The best CNG car under ₹25 lakh in India depends on the job you need it to do. A hatchback such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS or Tata Tiago suits dense-city commuting; the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Tata Tigor are the relevant sedan choices; compact SUVs and crossovers include the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch, Tata Nexon, Toyota Taisor and Maruti Suzuki Brezza; and the Maruti Suzuki XL6 and Toyota Rumion address larger-family needs. The ₹25 lakh figure is a broad filter, not a reason to spend close to the limit. Compare the exact factory CNG variant, its ex-showroom and on-road price, seating and luggage layout, gearbox, equipment and independently tested mileage before choosing.
What the ₹25 lakh CNG-car budget actually covers
In India, a ₹25 lakh ceiling spans several very different kinds of new CNG vehicle. It can include small hatchbacks designed for low-cost urban travel, compact sedans with a separate boot, raised crossovers and SUVs with a higher driving position, and larger vehicles for families. A catalogue price range can combine petrol, CNG and other versions, so a model appearing below ₹25 lakh is not proof that every CNG trim sits at that price. Treat the ceiling as a search filter and confirm the live CNG variant with the manufacturer or a local dealer.

Prices also differ between ex-showroom and on-road figures. Registration, insurance, taxes, handling charges and optional equipment vary by state and city. Ask for a written quotation that names the fuel type, transmission and trim; otherwise a low advertised number may describe a petrol version rather than the CNG car you intend to buy.

| Need | Models to investigate | Why they belong on the shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Small city hatchback | Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS, Tata Tiago | Compact dimensions and hatchback practicality are useful in traffic and tight parking areas. Check the exact CNG trim, boot space and gearbox. |
| CNG sedan | Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor | A conventional boot and four-door layout suit buyers who carry luggage separately from passengers. Verify CNG-specific equipment and transmission. |
| Compact SUV or crossover | Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch, Tata Nexon, Toyota Taisor, Maruti Suzuki Brezza | These models address buyers who prefer a higher seating position or more versatile body shape. Catalogue ranges may mix fuel types and trims. |
| Larger family vehicle | Maruti Suzuki XL6, Toyota Rumion | Investigate seating capacity, the number of usable seats with the CNG cylinder installed, and remaining luggage room rather than relying on the model name alone. |
How to compare CNG cars without being misled
Use the CNG version as the unit of comparison. Petrol mileage, petrol-trim pricing and petrol-only equipment cannot be transferred to the bi-fuel model. Build a short list only after checking these six items:
#1 Best Overall

- Variant-level price: record the exact ex-showroom CNG price and obtain an on-road quotation for your registration city.
- Body and space: measure rear-seat comfort, boot or luggage access and the space occupied by the cylinder or associated hardware.
- Transmission: establish whether the CNG variant is manual, automated manual or automatic; availability can differ by trim and market.
- CNG performance and claimed efficiency: use the figure published for that fuel mode, while treating it as a test-cycle or certification result rather than a daily promise.
- Independent mileage evidence: look for a disclosed road test and keep its route, traffic and driving conditions attached to the number.
- Exact-variant equipment: confirm the safety and convenience features on the CNG trim you can actually buy, not on a higher petrol trim.
No single comparable dataset establishes an all-model CNG mileage ranking. Mixing a manufacturer’s certified number for one car with a publisher’s urban test for another creates a false league table.
Best CNG hatchbacks for city driving
Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Swift is a logical first check for a buyer who spends most of the week in urban traffic and wants a small hatchback. Its suitability depends on the CNG variant’s available gearbox, equipment and luggage arrangement in your market. Maruti Suzuki announced automatic S-CNG Swift variants in September 2026, so a buyer who cannot or does not want to operate a clutch should ask specifically for the automatic CNG trim and confirm local stock. Do not assume every Swift CNG grade has that transmission.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The Baleno is the larger-hatchback alternative in the same shortlist. Compare its rear-seat width, loading opening and CNG cylinder placement with the Swift if your passengers or luggage regularly fill the car. The September 2026 announcement also added automatic S-CNG Baleno variants. Verify whether the automatic version, trim and colour you want are available at your dealer rather than relying on the announcement alone.
Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS
Hyundai lists a bi-fuel petrol/CNG engine for the Grand i10 NIOS. It is worth considering when the car’s compact footprint and city-oriented layout match your routine. Confirm the CNG-specific boot capacity, equipment list, warranty terms and transmission in the current product page or dealer quotation.
Tata Tiago
The Tiago remains a relevant small-car CNG candidate. Tata’s earlier Tiago/Tigor AMT announcement demonstrates that automated-manual technology has been offered in this family, but the launch prices in that announcement are historical and are not current CNG prices. Ask the dealer to identify the present CNG trim and gearbox in writing before treating an AMT listing as available.

