch-free operation. The AMT should be driven on the same steep ramps, junctions and stop-start roads where you will use it; a short, open-road test cannot reveal whether its shift timing suits you.
The Tool Desk

Maruti’s page states that Dzire has six airbags across all variants and a five-star Global NCAP rating. Treat both statements as model- and source-specific claims, not as a universal ranking of every Dzire ever sold. Before signing, confirm the generation tested, the crash-test protocol, the production period covered and whether the exact Indian variant carries the listed equipment. A dealer’s verbal statement is not a substitute for the current specification sheet.
Who should shortlist Dzire
- Drivers who want a choice between manual and AMT rather than a CVT.
- Families for whom the stated six-airbag equipment and the manufacturer’s cited crash result are important, subject to exact-version verification.
- Buyers whose local Maruti workshop coverage is stronger than the alternatives in their area.
No current official fuel-economy, boot-capacity, ride-quality, long-term-reliability or tested-AMT figure is published for the Dzire in the cited specifications. Do not infer those results from the engine size or the brand name; assess them on your route and with a written specification.
Honda Amaze: investigate it for a CVT and active safety equipment
Honda Cars India’s specifications page reports a starting ex-showroom Delhi price of ₹7,65,400. That number is not a nationwide on-road price. Transporting the same car to another state, choosing a different trim or adding insurance and registration will produce a different total.
Honda’s current product information describes six airbags and Honda Sensing among the safety equipment. Confirm the exact variant’s equipment list: names used in a brochure do not guarantee that every feature is standard on every trim, and an option shown in a display car may not be included in the quoted car.

Transmission and engine
Autocar India’s comparison, updated 5 October 2026, describes the Amaze with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and manual or CVT transmissions, and lists Dzire, Aura and Tigor as rivals. Because variant line-ups can change, check the current Honda price list before treating the CVT as available on a particular trim. Take the car through crawling traffic, a tight parking manoeuvre and an uphill start; those situations matter more to an automatic buyer than a brief highway run.
Who should shortlist Amaze
- Urban drivers who specifically want a conventional CVT automatic and are prepared to verify the current variant.
- Families that value the stated six-airbag and Honda Sensing equipment, after checking what is standard on their chosen trim.
- Buyers who have a nearby Honda service outlet and can obtain a competitive, itemised quote.
No independent comparative crash statistic, fuel-consumption result or long-term reliability finding is cited for the Amaze. Honda’s equipment claims and the Global NCAP statement attributed to Maruti are not directly comparable measurements.
Hyundai Aura: the price-led and CNG option
Hyundai’s official pricing page lists an ex-showroom starting price of ₹5,99,990 for the Aura and describes petrol and Hy-CNG configurations. The lower starting figure can be useful for a tightly controlled budget, but it does not tell you the on-road price of a CNG or higher-equipment version. Ask the dealer to quote the exact fuel and trim you intend to register.
Hyundai’s highlights page gives dimensions of 3,995 mm in length, 1,680 mm in width and 1,520 mm in height. It lists E, S, Corporate, SX and SX(O) configurations. Recheck the current brochure for the equipment attached to each configuration; a trim name alone is not evidence that a particular safety, convenience or infotainment feature is included.
When CNG changes the decision
A Hy-CNG Aura can make sense when CNG stations are convenient on your normal routes and the purchase premium, boot compromises and refuelling pattern work for your household. Compare the total cost of the CNG variant, not the petrol starting price, and ask how the spare-wheel or luggage arrangement affects the items you carry. Hyundai’s cited pages do not provide a verified 2026 fuel-economy figure, so calculate running costs only after obtaining a current official consumption figure and your local petrol and CNG prices.
Who should shortlist Aura
- Buyers for whom the published entry price is the first budget filter.
- Drivers with reliable access to CNG who want to evaluate a factory Hy-CNG configuration.
- Customers whose local Hyundai dealer can supply the required variant and provide clear written equipment details.
No directly comparable safety rating or complete October 2026 equipment table for every Aura trim is published. Do not assume that the entry version has the same safety specification as a top trim.
Tata Tigor: keep it on the list, but do not fill gaps from memory
Autocar India’s 5 October 2026 comparison lists the Tigor among the segment rivals. However, no current official Tata Motors source confirming October 2026 variants, prices, powertrains and safety equipment is published. That is a reason to verify, not a reason to invent numbers or remove the car automatically.

How to verify a Tigor properly
- Ask a Tata Motors outlet for the current brochure and price list for your city.
- Record the exact fuel type, transmission and variant code on the quotation.
- Request the official safety-equipment list for that variant and the applicable crash-test evidence for the same generation.
- Drive the car with the intended rear passengers and luggage, then compare its on-road total against the other cars using the same worksheet.
- Check parts, scheduled-service and roadside-assistance terms in writing rather than relying on an older online listing.
Until those documents are in hand, a Tigor row should read “not stated” for any value you cannot verify. An aggregator range or an older review is not a substitute for a current manufacturer specification.

