For a new automatic car under ₹8 lakh in India, the most defensible shortlist is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, using ex-showroom prices from Autocar India’s July 7, 2026 snapshot. Tata Tiago qualifies only in selected automatic variants because its published overall range extends to ₹8.55 lakh.
That distinction matters: these are not on-road prices. Registration, insurance, road tax and city-specific charges can take an apparently sub-₹8-lakh car over your actual limit. The affordable automatics here use an automated manual transmission (AMT); Maruti calls its Alto K10 system AGS. AMTs reduce clutch work in traffic, but they do not shift exactly like a conventional torque-converter or dual-clutch automatic. Use the table and decision guide below to match the car and variant to your driving rather than treating one model as universally “best.”

What “under ₹8 lakh” means in this comparison
The price ceiling is applied to the ex-showroom price of a new car in India. The dated comparison is based mainly on Autocar India’s price snapshot published July 7, 2026. It is a useful market reference, not a guaranteed October 2026 dealer quote. Manufacturer prices, trim availability and city charges can change, so obtain a written quote for your registration location before paying a booking amount.

Ex-showroom is only one part of the purchase. Your final on-road figure can include registration or road tax, insurance, handling or logistics charges where applicable, and local fees. The official Alto K10 page specifically warns that on-road prices vary by city and charges. Consequently, a car listed at ₹7.90 lakh ex-showroom is not automatically an ₹8-lakh on-road purchase.

The shortlist also uses the price of the automatic configuration, not merely the cheapest manual version of a model. Where a model’s entire range crosses ₹8 lakh, only the qualifying automatic trim should be considered.
Best automatic cars below ₹8 lakh: the dated shortlist
| Model | Ex-showroom range in the July 7, 2026 snapshot | Automatic configuration identified | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki S-Presso | ₹4.75–5.25 lakh | AMT on VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) | It is the least expensive automatic in the cited snapshot, but Autocar notes equipment omissions, particularly around safety. |
| Renault Kwid | ₹4.90–5.61 lakh | 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol AMT on Evolution and Climber | Confirm the exact AMT trim, equipment and current city quote; the range is a model-level figure. |
| Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 | ₹4.95–5.45 lakh | AMT/AGS on VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) | The official page lists ₹4,94,900 for VXi (O) AGS and ₹5,44,900 for VXi+ (O) AGS, ex-showroom. |
| Maruti Suzuki Celerio | ₹5.61–6.73 lakh | AMT on VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ | Autocar describes the shifts as generally timely, with the usual AMT pause controlled. |
| Maruti Suzuki Wagon R | ₹5.97–6.84 lakh | AMT with 1.0-litre VXi and 1.2-litre ZXi/ZXi+ petrol variants | Choose the engine and trim first, then verify that the automatic version remains within your city’s budget. |
| Tata Tiago | ₹6.00–8.55 lakh overall | AMT on selected petrol and CNG trims | Only a particular qualifying automatic variant can be under ₹8 lakh; the cited snapshot does not establish one universal Tiago AMT price. |
The ranges above are ex-showroom figures, not independent ownership costs, fuel-economy tests or safety scores. The available evidence does not provide a directly comparable current real-world mileage test or a single comparable safety rating for every listed automatic variant.
Model-by-model guide
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso: lowest entry price for an automatic
The S-Presso starts at ₹4.75 lakh ex-showroom in the cited July snapshot and reaches ₹5.25 lakh across the listed range. Its AMT is available on the VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) variants. That makes it the price-led choice when the priority is obtaining a new automated manual at the lowest listed entry point.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not select it on price alone. Autocar’s comparison specifically flags equipment omissions, especially in safety-related equipment. Build a variant-level checklist from the dealer’s current specification sheet: count the airbags and other safety equipment actually listed for the AMT trim, rather than assuming the top trim has every feature. Also ask whether the quoted car is the current model year and whether any optional package is being added to the displayed price.
For a primarily urban commute, an S-Presso AMT can make sense when its seating position, visibility and compact footprint suit your roads. If you regularly carry adults or luggage, sit in the rear seat and load the items you normally use before deciding; the lowest price does not tell you whether the cabin meets your needs.
Renault Kwid: AMT availability in two named trims
The Kwid is listed at ₹4.90–5.61 lakh ex-showroom. The automatic is the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol with AMT, offered in the Evolution and Climber trims identified in the comparison. That gives buyers a clear choice between two equipment and styling levels rather than an automatic restricted to a single expensive grade.
Ask the retailer to write the exact trim, transmission and model year on the quotation. A model-level range can include manual versions and other configurations; it should not be read as the price of every Kwid AMT. Compare the Evolution and Climber equipment line by line, then price the same insurance and registration assumptions for both so the apparent trim difference is not confused with a difference in on-road charges.

