There is no sound basis for naming six universally best brake brands and four universally worst ones. Brake performance depends on the specific pad-and-rotor system and the vehicle it is fitted to. In ADAC’s 2021 comparison of six complete systems for a VW Golf 7, ATE Ceramic performed strongly, Bosch was acceptable for less demanding driving, and Ridex was the weakest overall result. Those findings apply to the tested products—not every product sold under those brand names.
What the VW Golf 7 comparison can—and cannot—tell you
ADAC compared six complete pad-and-rotor systems in a VW Golf 7: VW original replacement parts, ATE Ceramic, Brembo Xtra, Zimmermann drilled discs, Bosch, and Ridex. The test was conducted in 2021; ADAC published its article in 2024 and says the results have not been updated. The set prices reported at the time ranged from €100 to €432, so they are historical test prices, not current quotes. ADAC’s test report examined safety and service life, including moderate- and high-stress bench cycles and driving tests.
Five of the six products were rated well. On the tested Golf, their stopping distances from 100 km/h differed by 0.5 metres; ADAC notes the car’s brake-assist system helped keep practical differences small. That narrow spread does not make the systems identical: friction under heat, wear, dust and performance under heavier demands still varied. The test is useful for comparing those particular systems in that application, not for ranking whole brands across vehicles.
How the tested systems compared
| System tested in the VW Golf 7 | What ADAC reported | What that may mean for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| ATE Ceramic | Top practical friction results and low wear; performance declined somewhat under heavy load but remained good. Its low-dust positioning did not keep it cleaner than competitors under heavy load. | A strong result in this test for ordinary braking and wear, with no guarantee that every ATE product will perform the same way. |
| VW original replacement system | Consistent braking across load, speed and temperature, but unusually high disc and especially pad wear in everyday driving. | Predictable braking came with a wear trade-off in this specific comparison. |
| Brembo Xtra | Highest practical test-bench braking performance, but friction faded under load and disc and pad wear were substantially higher than for the other systems. | The strong bench result does not establish that Brembo products generally wear quickly or that this system is best for every use. |
| Zimmermann drilled system | Below-average practical friction and slight fade when hot; overall braking was satisfactory and wear was moderate, including under high load. | A mixed result in this Golf test rather than evidence for a brand-wide verdict. |
| Bosch | Braking was just within the good range. Wear was low under moderate load and relatively higher under stress. A crack appeared in the pad matrix after the heat-friction test; ADAC said it was not a safety defect but noted a possible concern with continued wear. | ADAC characterized it as reasonable for price-conscious drivers who do little mountain or heavily loaded driving. |
| Ridex | The only system rated merely satisfactory. It had below-average friction in customer-like braking, more fade under load—especially when hot—and favorable wear and dust-emission results. | The weakest overall result among these six systems, not proof that Ridex is universally the worst brake brand. |
Why a single “best” label can mislead
Brake systems trade performance dimensions against one another. The top practical bench result in this test belonged to Brembo Xtra, but that system also showed fade under load and substantially higher wear. ATE Ceramic combined top practical friction with low wear, yet its relative performance declined under heavy load and its low-dust positioning did not ensure less dust in that condition. Bosch’s result was acceptable for lighter-duty driving, while the tested Ridex system’s weaker hot and loaded friction was offset by favorable wear and dust results.

- All the replacement brake pad hardware you need to get the job done is included in this kit.
For a real purchase, compare the exact system for your vehicle and intended driving rather than using a brand name as a complete performance measure. Consider ordinary and high-load braking, heat fade, expected wear, dust, cost and fitment. The ADAC data does not establish current prices or which product is best for another vehicle, trim or product generation.
How to choose pads and rotors for your car
- Confirm exact fitment. Check the vehicle’s year, make, model, trim and axle, and verify that the pads and rotors are specified for that application. A vehicle-specific kit is not interchangeable just because the brand is familiar.
- Check product certification and seller reliability. ADAC advises buying from reputable, certified providers and checking for replacement products tested to UN-R 90. Certification and correct fitment are distinct checks: confirm both for the actual product and vehicle.
- Match the choice to how you drive. Regular mountain descents, heavy loads or other demanding conditions make performance under heat and stress especially relevant. A result described as reasonable for lighter-duty driving should not automatically be extended to those conditions.
- Have the work done by a qualified professional. ADAC recommends that brake pad or rotor replacement be handled by someone with the appropriate knowledge and tools. Its 2025 maintenance guidance notes that wear varies with vehicle and driving conditions. Read ADAC’s brake maintenance guidance.
“DOT approved” does not mean NHTSA endorsed the pads
In the United States, calling a brake pad “DOT approved” is not an accurate shorthand for government endorsement. NHTSA says it does not approve motor vehicles or motor vehicle equipment. Its 2005 interpretation says there is no federal motor vehicle safety standard specifically applicable to new brake pads, although several standards regulate complete brake systems for different vehicle types. Brake pads are motor vehicle equipment subject to applicable defect notification and remedy provisions. Read NHTSA’s interpretation on aftermarket brake pads.

What the evidence says about the “worst” brands
This comparison cannot support a list of four worst brands: it tested six systems, one vehicle application and selected products from a limited set of manufacturers. Ridex was the weakest overall result in that test, particularly for friction under heat and load, but calling the entire brand the worst would go beyond what ADAC measured. The other systems also had specific trade-offs; none of those findings establishes a universal ranking across the market.
