The best 8-seat SUV for 2026 depends first on whether the exact trim has a second-row bench: several three-row models offer eight seats only in that configuration, while captain’s chairs reduce capacity to seven. For maximum passenger room and towing, start with the Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, or GMC Yukon. For midsize options, compare the Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Grand Highlander, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Volkswagen Atlas, and Chevrolet Traverse by seating layout, cargo space with all rows in use, powertrain, and price.
This guide covers U.S. 2026 model-year vehicles. Rankings are editorial judgments, not universal test results, and manufacturer specifications can vary by trim and drivetrain.
Which 8-seat SUVs are worth considering for 2026?
There is no single winner across full-size and midsize SUVs. Car and Driver places full-size Chevrolet models at the top of its eight-seat ranking, while Edmunds’ midsize comparison, published by AP News, favors the Hyundai Palisade in that category. Use the shortlist below to decide which vehicles merit a closer look; then confirm that the particular build really seats eight.
| Vehicle | Best fit to consider | Published figure |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Suburban | Full-size passenger capacity, cargo and towing | Car and Driver lists a $66,495 starting price and 16–17 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| Chevrolet Tahoe | Full-size alternative to the Suburban | Car and Driver lists a $63,495 starting price and 16–17 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| GMC Yukon / Yukon XL | Full-size option in Car and Driver’s top three | Car and Driver lists the Yukon at $72,395 starting and 16–17 mpg combined; the page’s figure is for the Yukon, not necessarily every Yukon XL configuration. |
| Hyundai Palisade Hybrid | Midsize hybrid choice | Car and Driver lists $45,760 and 29–31 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| Hyundai Palisade | Midsize gas choice | Car and Driver lists $41,035 and 20–21 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid | Midsize space with a hybrid powertrain option | Car and Driver lists $47,205 and 27–36 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | Midsize gas alternative | Car and Driver lists $43,855 and 22–24 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| Honda Pilot | Midsize family SUV candidate | Car and Driver lists a $43,990 starting price and 20–22 mpg combined on its ranking page. |
| Volkswagen Atlas | Row-by-row space figures and cargo utility | Volkswagen reports 33.7 inches of third-row legroom and 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway) on its 2026 page. |
| Chevrolet Traverse | Midsize option with a bench-seat configuration | Chevrolet claims up to 98 cu. ft. maximum cargo volume; that is not cargo room behind an occupied third row. |
The Car and Driver prices and mileage figures above are the values currently displayed on its ranking page; they may not describe the same trim, drivetrain, or seating configuration. They are not guaranteed dealer offers. The publisher says its rankings draw on roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. Edmunds’ AP News comparison takes a separate midsize-focused view: it ranks the Palisade first in that group and also discusses the Telluride, Grand Highlander, Explorer, and Atlas.

Best full-size choices for passenger capacity and towing
Chevrolet Suburban
Car and Driver ranks the 2026 Suburban first on its eight-seat list and describes it as suited to towing while carrying as many as nine people and cargo. That combination makes it a natural first stop for buyers who need a large cabin and hauling capability. The ranking page’s starting-price and fuel-economy figures are useful for an initial comparison, but check the exact configuration, window sticker, and EPA label before treating them as a purchase estimate.
Chevrolet Tahoe
The Tahoe ranks second on Car and Driver’s list and offers another full-size route for buyers who do not need to start with the Suburban. Compare the actual passenger and cargo needs of your household rather than assuming that the two models provide identical usable space or equipment in every trim.

- Toy model car:The car is not just a great toy for kids but it can also be part of your car model collection, Get this car model for your kid or as a lovely surprise for his friends.
GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
Car and Driver ranks the Yukon/Yukon XL third. Its displayed starting price and combined mileage figure on the ranking page are for the Yukon listing; verify the particular model, trim, and drivetrain you are considering. A maximum towing figure alone is not enough to establish that a vehicle can tow at that limit while also carrying a full complement of passengers and luggage.
Best midsize candidates to compare
Hyundai Palisade and Palisade Hybrid
The Palisade is the strongest midsize starting point in the cited editorial comparisons: Car and Driver includes both gas and hybrid versions in its eight-seat ranking, and Edmunds’ AP News comparison names it its top midsize pick. Edmunds highlights a quiet cabin and smooth ride. Hyundai says the 2026 Palisade is available in eight- and seven-passenger configurations, so do not assume a listing with the right model name has a bench or seats eight.

