The Dacia Spring Electric 70 is the lowest-cost alternative in the European listings, while the Hyundai Inster Standard Range offers the strongest range-per-euro step up. The Citroën ë-C3 Urban Range and Renault Twingo E-Tech stay close to the Spring on price and are aimed at city driving. The Renault 5 E-Tech costs more but adds a larger battery and a more substantial compact-car package. Your best choice depends on local transaction price, the exact battery trim, daily kilometres and whether you regularly leave town.
This is a Europe-focused comparison. Prices and equipment vary by country, incentives and stock, so treat the figures below as approximate market references rather than dealer quotes.

What the BYD Dolphin Surf sets as the benchmark
BYD Europe lists the DOLPHIN SURF at 3,990 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,590 mm high (BYD Europe, 2025). Those dimensions put it firmly in the small-car class, with an exterior footprint suited to narrow streets and tight parking. BYD’s launch material characterises its cabin and boot as comparable with cars from the class above; that is a manufacturer description, not an independently standardised measurement.
The European Commission’s European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) shows three approximate market entries:

| BYD Dolphin Surf version | Battery | Listed range | Approximate European listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active | 30 kWh | 190 km | €23,000 |
| Boost | 43.2 kWh | 270 km | €26,000 |
| Comfort | 43.2 kWh | 265 km | €28,800 |
These are EAFO table values accessed in 2026, not guaranteed transaction prices, and they should not be read as a single official country price. The range entries are not presented here as a like-for-like independent road test or as a promise of real-world distance. Weather, speed, heating, wheel choice, payload and traffic can all change usable range.
Quick comparison of the main alternatives
| Model and version | Battery | Listed range | Approximate EAFO listing | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Spring Electric 70 | 24.0 kWh | 165 km | €18,400 | Lowest-cost urban use |
| Citroën ë-C3 Urban Range | 29.8 kWh | 175 km | €20,500 | Affordable city driving with a conventional supermini format |
| Renault Twingo E-Tech | 27.5 kWh | 185 km | €20,500 | Compact city-car duties |
| Hyundai Inster Standard Range | 39.0 kWh | 255 km | €24,600 | More range without moving to the highest prices |
| Renault 5 E-Tech 40 kWh, 120 hp | 40.0 kWh | 265 km | €26,900 | A higher-spec small EV for mixed urban and regional use |
The comparison uses the same EAFO market context for each entry. It is not a country-specific quote, and model availability can change. Before paying a deposit, match the battery, power output and equipment level on the written offer to the exact row you are comparing.
1. Dacia Spring Electric 70: the price-first choice
The Spring Electric 70 is listed with a 24.0 kWh battery, 165 km of range and an approximate €18,400 price in the EAFO table. That makes it the clear entry-price alternative to the Surf’s approximately €23,000 Active listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy it makes sense
- The lowest listed purchase figure in this shortlist leaves more budget for financing costs, winter tyres or home-charging work.
- A 165 km listed range can cover commuting, school runs and errands when the car can be charged regularly at home or work.
- Its small footprint is useful in dense urban areas where parking space matters more than motorway refinement.
Where the compromise appears
The smaller battery leaves less margin for cold weather, high speeds, detours and infrequent charging. A buyer who routinely drives between cities should calculate the longest normal day, add a reserve for conditions, and check public-charger locations rather than selecting the Spring solely on price. The EAFO figure does not establish how much range remains in a particular winter or motorway scenario.
2. Citroën ë-C3 Urban Range: similarly priced, with an important trim decision
The ë-C3 Urban Range entry is listed at 29.8 kWh, 175 km and approximately €20,500. That places it about €2,100 above the Spring reference and approximately €2,500 below the Surf Active reference.

Urban Range or Standard Range?
Citroën’s name covers materially different battery choices in the EAFO table. The longer-range ë-C3 Standard Range is listed with 43.8 kWh, 255 km and approximately €24,100. Choosing between the 29.8 kWh Urban Range and 43.8 kWh Standard Range changes both the purchase price and the trips the car can handle comfortably.
| ë-C3 entry | Battery | Listed range | Approximate EAFO listing | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urban Range | 29.8 kWh | 175 km | €20,500 | Keep the budget close to the Twingo and prioritise city use |
| Standard Range | 43.8 kWh | 255 km | €24,100 | Pay more for substantially greater listed range |
Do not compare a dealer’s base ë-C3 price with a Surf or Inster that has a larger battery. Ask for the battery capacity, charging equipment and all mandatory fees on the same written quotation.

