The Škoda Octavia Estate remains the luggage-space benchmark in this evidence, while the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer offers the widest powertrain choice and a lower tested entry price. The right alternative depends on whether you prioritise carrying capacity, hybrid or electric running, purchase cost, rear-seat flexibility or equipment. This guide compares the two reference cars and sets out a disciplined shortlist of Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, Kia Ceed Sportswagon, Volkswagen Golf Estate, Peugeot 308 SW and SEAT Leon Sportstourer models to investigate before buying.
Quick answer: which estate should you start with?
Start with the Octavia Estate if your family routinely carries a pram, luggage, sports equipment or bulky shopping and you want the most generous quoted boot in the comparison. Start with the Astra Sports Tourer if you want a lower-priced tested hybrid, a 40/20/40 rear-seat arrangement, or the ability to choose petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains from one body style.

Those conclusions apply to specific versions, not automatically to every car wearing the same model name. The Astra Electric has a different, smaller luggage capacity from the combustion and hybrid versions, and trim, battery and grant rules can alter the price you actually pay. Treat the five additional models as a targeted shortlist: each may solve a different weakness of the two reference estates, but their exact UK specifications and prices must be checked for the model year and trim you are considering.

| Item | Škoda Octavia Estate 1.5 TSI DSG SportLine | Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 1.2 Hybrid Ultimate | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price in the dated independent comparison | £29,725 | £26,495 | The Astra test car started lower by £3,230, but these are version-specific prices from the 17 October 2026 comparison. |
| Economy, test/official as reported | 47.9/54.3 mpg | 41.3/57.6 mpg | Use the same test basis when comparing cars; official figures are not a promise of everyday consumption. |
| Quoted boot with rear seats up | 640 litres | Not stated for the tested hybrid in the supplied evidence | Do not infer the Astra’s capacity from the electric model or from another body style. |
| Quoted boot with rear seats folded | 1,700 litres | Not stated for the tested hybrid in the supplied evidence | The Octavia has the clearer published load-volume advantage. |
| Powertrain breadth | Petrol estate represented by the tested 1.5 TSI DSG | Petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions are listed | The Astra gives buyers more ways to match fuel use, driving pattern and charging access. |
| Rear-seat and load features | Exact feature list depends on trim | Intelli-Space includes 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, boot-floor storage and side storage nets | The Astra can preserve two rear seats while passing long items through the centre section. |
The comparison data above comes from a dated UK test and manufacturer information. Prices, standard equipment and efficiency figures can change with model year, registration date, options and local incentives, so use them to establish priorities rather than as a substitute for a current quotation.

Which has the biggest boot?
Octavia Estate: the capacity-first choice
Škoda quotes 640 litres behind the Octavia Estate’s rear seats and 1,700 litres with them folded. Those are the largest directly stated figures in the supplied evidence, which is why the Octavia is the sensible first inspection for families who fill the load bay every week. A large nominal volume is most useful when the opening is wide, the floor is easy to load and the rear seats fold without leaving an awkward step, so inspect those details rather than relying on litres alone.
Astra Sports Tourer: useful flexibility, version-dependent volume
Vauxhall’s Intelli-Space layout is designed around flexible loading. Its 40/20/40 rear bench lets you carry a long object through the middle while retaining an outer rear seat, and the boot-floor compartment and side nets can stop smaller items moving around. The supplied evidence does not state a seats-up or seats-folded capacity for the petrol or hybrid Astra tested in the comparison, so ask the dealer to demonstrate your own pushchair, dog crate or cases.
Astra Sports Tourer Electric: a clear battery-related trade-off
The electric Astra is quoted at 516 litres with the seats up and 1,553 litres folded. That is less than the Octavia’s published capacity and illustrates why an estate’s powertrain matters to practicality. Do not use the electric Astra’s figures as a proxy for every Astra Sports Tourer, or assume that a petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid have identical under-floor packaging. Obtain the exact technical sheet for the trim and battery you intend to order.
How to test a boot properly
- Measure the items you actually carry, including the folded length of a pushchair or the height of a pet crate.
- Place those items in the boot with the parcel shelf fitted; a car that works only with the shelf removed may not meet your day-to-day need.
- Fold each section of the rear bench and check whether the resulting floor is flat enough for your equipment.
- Try the loading lip, tailgate height and under-floor storage while holding a typical shopping bag or suitcase.
- Check whether charging cables, a spare wheel or a repair kit occupy the space you expected to use.
Powertrains: petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric?
Conventional petrol
A petrol estate remains the least complicated choice if you cannot charge at home or work and your annual mileage is unpredictable. The Octavia example in the comparison uses a 1.5-litre TSI engine with a DSG transmission; the Astra is also available with a petrol powertrain. Compare the exact gearbox, towing rating, service schedule and real-world route profile rather than assuming that engine size alone predicts running cost.
Hybrid
The Astra’s 1.2 Hybrid Ultimate was the lower-priced car in the dated independent test, but its reported test economy was below its official figure. That gap is normal enough to make route and temperature important: short urban trips, motorway cruising, cold weather and a heavily loaded estate can all change consumption. A hybrid is most attractive when your use includes repeated slowing and acceleration, yet you should still verify boot layout and rear-seat space for the chosen battery installation.

