For most shoppers, the 2026 Honda CR-V is the broadest Toyota RAV4 alternative because it still offers a gasoline model as well as a hybrid, has a published starting price of $32,370 including destination, and provides substantial cargo room. The right choice changes with your priority: the Hyundai Tucson is compelling for maximum space and plug-in-hybrid rear-seat comfort, the Subaru Forester suits shoppers focused on passenger room and AWD-oriented configurations, and the Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-50 and Chevrolet Equinox deserve local-inventory consideration rather than a one-size-fits-all ranking.
This guide is for U.S. buyers comparing 2026-model-year compact SUVs. MSRP, equipment, incentives, inventory and EPA information can vary by trim, drivetrain, region and date, so verify the exact vehicle and window sticker with a local dealer.

What changed for the 2026 RAV4—and why alternatives matter
The most important comparison point is powertrain choice. An Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press reports that the 2026 RAV4 is hybrid-only, with Toyota estimating up to 44 mpg combined. The 2026 CR-V, by contrast, remains available with a gasoline engine and hybrid trims rated by the EPA at up to 40 mpg combined. That makes the CR-V the clearest substitute for buyers who want the RAV4’s general size and utility but do not want to commit to a hybrid.

The same Edmunds/AP comparison reports up to 54 miles of electric range for the main 2026 RAV4 plug-in-hybrid trims, compared with 32 miles of EPA electric range for the 2026 Tucson plug-in hybrid. The Tucson PHEV offers more rear legroom in that comparison, while the RAV4 PHEV retains a cargo advantage behind the rear seats. These figures apply only to the plug-in versions, not the conventional hybrids.

Honda’s competitor chart identifies these cargo and passenger figures as maximum capacities. Cargo measurement methods, seat positions and trim configurations can differ, so use them to narrow a search and then confirm the exact specification.
2026 Honda CR-V: the best all-round RAV4 substitute
Why it belongs at the top of the shortlist
The CR-V covers the widest range of buyer needs in the cited data. It has a gasoline version for shoppers prioritizing a lower entry price or who do not want a hybrid system, plus hybrid trims for buyers focused on efficiency. Its 76.5-cubic-foot maximum cargo figure exceeds the RAV4’s 70.4 cubic feet in Honda’s comparison chart, while its 106.0-cubic-foot maximum passenger volume gives adults useful room without requiring a larger vehicle class.

Published 2026 pricing and efficiency
American Honda Motor Co.’s January 6, 2026 release lists the CR-V LX 2WD at $32,370 including destination, before tax, registration, options or dealer-specific charges. Honda lists that configuration at 30 mpg combined EPA. The CR-V Sport Hybrid 2WD is listed at $37,080 including destination and 40 mpg combined EPA. These are U.S. MSRP figures for the named trims, not guaranteed transaction prices.

Who should choose it
- Buyers who want a conventional gasoline option alongside a hybrid.
- Households that use the rear seats and cargo area regularly.
- Shoppers who want a direct RAV4-size alternative with a clearly published starting price.
The CR-V is not automatically the best choice for every buyer. Someone who can charge at home and drives mostly short trips may value a PHEV’s electric range; someone who prioritizes maximum rear legroom may prefer the Tucson; and a shopper focused on a particular trim’s local discount may find another model more affordable.
2026 Hyundai Tucson: space and PHEV comfort
The strongest space argument
Honda’s 2026 comparison chart lists the Tucson at 80.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume, the highest figure among the vehicles in that chart. It also lists 108.2 cubic feet of maximum passenger volume. Those are manufacturer-reported capacities, so check whether the vehicle you are considering uses the same seat and measurement configuration.
What the PHEV comparison found
For plug-in hybrids, the Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press reports 41.3 inches of Tucson PHEV rear legroom versus 37.8 inches in the RAV4 PHEV. It characterizes the Tucson as more comfortable for rear passengers. The Tucson PHEV has 31.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, compared with 33.6 cubic feet for the RAV4 PHEV, so the comfort advantage does not translate into more cargo in that specific comparison.