The Renault Twingo E-Tech is listed at 27.5 kWh, 185 km and approximately €20,500. Its reference price matches the ë-C3 Urban Range and sits below every Surf version in the EAFO entries.
Who should consider it
- Drivers whose journeys are predominantly urban and rarely exceed the listed range in a day.
- Households that value a small turning footprint and easy parking over long-distance flexibility.
- Buyers who want a familiar city-car format without paying for a 40 kWh-class battery.
Questions to settle with the dealer
Current EAFO entries do not provide charging curves, connector details or time from a defined state of charge for the Twingo. Confirm the exact country specification, onboard charging capability and any optional cable before assuming it will suit a particular home or public-charging routine. A nominally similar battery can deliver a different ownership experience if charging hardware or standard equipment differs.
4. Hyundai Inster Standard Range: the range-focused middle ground
The Inster Standard Range is listed with a 39.0 kWh battery, 255 km of range and approximately €24,600. It costs more than the Spring, Urban Range ë-C3 and Twingo references, but its listed battery is materially larger and its listed range is 70–90 km higher than those three smaller-battery alternatives.

Why the extra spend can be rational
- More energy capacity provides a larger buffer for heating, rain, cold temperatures and unplanned detours.
- A 255 km listed figure is closer to the Surf Boost and Renault 5 entries than to the 165–185 km city-car group.
- It can reduce the number of public-charging stops for owners who regularly combine city driving with regional roads.
The Inster is not automatically the best value: the EAFO figures do not include your country’s taxes, delivery fees, financing rate, options or incentives. Compare the payable price after mandatory charges, then decide whether the additional range is worth the difference for your actual weekly use.
5. Renault 5 E-Tech 40 kWh, 120 hp: a higher-priced step up
The Renault 5 E-Tech 40 kWh, 120 hp is listed at 40.0 kWh, 265 km and approximately €26,900 in an August 2026 EAFO entry. A separate EAFO entry for an earlier 40 kWh version shows approximately €27,900 and 260 km. Check which version a local dealer is quoting; the two entries demonstrate why model name alone is not enough.
What it offers over the cheaper cars
Its 265 km listed range is 100 km above the Spring reference and 80 km above the Twingo reference. It is also close to the Surf Boost’s 270 km listing while remaining below the Surf Comfort’s approximately €28,800 reference. That makes the Renault 5 relevant to buyers who want more regional flexibility but do not want to move into a larger vehicle.
Why it is not a simple winner
The Renault 5 costs roughly €6,400 more than the Spring reference and about €2,300 more than the Inster reference. Whether the difference is justified depends on standard equipment, local incentives, financing and how often you use the additional range. Confirm the 40 kWh battery, 120 hp output and model year on the order form, especially when comparing the August 2026 listing with the earlier EAFO entry.
Which alternative is best for your driving pattern?
Choose the Spring Electric 70 when price is the overriding constraint
It is the logical shortlist leader if most trips are short, charging is convenient and the €18,400 reference is close to the best local payable offer. Accept that its 165 km listing leaves the smallest buffer for unusual days.

Choose the ë-C3 Urban Range or Twingo E-Tech for an affordable city EV
Both are listed at approximately €20,500. The ë-C3 offers 175 km in the Urban Range entry, while the Twingo is listed at 185 km. The better choice will often be determined by seating, boot access, standard safety equipment, charging hardware and the dealer’s actual quote rather than by the 10 km difference in the table.
Choose the Inster Standard Range for a balanced range upgrade
Its 39.0 kWh battery and 255 km listing make it the clearest middle-ground alternative when the Spring, ë-C3 Urban Range or Twingo feels too limited but the Renault 5 or Surf Comfort exceeds your budget.
Choose the Renault 5 E-Tech when you want the most capable small-car step-up in this list
The 40.0 kWh, 265 km entry is suited to buyers willing to pay more for a larger battery and occasional longer trips. Verify the exact version and local price because EAFO contains more than one 40 kWh listing.
How to compare prices without being misled
- Request an itemised, local quotation. Ask for vehicle price, delivery, registration, documentation, mandatory equipment and taxes separately.
- Identify the incentive treatment. State whether a subsidy is deducted immediately, advanced by the seller, paid later or conditional on approval.
- Check eligibility and funding. BYD Spain’s offer page, for example, describes a subsidy advance conditional on legal approval and available funds. That illustrates why an advertised headline may not be the amount every buyer pays.
- Match the trim. Record battery size, motor output, wheels and included charging cables. Do not compare a base-price Urban Range with a larger-battery Standard Range or a better-equipped Surf.
- Compare total ownership assumptions. Include insurance, servicing, tyres, home-charging installation and public-charging use. A lower purchase price can be less attractive if your routine requires frequent paid rapid charging.
Range, charging and trip planning
The EAFO entries provide a consistent starting point for battery and listed range, but they do not provide charging curves, connector details or comparable charging time from a specified state of charge. Confirm those items for the exact country and trim with the manufacturer before making a road-trip decision.