Plug-in hybrid
A plug-in hybrid Astra is listed in Vauxhall’s 2026A range. It can make sense when you can charge regularly and most weekday journeys fit within the usable electric operation of the vehicle, while longer trips can use the combustion engine. Ask for the current electric-only range, charge time, cable specification, boot capacity and kerb weight for the exact trim. A plug-in hybrid that is rarely charged can carry additional hardware without delivering its intended fuel-saving benefit.
Electric
The Astra Sports Tourer Electric uses a 58.3 kWh total battery, of which 55.4 kWh is usable, and produces 156 PS and 270 Nm. Its stated maximum range is up to 275 miles under WLTP testing. DC charging from 20% to 80% is quoted at about 32 minutes when connected to a charger capable of up to 100 kW. These are laboratory and specified charging conditions: cold weather, motorway speed, payload, battery temperature, charger sharing and the car’s charge curve can all reduce the result.
For family use, home charging is the practical dividing line. If you can install and regularly use a suitable domestic charger, overnight charging can remove fuel stops from normal commuting. If you depend on public charging, check the locations on your regular routes, payment methods, accessibility with children and luggage, and whether the car’s maximum charging rate matches the sites you expect to use. Plan long journeys around a realistic arrival charge rather than the headline range.
UK prices and trim information to verify
Vauxhall’s Model Year 2026A on-the-road guide, dated 27 May 2026, lists the Astra Sports Tourer Griffin at £27,495 with petrol and £29,995 with hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric powertrains. The electric figure is shown before the stated Electric Car Grant adjustment, and GS and Ultimate trims cost more. Because grants, registrations and manufacturer pricing can move, ask for an itemised on-the-road quote that identifies the grant treatment, delivery charges, options, metallic paint, finance assumptions and warranty.
The independent comparison’s £26,495 Astra and £29,725 Octavia prices describe particular test specifications and should not be mixed with the Griffin list prices. A cheaper advertised car may have a different trim, gearbox, engine or equipment level. Before comparing monthly payments, put both cars on the same basis: cash price, deposit, term, annual mileage, optional final payment and total amount payable.

Five alternatives worth investigating
The following cars form a useful UK compact-estate shortlist. The available evidence does not provide a complete, current specification table for them, so no unverified boot figures, prices or warranty lengths are presented here. Confirm each item against the exact build sheet and registration date.

Put the Corolla Touring Sports at the top of a hybrid-focused search. Ask how its hybrid system behaves on your mix of urban, A-road and motorway driving, whether the available battery and trim alter boot space, and what equipment is standard at the price you have been quoted. A test drive should include low-speed manoeuvres, joining a motorway and a fully loaded inspection, because quiet urban efficiency does not automatically predict motorway economy.
Kia Ceed Sportswagon
The Ceed Sportswagon deserves attention when purchase value and straightforward family-estate packaging matter more than having every electrified option. Compare the exact engine and transmission, rear-seat legroom, safety equipment, infotainment, warranty terms and servicing requirements. Check whether the specification you want is available immediately or only through a particular trim or powertrain.
Volkswagen Golf Estate
Consider the Golf Estate if refinement, driving position and equipment integration are high priorities. Identify which driver-assistance features are standard, optional or bundled, and operate the infotainment system before ordering. Rear-seat space and boot usability should be assessed with your own child seats and luggage; a familiar badge does not guarantee that every trim has the same practical details.
Peugeot 308 SW
The 308 SW is a sensible comparison for buyers who value equipment and a distinctive interior as well as estate practicality. Verify the powertrain’s effect on load volume, the visibility and steering-wheel position for every driver, and the charging hardware if you are considering an electrified version. Confirm that the advertised price includes the safety and convenience features you regard as essential.