Best fit
Choose the Tucson for a family that regularly carries adults in the second row, wants the largest published maximum-cargo figure in the general comparison, or is evaluating a PHEV and values rear-seat comfort over the RAV4 PHEV’s longer reported electric range. Confirm charging access, incentives and the exact PHEV trim before comparing total cost.

2026 Kia Sportage: a practical direct rival to investigate locally
The Sportage is a legitimate compact-SUV alternative, but the cited material establishes less about its 2026 powertrains, pricing and fuel economy than it does for the CR-V. Honda’s chart lists 74.1 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume. That places it above the RAV4’s 70.4-cubic-foot figure in the same chart, but cargo capacity alone cannot establish an overall winner.
Use the Sportage as a trim-by-trim shopping candidate. Compare the advertised vehicle’s drivetrain, standard safety and infotainment equipment, seat comfort, warranty terms, destination charge and dealer-installed options against an equivalently equipped RAV4 or CR-V. A locally available Sportage with a meaningful incentive can be a better purchase than a nominally cheaper model that requires a long-distance search or unwanted add-ons.
2026 Subaru Forester: passenger room and AWD-focused shopping
Roomiest passenger figure in the chart
Honda lists the Forester at 110.8 cubic feet of maximum passenger volume, ahead of the Tucson’s 108.2 and CR-V’s 106.0. Its maximum cargo volume is listed at 74.4 cubic feet. If rear-seat space is more important than absolute cargo volume, the Forester deserves a close look.

Car and Driver included the 2026 Forester Hybrid in a four-vehicle comparison with the CR-V Hybrid, Mazda CX-50 Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid. The test used a mixed route and AWD configurations, making it editorial comparative testing rather than an official specification table. The cited material does not establish a single fuel-economy result or a reliability ranking for the Forester, so compare the EPA label and equipment on the exact vehicle in front of you.

Forester shoppers should define what “AWD” means for their use: winter traction on paved roads, unpaved access roads, a steep driveway or serious off-road travel are different requirements. AWD can help maintain traction, but it does not guarantee ground clearance, tire capability or off-road performance.
2026 Mazda CX-50: include it when driving feel is a priority
The CX-50 Hybrid was one of the four vehicles in Car and Driver’s 2025-published test of 2026 vehicles, alongside the CR-V Hybrid, Forester Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid. That test used AWD configurations and a mixed route, so its observations are comparative editorial testing rather than manufacturer specifications.
The available material does not establish a complete CX-50 price, cargo, passenger-volume, reliability or ownership-cost comparison. Treat it as a serious test-drive candidate if its seating position, controls and road manners suit you, then build a like-for-like worksheet using the exact hybrid trim, destination charge, options and local transaction price. Do not infer superiority from its appearance in the test alone.
Chevrolet Equinox: a shortlist option, not a cargo leader
Honda’s competitor page includes the Equinox and lists 63.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume. That is below the 70.4 cubic feet shown for the RAV4 and the larger figures listed for the CR-V, Tucson, Sportage and Forester in the same chart. The number is useful when cargo capacity is a hard requirement, but it is not enough to rank the Equinox overall.