The Kwid belongs on a short list for buyers who want the smallest possible budget commitment while still selecting an automatic configuration. A normal-route drive is important because AMT response is felt most clearly in crawling traffic, ramps and tight parking manoeuvres.
Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: two officially listed AGS choices
The Alto K10’s cited range is ₹4.95–5.45 lakh ex-showroom. Maruti’s official page identifies the automatic system as AGS (Automated Gear Shift) and lists two automatic trims: VXi (O) AGS at ₹4,94,900 and VXi+ (O) AGS at ₹5,44,900, ex-showroom. These are manufacturer-listed prices accessed in 2026; confirm that they remain current in your city.
Autocar’s assessment is that the Alto K10 AMT works well in city traffic, while its shifts are slower than a manual and overtakes require more planning. Treat that as the publication’s editorial assessment, not a firsthand test by this article. On a test drive, leave enough space for a safe overtake and observe how the gearbox responds when you ease off and then request acceleration. Do not judge it only from a showroom crawl around the block.
The VXi (O) AGS is the price-sensitive starting point; the VXi+ (O) AGS costs ₹50,000 more on the official listed ex-showroom prices. Decide whether the additional equipment in the higher trim is worth that difference for your use, then apply the same on-road quote to both. A cheaper ex-showroom variant can still exceed your cash limit if insurance or registration assumptions differ.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio: a more settled AMT description
The Celerio is listed at ₹5.61–6.73 lakh ex-showroom, with AMT available on VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ trims. This wider automatic trim spread lets you choose equipment without moving immediately to a single flagship grade.
Autocar describes the Celerio’s shifts as generally timely and says the usual AMT pause is controlled. That does not mean every driver will perceive it identically: traffic density, gradient, throttle input and passenger load change the sensation. During a drive, use a steady crawl, a stop-and-go queue and a moderate uphill section if available. Check whether the pause and head movement are acceptable to the people who will use the car daily.
Because the Celerio’s range begins above the smallest cars in this list, compare the specific VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ automatic prices rather than assuming the full ₹5.61–6.73 lakh span applies to AMT versions. The dealer should provide a variant code and a dated price sheet.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: choose the engine and automatic trim together
The Wagon R appears at ₹5.97–6.84 lakh ex-showroom in the cited comparison. The AMT combinations identified are the 1.0-litre VXi and the 1.2-litre ZXi and ZXi+ petrol variants. This is not one automatic model with one powertrain: the engine and trim are linked, so write both into your comparison notes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start by deciding whether your regular use calls for the 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre configuration, then check the corresponding AMT variant price. Do not use the top of the model’s range as proof that every version costs near ₹6.84 lakh, and do not assume a lower-priced engine has the same equipment. Confirm the exact ex-showroom amount and calculate the city-specific on-road total.
The Wagon R is worth considering when a buyer wants the model’s cabin and carrying practicality but still needs two-pedal driving. Sit in every seating position, test child-seat or luggage requirements if relevant, and check parking visibility on your normal route before treating the larger body as an advantage.
Tata Tiago: include only a qualifying automatic variant
The Tiago’s overall cited price range is ₹6.00–8.55 lakh, so the model cannot be described accurately as wholly under ₹8 lakh. AMT is offered on selected petrol and CNG trims. A Tiago belongs in this budget comparison only after the dealer confirms that the specific automatic petrol or CNG variant you want is below ₹8 lakh ex-showroom.
The cited snapshot does not provide one qualifying Tiago AMT price to apply to every configuration. Record the fuel type, trim, transmission and model year on the quote. If the automatic variant is close to the ceiling, leave room for registration and insurance rather than treating ₹8 lakh as the final payable amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow AMT and AGS behave
AMT stands for Automated Manual Transmission. Autocar defines it as a budget-friendly automatic option commonly offered in entry-level and mid-range cars in India. In practical terms, the car automates clutch operation and gear changes that a driver would otherwise perform in a manual. Maruti uses the name AGS for its Alto K10 implementation; the underlying category is still an automated manual.
“Automatic” therefore does not guarantee one uniform driving feel. AMTs can produce a brief pause or a small head nod during an upshift, especially when the driver applies or releases the accelerator abruptly. Smooth, progressive throttle inputs generally make the transition easier to accept. The Alto K10 and Celerio observations above illustrate why model-specific driving matters: one may need more planning for an overtake, while another may feel more controlled in ordinary traffic.

