Best alternatives to the Hyundai Bayon: Ford Puma, Toyota Yaris Cross and Renault Captur compared (UK, 2026)

The Ford Puma, Toyota Yaris Cross and Renault Captur each beat the Hyundai Bayon in a different area. Here is how their engines, practicality, prices and caveats compare in the UK.

The strongest Hyundai Bayon alternatives for UK buyers are the Ford Puma for flexible cargo space, the Toyota Yaris Cross for a full-hybrid drivetrain and available all-wheel drive, and the Renault Captur for a sliding rear bench and broad powertrain choice. The right answer depends on how you use the rear seats, whether you can charge (these cars do not require charging), your gearbox preference, and the exact on-the-road price of the trim you want.

Hyundai’s UK website currently shows the existing Bayon range while also announcing an all-new Bayon. Keep those cars separate: the current model has published trim prices and a 1.0-litre 90PS petrol specification, whereas the successor’s technical data remains subject to final homologation. Compare a like-for-like model year, engine, transmission, equipment level and dealer quote before deciding.

What is the Hyundai Bayon situation in the UK?

There are two different Bayon stories on Hyundai’s UK site. The current car is still presented with named trims and prices. Hyundai’s December 2025 announcement describes a revised strategy using a 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol engine producing 90PS, with a manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT): Hyundai’s December 2025 UK release.

The live trims page lists Black Line at £23,795 and Tech Line at £25,295. The same page also displays a generic “From £24,065” figure, so the number may reflect a different offer, stock status or presentation context. Check the trim selector and the on-the-road breakdown rather than treating £24,065 as the universal starting price: Hyundai Bayon trims and prices.

Hyundai has also announced an all-new Bayon. Its launch page says a hybrid powertrain is planned after initial combustion-engine versions, but final technical data is pending homologation. Dimensions, luggage capacity, fuel economy, equipment and prices for that successor should therefore be treated as provisional until Hyundai publishes a final UK specification: Hyundai all-new Bayon launch information. Do not use projected successor figures to compare with the current Bayon or with today’s rival cars.

Shortlist at a glance

Model Why shortlist it Published evidence Important qualification
Ford Puma Useful under-floor storage and a flexible boot Up to 456 litres including an 80-litre MegaBox; 1.0-litre 48V mild-hybrid petrol; manual or seven-speed automatic Mild-hybrid assistance is not plug-in capability. Confirm the exact trim’s capacity and equipment.
Toyota Yaris Cross Full-hybrid choice and front- or all-wheel drive Toyota lists hybrid petrol powertrains and FWD/AWD. Its product page shows 55.3–64.1mpg Official prices conflict: £27,245 in the 2026 price list versus £27,445 on the current product page. Verify live pricing.
Renault Captur Rear-seat flexibility and petrol or full-hybrid options Sliding rear bench with 16cm travel; headline boot figures of 616 litres petrol and 480 litres hybrid The 616-litre petrol figure is with the bench moved forward. Renault also gives VDA figures of 536dm³ petrol and 440dm³ hybrid.
Current Hyundai Bayon Stay with Hyundai’s existing compact SUV Black Line £23,795; Tech Line £25,295; 1.0-litre T-GDi 90PS with manual or 7DCT announced in December 2025 The page also shows “From £24,065”; establish which offer and model year a dealer is quoting.

These are manufacturer-published figures, not a ranked independent road test. They identify different reasons to investigate each car rather than proving that one is objectively best.

Ford Puma: the cargo-flexibility alternative

What makes the Puma different

Ford’s principal practical argument is the MegaBox, an 80-litre under-floor compartment. Ford UK quotes a boot capacity of up to 456 litres including that compartment: Ford Puma UK. The space can be useful for tall, wet or dirty items that you would rather keep below the main luggage floor, but its value depends on what you carry. Measure a buggy, case or work equipment against the actual opening and floor shape during a test drive.

The Puma uses a 1.0-litre 48V mild-hybrid petrol system and is offered with a manual or seven-speed automatic transmission on Ford’s UK product information. A 48V mild hybrid recovers and deploys electrical energy to assist the engine; it is not a plug-in hybrid and cannot be charged from a socket. Ask for the precise engine output, gearbox and grade because availability can vary by version.

Who should consider it

  • Drivers who regularly carry awkward items and can use the MegaBox.
  • Buyers who want a small SUV with a conventional petrol engine assisted by mild-hybrid technology.
  • People who prefer to choose between a manual and an automatic without moving to a larger vehicle.

