The budget covers inexpensive city hatchbacks, family sedans, compact and larger SUVs, and six- or seven-seat MPVs. The right choice depends on your regular passenger count, luggage, parking conditions, preferred transmission, and the exact CNG variant sold in your city.
Use the shortlist below as a decision guide, not as a tested ranking. Manufacturer prices, trims and equipment can change, and the available evidence does not establish a reliable real-world mileage or long-term reliability winner. Always inspect the CNG car’s boot, drive the CNG variant, and confirm the current ex-showroom and on-road price before booking.

Quick answer: the best CNG car depends on how you drive
For tight city parking and the lowest purchase budget, start with small hatchbacks such as the Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio, Wagon R, Tiago, Grand i10 Nios, C3 or similar entry-level options in the current market. Their compact dimensions are easier to place in traffic and narrow parking spaces, but you must check rear-seat room, boot capacity and whether the desired trim has the transmission you want.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a mixed city-and-highway family car, compare the Dzire, Swift, Baleno, Tiago and Altroz. These cars are more usable for regular family travel than the smallest hatchbacks, yet their CNG cylinders still occupy luggage space. Check the CNG-specific equipment and the exact boot arrangement rather than assuming the petrol model’s specification applies.

If you want a higher seating position, look at the Punch, Exter, Brezza, Fronx, Nexon, XUV 3XO and Taisor. Entry CNG trims can sit well below the ₹30-lakh ceiling, while better-equipped versions cost more; the model’s headline price range is not the same as the price of every CNG variant.
For frequent six- or seven-passenger use, the Ertiga, Rumion, XL6 and Eeco are the relevant MPV choices in the current guide. Their usefulness depends on the actual seating layout and the luggage left after all seats are occupied, so inspect the vehicle with your normal passenger load in mind.
For a larger SUV body and cabin aimed at longer family trips, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Grand Vitara and Victoris are grouped in the roughly ₹15–20 lakh CNG budget band by the current guide. Confirm the exact CNG trim, equipment and city price before comparing them.
What “under ₹30 lakh” really means
The ₹30-lakh limit is generous for factory-fitted CNG cars in India. The current Autocar India guide places available models across bands from below ₹6 lakh to about ₹20 lakh, so the ceiling does not mean every shortlisted car costs close to ₹30 lakh. A model may have a CNG version only in selected trims, while its most expensive petrol or automatic trim pushes the model’s overall price range higher.
Prices also vary by city, registration rules, insurance, tax, handling charges and optional accessories. CarWale’s “Best CNG Cars Under 30 Lakh in India” listing is useful for discovering models, but its figures do not consistently isolate the CNG variant, city or fees. Treat an aggregator number as a lead, then verify the manufacturer-listed CNG trim and your dealer’s current quotation.
Best CNG cars by buyer need
| Buyer priority | Models to investigate | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Compact city commuting | Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio, Wagon R, Tiago and comparable small hatchbacks | Rear-seat comfort, turning and parking ease, boot left after the cylinder, available gearbox and local CNG price |
| Family car for city and occasional highway trips | Dzire, Swift, Baleno, Tiago and Altroz | CNG performance with passengers, luggage capacity, safety and convenience equipment on the exact CNG trim |
| Higher seating position | Punch, Exter, Brezza, Fronx, Nexon, XUV 3XO and Taisor | Entry versus better-equipped trim, CNG-specific ground clearance and boot design, transmission availability |
| More usable luggage space in a CNG SUV | Nexon iCNG | Tata’s twin-cylinder layout, quoted 321-litre boot, engine output and current variant specification |
| Six- or seven-passenger family use | Ertiga, Rumion, XL6 and Eeco | Actual seating configuration, third-row access, luggage space with all seats in use and CNG tank placement |
| Larger SUV proportions for family travel | Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Grand Vitara and Victoris | Current CNG trim price, equipment, highway comfort and luggage capacity with passengers aboard |
Small hatchbacks: easiest for crowded cities
Alto K10 and S-Presso
These are the budget-oriented end of the CNG market and make sense when the priority is a small footprint and low entry price. Their upright, compact bodies can be easier to manoeuvre through congested lanes and fit into older apartment parking spaces. The compromise is limited luggage room once the CNG cylinder is installed and less relaxed highway carrying ability than a larger hatchback or sedan. Compare the number of occupants you regularly carry, not just the showroom price.
Celerio
The Celerio is worth considering when a city buyer wants a small car but does not want to move straight to the most basic option. Check the CNG variant’s equipment, rear-seat comfort and gearbox. Do not assume that an automatic or AMT offered on a petrol version is also available with CNG; transmission availability is variant-specific.