- Write down your longest normal day, not your average commute.
- Add a reserve for weather, traffic, heating or air conditioning and a detour.
- Check whether charging is available at home, work or a reliable public location during that day.
- Repeat the calculation for winter conditions if you live in a cold climate.
- Only then decide whether a 165–185 km listed car is sufficient or whether the 255–270 km group is worth the extra cost.
Listed range is a comparison aid, not a guaranteed distance. No directly comparable real-world test across these models is published in the cited EAFO entries, so avoid treating the table as a laboratory ranking.

Space, equipment and everyday usability
The Surf’s 3,990 mm × 1,720 mm × 1,590 mm dimensions provide a useful physical reference, but consistent boot-volume and rear-seat measurements are not published for every rival in the cited specifications. Do not assume that the car with the largest battery has the most usable cabin.
Inspect these items in person
- Rear-seat legroom with the front seats set for the adults who will drive.
- Boot opening height, loading lip and space with the rear seats in use.
- Child-seat access and the number and location of ISOFIX points.
- Visibility, turning circle and door clearance in your usual parking spaces.
- Standard driver-assistance, heating and climate-control equipment on the exact trim.
- Included charging cables and the car’s maximum AC and DC charging specifications.
Because manufacturer specifications are not uniform, verify these measurements and features from the manufacturer’s local specification sheet or a physical inspection before declaring one model the space or equipment winner.
Market and policy checks for European buyers
This shortlist is European rather than global. The same model can have a different battery, safety equipment, warranty, price or availability in another market. EAFO values are approximate listings and may change as new versions arrive.
Refresh the following shortly before ordering:
- Local stock and delivery timing for the precise battery trim.
- VAT, registration, delivery and documentation charges.
- Purchase grants, tax credits and scrappage rules, including income or vehicle-eligibility conditions.
- Whether a dealer has already deducted an incentive or expects reimbursement later.
- Home-charger regulations, installation cost and the electricity tariff available to you.
- Public-charging access on the routes you actually drive.
The policy backdrop is helping expand choice. In a November 2025 briefing, Transport & Environment said: “The ZEV mandate has so far been very successful, encouraging carmakers to invest and innovate to bring an ever-wider range of BEV models to market, at increasingly competitive prices.” That broad trend does not guarantee that a particular model or incentive will be available in your country when you buy.
A simple decision framework
| Your priority | Start with | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest possible purchase price | Dacia Spring Electric 70 | Whether 165 km listed range covers your longest day and whether charging is always available |
| Affordable city car with a little more range | Renault Twingo E-Tech or ë-C3 Urban Range | Rear-seat practicality, charging equipment and local trim specification |
| More range at a moderate price step | Hyundai Inster Standard Range | Final payable price after fees and incentives |
| Small EV for frequent regional trips | Renault 5 E-Tech 40 kWh or Surf Boost | Exact battery version, charging capability and motorway-use expectations |
| Maximum listed range in this shortlist | Renault 5 E-Tech 40 kWh, 120 hp or Surf Boost | Whether the extra cost over the Inster is justified for your annual mileage |
Buying checklist
- Write the exact model, battery, motor and trim on every quotation.
- Record the listed range and remember that it is not a guaranteed real-world figure.
- Ask for the total payable price with every mandatory fee included.
- Get incentive eligibility and payment timing in writing.
- Confirm AC and DC charging specifications, connector type and included cables for your market.
- Test the rear seats, boot and child-seat fit with your own family equipment.
- Price home charging and estimate public-charging use before selecting a smaller battery.
- Check warranty, service intervals, roadside assistance and delivery date on the contract.
Bottom line
For the lowest-cost urban EV, the Dacia Spring Electric 70 is the standout alternative at approximately €18,400 in the EAFO listing, provided its 165 km listed range fits your routine. The ë-C3 Urban Range and Twingo E-Tech keep the reference price near €20,500, with the ë-C3 also available in a much longer-range 43.8 kWh version. The Hyundai Inster Standard Range is the most persuasive middle ground at 39.0 kWh, 255 km and approximately €24,600. The Renault 5 E-Tech 40 kWh, 120 hp is the higher-priced choice for buyers who want a 265 km listing and are prepared to spend around €26,900. Compare local, incentive-adjusted prices and exact trims before treating any of these figures as a buying recommendation.
