iOS 26 makes CarPlay more glanceable and less dependent on opening full apps. The update adds configurable widgets, quick Message Tapback reactions, pinned conversations, Live Activities on the Dashboard, more compact incoming-call alerts, and a refreshed visual design.
These features require an iPhone running iOS 26 and a vehicle or aftermarket receiver that supports CarPlay. The exact experience still depends on the vehicle’s display, input method, region, and whether individual app developers provide CarPlay-compatible widgets.
What iOS 26 changes in CarPlay
Apple announced the CarPlay additions with iOS 26 on June 9, 2025. They are designed to keep useful information visible without requiring drivers to open a full app or leave an active navigation view.
- Widgets: glanceable information from supported iPhone apps can appear in CarPlay widget stacks.
- Tapbacks: drivers can react to Messages with quick responses such as a heart or thumbs-up.
- Pinned conversations: conversations pinned in Messages on the iPhone are easier to reach in CarPlay.
- Live Activities: supported real-time updates can appear on the CarPlay Dashboard.
- Compact calls: incoming-call presentation takes up less of the navigation view.
- Updated appearance: CarPlay adopts Apple’s newer iOS 26 visual design.

How CarPlay widgets work
CarPlay widgets are not simply a copy of the iPhone Home Screen. They are presented in a CarPlay-oriented layout, with Apple’s developer guidance identifying the systemSmall widget family for the CarPlay presentation. Depending on the app, a widget might show weather conditions, calendar information, reminders, home status, media or podcast progress, navigation-related details, or another app-specific update.
However, an existing iPhone widget does not automatically become a CarPlay widget. The developer must support the appropriate CarPlay widget experience. Apple’s developer sessions explain that an app can provide a CarPlay widget even without offering a separate full CarPlay app, but support remains optional and app-dependent. Widgets appear in stacks associated with the CarPlay Dashboard. The number of stacks and the amount of information that fits depends on the vehicle’s screen. A large widescreen display may provide more room than a small portrait-oriented or aftermarket display.
Are CarPlay widgets interactive?
Some can do more than display information. Apple says widgets can launch their associated apps, and touchscreen vehicles may support limited interaction. That does not make them equivalent to using the complete iPhone app. Rotary controllers, buttons, and other non-touch inputs can provide a different experience from a touchscreen.

How to add widgets to CarPlay
Configure widgets while parked:
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Select the relevant vehicle.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.

The vehicle selection matters. Widget layouts are configured for the selected CarPlay vehicle, so adding a widget in one car does not necessarily reproduce the same layout in another car.
Rearrange or remove widgets
Return to Settings > General > CarPlay > [your vehicle] > Widgets. Use the reorder control to drag widgets into a different position, or use the remove control to delete one.
The same area includes Smart Rotate, which can change the displayed widget based on context, and Widget Suggestions, which can surface widgets Apple believes may be relevant. If you prefer a predictable dashboard, you can leave these options off and keep a smaller fixed selection.
How Message Tapbacks work in CarPlay
Tapbacks are quick reactions to a received message, not full typed replies. They are useful for brief acknowledgments when a heart, thumbs-up, or another available reaction communicates enough.

From the CarPlay interface, open Messages, select the conversation and message, choose Tapback, and select the desired emoji reaction. The exact on-screen controls can vary with the CarPlay display and input hardware.
You can also ask Siri to apply a reaction. Apple gives “I like that message” as an example for applying a like. Voice commands can vary by language, region, Siri settings, and future software updates, so an English phrase should not be treated as universal.
Tapbacks reduce the need to compose a short acknowledgment, but they are not a reason to browse messages or operate the display freely while the vehicle is moving. Use Siri where practical, and wait until it is safe to interact manually.
The other CarPlay improvements in iOS 26
Pinned conversations
Conversations pinned in Messages on the iPhone now appear in the CarPlay Messages experience. That makes frequent contacts easier to find without searching through the complete message list.
Live Activities on the Dashboard
Supported Live Activities can appear on the CarPlay Dashboard or as notifications. This can keep time-sensitive information visible without opening a full app. Depending on the app, that information could relate to travel, delivery, an event, or another active status.

Incoming calls use a more compact presentation, helping preserve visibility of the active navigation view instead of covering as much of it with a call interface.

A refreshed interface
CarPlay also adopts the broader iOS 26 design language. The visual refresh is less significant than the workflow changes, but it makes the Dashboard and related controls feel more consistent with the iPhone software.

Usually, no. The baseline requirement is an iPhone that can run iOS 26 connected to a vehicle or aftermarket receiver that already supports CarPlay. You do not need a separate subscription for widgets or Tapbacks.
Apple says CarPlay availability depends on the vehicle and country or region. Features can also vary by iPhone model, language, carrier, and region. Check Apple’s current iOS 26 documentation and CarPlay support guidance for the latest requirements rather than assuming every CarPlay-compatible iPhone receives an identical experience.
The vehicle’s hardware affects the result. Screen size and aspect ratio determine how many widget stacks fit, while touchscreen, rotary-controller, and button-based systems can offer different ways to select or launch content. Wireless versus wired CarPlay affects convenience, but it does not turn an unsupported vehicle into a supported one.

Standard CarPlay versus CarPlay Ultra
The iOS 26 CarPlay improvements also extend to CarPlay Ultra, but the two systems should not be confused. Standard CarPlay primarily presents iPhone-powered apps and information on the vehicle’s infotainment display. CarPlay Ultra is a deeper vehicle integration that can span multiple displays and expose controls such as climate and radio functions.
Updating an iPhone to iOS 26 does not upgrade a vehicle to CarPlay Ultra. Ultra requires compatible vehicle hardware and participation from the vehicle manufacturer. Apple discusses the distinction in its iOS 26 announcement and developer documentation.
What to check if a widget does not appear
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later.
- Confirm the car or receiver supports CarPlay.
- Connect the iPhone to the correct vehicle profile.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Widgets.
- Check whether the app actually offers a CarPlay-compatible widget.
- Update the app in case support was added in a newer release.
- Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay.
- If the layout still does not refresh, restart the iPhone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Check whether the widget is unavailable in your region or incompatible with the vehicle’s display.
Reinstalling an app is not a guaranteed fix. The simplest explanation may be that the developer has not supplied CarPlay widget support. Apple’s general guidance says only apps supported by CarPlay appear on the CarPlay display and recommends contacting the app developer for third-party app problems.
Safety and privacy considerations
Configure the Dashboard while parked and keep the widget selection restrained. More information can be useful, but more information can also create visual clutter. A widget being available in CarPlay does not mean it should be studied while driving.

A passenger could see calendar details, travel status, delivery information, or contacts. Review the layout if other people regularly use the car.
Message content spoken aloud is controlled separately through Siri and Announce Messages settings. Apple’s CarPlay support page explains controls for choosing how messages are announced and which messages Siri reads. Tapbacks are generally the lower-effort option when a reaction is all that is needed, but voice control remains preferable to manually navigating messages in motion.
Verdict
iOS 26 is a practical CarPlay improvement rather than a complete reinvention. Tapbacks make simple message acknowledgments faster, while widgets give the Dashboard more useful information without forcing a full app open. Pinned conversations, Live Activities, compact calls, and the visual redesign complete the update.
The important caveat is that the experience is not identical in every car. You need iOS 26, a CarPlay-compatible vehicle or receiver, a suitable display, and apps whose developers support CarPlay widgets. For drivers who keep the Dashboard uncluttered and use voice controls whenever possible, the update should make everyday CarPlay interactions more efficient.