Wagon R
The Wagon R’s tall cabin is useful for passengers who value an upright seating position and easy entry. Its practical shape does not remove the need to check the boot: the cylinder generally occupies part of the luggage area in CNG cars. A family should place its normal bags in the actual car before signing the purchase order.
Tiago, Grand i10 Nios and C3
These hatchbacks broaden the choice for buyers who want a more substantial cabin than the smallest city cars. The Tiago also appears in the mixed-use family shortlist, while the Grand i10 Nios and C3 should be compared on local CNG availability, trim equipment, rear-seat space and service support. The current guide identifies them as CNG models, but it does not provide a single, consistently verified price-and-efficiency table for every variant.
Family hatchbacks and sedans: balance passengers, luggage and running cost
Swift and Baleno
Swift and Baleno are natural candidates for buyers who spend most time in town but make occasional highway journeys. The Baleno’s larger hatchback body can be useful for family space, while the Swift suits buyers who prefer a smaller footprint. For either model, check whether the desired CNG trim has the features you expect and how much usable luggage remains beside or above the cylinder.
Dzire
The Dzire is the sedan option for buyers who want a separate boot and a familiar compact-sedan footprint. Maruti announced an automatic S-CNG Dzire in September 2026, expanding the choice beyond manual-only CNG cars. The announced starting ex-showroom price was ₹8,53,100; it is a manufacturer-announced starting price and must be checked against the current city and variant listing.
Altroz
The Altroz gives a CNG buyer a larger hatchback alternative with a family-oriented cabin. Compare the actual CNG boot opening and floor, not the petrol brochure’s luggage figure. A test drive with adults in the rear seat will reveal whether the CNG calibration and available performance suit your normal roads.
Other compact sedans
The current market taxonomy also includes the Aura and Tigor as CNG sedans. Their appeal is the sedan body and potential value, but the correct choice depends on the exact trim, rear-seat needs, boot usability and city price. Neither the guide nor the cited sources support declaring one of these a universal mileage or reliability winner.
Higher-riding CNG cars and compact SUVs
Punch and Exter
The Punch and Exter address buyers who want a higher seating position without moving to a large SUV. They can be easier to enter and provide the visual proportions many urban families prefer. Compare their CNG-specific boot arrangements, rear-seat width, ground-clearance requirements for your routes and the equipment included in the entry trim.

Brezza, Fronx and Taisor
Brezza, Fronx and Taisor extend the choice into larger or more crossover-like shapes. They may suit buyers who carry more than a small hatchback can handle, but “SUV” does not guarantee a large CNG boot. Inspect the floor, spare-wheel arrangement and luggage opening in person, and verify whether the trim you can afford is manual-only or offers another gearbox.

Tata’s September 24, 2024 launch release describes the Nexon iCNG as using twin cylinders to provide a quoted 321-litre boot. The same manufacturer announcement lists a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine producing 100 PS and 170 Nm, direct CNG starting and automatic switching between petrol and CNG. These are launch specifications and manufacturer claims, not independent measurements; confirm that the current CNG variant retains them.
The twin-cylinder layout is particularly relevant to a buyer who needs an SUV shape and more practical luggage capacity than a single large cylinder may allow. Open the tailgate, lift the floor and place your own bags inside. The quoted capacity alone cannot tell you whether a stroller, weekly groceries or holiday luggage will fit conveniently.
MPVs for six or seven people
Ertiga, Rumion and XL6
The Ertiga, Rumion and XL6 are the main family-MPV choices in the current guide for regular six- or seven-passenger use. They make sense when carrying capacity matters more than a compact footprint. Before purchase, sit in every row, check access to the last row, and load luggage with all passenger seats occupied. A nominal seven-seat layout can leave little useful cargo room for a long trip.
Eeco
The Eeco is another MPV choice listed for families carrying many people. Its suitability is highly dependent on the exact seating configuration and the comfort and safety equipment of that version. Confirm the registration category, available CNG trim, passenger count permitted for the vehicle and usable luggage area with a dealer before comparing it with the more car-like MPVs.