Best CNG sedans under ₹25 lakh
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
The Dzire combines a separate boot with a factory CNG system and is the most notable transmission development in the current shortlist. Maruti Suzuki’s September 2026 announcement says the automatic S-CNG Dzire has a certified fuel-efficiency figure of 36.47 km/kg under Rule 115 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The company described it as the most fuel-efficient sedan based on JATO Dynamics certification dated 18 September 2026. This is a manufacturer-reported, certification-based claim, not an independent road-test result; real consumption will vary with traffic, load, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use and driving style.
The same announcement introduced automatic S-CNG Dzire models. Confirm the exact automatic trim, safety equipment, boot usability and local availability, because a press-release announcement does not guarantee stock at every outlet.
Hyundai Aura
Hyundai’s product information identifies the Aura’s petrol/CNG bi-fuel engine. The sedan format can be useful when you carry a suitcase or shopping separately from the passenger compartment. Compare rear headroom, boot access and the equipment included in the CNG grade with the Dzire and Tigor. Record whether the quotation is for a manual CNG car or another powertrain.
Tata Tigor
The Tigor is another sedan to inspect, especially if a conventional boot is more important to you than a hatchback opening. Tata’s AMT announcement for the Tiago/Tigor family is evidence of a launch-time variant, not evidence of today’s price or of universal CNG-AMT availability. Require a current variant code and written price before making a decision.
Compact SUVs and crossovers: higher seating without leaving the budget
Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Grand Vitara and Victoris
These three models cover different sizes and equipment levels within Maruti Suzuki’s crossover and SUV range. A CNG buyer should first establish which engine, trim and transmission are offered with the fuel system. Then check whether the raised seating position genuinely helps your entry, visibility and road use, and whether the cylinder reduces the luggage space you need. A catalogue’s broad model price range may include non-CNG versions, so it cannot substitute for a CNG-variant quotation.

Hyundai Exter
The Exter offers a small-SUV shape for buyers who want a compact footprint and a higher seat. Confirm the current CNG grade’s equipment, ground-clearance specification, boot layout and gearbox. Do not use the petrol Exter’s efficiency or price as a proxy for the CNG model.

Tata Punch and Tata Nexon
The Punch is the smaller crossover option, while the Nexon addresses buyers seeking a larger footprint and more highway capability. Autocar India’s 2026 road tests illustrate why claimed and real-world mileage must be separated: its Brezza CNG test returned 22.95 km/kg against an ARAI-rated 25.5 km/kg in the same discussion, while its Nexon CNG test returned 18.55 km/kg compared with Tata’s claimed 24 km/kg. Those are publisher-tested results for the stated tests, not guarantees for every route or driver. Use them as context, not as a universal ranking.
Toyota Taisor and Maruti Suzuki Brezza
The Taisor and Brezza appear among current CNG catalogue choices. Compare their exact CNG trims, dimensions, seating comfort, cargo arrangement and gearbox rather than assuming similarly shaped vehicles have identical equipment. Autocar’s Brezza result is useful only when kept with its test conditions and the 25.5 km/kg ARAI figure; it should not be presented as the expected mileage for every owner.
Larger CNG family vehicles
Maruti Suzuki XL6
The XL6 deserves attention when you need a larger cabin and three-row flexibility. Ask how many seats remain practical with the CNG hardware installed and how much luggage space is left behind the occupied rows. A six-seat layout, captain’s chairs and a cylinder can produce a different day-to-day result from a five-seat hatchback even when both fit the same budget filter.
Toyota Rumion
The Rumion is another larger-family CNG possibility in the catalogue. Before comparing it with the XL6, inspect the precise CNG seating configuration, access to the third row, luggage room when all rows are in use and the equipment on the available trim. These practical checks matter more than a catalogue’s generic starting price.

