How can I check whether a used BMW i4 has an open recall?
Recall and technical-campaign status is VIN-specific. BMW directs owners to its recall website to check for open recalls or campaigns: BMW Customer Support. In the United States, also enter the VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. Check again close to purchase and ask the seller or BMW retailer for proof that any required work is complete.
Past recall notices show that campaigns have existed; they do not prove that a particular i4 is affected or that its work remains outstanding. For example, NHTSA published historical BMW notices in 2023 and 2024: 2023 notice and 2024 acknowledgement. Use the live VIN lookup for the car you are considering.

How do I check the battery health on a used BMW i4?
Ask for a battery State of Health report. SoH compares the battery’s current capacity with its original capacity; BMW describes it as the maximum energy capacity of a used EV battery compared with a new one on its CPO i4 information page. Request the report’s date, the measured result, and supporting details, along with invoices for any battery repairs.
Do not treat a single dashboard range estimate as a battery test. Displayed range changes with recent driving and conditions, and the cited BMW information does not set a universal pass/fail SoH threshold for every used i4. BMW notes that range and charging performance decline with normal battery aging; that statement is not a prediction of the condition of a particular car.

Does the BMW i4 battery warranty transfer to a second owner?
Do not assume that the original warranty, a CPO benefit, or a service package has identical terms across markets. Ask BMW to confirm the specific car’s remaining coverage by VIN and original in-service date, and get the applicable terms in writing.
United States: standard battery coverage

United States: separate CPO capacity protection
BMW’s CPO materials describe separate battery State of Health protection for qualifying electric vehicles. The published 75% threshold is tied to program model-year and retail-delivery eligibility conditions; it is not a universal threshold for all used i4s. Confirm whether the VIN qualifies and obtain the current written terms from BMW: CPO i4 information and CPO EV warranty information.
Australia: check the certificate that came with the car
BMW Australia’s 2019 supplementary battery certificate says subsequent owners may claim its stated benefits before expiry, subject to the certificate’s requirements and exclusions. Its 70% capacity threshold belongs to that certificate’s terms; it should not be applied to other markets, model years, or warranties. Read the BMW Australia certificate and ask BMW to confirm whether it applies to the vehicle.

What to inspect on the car and test drive
Exterior, cabin, and warning messages
- Check body panels, glass, lights, doors, hatch, and cabin controls for damage, poor repairs, or signs of water intrusion.
- Test seats and their functions, displays, cameras, navigation, climate controls, and driver-assistance features.
- If practical, inspect the car cold and after it has warmed up. Confirm that no warning messages remain after startup.
Tires, wheels, brakes, and suspension
Inspect every tire for tread, damage, age markings, and uneven wear. Confirm tire sizes and load and speed ratings match the car’s specification; look for bent or cracked wheels. Charging and road test
If practical, test both AC and DC charging. Check the charge-port door and locking operation, and verify that charging starts and stops normally. Ask the seller to explain any charging warnings or repairs. These are functional checks, not evidence that the i4 has a particular model-wide charging fault rate.

Drive at low and higher speeds where legal. Listen for tire, suspension, or drivetrain noises, and check braking and steering. Have a BMW retailer or EV-qualified technician perform a pre-purchase inspection; BMW CPO status describes an inspection process but does not replace reviewing the actual paperwork and exclusions.
BMW CPO versus a non-certified used i4
Certification is one comparison point, not a substitute for checking the car’s records, VIN, and condition. BMW USA describes a BMW-trained technician’s 360-degree inspection and additional CPO coverage; ask to see the actual inspection record and confirm which benefits apply to the VIN.

BMW Australia describes Condition Based Servicing as monitoring service needs and notifying the owner when service is due; that is market-specific information, not evidence of the service history of a particular car.
