The best car gadgets are targeted upgrades: a wireless adapter for a car that already has wired smartphone projection, a portable display for an older vehicle, a dash cam for evidence and security, or a charging mount that keeps your phone usable without handling it.
This is a 2024-focused guide for U.S. drivers. Prices, availability, firmware, apps, and phone compatibility may have changed since then, so verify the manufacturer’s current specifications before buying.

Check your car before buying anything
Compatibility matters more than the gadget’s headline specification. Start with your vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, factory stereo, and USB-port type. Then answer four questions:
#1 Best Overall
- 360° Rotation & Dual-Axis Adjustment: This car phone holder features a 360° rotating base and 210° dual-axis folding metal arms, allowing easy angle adjustments to suit your needs. Whether in the car or at the office, switch between portrait and landscape modes effortlessly. Its unique folding design reduces the mount's size by 50% when not in use, keeping your space tidy. Built for daily use and tested over 3000 times, it stays stable and dependable over time. (Protected by US Design Patent No. US D1,076,905 S)
- Strong Suction & Stable Hold: This car phone mount uses advanced rotating-lock vacuum suction, boosting suction by 45% compared to traditional press-on mounts. It stays stable on bumpy roads or during sudden stops. The 4-layer high-strength nano gel suction cup supports up to 78lbs and holds firm in extreme temperatures (-40°F to 300°F). Backed by 9999+ durability tests and 200+ reattachments, it provides lasting suction and stability for everyday use.
- Stronger Magnetic Force: With 22 high-performance N55 magnets, this mount's magnetic strength is 200% stronger than standard magnets, providing a top-tier hold with up to 2400gf of force. It can support the weight of up to 50 phones. After 5000 vibration tests and extreme road simulations, your phone stays secure during bumps, sudden stops, or sharp turns. This precise magnetic setup keeps your phone secure through every drive while maintaining clear signals for everyday use.
- Circular Cooling Design: This magnetic phone holder for cars features a unique circular vent design that reduces contact between your phone and the holder, improving airflow and preventing overheating. Whether you're using GPS on a long drive or video calling during your commute, it keeps your phone cool, extending battery life and ensuring smooth performance. It helps reduce heat buildup so your phone can stay efficient and responsive throughout the drive.
- Broad Compatibility & 1s Easy Installation: This cell phone car mount is designed for iPhone 18/17/16/15/14/13/12 series and for all MagSafe devices, plus it includes a magnetic ring to provide the same strong magnetic hold for non-MagSafe phones. Whether your phone is bare or in a case, it attaches in just one second with one hand. Its exceptional compatibility works with various car models, ensuring a secure and easy fit in any vehicle. Designed for broad compatibility, it makes mounting quick, secure, and effortless in almost any driving scenario.
- Does the car support wired Apple CarPlay or wired Android Auto?
- Does the phone support the platform and operating-system version required by the accessory?
- Is the USB port data-capable, or does it provide charging only?
- Does the accessory work with your factory or aftermarket head unit?
A USB port does not automatically mean the car supports smartphone projection. Bluetooth audio alone is not enough for a wireless CarPlay adapter. Similarly, a USB-A-to-USB-C converter may provide power but fail to carry data.
Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto adapters
Best for: cars that already run CarPlay or Android Auto through a cable.
A wireless adapter converts an existing wired connection into a wireless one. It generally does not add CarPlay or Android Auto to a car that lacks those systems. The Ottocast Mini Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto Adapter, for example, states that compatible vehicles need factory wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto and lists additional phone and head-unit limitations.
What to look for
- Separate support for iPhone and Android, rather than a vague “universal” claim
- USB-A and USB-C connector options
- Reliable startup and reconnection
- Support for switching between multiple phones
- A practical firmware-update method
- Compatibility with aftermarket stereos
- A warranty and return policy that cover connection problems
The advantages are simple installation, a cleaner cabin, and continued use of the factory screen and controls. The trade-offs are another wireless connection, possible startup delays, pairing conflicts, and no improvement to the car’s display, speakers, or factory software. Some factory-wireless systems require a different type of accessory.

