The Honda and Renault prices are not directly interchangeable: Honda’s figure is a starting price for Great Britain, while Renault explicitly says its lower Renault 5 figure includes the grant. The Abarth figures come from two separate 2026 announcements, and the BYD material supplied here gives ranges but no UK prices.

A useful alternative to the Abarth 500e or Honda Super-N needs to remain a genuinely small electric car, not merely be cheaper than a larger family EV. That means considering the way the car is positioned, the battery and range attached to the exact trim, and the kind of driving it can support.

The information published by the manufacturers for these four models is not a common independent test. There is no verified segment-wide statistic or back-to-back real-world range test covering all four. WLTP values therefore help you compare versions within the manufacturers’ published framework, but they cannot establish which car will travel furthest on a cold motorway trip. Weather, speed, driving style, passenger and luggage load, tyres, and accessories can all move real consumption away from the laboratory result.
For that reason, treat the Renault 5 and Dolphin Surf as candidates to investigate. A test drive, an insurance quotation, a home-charging assessment, and a check of the current configurator are still needed before ordering.
Renault 5 E-Tech electric: the two-use-case alternative
40 kWh urban-range version
Renault UK positions the 40 kWh car as an urban-range version. Its listed range figure and grant-inclusive starting price put it between the two named reference cars on the figures supplied, but the more important distinction is its intended duty cycle: regular commuting, shopping, school runs, and other trips where a compact footprint matters more than maximum touring range.
The useful question is not whether the headline range is sufficient in isolation. Ask how many miles you normally cover between opportunities to charge, whether you can charge at home, and how often the car will be used outside town. If most weeks involve predictable local trips and an occasional longer journey that can be planned around public charging, this version may provide the most proportionate specification. If you routinely drive long distances without reliable charging stops, examine the larger-battery configuration instead of assuming the urban model will behave like a long-distance car.
52 kWh comfort-range version
The 52 kWh Renault 5 is presented as the comfort-range option. Renault lists a higher starting price and a substantially higher maximum range figure, but labels the quoted 52 kWh figures as pending homologation. That qualification matters: the specification is not yet the same kind of settled number as a final, approved rating.

This version is the more logical Renault 5 to investigate when your small electric car must cover mixed use: local driving during the week, regional journeys at weekends, and occasional motorway work. The larger battery may reduce the number of charging stops in those situations, yet it does not remove the effects of speed, temperature, traffic, or payload. Confirm the final homologated figure, equipment level, delivery timing, and grant treatment with Renault before treating the published configuration as a firm contract specification.
Why the Renault 5 is a strong first comparison
Renault supplies two clearly differentiated battery-and-purpose choices rather than one undifferentiated range claim. That makes it easier to match the car to your routine. It also gives buyers a transparent decision: spend less for an urban-focused setup, or pay more for the comfort-range specification and accept that some figures remain subject to homologation.
Do not infer performance, charging speed, boot volume, or standard equipment from the battery size alone. Those details are not established in the published material, so check the current Renault UK configurator and the exact trim sheet. A larger battery can improve trip flexibility, but it can also change price, weight, insurance grouping, and delivery availability.
BYD Dolphin Surf: compare the trim, not a single headline number
Active: the shortest quoted range
The Active trim has the lowest WLTP combined range in BYD UK’s June 2025 specification sheet. It may suit a buyer whose driving is overwhelmingly local and whose priority is keeping the chosen car simple, but the sheet provided does not include a UK price or battery capacity. You therefore cannot calculate value per mile or compare purchase cost with the Renault versions from the figures published here.
Boost: the highest quoted range in the sheet
Boost carries the highest of the three Dolphin Surf WLTP combined figures in the June 2025 specification sheet. That makes it the trim to examine first if you want the Dolphin Surf shape but expect more varied driving. The higher published range does not automatically make it the best buy: check what equipment, wheels, tyres, and charging hardware are included, because version changes can affect both efficiency and the final on-road price.

Comfort: a different figure from Boost
Comfort’s official range is lower than Boost’s in the same BYD table. This is a useful warning against quoting one generic “Dolphin Surf range” number. When comparing dealer listings, write down the exact trim and model year, then match it to the specification sheet. If a listing omits the trim, ask the seller to confirm it in writing before relying on the range claim.
What the Dolphin Surf information does and does not tell you
BYD describes the Dolphin Surf as a compact electric city car, which aligns it with the small-car role served by the Honda reference point. The available sheet establishes trim-specific WLTP ranges, but not UK prices, battery capacities, charging times, dimensions, or equipment levels. Those omissions prevent a complete cost-per-mile or specification ranking. Use the range table as a shortlisting tool, then obtain the current UK price list and trim equipment before making a financial comparison.
The two reference cars: Honda Super-N and Abarth 500e
Honda Super-N as the city-focused baseline
Honda UK describes the Super-N as a compact electric hatchback and lists a 29.6 kWh battery. Honda’s overview gives a Great Britain starting price of £18,995, a figure that should be rechecked because prices and configurations can change. In a statement attributed by Honda News Europe to Michael Doyle, Head of Automobile, Honda UK, Doyle said: “Priced at just £18,995, the Super-N delivers Honda’s ‘Joy of Driving’ philosophy to more customers than ever before.”
That description makes the Super-N the clearest city-use baseline in this comparison. It is the car to use when deciding whether an alternative remains compact enough for your streets, parking spaces, and routine errands. Honda’s published material does not provide a range figure for a like-for-like table, so do not assume its battery size translates directly into a particular number of miles.
Abarth 500e as the character-led baseline
The Abarth 500e is the other reference point: a small electric car considered partly for its character and sporty positioning, not only for its transport efficiency. Stellantis announced a UK range starting at £27,995 in January 2026. A separate Abarth announcement on 21 July 2026 said the model qualified for the UK Government Electric Car Grant worth £3,750.