Automatic buyers: compare the mechanism, not just the word “automatic”
The shortlist includes different transmission types. Dzire is described with an AMT, while the Amaze comparison identifies a CVT; these systems can feel different in low-speed traffic. AMT shifts are automated versions of manual-gear changes, whereas a CVT changes its ratio continuously. Neither description predicts your personal preference.
- Drive each exact variant in your usual congestion for at least enough time to encounter crawling, a stop line, a speed breaker and a parking manoeuvre.
- Test a gentle hill start and a tight turn. Notice delay, creep, braking modulation and how easily a passenger’s head moves during shifts.
- Check whether the quoted car has the transmission you drove; a showroom may have a different demonstrator.
- Price the automatic variant separately. Do not use the manual starting price to justify an automatic budget.
- Ask about warranty coverage and maintenance requirements for the exact transmission, using current manufacturer documentation.
Current Aura and Tigor transmission details are not stated in the cited manufacturer materials, so obtain their official variant sheets before placing them in an automatic comparison.
Fuel choice: petrol versus Hy-CNG
Fuel availability is a practical constraint, not a badge preference. Aura is the only model in this comparison explicitly described with both petrol and Hy-CNG configurations. Dzire and Amaze are documented here with petrol engines. Tigor’s current fuel line-up requires confirmation.
- Map the CNG stations on every regular route and check opening hours and queue conditions.
- Compare the CNG variant’s on-road price with the petrol car of similar equipment.
- Estimate annual kilometres using your own records; do not substitute a brochure or aggregator assumption.
- Allow for luggage needs and the refuelling time that fits your schedule.
- Use current local fuel prices and a verified official consumption figure when calculating payback.
If you cannot refuel conveniently, a cheaper CNG running estimate on paper may not be useful in daily life.

Safety: make an exact-model comparison
Safety claims need three separate checks: equipment, crash-test evidence and applicability to the car you are buying.
| Model | Safety information established | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dzire | Maruti states six airbags across variants and a five-star Global NCAP rating. | Confirm the tested generation, protocol and current applicability to the quoted Indian car. |
| Amaze | Honda lists six airbags and Honda Sensing. | The available material does not provide a directly comparable crash-test rating; verify trim-level standard equipment. |
| Aura | No complete, comparable current safety table is published. | Check the current brochure for the exact configuration. |
| Tigor | No current official October 2026 safety specification is published. | Obtain Tata Motors documentation for the exact version. |
Do not turn one manufacturer’s rating statement into a league table. Crash tests can differ by protocol, year, market and vehicle generation. Record the source, date and model identity alongside every safety claim.

Rear-seat and chauffeur use
For parents or other frequent rear passengers, sit in the back before comparing prices. Check door opening angle, step-in height, seat-cushion support, headroom, visibility, grab handles and whether the front passenger can move without compromising the driver’s position. Try the seat with the footwear and cushions your passengers actually use.
Load the normal combination of bags, mobility aids or work equipment. No directly comparable boot capacities are published for these cars, so a showroom inspection is more reliable than assuming that every compact sedan carries the same load. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the spare-wheel and luggage arrangement on the exact fuel version, especially a CNG car.

Service access, warranty and ownership risk
Local support can outweigh a small specification advantage. List the nearest authorised workshop for each brand, its distance from home and work, booking method, roadside-assistance terms and the warranty document that applies to the quoted variant. Ask for scheduled-service intervals and typical consumables in writing; do not treat an informal estimate as a fixed cost.
No cited source provides a comparative long-term reliability result. A brand reputation, online anecdote or one owner’s post is not a market-wide statistic. Use a pre-delivery inspection, read the warranty exclusions and keep all commitments on the quotation.
A decision process that survives changing prices
- Set a delivered budget. Include registration, insurance and unavoidable fees for your city, not only the ex-showroom headline.
- Choose non-negotiables. Mark automatic, CNG, six airbags, active safety, rear-seat access and service distance as must-have or nice-to-have.
- Build a same-variant sheet. Put Dzire, Amaze, Aura and Tigor in rows and record only figures confirmed for the same date and city.
- Obtain written quotes. Keep discounts, finance conditions and accessories separate from the mandatory on-road amount.
- Test drive the real use case. Include traffic, parking, a speed breaker, a slope and the intended passengers.
- Verify safety and fuel. Match every claim to the exact generation, variant and official document.
- Check supply. A low quote is not useful if the required variant is unavailable or the promised delivery date does not work.
- Recheck on booking day. Prices, taxes, insurance and promotional offers can change; refresh the quotation before payment.
Bottom line for October 2026
Shortlist the Dzire when its documented manual/AMT choice and Maruti’s stated safety equipment fit your priorities. Investigate the Amaze when a CVT and Honda’s listed six-airbag and Honda Sensing package are important. Put the Aura first on a price-led or CNG-led shortlist, but compare the exact Hy-CNG trim rather than its petrol entry price. Keep the Tigor in contention only after Tata Motors supplies current variant, price, powertrain and safety details.
The responsible winner is the car that wins your own worksheet: same city, same date, same fuel and transmission, comparable equipment, a comfortable test drive and an authorised service point you can actually reach.
