In U.S. production, six-cylinder engines gained ground as the market moved away from V8s, became the leading cylinder-count category in 1992, and later ceded share to four-cylinders. Today, turbocharged four-cylinder engines and electrified powertrains offer alternatives that can deliver power without a conventional V6. EPA data tracks cylinder count rather than engine layout, however, so it cannot tell us the V6’s exact market share.
Why the V6 became a mass-market engine
A V6 places six cylinders in two banks arranged in a V. Historically, it offered automakers and buyers a middle ground: more power and smoother operation than many four-cylinder engines, without the size and fuel use associated with a large V8. That compromise is a useful way to understand the V6’s appeal, but it is an interpretation of the broader history—not a buyer-motivation finding measured in the EPA data.
The market conditions that made the compromise attractive shifted over time. U.S. production was dominated by eight-cylinder engines in the mid-to-late 1970s. Then, between model years 1979 and 1980, the eight-cylinder share fell from 52% to 23% as production moved toward smaller four- and six-cylinder engines. Those EPA figures document cylinder counts, not V6 layouts, so they show the environment in which V6s could expand rather than the V6’s own share. (EPA, 2025 Automotive Trends Report)
When six-cylinder engines led—and when they lost the lead
The shift did not proceed in one direction. From MY1987 through MY2004, U.S. production moved back toward six- and eight-cylinder engines. The EPA’s historical series identifies MY1992 as the year six-cylinder engines became the most popular U.S. gasoline engine option. Four-cylinder engines regained the lead in MY2009. These are cylinder-count milestones; neither establishes that V6s alone led the market. (EPA, 2020 Automotive Trends Report)

From 2005, production began trending toward four-cylinder engines again. In MY2024, four-cylinder gasoline engines accounted for 60% of the U.S. gasoline engine market by production share. The long arc is therefore a cycle: an era of V8 dominance, a move toward smaller engines, a period when six-cylinder choices grew prominent, and a renewed shift toward four-cylinders. Why turbocharged four-cylinders are taking the V6’s place in many vehicles
A modern four-cylinder does not have to be naturally aspirated. Turbocharging lets a smaller engine produce more power when needed, while its smaller displacement can support better fuel economy during ordinary operation. The EPA describes this approach as combining the improved fuel economy of a smaller engine in normal use with larger-engine power when the turbocharger is engaged. It is a strategy for balancing efficiency and performance, not a guarantee that every turbo four-cylinder will outperform or use less fuel than every V6. (EPA, 2025 Automotive Trends Report)

In MY2024, gasoline turbocharged engines—including those in hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles—made up more than 44% of all U.S. vehicle production; most of those turbocharged gasoline engines were four-cylinder. This figure covers all vehicle production, not just conventional gasoline-only models, and it does not mean that more than 44% were turbo four-cylinders specifically. Electrification adds another alternative. A hybrid or plug-in hybrid can still have a combustion engine, but an electric motor contributes to propulsion, changing how much work the engine must do. Battery-electric vehicles remove the combustion engine altogether. These technologies broaden the choices beyond a simple V6-versus-four-cylinder comparison.

The V6’s decline is part of a wider powertrain shift
Global figures show why engine-cylinder trends are only part of the story. The International Energy Agency reports that electric and hybrid cars made up around 30% of global car sales in 2024. It also reports that global pure-internal-combustion car sales in 2024 were 30% below their 2017 peak. These are global sales measures, not U.S. production shares or V6 figures. Hybrids remain distinct from pure-ICE vehicles because they combine electric and combustion components. (IEA, What Next for the Global Car Industry — Executive Summary)
The U.S. Department of Energy likewise describes 2017 as the peak year for global sales of light-duty vehicles powered only by internal combustion engines, at more than 80 million vehicles. Its measure is broader than engine cylinder count and should not be read as a V6 sales statistic. (U.S. Department of Energy, December 9, 2024)

Is a V6 better than a turbo four-cylinder?
There is no universal answer. The right comparison is between specific vehicles, model years, markets, and trims: engine labels alone do not settle performance, economy, comfort, or capability. A hybrid’s electric motor may also contribute power, making its configuration different from a conventional gasoline engine comparison.
- Power and torque: Compare the manufacturer’s rated output for the exact model and trim, including when peak torque arrives.
- Fuel economy: Compare official ratings for the same market and model year; driving conditions and vehicle weight affect real-world results.
- Towing and payload: Use the vehicle’s published ratings, not the number of cylinders, to determine capability.
- Response and refinement: Consider low-speed response, turbo behavior, engine noise, and vibration in the specific vehicle.
- Packaging and ownership: Compare cargo space, maintenance requirements, and whether a hybrid motor or battery changes the system.
A turbocharged four-cylinder can replace a V6’s role in many mainstream applications, but the evidence supports a changing market mix—not the disappearance of every V6. EPA cylinder-count data also combines V6 and inline-six engines, so it cannot establish a current V6-only production share.
