For most buyers, the BMW E3 is the closest direct alternative to a Mercedes-Benz 300SEL. It delivers a spacious, formal German sedan with a smooth straight-six and a more conventional chassis. Choose a Jaguar XJ6 Series 1 if traditional wood, leather and a softer British character matter more than German engineering discipline. The 300SEL belongs to Mercedes-Benz’s W108/W109 luxury range, produced from 1965 through 1972. The W109 used a wheelbase 10 centimetres longer than the W108, plus pneumatic suspension, richer trim and additional chrome. Engine choice changed the character substantially. The family included inline-six engines and 3.5-, 4.5- and 6.3-litre V8s. - Ride: W109 pneumatic suspension isolates occupants exceptionally well but requires specialist diagnosis when leaks or compressor problems appear.
- Powertrain range: Buyers can choose quiet six-cylinder cruising or V8 torque, with the 6.3 occupying a performance-sedan category of its own.

BMW E3: the closest German substitute

The BMW E3 was developed as a direct rival to the W108/W109. Its body is stylish, airy and spacious, and its straight-six engines provide the smooth, mechanical character expected of a period German executive sedan. The 2.5-, 2.8-, 3.0- and 3.3-litre range lets you choose between easier cruising and stronger performance without moving to a large V8.
Compared with a 300SEL, the E3 feels less ceremonial and more driver-oriented. The seating position, visibility and engine response suit an owner who wants to use the car on winding roads as well as motorways. It preserves the sense of solidity and occasion without copying Mercedes styling or suspension design.
What to inspect before buying
Rust is the E3’s major known problem in the Classic & Sports Car guide. Do not limit inspection to visible bubbling. A sound-looking car can have corrosion in structural metal, door and window areas or suspension mounting points.

The W108/W109 family covered inline-six engines and 3.5- and 4.5-litre V8s, so a W108 can still provide substantial torque and effortless long-distance performance. It will not duplicate the 300SEL 6.3’s 300-hp specification or its air-suspended ride, but it offers a more approachable ownership proposition for many drivers.
Checks that matter on a W108
- Inspect front and rear subframes, floors, sills, inner wings and jacking points for corrosion or amateur repairs.
- Confirm suspension bushes, ball joints, steering components and brake hydraulics have been renewed where necessary.
- On fuel-injected cars, request records for injection diagnosis and calibration. Hard starting, hunting idle or poor hot restarting should be investigated rather than accepted as normal.
- Check that bumpers, grille, lights, wood, instruments and seat trim are complete. Sourcing missing trim can be harder than repairing a running engine.
- Compare cold-start behavior, oil pressure, temperature stability and transmission operation with the seller’s claims.
The specification-versus-condition rule
The Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s practical advice is to buy the most complete, unspoiled car you can afford and compromise on specification rather than begin an open-ended restoration. A less glamorous engine in a solid, documented W108 is usually a better starting point than a rare version with structural corrosion and missing interior parts.

The W116 450SEL 6.9 followed the W108/W109 era and combines a 6.9-litre V8 with hydropneumatic level-control suspension. Its newer design also brings the safety-engineering progress associated with the W116 generation.
The suspension is not a simple alternative to the W109 system; it is a different complex system. Hydraulic pumps, accumulators, lines, control components and struts all age, and a car that sits unevenly or loses ride height needs specialist diagnosis. Budget for inspection and maintenance before treating the 6.9 as an inexpensive upgrade.
Buying checks
- Measure ride height after the car has been parked and again after a drive; unexplained sag or slow settling warrants investigation.
- Inspect hydraulic lines, fluid reservoirs, accumulators and struts for leaks or evidence of improvised repairs.
- Confirm the 6.9-litre V8 starts cleanly, holds temperature and delivers smooth automatic-transmission shifts.
- Check body corrosion, floor structure, subframes and door or window areas just as carefully as on earlier Mercedes models.
- Require records for hydraulic-system servicing, not merely engine oil changes.
Who should choose it

For maximum V8 performance and later engineering: 450SEL 6.9
The 6.9 offers the most substantial power and a later platform, but its hydraulic level-control system means that “newer” does not mean “simple.” Buy only after a specialist inspection confirms the suspension and body are healthy.
Inspection procedure for any candidate
- Verify identity and history. Match the vehicle identification number to the title and body plate, then assemble invoices, ownership records and restoration photographs. Treat undocumented claims of engine swaps or suspension conversions as unverified.
- Inspect the shell before the drivetrain. Use a lift, a bright light and a magnet where appropriate. Check structural rails, floors, sills, wheel arches, window surrounds, subframes and suspension mounts. Obtain an independent assessment of any fresh underseal or paint.
- Test the suspension cold and hot. A W109 should maintain its designed ride height; a W108 should not knock, wander or float from worn components; a 450SEL 6.9 should respond correctly to its hydraulic level control. Record symptoms rather than relying on a short seller-led drive.
- Drive every operating condition. Start from cold, idle in traffic, accelerate through the gears, cruise at speed and brake firmly in a safe location. Note temperature stability, oil pressure, steering play, gearbox behavior, vibration and brake pull.
- Test the cabin systems. Operate gauges, warning lights, heater, ventilation, windows, locks, lamps, wipers and radio. Missing switches or trim can signal a long-abandoned restoration.

Before committing, check local listings and speak with marque specialists about labor rates, shipping and parts availability. A car that is inexpensive to buy but lacks trim, body panels or suspension components can exceed the cost of a better example quickly. Conversely, a complete driver with honest cosmetics may be usable while you improve it gradually.
For every model, reserve money for rubber seals, hoses, brake hydraulics, cooling-system components, electrical repairs and tires simply because these parts age even on a low-mileage car. Pneumatic W109 and hydropneumatic 6.9 systems add specialist work; E3 rust adds body-shop risk; XJ6 electrical and cooling faults can consume diagnostic time; W108 coil springs reduce one category of complexity but do not eliminate corrosion or fuel-system maintenance.
Final buying recommendation