Checks before ordering

  1. Open the boot with the parcel shelf fitted and test your largest regular load.
  2. Lift the main floor and inspect the MegaBox drain, lining and usable shape.
  3. Confirm whether the quoted 456-litre figure and automatic gearbox apply to the exact trim and model year.
  4. Check rear-seat legroom with the driver’s seat set for the person who will drive most often.
  5. Obtain an itemised on-the-road quote, including options, delivery charges and any finance conditions.

Toyota Yaris Cross: the full-hybrid and AWD alternative

Powertrain choice

Toyota’s UK Yaris Cross information lists a full-hybrid petrol system and both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants: Toyota Yaris Cross specifications. A full hybrid can propel the car electrically for short periods and replenishes its battery through the engine and regenerative braking; it is not a plug-in model. AWD may help on low-grip roads or steep driveways, but it adds cost and complexity, so choose it for a genuine use case rather than as a badge.

Toyota’s current product page displays an official fuel-economy range of 55.3–64.1mpg. Those are laboratory WLTP figures for specified versions, not a promise of what every driver will achieve in winter traffic, motorway work or short journeys: Toyota Yaris Cross product page.

Price discrepancy you should resolve

Toyota’s 2026 price list gives the Icon grade an on-the-road price of £27,245: Toyota 2026 price list. The live product page currently displays £27,445 as its base on-the-road figure. Both are official Toyota sources, but they do not match. Treat neither as permanently current without checking the configurator or obtaining a written dealer quotation on the day you buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should consider it

  • Drivers who specifically want a self-charging full hybrid rather than a mild hybrid.
  • Households that need the option of all-wheel drive.
  • Buyers prepared to compare fuel-economy figures on the same WLTP basis and to pay attention to grade pricing.

Checks before ordering

  1. Identify the exact hybrid system, drive layout and transmission included in the quoted grade.
  2. Compare the official WLTP figure for that version, not the range shown for the whole model line.
  3. Resolve the £27,245 versus £27,445 discrepancy with Toyota’s live configurator or a dealer.
  4. Test the rear seat behind your normal driving position and check boot access with the AWD hardware, if applicable.
  5. Ask which safety, parking and driver-assistance features are standard rather than optional.

Renault Captur: the rear-seat-flexibility alternative

Sliding bench and luggage capacity

Renault gives the Captur a rear bench that slides through 16cm. Moving it rearward prioritises passenger legroom; sliding it forward creates more luggage space. That flexibility is more useful than a single maximum-boot number when the car alternates between people and cargo: Renault UK Captur.

  • Brand new box.
  • Authentic detail
  • Real rubber tires. Detailed wheel design
  • Detailed interior, exterior.
  • Detailed under-chassis

Renault’s headline figures need their conditions attached. The petrol Captur is quoted at 616 litres with the rear bench pushed forward, while the hybrid is quoted at 480 litres. The page also provides VDA measurements of 536dm³ for petrol and 440dm³ for hybrid. VDA and headline marketing measurements may use different measurement conventions, so do not compare 616 litres directly with a rival’s figure unless the method and seat position match.

Powertrains and price context

The Captur is available with petrol and full-hybrid powertrains. Select the engine before comparing boot capacity because the hybrid’s published figure is lower. Renault displays a starting price of £22,495 MRRP, excluding metallic paint. Confirm the trim, paint, delivery costs and any campaign terms in the configurator or dealer quote.

Who should consider it

  • Families who frequently switch between rear passengers and bulky shopping.
  • Buyers who want a full hybrid but also want a petrol alternative in the same body style.
  • Drivers for whom a low displayed entry price is useful, provided the required equipment is included in the chosen grade.

Checks before ordering

  1. Measure the boot with the bench in the position you would actually use, then repeat with it fully forward and rearward.
  2. Confirm whether the quoted capacity is the petrol or hybrid version and whether it is a headline or VDA measurement.
  3. Check that child seats fit while preserving usable front-seat travel.
  4. Compare the hybrid’s standard equipment and price with the petrol version rather than assuming the two are equivalent.
  5. Have the dealer put metallic paint, options and all fees on the written quote.

Should you simply buy the current Bayon?

The Bayon remains a rational choice if you value Hyundai’s current UK availability, have found a suitable Black Line or Tech Line specification, and do not need the particular strengths of the alternatives. The published 1.0-litre T-GDi 90PS engine can be paired with a manual or 7DCT, according to Hyundai’s December 2025 release. Compare the actual equipment list, warranty terms, delivery date and dealer price against the Puma, Yaris Cross and Captur rather than relying on the trim name alone.

Price context matters. Hyundai lists Black Line at £23,795 and Tech Line at £25,295, while its live page separately shows “From £24,065.” Ask the retailer to identify the model year, trim, registration status and offer behind every figure. A pre-registered or promotional car may not be directly comparable with a factory-order price.