- Buyer's Guide: The seat guard for car seat between seat & console measures 15.75*2.7*1.53", suitable for gaps of 1.43-1.53" in width, please double-check carefully the distance between your seat and the center console before placing an order
- Storage and Filling in One: Differ from traditional single-function gap fillers, gap filler for car incorporates storage function, offers you the convenience of storing phones and various other items, so that you can access them at any time while driving
- Avoid Items Slipping: With the bumps and vibrations of the car, phones, keys may fall into the seat crevices, which is difficult to pick up, and distracts the driver's attention. Car gap seat filler fills gaps seamlessly to create an effective barrier
- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
AMT is attractive at this price because it preserves two-pedal convenience without requiring the buyer to move into a more expensive transmission category. Its trade-off is response consistency during quick acceleration, hill starts and repeated stop-start manoeuvres. A test drive in your usual traffic is more informative than a generic label.
Which automatic car is best under ₹8 lakh for your use?
If the lowest listed price is the priority
Begin with the S-Presso, which has the lowest starting automatic range in the cited snapshot, then compare it directly with the Kwid and Alto K10. Check safety equipment and essential convenience features on the exact AMT trim before accepting a price advantage. The official Alto figures make its two AGS grades easy to cost precisely, while the S-Presso and Kwid require the dealer to confirm the selected variant’s current quote.
If you spend most of the day in stop-start traffic
Put Celerio, Alto K10 and the other shortlisted AMTs on the same urban route. Observe low-speed smoothness, the pause between gears and how easily you can modulate the accelerator at walking pace. Autocar’s description of the Celerio’s controlled pause and the Alto’s city suitability are useful starting points, not substitutes for your own route evaluation.
If highway overtaking is frequent
Do not choose solely by the cheapest ex-showroom number. Ask for a safe, legal stretch where you can evaluate response from a steady cruising speed, and leave generous planning distance. Autocar specifically notes that the Alto K10 AMT is slower than its manual for overtaking. Compare the exact car you will buy, including its engine and load, rather than extrapolating from another model’s behaviour.
If cabin and luggage flexibility matter
Inspect the S-Presso, Kwid, Alto K10, Celerio, Wagon R and Tiago with the people and items you normally carry. Measure practical fit: rear-seat knee room for your passengers, access for child seats, boot opening, and whether luggage blocks visibility. Published price does not establish usable space, and a test drive with only the driver can hide an everyday compromise.
If you want a particular fuel choice
The cited automatic configurations are predominantly petrol AMTs. The Tiago is the exception in this list with selected petrol and CNG automatic trims. Confirm that the CNG automatic variant is actually available in your city and remains below ₹8 lakh ex-showroom; availability and pricing are variant-specific and volatile.
How to keep an ₹8-lakh budget realistic
- Set the budget basis. Decide whether ₹8 lakh is your ex-showroom ceiling or your maximum on-road spend. Tell the dealer this explicitly.
- Choose the model and exact automatic trim. Record the transmission name (AMT or AGS), fuel type, engine where relevant, and variant code.
- Request a dated, itemised quotation. Separate ex-showroom, registration or road tax, insurance, and every optional or dealer-added charge. Ask which items are mandatory in your state.
- Check the latest manufacturer price. The July 7, 2026 comparison is a dated snapshot; October pricing can differ because of revisions, offers or stock changes.
- Compare like for like. Use the same insurance coverage, registration assumptions and accessories when comparing two variants. Otherwise a lower headline price may simply reflect missing costs.
- Leave a contingency. If the on-road ceiling is strict, do not spend the entire allowance on ex-showroom price. Local fees alone can erase a small margin.
- Get delivery details in writing. Confirm manufacturing month, warranty terms, included equipment and the final amount before signing.
AMT test-drive checklist
- Start from rest several times using a light, steady accelerator input. Note any pause or head movement.
- Repeat a crawl-and-stop sequence to simulate a congested queue.
- Try a gentle incline or ramp and check whether the car moves predictably without excessive accelerator.
- Make a controlled acceleration run from a steady speed where legal. Judge whether the response gives you enough planning time for your normal overtakes.
- Test reverse parking, tight turns and stop-start manoeuvres; these expose low-speed calibration differences.
- Drive with the passengers who will use the car, if possible. Their comfort is part of the transmission decision.
- Listen for warning lights or unusual noises, and verify that the displayed transmission and variant match the quotation.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a model range with an automatic price
A range such as ₹4.75–5.25 lakh describes the cited model pricing, not necessarily every AMT trim. Always ask for the automatic variant’s own ex-showroom figure. The Tiago demonstrates the risk most clearly: its overall range reaches ₹8.55 lakh even though selected AMT versions may qualify.

