Premiums vary with your driving record, vehicle, location, annual kilometres, coverage choices and insurer. Build at least three like-for-like quotes, then evaluate limits, deductibles, optional benefits, claims practices, service and renewal terms before choosing.
Ontario’s rules also changed on July 1, 2026. Medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care accident benefits remain mandatory for policies entered into on or after that date, while several other accident benefits are optional. Check your own policy and ask the insurer, agent or broker exactly what you selected.

What “best car insurance in Ontario” should mean
Insurance shopping is a comparison exercise, not a province-wide ranking. Two drivers can receive very different prices for the same vehicle, and a lower premium may reflect lower liability limits, a larger deductible, fewer accident benefits or less physical-damage protection. A quote is meaningful only when the assumptions and policy terms match.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with three or more current quotes from different types of sellers. The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) tells consumers: “Get at least three quotes from different direct writers, brokers and agents.” Its purchasing auto insurance guidance also recommends choosing a representative who answers your questions and can be reached when you need help with a question or claim.
Use the same driver, vehicle, kilometres, use, liability limit, accident-benefit selections, endorsements and deductibles for every quote. Then compare what each policy actually pays for, how claims are handled and how renewal changes are communicated—not just the first-year premium.
Ontario’s mandatory auto insurance coverage
Every Ontario automobile policy has a required foundation. The exact wording, conditions and exclusions are in your policy documents, so use this table as a shopping map rather than a substitute for the contract.
| Coverage | What it generally does | Ontario requirement or choice |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party liability | Responds to legitimate claims when you are responsible for injuring another person or damaging their property, up to your policy limit. | At least $200,000 is required. You can buy a higher limit. |
| Statutory accident benefits | Can provide benefits to people injured in an auto accident regardless of fault, subject to the statutory schedule and your policy selections. | Some benefits are mandatory; others became optional for policies entered into on or after July 1, 2026. |
| Uninsured automobile | May protect against injury or death caused by an uninsured or unidentified vehicle and may cover damage caused by an identified uninsured motorist. | Included in a standard policy, subject to its terms. |
| Direct compensation-property damage (DCPD) | May pay for vehicle damage, contents or loss of use after a qualifying Ontario accident involving another insured vehicle and an at-fault party. | Included subject to conditions. You may elect not to claim it, but that choice may not suit every driver. |
FSRA explains the standard package in What is in a standard auto insurance policy?. Read the policy wording before assuming a loss qualifies. DCPD, for example, depends on the accident meeting Ontario’s conditions; opting out changes how damage is handled after a qualifying collision.

Accident benefits after the July 1, 2026 reform
If your policy was entered into on or after July 1, 2026, medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care benefits remain mandatory. Other accident benefits are optional, including income replacement, non-earner, dependant-care and indexation benefits, as well as increased medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care limits.
This matters most when someone is injured and asks, “I was injured in the accident!” Accident benefits can apply without proving who caused the crash, but the amount and type of help depend on the selections in the policy and the applicable statutory rules. Ask your insurer, agent or broker to identify each selected option in writing.
FSRA’s July 1, 2026 reform notice describes the change. Its consumer summary also says the regulation and policy control if there is a difference.
Accident-benefit limits to examine
FSRA’s customization information gives standard examples of $65,000 for medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care benefits for non-catastrophic impairments and $1,000,000 for catastrophic impairments. Options can increase non-catastrophic limits to $130,000 or $1,000,000 and catastrophic limits to $2,000,000. These are coverage options, not automatic payouts; eligibility and payment remain subject to the policy and statutory schedule. See FSRA’s accident-benefit customization guidance.
Optional protection for your vehicle
Physical-damage coverage is where two apparently similar quotes often diverge. Ask for the deductible, covered events, exclusions and claim settlement basis for each option.

| Coverage | Typical protection | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Specified perils | Damage from listed events in the policy, such as named fire, theft or weather perils. | Which perils are listed, and what exclusions or deductibles apply? |
| Comprehensive | Specified perils plus other non-collision losses, which can include falling objects and vandalism. | Are glass, theft, weather and vandalism covered, and at what deductible? |
| Collision or upset | Collision with an object or overturning, whether or not another vehicle is involved. | Does it cover single-vehicle collisions, and what deductible applies? |
| All perils | Combines collision and comprehensive and adds certain theft situations. | Which theft situations and exclusions distinguish it from comprehensive plus collision? |
These descriptions come from FSRA’s optional and extra coverage guidance. Endorsements, called Ontario Policy Change Forms (OPCFs), can add, change or reduce protection for particular circumstances. Never infer an endorsement’s effect from its name alone; read the form attached to your policy.
What Ontario car insurance costs in 2026

|---|---|
| Ontario overall | $2,218 |
| Greater Toronto Area | $2,868 |
| Other urban areas | $2,131 |