Treat such figures as historical or promotional, not as a current quote.
If the adapter will not connect
- Confirm that wired CarPlay or Android Auto works directly with a known-good cable.
- Plug into the car’s data USB port, not a charging-only port.
- Delete old Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairings if the adapter conflicts with another device.
- Test with one phone paired and, if necessary, with the phone case removed.
- Try another compatible cable or USB port.
- Install firmware updates supplied by the manufacturer.
- Recheck special compatibility warnings for aftermarket Sony units, BMW systems, Mitsubishi vehicles, and unusual factory setups.
Portable CarPlay and Android Auto displays
Best for: older cars without compatible factory infotainment.
A portable screen can add smartphone projection without replacing the stereo. It is especially useful when a replacement head unit is impractical or the owner wants a reversible upgrade. Products in the Ottocast portable-display ecosystem were promoted as solutions for cars without factory CarPlay, with 2024-era price signals around $169–$179 on some variants.

Check the screen’s brightness, touch response, automatic startup, mounting method, backup-camera support, and audio outputs. Audio may travel through a built-in speaker, Bluetooth, an AUX cable, or an FM transmitter. AUX is usually cleaner than FM, while a built-in speaker may be too weak for regular driving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPortable displays are not equivalent to integrated head units. They can create dashboard clutter, glare, visible cables, awkward volume control, and theft risk. A replacement head unit is usually better when the vehicle supports a clean installation and you want steering-wheel controls, factory-like appearance, better audio integration, or seamless backup-camera support.
Never mount a screen where it obstructs your view or interferes with an airbag. Route cables away from pedals, steering components, and airbag deployment paths.
Dash cams: the most useful safety upgrade
Best for: crash evidence, parking incidents, and security monitoring.
Choose among front-only, front-and-rear, and three-channel systems that also record the cabin. Cloud-connected models add remote access but may require a subscription. 2024 coverage highlighted models such as the Nextbase 622GW and 522GW, while comparison coverage from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide distinguishes cameras by night quality, parking functions, storage, GPS, and connectivity.

- Night performance: sensor quality, exposure, lens quality, and dynamic range matter as much as resolution.
- Coverage: front-and-rear is more useful for many drivers than an expensive front-only camera.
- Storage: confirm the supported microSD capacity and use a card rated for continuous recording.
- Parking mode: a switched 12-volt outlet may turn off when the car is parked; continuous parking recording may require an OBD cable or hardwire kit.
- Power protection: use a proper low-voltage cutoff to reduce the risk of draining the vehicle battery.
- GPS and Wi-Fi: GPS can attach location and speed data; Wi-Fi can simplify clip transfer.
- Heat resistance: dashboards expose cameras and batteries to intense heat and sunlight.
Do not assume 4K guarantees clearer plates. Bitrate, lens design, exposure, vibration, and night processing can matter more. Memory cards wear out, so monitor recording errors and replace cards according to the camera maker’s guidance.
Interior cameras can record passengers without them realizing it. Audio recording and windshield-mounted devices are regulated differently across U.S. states, so check applicable law before installation. A dash cam is not a guaranteed insurance discount or legal shield, and it does not prevent theft.

Phone mounts, wireless charging, and USB-C power
Best for: safer navigation, hands-free calls, and dependable charging.
Choose a vent, dash, windshield, CD-slot, or cup-holder mount according to the car’s layout. Magnetic mounts are convenient, particularly for MagSafe-compatible iPhones and cases, but a thick case or incompatible phone may not hold securely. Clamp mounts fit more devices but can be slower to use one-handed.
Wireless charging is affected by alignment, case thickness, heat, and phone compatibility. A phone mounted in direct sun may reduce or stop charging to control its temperature. A vent mount can help in hot weather, but it may block airflow or become unsuitable when the heater is running.
For a USB-C charger, compare USB Power Delivery support, wattage per port, total shared output, USB-A availability, and cable length. Do not call a charger “fast” without specifying the supported standard and device. Multiport chargers may divide their output when several devices are connected. WIRED’s 2024 guide separates charging output and device support rather than treating all wireless charging as equivalent.
External tire-pressure monitoring systems
Best for: older cars, trailers, RVs, spare tires, and drivers who want numerical pressure and temperature readings.
External TPMS systems attach sensors to valve stems and send readings to a display or phone app. Compare the number of supported wheels, pressure range, temperature alerts, weather resistance, anti-theft locks, sensor batteries, and replacement cost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →External sensors are convenient but exposed to water, road salt, curbs, and theft. A sensor or battery problem can resemble a tire problem, and readings may require calibration. Temperature changes also affect pressure. Use the vehicle or tire maker’s cold-pressure specification and verify questionable alerts with a reliable gauge. TPMS supplements—not replaces—manual tire checks.