Because those statements have different dates and bases, subtracting the grant from the announced starting price would create an unsupported “final” price. Ask the retailer which version qualifies, whether the grant is already reflected in the displayed figure, and what on-the-road charges remain. Those announcements also do not establish a battery or range number for the Abarth, so the alternatives cannot be ranked against it on those measures.
How to interpret prices, grants and monthly budgets
Start with the price basis, not the number itself. “From” pricing identifies the least expensive eligible configuration, not the car most buyers will necessarily order. A grant-inclusive figure is also different from a list price before incentives. Record each quote with four labels: country or region, date, trim, and whether the grant is already deducted.
- Save the current configurator page or dealer quotation. Note the date and the exact battery and trim.
- Separate purchase price from incentives. Write “including grant,” “grant applied at checkout,” or “grant eligibility to be confirmed,” rather than combining announcements yourself.
- Add on-the-road costs. Include registration, delivery, optional paint, finance interest, insurance, and any home-charging work quoted for your property.
- Compare the total you can actually pay. A lower monthly payment can result from a larger deposit, a longer term, or a final balloon payment; it is not evidence that one car is cheaper overall.
- Recheck before signing. The Honda price, Renault grant treatment, Abarth grant basis, and available BYD trims may change between the date of a quote and order.
Choosing by journey pattern
Mostly short urban trips
Prioritise manoeuvrability, predictable home charging, visibility, insurance cost, and the lowest specification that covers your routine. The Honda Super-N description and the Renault 5 urban-range positioning are the clearest evidence-led starting points for this use. The Dolphin Surf Active can also be investigated, but obtain its current UK price and equipment list first.
Mixed commuting and regional travel
Look at the Renault 5 comfort-range configuration and the Dolphin Surf Boost or Comfort trims, matching each claim to its exact version. The published numbers suggest these are the variants to examine when local driving is combined with longer journeys, but only a route-based test and a charging plan can show whether they fit your real week.

Occasional motorway journeys
Do not choose on WLTP miles alone. Ask for the final battery specification, charging curve information, motorway efficiency evidence, and roadside recovery terms for the exact car. At sustained motorway speed, energy use is usually more demanding than the mixed laboratory cycle; no manufacturer figure in the published information quantifies the difference for these models, so avoid promising a particular motorway range.

Buying for driving character
If the reason you considered the Abarth 500e is its personality, assess steering, seat support, pedal calibration, ride comfort, and available driving modes in person. Abarth is identified here as a character-led reference, but the published information does not provide independent handling tests for a fair ranking against Renault or BYD. A test drive is more informative than inferring “sporty” behaviour from styling or a badge.
Questions to take to a dealer
- Which exact trim and model year is this quotation for?
- Is the advertised price before or after the Electric Car Grant, and who applies the grant?
- What battery capacity and certified WLTP range appear on the order paperwork?
- For the Renault 5 52 kWh version, has the quoted range completed homologation?
- For the Dolphin Surf, is the car Active, Boost, or Comfort, and does the specification sheet match that trim?
- Which wheels and tyres are fitted, and can an alternative set change efficiency or price?
- What standard charging equipment is included, and what installation work would be extra?
- What is the total on-the-road price, including delivery, registration, options, and finance charges?
- What happens if the quoted grant, trim, or homologated specification changes before delivery?
Pitfalls that can produce a misleading comparison
Mixing trims
Combining the Dolphin Surf Boost range with a Comfort price, or quoting the Active figure as though it applies to every Surf, creates a false comparison. Keep a separate row for every trim.
Treating WLTP as a promise
WLTP is designed for comparability. Renault explicitly notes that weather, driving style, load, and accessories can alter real-world results. Apply the same caution to the BYD figures and do not turn a laboratory maximum into a guaranteed journey distance.

The Renault 5 comfort-range figures are marked pending homologation. The BYD range sheet is dated June 2025, while the Honda and Abarth price statements are dated or referenced to 2026. A current dealer quote can supersede an older web page.
Calculating an Abarth net price yourself
The January 2026 starting-price announcement and the July 2026 grant-eligibility announcement are separate. Only the retailer or current official price list can confirm how the grant appears on the exact vehicle you can order.
Which alternative should you investigate first?
Choose the Renault 5 first if you want a clearly defined choice between an urban-focused battery and a longer-range configuration, and you are comfortable checking the homologation status of the latter. Choose the BYD Dolphin Surf first if you want to compare several compact-city-car trims and are prepared to obtain missing UK price and equipment details from the current specification. Keep the Honda Super-N as the city-size and entry-price reference, and keep the Abarth 500e as the character-focused reference whose grant and price must be verified separately.
None of these sources justifies declaring one model the universal best small electric car. The practical winner depends on your annual mileage, charging access, longest regular journey, tolerance for planning stops, insurance quote, and the exact deal available when you order. Build the comparison from current, trim-specific paperwork rather than a single headline range or a price copied from a different grant basis.