Why insurers charge different premiums
FSRA lists the following rating factors in What determines your auto insurance rate:
Rank #4
- Age and years licensed.
- Driving record, claims and convictions.
- Vehicle make, model and other vehicle characteristics.
- Where the vehicle is kept and driven.
- Annual kilometres and whether the vehicle is used to commute.
- Selected liability limits, accident benefits, physical-damage coverage and endorsements.
- Deductible amount.
- The insurer’s own rating groups and pricing model.
Urban premiums can be higher where collisions and theft are more frequent. Generally, a lower deductible raises the premium, while buying more protection can also raise it. Because every insurer weights these factors differently, no guide can identify one universally cheapest insurer for Ontario.
Rate approvals do not guarantee your renewal price
Insurers must obtain approval to change the rates they use to calculate premiums. FSRA’s Auto Insurance Rate Approvals database contains approvals dating back to January 1, 2018 and is updated regularly. An approved change does not necessarily affect every customer, so your renewal document—not a province-wide headline—is the relevant number.
How to shop for the best policy: a repeatable process
- Gather consistent information. Have your driver’s licence details, vehicle identification, purchase or lease information, current odometer reading, parking address, annual kilometres, commuting distance, business use, claims, convictions and desired coverage available before requesting quotes.
- Request at least three quotes. Use different direct writers, brokers and agents. Tell each representative that you want the same limits, benefits, endorsements and deductibles so the results are comparable.
- Set a liability limit before comparing price. The $200,000 legal minimum is not the same protection as a higher limit. Ask what higher limits cost and what the policy pays when a claim exceeds your limit.
- Choose accident benefits deliberately. For policies entered into on or after July 1, 2026, confirm which optional income-replacement, non-earner, dependant-care, indexation and increased-limit options are included or declined.
- Match physical-damage coverage. Specify specified perils, comprehensive, collision or upset, or all perils; then record each deductible. A quote with no collision coverage cannot be fairly compared with one that includes it.
- Ask about endorsements and exclusions. Request the OPCF number and a plain-language explanation for any endorsement affecting rental vehicles, replacement cost, transportation, family members or vehicle use.
- Investigate claims handling. Ask how to report a claim after hours, whether an adjuster or repair network handles the file, how rental transportation works and what documentation is needed.
- Check renewal and cancellation rules. Ask what happens after an at-fault claim, when a policy might not renew and how notice of a premium or coverage change is delivered.
- Compare service as well as premium. A representative who cannot explain a deductible or is difficult to reach can create costly delays after a loss. Accessibility is part of value.
- Recheck at every renewal. Rates, vehicle circumstances and available discounts change. Last year’s best quote may not be this year’s best value.

| Quote item | Record for every insurer | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Liability | Limit and any family or household-driver conditions | A lower limit can make a cheap quote materially less protective. |
| Accident benefits | Mandatory benefits, optional benefits selected or declined, and increased limits | Policies issued after July 1, 2026 can differ significantly in optional benefits. |
| Vehicle damage | Specified perils, comprehensive, collision/upset or all perils | Coverage responds to different causes of loss. |
| Deductibles | Separate deductible for each coverage | A lower premium may simply transfer more cost to you after a claim. |
| Endorsements | OPCF number, purpose and exclusions | An endorsement can add, restrict or remove protection. |
| Price | Final recurring premium, taxes and payment fees | Introductory or payment-specific figures may not represent the ongoing cost. |
| Claims and service | Reporting channels, hours, repair and rental process | Service quality matters when you need the policy. |
Choosing coverage for the vehicle you own
Older, lower-value vehicles
Compare the annual cost of collision or comprehensive with the vehicle’s value, your deductible and your ability to pay for repairs or replacement. FSRA gives a conditional example: collision or comprehensive may not be cost-effective for a vehicle worth less than $2,000 when a claim would not substantially exceed the deductible. That is not a blanket instruction to drop coverage. A vehicle can still be essential to work or caregiving, and theft, weather or liability exposure may justify protection.

Financed or leased vehicles
Review the finance or lease agreement before removing or reducing physical-damage coverage. The lender or lessor may require particular coverages, limits or deductibles, and the contract may impose obligations that are separate from Ontario’s minimum insurance law.
High-use or commuting vehicles
Report the actual use and annual kilometres. Understating commuting, business use or distance can produce an inaccurate quote and problems when a claim is investigated. If your driving pattern changes, tell the insurer before renewal rather than relying on an old estimate.
Discounts and sensible ways to lower the premium
- Ask every quote provider which discounts you qualify for and what evidence is required.
- Compare the effect of a higher deductible with the cash you could comfortably pay after a loss.
- Review whether your annual kilometres, parking location or vehicle use has changed.
- Price several coverage combinations, but keep the liability limit and accident benefits at levels you can defend financially.
- Shop again at renewal instead of assuming loyalty produces the lowest price.
Do not reduce coverage solely to win a lower headline price. The saving is only worthwhile if the remaining protection fits your assets, income, vehicle value and ability to absorb a deductible or uncovered loss.
Questions to ask before binding a policy
- What is the final premium, including taxes and any instalment charges?
- Which liability limit, accident benefits and optional physical-damage coverages are shown on the quote?
- What deductible applies to each coverage?
- Which losses are excluded, and which OPCFs are attached?
- Does DCPD apply to my circumstances, and what changes if I elect not to claim it?
- How do I report a claim at night or on a weekend?
- What happens to my premium and renewal eligibility after an at-fault claim?
- How will the insurer notify me about a rate, coverage or renewal change?
A practical decision rule
Choose the policy that remains competitive after you normalize every quote to the same assumptions and that gives clear answers about claims, exclusions and renewal. A slightly higher premium can be the better value if it buys a higher liability limit, accident benefits you would otherwise need to fund yourself, a manageable deductible or dependable claims access. Conversely, paying for broad physical-damage coverage on a low-value vehicle may not make financial sense when the deductible consumes most of a potential payout.
Document the final quote, declarations page, endorsements and payment schedule. Keep the representative’s contact information with your vehicle documents, and revisit the policy whenever you move, change vehicles, alter your commute, add a driver or experience a claim.