Larger SUV choices: Hyryder, Grand Vitara and Victoris
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Grand Vitara and Victoris occupy the larger-SUV end of the CNG shortlist. The current guide places this group in a ₹15–20 lakh CNG budget band and recommends it for buyers seeking a larger cabin and SUV proportions for longer family travel. That band is a guide, not a guaranteed current price for every trim or city.
These vehicles should be compared on the exact CNG variant’s equipment, seating comfort, boot dimensions and highway behaviour with passengers aboard. Do not transfer features from a petrol, hybrid or top trim to the CNG version. Ask the dealer to identify the CNG badge and variant code on the quotation and registration documents.

Automatic CNG cars: the 2026 change to watch
Most CNG variants remain manual-only, with only a handful offering AMT or automatic choices. Maruti Suzuki’s September 2026 announcement introduced automatic S-CNG versions of the Swift, Dzire and Baleno using its five-speed Auto Gear Shift (AMT).
| Automatic S-CNG model | Manufacturer-announced starting ex-showroom price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Swift | ₹7,92,400 | Starting price announced by Maruti Suzuki in September 2026; verify city and variant |
| Dzire | ₹8,53,100 | Starting price announced by Maruti Suzuki in September 2026; verify city and variant |
| Baleno | ₹8,32,400 | Starting price announced by Maruti Suzuki in September 2026; verify city and variant |
Maruti reports 36.47 km/kg for the automatic Dzire, attributing the certification to JATO Dynamics on September 18, 2026. This is a manufacturer-reported certified figure, not a real-world result. Traffic, passenger load, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use, driving style and CNG quality can all change consumption.
Maruti’s release also records a 58% year-over-year increase in S-CNG sales in the first quarter of the referenced year and 83,000 S-CNG vehicles sold in July, described as its highest monthly sales at that time. Both are company-reported figures, not independent market-wide statistics. The company says customers want automatic convenience without giving up fuel efficiency and traffic usability; that is Maruti’s view in the product announcement, not an independent conclusion.
How factory CNG systems affect daily use
Autocar India’s buying guidance notes that most models place the cylinder in the boot, many CNG calibrations prioritise running costs over outright performance, and most CNG cars are manual. These characteristics explain why a petrol-equivalent test drive can be misleading. Drive the CNG version from a stop, up a flyover and with the air-conditioner running. Pay attention to clutch effort, gear changes, overtaking confidence and the space lost to the tank.
Maruti describes its S-CNG system as using intelligent injection, stainless-steel pipes and joints, integrated wiring, a micro-switch that prevents starting during refuelling and an automatic mode that switches between CNG and petrol. Maruti also says its vehicles are evaluated with the CNG system installed and that warranty benefits can extend up to five years. These are manufacturer statements; confirm the warranty duration, exclusions and service conditions for the exact vehicle.
A factory-fitted system is generally preferable to an aftermarket retrofit for a new-car buyer because installation quality varies and a retrofit can affect warranty coverage, according to the cited buying guidance. If you are considering a used car or a retrofit anyway, obtain written confirmation of insurance, registration, emissions compliance and warranty consequences before paying.
Prices, efficiency and ownership-cost discipline
Do not choose a CNG car solely from an advertised mileage number. The only specific efficiency figure in the supplied material is Maruti’s certified 36.47 km/kg for the automatic Dzire. The sources do not establish a consistent official current efficiency table across all shortlisted cars, nor do they provide independent fuel-economy tests or a market-wide total-cost comparison.