Efficiency: how to read km/kg numbers
Fuel-efficiency figures come from different kinds of measurement. A certified or claimed number is produced under a defined test or certification process. A road-test number is an independent publisher’s result under that test’s route and conditions. Neither is a personal guarantee.
| Figure | What it describes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 36.47 km/kg | Maruti Suzuki’s certified figure for the automatic S-CNG Dzire under Rule 115; JATO Dynamics certification dated 18 September 2026 | Use it as the manufacturer’s certified claim for that variant, not as a real-world promise. |
| 22.95 km/kg | Autocar India’s 2026 real-world Brezza CNG test; the same discussion cites a 25.5 km/kg ARAI rating | Keep both numbers tied to the test and rating; do not generalize to all drivers. |
| 18.55 km/kg | Autocar India’s 2026 real-world Nexon CNG test; Tata’s cited claim was 24 km/kg | Compare only with the stated test context, not with an unrelated laboratory result. |
Driving pattern has a major effect on the result you see at the pump. Congested stop-start traffic, short trips, heavy loads, high speeds, frequent air-conditioning use and under-inflated tyres can all move consumption away from a certification figure. If running cost is central to your decision, keep a log over several fills after purchase rather than budgeting from the most optimistic number.
Why factory-fitted CNG matters
A factory-fitted system is engineered and tested as part of the vehicle program. Maruti Suzuki’s S-CNG technology description lists stainless-steel pipes and joints, integrated wiring, a microswitch that operates during refuelling and vehicle testing with the CNG system installed. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its own system; they do not establish a comparative safety ranking against every alternative.
Autocar’s buying guide recommends a factory-fitted CNG car instead of an aftermarket retrofit, pointing to possible warranty effects and variable fitment quality. That is an editorial recommendation, not a blanket legal or safety statement. If you are considering a retrofit, obtain written confirmation of warranty coverage, use an authorised installer, check applicable local requirements and have the vehicle inspected before registration or use.
Automatic CNG cars: what changed in 2026
Transmission choice is no longer limited to a manual assumption across the entire shortlist. Maruti Suzuki’s September 2026 announcement added automatic S-CNG Swift, Dzire and Baleno models. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said: “We at Maruti Suzuki are always listening to our customers. With modern Indian cities experiencing rapid growth, new-age customers are looking for the convenience of an automatic car without compromising on fuel-efficiency and performance in traffic conditions.”

The announcement confirms the introduction, but the useful buying question is narrower: which automatic CNG trim is on sale in your city, at what current price, with which equipment and delivery time? A dealer may have manual stock while an automatic version is order-only. Put the transmission and fuel type on the quotation and test-drive that exact configuration.
A step-by-step buying process
- Define the job. Write down your typical passenger count, weekly city kilometres, highway frequency, parking limits and the largest item you carry.
- Choose a body-style shortlist. Start with hatchbacks, sedans, compact SUVs or larger family vehicles instead of comparing every model at once.
- Verify the CNG variant. Use the manufacturer’s live variant information and ask a local dealer for the exact trim code, fuel type and transmission.
- Separate prices. Record ex-showroom price, on-road price, registration location, insurance, taxes and any mandatory charges in separate columns.
- Inspect space in person. Sit in every intended seat, open the boot with the cylinder installed and load the bags or equipment you actually use.
- Check equipment on that trim. Confirm the safety, infotainment, camera, tyre and convenience features included on the CNG version rather than on a higher petrol grade.
- Test the drivetrain. Drive in traffic, on an incline and on an open road if possible. Notice clutch effort, automated shifts, restart behaviour, air-conditioning performance and overtaking response.
- Ask ownership questions. Obtain the service schedule, warranty terms for the CNG components, roadside-assistance coverage and the procedure for periodic cylinder inspection or documentation where applicable.
- Get a delivery commitment. Have the dealer state the expected production or delivery date, colour, trim, fuel type and transmission on the order form.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a model’s starting price
A starting price often belongs to a petrol or lower trim. Reject any comparison that does not name the CNG variant and whether the figure is ex-showroom or on-road.
Ranking cars by one mileage number
Do not place a certified Dzire figure, a Brezza road-test result and a Nexon manufacturer claim in one supposedly equivalent ranking. Keep the measurement type, source and conditions attached to each number.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Assuming all variants share one gearbox
Automatic S-CNG availability is expanding, but it is variant- and market-specific. Confirm the transmission on the vehicle you can actually order.
Ignoring the cylinder’s effect on practicality
Check luggage height, usable floor area and access to the rearmost seats. A larger body does not automatically provide more useful cargo room after CNG hardware is installed.
Buying a retrofit without checking consequences
Ask about warranty, installation quality, certification and local requirements before considering an aftermarket system. A lower initial quote is not enough evidence that it is the better ownership choice.
Which CNG car should you choose?
- Choose a hatchback if most trips are urban, parking space is limited and you usually carry one to four people.
- Choose a sedan if a separate boot, rear-seat comfort and regular luggage are more important than a tall driving position.
- Choose a compact SUV or crossover if entry height, outward visibility and a more versatile body are priorities, while accepting that equipment and space vary sharply by trim.
- Choose a larger family vehicle if you routinely need the additional rows; verify real luggage capacity with those seats occupied.
- Choose an automatic CNG variant only after confirming that the exact trim is sold and stocked in your city and after driving it in the traffic conditions you face.
The strongest shortlist is therefore not a universal ranking. It is the smallest group of exact CNG variants that fits your passengers, luggage, transmission preference, route and verified budget. Recheck prices, stock and equipment immediately before booking because these details change by city and date.