Treating ex-showroom as the final bill
Registration, insurance and local charges can push the on-road number beyond the limit. Use an itemised city quotation and keep the budget definition consistent across dealers.
Assuming every automatic shifts alike
All of these affordable configurations use AMT-type systems, but the cited assessments differ between models. Drive the exact car in traffic that resembles your commute and evaluate the pause, smoothness and overtaking response.
Buying a higher trim without checking its purpose
The Alto K10 AGS prices differ by ₹50,000 between VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) on the official listing. For every model, compare the equipment you will actually use with the added cost, then include the same on-road charges in both calculations.

A practical decision order
- Filter by your true budget basis: on-road if ₹8 lakh is your maximum cheque, ex-showroom if you have separate funds for registration and insurance.
- Remove variants that do not meet your fuel, seating or luggage requirements.
- Compare the exact AMT or AGS trims remaining, including safety and essential equipment.
- Drive at least two finalists on the same urban route and, if relevant, an open-road section.
- Choose the car whose transmission behaviour and quoted total fit your routine, not the one with the lowest headline number alone.
Bottom line: which cars deserve your first shortlist?
Start with the S-Presso, Kwid and Alto K10 if entry price is decisive; the Alto K10 has two manufacturer-listed AGS prices that make an exact initial budget easy to calculate. Consider the Celerio when controlled city AMT behaviour is more important than the lowest starting figure. Add the Wagon R when its available 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre AMT combinations better match your space and engine needs. Include the Tiago only after confirming a specific petrol or CNG AMT variant below ₹8 lakh.
Whichever model you select, treat the July 7, 2026 figures as a dated ex-showroom reference, obtain a current city quotation, and test the AMT in your real traffic before booking.