Consider it when a nearby dealer has the drivetrain, safety equipment and price you need. Verify rear-seat comfort, cargo-floor configuration, standard versus optional technology and the complete out-the-door quote before deciding.
Conventional hybrid or plug-in hybrid?
Conventional hybrid
A conventional hybrid recharges its battery through the vehicle’s system and does not require you to plug in. In the cited 2026 data, the CR-V Sport Hybrid 2WD is EPA-rated at 40 mpg combined, while Toyota estimates up to 44 mpg combined for the RAV4. Because those figures come from different manufacturers and configurations, compare the EPA label on each specific trim rather than treating the numbers as a controlled head-to-head test.
Plug-in hybrid
A PHEV can use grid electricity for part of its driving when charged regularly, then operate like a hybrid after the usable charge is depleted. The Edmunds/AP comparison reports up to 54 miles of electric range for the main RAV4 PHEV trims and 32 miles for the Tucson PHEV. Those ranges matter only if your charging routine supports them; home electrical access, charging time, utility rates and local incentives can change the practical value.
Questions to answer before paying for a PHEV
- Can you charge at home or at work on most driving days?
- Does your normal daily distance fit within the vehicle’s rated electric range?
- Will a charging installation, electricity rate or incentive alter the ownership calculation?
- Do you need the PHEV’s cargo and passenger layout, not merely its range number?
How to compare price without being misled
- Start with MSRP including destination. The CR-V prices above include destination; confirm whether competing listings do the same.
- Match drivetrain and trim. A 2WD gasoline SUV is not a fair price comparison with an AWD hybrid or PHEV.
- Separate mandatory and optional charges. Add tax, registration, documentation fees, accessories and dealer-installed products only after identifying which are unavoidable in your state.
- Request the out-the-door figure in writing. Incentives may depend on financing, residency, trade-in status, inventory age or eligibility.
- Check more than one nearby vehicle. Regional inventory and dealer pricing can change the recommendation faster than a national MSRP table.
AWD, comfort, technology and ownership questions
AWD and actual use
Confirm whether AWD is standard, optional or limited to particular powertrains on the trim you want. Then match the hardware to your roads, climate, tires and ground-clearance needs. “Has AWD” is not a complete off-road assessment.
Comfort and passenger space
Numbers identify potential room, but a test drive answers questions the capacity chart cannot: entry height, thigh support, second-row recline, seat-cushion length, outward visibility and noise on your local roads. The Tucson PHEV rear-legroom finding is specific to the PHEV comparison and should not be generalized to every Tucson or RAV4.
Infotainment and safety
Compare the exact trim’s screen, smartphone integration, driver-assistance features, camera views and available upgrades. Equipment can change by model year and trim; do not assume a feature shown in a top trim is standard on the base vehicle.
Reliability, warranty and service
The cited material does not establish a comprehensive independent reliability, resale-value or ownership-cost ranking. Obtain the current warranty booklet, maintenance schedule and service pricing for the exact vehicle, and ask the dealer how hybrid or PHEV components are handled under warranty in your state.

A practical decision framework
- Choose the CR-V first when you want the most flexible gas-versus-hybrid choice, a published $32,370 base MSRP including destination, and strong cargo capacity.
- Choose the Tucson first when maximum published cargo space or PHEV rear-seat comfort is more important than the RAV4 PHEV’s reported electric range.
- Put the Forester first on your test-drive list when passenger room and an AWD-oriented configuration are central to your use.
- Investigate the Sportage when its local trim, equipment and transaction price are competitive; its 74.1-cubic-foot cargo figure is useful but not decisive.
- Test-drive the CX-50 Hybrid when driving position and road feel are major factors, while verifying the missing price and equipment details yourself.
- Keep the Equinox on the local list when availability or pricing is attractive, but account for its lower published 63.5-cubic-foot maximum cargo figure.
- Stay with the RAV4 if its hybrid-only lineup, Toyota-estimated up-to-44-mpg figure or reported PHEV electric range best matches your needs and local deal.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Write down your annual mileage, passenger count, cargo needs and charging access.
- Choose gasoline, hybrid or PHEV before comparing prices.
- Compare the same drivetrain, seating configuration and equipment level.
- Check the EPA label or manufacturer estimate with its attribution and test condition.
- Measure the cargo area with your own stroller, pet crate, sports gear or mobility equipment.
- Drive on the roads you use most, including a highway segment and a parking maneuver.
- Get written out-the-door quotes from local inventory and recheck destination, fees and incentives.
- Review warranty and service requirements for the exact VIN or window sticker.