SEAT Leon Sportstourer
The Leon Sportstourer can suit drivers seeking conventional family-estate packaging with a sportier presentation. Compare rear-seat access, ride comfort on poor surfaces, engine and gearbox combinations, and the amount of standard equipment. A back-to-back drive with the Octavia and Astra is more informative than relying on trim names, because suspension and wheel choices can materially change comfort.
Choose by the problem you need to solve
| Your priority | Best starting point | Checks before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum luggage volume | Octavia Estate | Load your largest item; verify the exact trim’s seat-folding mechanism and floor shape. |
| Lowest tested entry price among the two reference cars | Astra Sports Tourer 1.2 Hybrid Ultimate | Match trim, gearbox, options and total finance cost; the dated test price is not a universal current offer. |
| Petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric choice | Astra Sports Tourer range | Compare boot volume, kerb weight, towing limits and delivery timing for each powertrain. |
| Hybrid-led shortlist | Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, then Astra hybrid | Request current battery, boot and warranty information and drive both on your normal roads. |
| Flexible loading of long items | Astra Sports Tourer with Intelli-Space | Check that the 40/20/40 split is fitted to the trim you are buying and test it with passengers aboard. |
| Electric family estate | Astra Sports Tourer Electric | Plan home/public charging, assess winter and motorway margins, and accept the electric version’s lower quoted luggage volume. |
| Value-oriented conventional estate | Kia Ceed Sportswagon or SEAT Leon Sportstourer | Verify current UK prices, equipment, warranty and available engines rather than relying on the shortlist label. |
| Refinement and equipment | Volkswagen Golf Estate or Peugeot 308 SW | Drive on your usual roads and price the safety, infotainment and comfort options you actually need. |
A repeatable buying process
1. Write a real-world requirement sheet
- Record the number and age of passengers, child-seat types, weekly luggage and longest item.
- Separate routine journeys from occasional holiday trips; do not size the powertrain only for one annual drive.
- Note access to home, workplace and en-route charging, plus whether you tow or carry bikes.
- Set a cash or total-cost ceiling before looking at monthly-payment advertisements.
2. Shortlist identical specifications
For each car, record body style, engine, battery, gearbox, trim, wheel size, options, on-the-road price and delivery estimate in one sheet. This prevents a highly equipped estate from being compared with a base model and makes grant or finance assumptions visible.
3. Test practicality with your own equipment
Bring child seats, a suitcase, a folded buggy or the item that normally forces you to borrow another car. Sit in the rear with the front seats set for the tallest regular occupant. Open the tailgate on a slope if possible, inspect visibility and check whether charging leads or parcel shelves consume usable space.
4. Drive representative routes
Use urban stop-start roads, a fast A-road and a motorway. Listen for tyre and wind noise, assess ride quality over broken surfaces, and check how the gearbox or hybrid system responds when joining traffic. For an electric car, ask the retailer to explain battery pre-conditioning and the navigation system’s charging planning rather than accepting a single range number.
5. Recheck the written offer
- Confirm the exact model year, trim and powertrain code.
- Check that every promised feature appears on the order form.
- Ask how any grant, contribution or finance incentive changes the final amount.
- Read the warranty, battery coverage, servicing intervals and roadside-assistance terms.
- Get the quoted delivery date and cancellation conditions in writing.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Astra estate has the same boot
The electric Astra’s published luggage figures differ from the Octavia’s and cannot be transferred to petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid versions. Always use the specification for the battery and trim you are buying.

Comparing official economy with a test result as if they were equivalent
The reported Astra and Octavia mpg pairs contain a test figure and an official figure. Treat the test as one controlled comparison and the official result as a standardised reference; neither predicts your exact fuel use. Your payload, weather, speed and route matter.
Shopping by headline list price
A dated comparison price, a manufacturer list price and a grant-adjusted electric price answer different questions. Compare like-for-like on-the-road totals and include options, paint, delivery, finance interest and charging equipment.
Buying an electric estate without a charging plan
Range and a 20-to-80 per cent charging estimate are useful only when the required charger is available. Map your regular journeys, identify dependable rapid chargers and budget for home installation if you need it. Keep a winter motorway journey as your stress test, not an idealised summer commute.

Ignoring the rear bench
Boot litres do not reveal whether three passengers fit comfortably or whether a centre loading section is useful. Sit behind the driver, install your child seats and operate the split-folding mechanism before you sign.
Bottom line
Choose the Octavia Estate when maximum, clearly published luggage capacity and uncomplicated family practicality outrank every other consideration. Choose the Astra Sports Tourer when lower tested entry cost, Intelli-Space flexibility or a choice spanning petrol through fully electric powertrains is more important. The Corolla Touring Sports, Ceed Sportswagon, Golf Estate, 308 SW and Leon Sportstourer are worthwhile alternatives to test, but their current UK prices and specifications must be verified for the exact trim. Whichever model wins, make the decision with your own load, route and charging requirements rather than a badge or a headline figure.