Build your own estimate from your driving pattern: annual kilometres, local CNG price, petrol use during cold starts or when CNG is unavailable, insurance, service, tyres and financing. Keep the calculation model-specific and city-specific. A lower purchase price can be offset by more frequent long-distance petrol use if the CNG network on your routes is limited, while a larger MPV may save fewer rupees per kilometre if it carries heavy loads and uses more fuel.
Step-by-step checklist before booking
- Identify the exact variant. Ask for the full model, CNG trim, gearbox and model year in writing. Do not rely on a model-level web price.
- Check the city quotation. Separate ex-showroom price from registration, insurance, tax, handling and accessories. Confirm the on-road total in your state.
- Inspect the boot. Open the floor, measure the opening and place your regular luggage, spare wheel or tyre-repair equipment and charging or travel bags inside.
- Count your passengers. Sit in every row and test child-seat placement, shoulder room and third-row access if considering an MPV.
- Drive the CNG version. Test starts, inclines, stop-and-go traffic, overtaking and air-conditioning operation. A petrol test car is not an adequate substitute.
- Confirm transmission availability. Check whether the exact CNG trim is manual, AMT or automatic; do not infer it from the petrol range.
- Read warranty terms. Verify coverage for the CNG components, service intervals, roadside assistance and any conditions attached to an extended warranty.
- Check refuelling access. Map CNG stations on your daily and highway routes and ask about the filler location and expected boot access.
- Review safety and equipment. Compare the actual CNG trim’s airbags, electronic aids, camera or sensors and tyre equipment rather than the top petrol trim’s brochure.
- Get the final paperwork. Ensure the quotation, invoice and registration documents identify the factory-fitted CNG version and agreed equipment.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the model’s maximum price as the CNG price: ask for the CNG variant’s current ex-showroom figure.
- Assuming a large SUV has a large boot: the cylinder can consume substantial luggage volume; inspect it physically.
- Comparing petrol mileage with CNG mileage: use only a CNG-specific claimed or certified figure and label its source.
- Expecting petrol-car performance: CNG calibration may prioritise operating cost, especially with a full load; test the car on your route.
- Ignoring the gearbox: most CNG cars are manuals, although the 2026 Swift, Dzire and Baleno automatic S-CNG versions add AMT choices.
- Counting seats without counting bags: six or seven passengers can leave very little luggage room in an MPV.
- Fitting an unapproved retrofit: installation quality and warranty impact vary; factory-fitted systems are the safer starting point for a new purchase.
- Treating company sales figures as market proof: Maruti’s 58% increase and 83,000 July sales are company-reported, not independent industry statistics.
Which CNG car should you shortlist?
Start with the smallest body that genuinely meets your needs. Choose an Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio or Wagon R when compact dimensions and city use dominate. Move to a Tiago, Grand i10 Nios or C3 for a fuller hatchback experience. Select Dzire, Swift, Baleno or Altroz when family space and occasional highway trips matter. Choose Punch, Exter, Brezza, Fronx, Nexon, XUV 3XO or Taisor for a higher seating position, with the Nexon iCNG deserving a close boot inspection because Tata publishes a twin-cylinder, 321-litre configuration. Pick Ertiga, Rumion, XL6 or Eeco when passenger capacity is the deciding factor, and examine Hyryder, Grand Vitara or Victoris when you want a larger SUV cabin within the upper CNG budget bands.
The best purchase is the exact factory-fitted CNG variant that leaves enough boot space, carries your usual passengers, offers the gearbox you can live with and fits your city’s verified on-road budget. No source cited here supports naming a universal winner for real-world economy, reliability or safety, so make the final decision after a CNG-specific inspection and test drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are all CNG cars under ₹30 lakh automatic?
No. Most CNG variants are manual-only. Maruti Suzuki announced five-speed AMT S-CNG versions of the Swift, Dzire and Baleno in September 2026; confirm availability for the exact trim and city.
Is the Nexon iCNG boot really 321 litres?
Tata Motors states that its September 24, 2024 Nexon iCNG launch used twin cylinders to provide a 321-litre boot. It is a manufacturer-published launch specification, so verify the current variant before purchase.
Should I compare CNG cars by claimed mileage alone?
No. Claimed or certified figures are not real-world results, and the available sources do not provide a consistent independent efficiency table for every model. Use the exact CNG figure, then budget for your own traffic, load and route.
Can I install an aftermarket CNG kit on a petrol car?
A retrofit can vary in installation quality and may affect warranty, insurance or registration. For a new purchase, compare factory-fitted CNG cars first and obtain written confirmation of all legal and warranty implications before considering a retrofit.