What is known about the all-new Bayon?

Hyundai describes the all-new Bayon as “a compact SUV built to take on today,” which is Hyundai’s own marketing statement rather than an independent assessment: Hyundai all-new Bayon. The company says a hybrid powertrain is planned after initial combustion-engine versions. Until final homologation, there is no confirmed UK specification on which to base a reliable comparison of dimensions, boot volume, fuel economy, safety equipment or price.

If you can wait, register interest and ask the dealer for the final specification and delivery timing. Do not pay a deposit on the assumption that a projected capacity, trim or price will carry over from the current car. If you need a car now, compare the confirmed current Bayon and rival specifications instead.

How to compare these small SUVs properly

1. Match the powertrain and gearbox

Compare petrol with petrol, mild hybrid with mild hybrid and full hybrid with full hybrid before drawing conclusions about economy or price. Record whether each car is manual, conventional automatic or dual-clutch. The Puma’s 48V system is not equivalent to the Yaris Cross or Captur full hybrids, and a full hybrid is not a plug-in hybrid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Use a consistent price basis

Request an on-the-road quote for the same purchase method, model year and equipment level. Include metallic paint, delivery, registration, options and any conditional finance discount. Toyota’s two published Yaris Cross figures and Hyundai’s two displayed Bayon starting figures show why a headline number can be misleading.

3. Check dimensions and parking in person

Look up the exact version’s length, width including mirrors, turning circle and camera or sensor equipment. Then drive the route you use most: a narrow street, a multi-storey car park or a tight driveway. A theoretical size advantage is less useful than being able to place the car confidently.

4. Test real luggage and rear-seat combinations

Bring a child seat, folded pushchair, suitcase or work case to the test drive. For the Puma, test the MegaBox; for the Captur, move the bench through its 16cm range; for the Yaris Cross and Bayon, verify the actual boot opening and rear-seat access of the selected trim. Published litres do not show whether your particular load fits.

5. Audit standard equipment and safety

Make a side-by-side list of adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, a reversing camera, navigation, smartphone integration, heated seats and LED lighting. A lower-priced car can cease to be cheaper once the equipment you consider essential is added.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Confirm availability and the handover date

Ask whether the car is factory order, in dealer stock or pre-registered, and establish the registration year. Features, prices and offers can change between an online search and handover. Get the specification and final amount in writing.

Lowest confirmed Hyundai route Current Bayon Hyundai publishes named Black Line and Tech Line prices and a 90PS engine announcement. The live “From £24,065” display and changing offers require a dealer check.
Waiting for a newer Hyundai All-new Bayon A successor is announced and a hybrid is planned. Final homologated specifications and prices are not yet available.

Evidence limits worth keeping in mind

The figures above come from manufacturer product pages, releases and price documents. They are useful for establishing published equipment, capacities and prices, but they are not independent comparative test results. There is no established, like-for-like evidence here to rank these cars for reliability, owner satisfaction, resale value, insurance or whole-life cost. Treat those as separate questions and obtain insurance and finance quotations for your circumstances.

Fuel-economy numbers are also version-specific laboratory results. Traffic, temperature, speed, tyre pressures, payload and driving style can move real consumption well outside a displayed WLTP range. Use the official figures to compare equivalent versions, not to guarantee a personal mpg result.

A practical buying sequence

  1. Write down your non-negotiables: automatic or manual, full hybrid or petrol, rear-seat space, boot use, parking aids and budget.
  2. Build a shortlist of the current Bayon, Puma, Yaris Cross and Captur using the exact grades that meet those requirements.
  3. Check each manufacturer’s configurator for current on-the-road price and stock; note any discrepancy rather than averaging or guessing.
  4. Book back-to-back test drives and bring the people, child seats and luggage that represent normal use.
  5. Record the measured boot arrangement, driving position, visibility, ride comfort, controls and noise while the impressions are fresh.
  6. Ask each dealer for a written quote with model year, registration status, options, paint, fees, warranty and delivery date.
  7. Choose the car whose confirmed specification solves your use case, not the one with the largest isolated litre figure or lowest unqualified headline price.

Bottom line: choose the strength you will use

Start with the Ford Puma if its MegaBox solves a real loading problem. Start with the Toyota Yaris Cross if a full hybrid or optional AWD is central to your decision, while resolving Toyota’s conflicting official base prices. Start with the Renault Captur if a sliding rear bench will regularly change how you carry people and luggage, and compare petrol and hybrid capacities on the correct measurement basis. Choose the current Bayon when its confirmed Hyundai specification and dealer quote fit better than those alternatives. Consider the all-new Bayon only as a future option until Hyundai publishes final homologated data.
