The practical field includes hatchbacks, sedans, compact SUVs and MPVs, but not every version of each nameplate is CNG-equipped or below the budget. Prices, equipment, waiting periods and transmissions change by city and date, so confirm the exact variant with a local dealer before paying a booking amount.
What “under ₹15 lakh” means
This guide uses an ex-showroom ceiling of ₹15 lakh. Ex-showroom is not the amount you will pay to register and use the car. Your on-road quote can add registration charges, road tax, insurance, handling or documentation charges where applicable, and accessories. These costs differ between cities and change over time.

The list is deliberately broad. A small hatchback may be the sensible choice for a solo commuter, while an MPV can make more sense for regular family travel. A vehicle that looks attractive on a model-wide price list may not meet the limit once you select its CNG trim and desired equipment.
Choose by how you will use the car
Daily urban commuting
Hatchbacks such as the Tiago, Swift, Baleno, Glanza or Wagon R are natural starting points when parking space, narrow streets and low operating cost matter more than maximum luggage capacity. Compare the driver’s seating position, turning effort, rear-seat width and the location of the CNG tank. Take your normal route on a test drive if possible; clutch weight and low-speed response matter more in traffic than a brochure specification.
Small family with mixed city and highway use
A compact sedan such as the Dzire or Aura gives a separate boot, while a crossover such as the Punch, Exter, Brezza, Nexon or Fronx provides a higher seating position. Do not assume that a taller body automatically has more usable luggage room after the cylinder is installed. Put your regular bags, stroller or work equipment in the boot during the dealer visit.
Frequent larger-family travel
The Ertiga, Rumion and Carens are aimed at buyers who regularly carry more people. Check the exact seating layout, access to the third row and luggage space with all seats occupied. A nominal six- or seven-seat capacity does not tell you whether adults can sit comfortably on a long journey or whether the remaining boot can hold your luggage.

Utility and occasional passenger duties
The Eeco may suit buyers who prioritise simple utility over passenger-car refinement. Confirm the passenger version, safety equipment, permitted seating and CNG specification rather than comparing it directly with a hatchback on equipment alone.
Verified price example and how to read price claims
Maruti Suzuki’s official Brezza price page states that its Delhi ex-showroom prices were effective from July 24, 2026. It lists the Brezza LXI CNG MT at ₹9,39,900 and the Brezza VXI CNG at ₹9,99,000. These are Delhi ex-showroom figures for the named trims and date; they are not on-road prices and should not be treated as a national quote.

Do not use a model’s lowest petrol price, an introductory announcement or an old review to decide whether its CNG version fits your budget. Ask the dealer to itemise registration, insurance and optional accessories so you can compare like-for-like on-road totals.

Autocar India’s mileage page dates its listed ex-showroom prices to June 16, 2026. Use the figures above to understand the difference between test types, not to rank every CNG car in the market. Traffic, tyre pressure, passenger load, air-conditioning use, gradients and CNG quality all influence consumption.
Transmission: do not assume every CNG car is manual
Most CNG variants have traditionally been manual-only, but that is no longer a safe assumption for every new listing. In September 2026, Maruti Suzuki announced automatic S-CNG versions of the Swift, Dzire and Baleno. The announcement included a manufacturer claim of 36.47 km/kg for the Dzire automatic S-CNG.