OBD-II scanners and vehicle monitors
Best for: reading diagnostic trouble codes and viewing selected live data before visiting a repair shop.
Basic handheld readers are inexpensive. Bluetooth readers add an app, while products such as FIXD, BlueDriver, OBDLink, Innova, and Autel occupy different levels of capability and software support. Separate simple code reading from advanced bidirectional or professional tools.
A consumer scanner cannot access every manufacturer module or diagnose every fault. If the check-engine light appears, record the code and freeze-frame information before clearing it. Clearing the light does not repair the underlying problem and may erase useful evidence for a technician.
The OBD-II port is not a universal power outlet. A device left connected can contribute to battery drain in some vehicles if the car or accessory does not enter a proper sleep state. Remove it or verify its sleep behavior if the vehicle sits unused.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.GPS trackers and vehicle-security devices
Best for: location history, geofencing, movement alerts, and theft-recovery assistance.
A cellular GPS tracker communicates through its own network connection and generally requires a recurring subscription. A Bluetooth tag such as an AirTag relies on nearby compatible devices and is not an equivalent standalone vehicle tracker.
Compare coverage, subscription cost, battery life, geofencing, movement alerts, mounting security, and recovery limitations. Tracking can assist recovery but cannot prevent theft. Use trackers lawfully and consider the consent and privacy of passengers, employees, family members, or anyone else who may be monitored.

Head-up displays: useful, but niche
Best for: drivers who want speed, navigation, or selected vehicle data closer to their forward view.
Phone-based HUDs depend on an app and phone GPS. OBD-based models may show vehicle data but may not work with every car or expose every parameter. Windshield reflections, brightness at night, and distraction can outweigh the benefit. MotorTrend’s overview of aftermarket HUDs describes the category’s navigation and vehicle-data use cases.
Keep HUD information secondary to the road and the vehicle’s legally required instruments. It is a convenience upgrade, not a substitute for a properly functioning dashboard.

This range can cover better charging mounts, basic dash cams, external TPMS systems, and portable displays during promotions. Include the cost of a memory card, sensor batteries, cables, or installation accessories.
$150–$300
Expect stronger dual-channel dash cams, higher-quality portable displays, and more capable connected accessories. Compare the complete installed cost rather than the device alone.
$300 and above
Premium dash cams, cellular security systems, professional head-unit installations, and advanced diagnostic equipment belong here. The extra cost is worthwhile only if you need their added coverage, integration, or support.
How to choose without wasting money
- Identify one recurring problem. Cable clutter, missing crash evidence, tire-pressure uncertainty, or an obsolete stereo is a better starting point than a “smart” shopping list.
- Verify compatibility. Check the exact vehicle trim, phone, head unit, USB port, app, and required operating system.
- Calculate the real cost. Add memory cards, hardwire kits, AUX cables, subscriptions, batteries, adapters, and professional installation.
- Assess safety. Reject anything that blocks visibility, crosses an airbag path, encourages phone handling, or creates distracting lights.
- Prefer reversible upgrades first. A wireless adapter or charging mount is easier to remove than a head-unit replacement.
- Buy from a source with a meaningful return policy. Electronics that fail only in a particular vehicle are difficult to troubleshoot without one.
Installation and safety checklist
- Test plug-in devices at home before permanently routing cables.
- Keep mounts out of the driver’s sightline and away from airbags.
- Secure cables so they cannot reach pedals, steering parts, or deployment paths.
- Use a low-voltage cutoff for hardwired dash cams.
- Have a professional handle trim removal, head-unit replacement, backup-camera integration, or wiring near airbags.
- Check state rules for windshield-mounted accessories and recorded audio.
- Remove visible devices when parking in a high-theft area if practical.
- Recheck firmware, app support, warranties, and accessories because 2024 products may have been replaced or discontinued.
For additional category context, see Autoblog’s wireless-adapter guide and Car and Driver’s tested-and-trusted gear coverage. Where a publication describes hands-on testing, treat that as different from a specification-based recommendation.