This is manufacturer positioning, not independent comparative testing. Confirm whether the automatic is offered on the trim you want, whether the dealer has stock, and whether the quoted price still fits your ceiling. If you prefer a manual, assess clutch effort and hill-start behaviour during a drive; if you need an automatic, verify the transmission type in writing because a petrol automatic listing does not prove that the CNG trim has one.
Boot space, cylinder packaging and passenger comfort
A CNG cylinder occupies space that would otherwise be available for luggage. The effect varies with vehicle design, so catalogue boot volume alone is not enough. Bring the items you normally carry: two medium suitcases, a child seat, office bags or shopping crates. Check whether the floor is level, whether the spare wheel or puncture kit is accessible and whether rear-seat folding remains practical.
- Load the boot with the rear seats upright, because that is how most family trips are made.
- Check the filler location and whether the fuel flap can be reached conveniently at your usual stations.
- Sit in every row if considering an MPV; cylinder placement should not make the third-row entry or luggage arrangement unusable.
- Ask where the CNG tank, shut-off components and service points are located, and follow the owner’s manual for inspection intervals.
Factory-fitted CNG versus a retrofit kit
This comparison is for factory-fitted CNG passenger cars. Autocar India recommends factory-fitted options over retrofit kits, citing warranty and installation-quality considerations. That is a source-attributed buying recommendation, not a universal statement about the legality or quality of every retrofit installation.
A factory system is developed and calibrated with the vehicle’s engine management, crash structure and service procedures. If you are considering a retrofit for a petrol car, obtain written information about warranty coverage, approved components, certification and after-sales support before comparing its price with a new factory CNG model.

A practical buying process
- Set the budget basis. Decide whether ₹15 lakh applies to ex-showroom or to your final on-road spend. If it is an on-road ceiling, leave room for city taxes, insurance and registration.
- Choose the body type. Select hatchback, sedan, crossover or MPV according to passenger count, parking and luggage needs rather than fuel type alone.
- Build a two- or three-car shortlist. Include at least one alternative body style so you can see what the CNG cylinder does to space and comfort.
- Verify the CNG trim. Ask for the exact variant name, transmission, seating capacity and current ex-showroom price. Do not rely on the cheapest petrol trim or a model-wide price range.
- Check local support. Confirm an authorised service outlet, CNG-trained technicians, parts availability and the dealer’s expected delivery date in your city.
- Test the loaded car. Drive in traffic, try reversing and parking, and inspect the boot with your real luggage. Test a third-row MPV with all rows occupied if that is your normal use.
- Request the complete quote. Get ex-showroom, registration, insurance, taxes, accessories and any finance charges listed separately. Record the quote date.
- Read the warranty and maintenance terms. Ask what inspections apply to the CNG system, what is covered, and which service intervals are mandatory.
- Confirm delivery configuration. Before registration, match the VIN, variant, fuel type, transmission and included equipment against the booking form and invoice.
Estimate running cost without pretending to know your fuel bill
No broad, responsibly named market statistic establishes a universal CNG saving for every Indian driver. Calculate your own estimate instead:
annual fuel cost = annual kilometres ÷ real-world km/kg × local CNG price per kg
For a petrol comparison, use the same distance, your observed petrol efficiency and the local petrol price on the same date. Add insurance, scheduled maintenance, tyres, financing and any expected cylinder inspection costs separately. Record the city, fuel prices, mileage assumptions and date so the result can be updated when prices or your commute change. A high-mileage commuter may recover a CNG price premium sooner than a low-mileage owner, but the answer depends on your actual distance and local fuel access.

Checks that prevent common mistakes
- Budget mistake: treating an ex-showroom price as an on-road total. Fix it by obtaining a city-specific quote.
- Variant mistake: assuming every trim of a nameplate is CNG-equipped. Fix it by recording the exact CNG variant code or full name.
- Transmission mistake: assuming a petrol automatic is also available with CNG. Fix it by checking the CNG brochure, order form and dealer stock.
- Mileage mistake: comparing an ARAI figure with a road-test result as if they were equivalent. Keep the test basis beside every number.
- Space mistake: buying without checking the boot after cylinder installation. Fix it with a physical luggage test.

Which CNG car is best for you?
There is no single winner for every buyer under ₹15 lakh. The best choice is the exact CNG variant that fits your use, space requirements, transmission preference and local on-road budget. Start with a hatchback for compact commuting, a sedan when a separate boot is valuable, a crossover when seating height and urban versatility matter, or an MPV when carrying several passengers is routine.
Use the 2026 candidate list to arrange test drives, but treat every price, feature, transmission and delivery claim as provisional until confirmed for your city. The Brezza figures above show how a precise, dated price claim should be written; the Swift and Dzire figures show why mileage claims must retain their source and test basis. That discipline will produce a more realistic purchase decision than choosing a car from an unqualified mileage or model-wide price headline.