Toyota Grand Highlander and Grand Highlander Hybrid
Car and Driver includes gas and hybrid Grand Highlander versions in its ranking. Edmunds’ comparison calls out the model’s space and hybrid efficiency. Toyota offers gas, hybrid, and Hybrid MAX powertrain families, with available all-wheel drive. Second-row captain’s chairs are available; the bench-seat layout allows up to eight. Toyota’s trim listing shows a bench standard on LE and available on XLE, Limited, Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE, and Hybrid Limited. Confirm the build, since seating can vary by grade.
Toyota’s 2026 Grand Highlander page displays a $42,260 base MSRP and a 21/28 mpg city/highway estimate for the LE. Those trim-specific figures are not interchangeable with the ranking page’s broader displayed figures for the model line.

Honda Pilot
Car and Driver includes the 2026 Pilot in its eight-seat ranking. Its displayed starting price and combined mileage are ranking-page figures rather than a guarantee for every trim. Check whether the specific vehicle has the second-row bench needed for eight passengers and make sure the third row works for the people who will use it.
Kia Telluride
Edmunds’ AP News comparison considers the Telluride alongside the Palisade. It describes the two as related while noting the Telluride’s different styling and equipment. Compare actual trims and seating layouts rather than treating shared lineage as proof that their equipment or passenger configuration is identical.

Volkswagen Atlas
Volkswagen reports 41.7 inches of first-row legroom, 37.6 inches in the second row, and 33.7 inches in the third row for the 2026 Atlas. The figures offer a useful screening comparison, but a legroom measurement cannot predict comfort for every passenger. The company also reports an estimated 20 city/27 highway/23 combined mpg and 5,000 lb braked towing capacity for the model; verify the relevant configuration and equipment.
Volkswagen’s page reports a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick designation and lists individual results: Good ratings for updated side, small-overlap and moderate-overlap frontal crash tests, and headlights; Acceptable for pedestrian front-crash prevention; and Marginal for LATCH ease of use. Check IIHS directly for the vehicle and test information relevant to your comparison.
Chevrolet Traverse
Chevrolet says the 2026 Traverse can seat up to eight with a second-row bench, with captain’s chairs offered as another configuration. Its claimed 98 cu. ft. of maximum cargo volume is a seats-folded maximum—not the amount of luggage room available behind an occupied third row. Chevrolet’s figure is most useful as a broad cargo-capacity reference, not as a substitute for loading your own gear.

Toyota says the 2026 Highlander has three rows and seats up to eight, with gas and hybrid powertrains. Toyota also says its 2.4-liter turbo engine can tow up to 5,000 lb. Confirm that the trim you are shopping has the seating arrangement you need, and check the vehicle’s exact tow equipment and limits rather than relying on the model-wide maximum.
Quick Recap
How to choose the right eight-seat SUV
- Confirm passenger count and seating layout. Check the manufacturer’s page or build sheet for a second-row bench, the third-row seat count, and the exact trim. If you use child seats, try third-row access with those seats installed.
- Test the third row with its real passengers. Use published dimensions, such as Volkswagen’s Atlas legroom figures, as a first screen. Have the people who will ride there sit in the vehicle; a measurement by itself does not establish comfort.
- Measure usable cargo with all seats occupied. Look for cargo volume behind the third row, not only the maximum volume with seats folded. Bring the stroller, bags, mobility equipment, or sports gear you expect to carry.
- Compare powertrains on like-for-like builds. Match trim, drivetrain, seating configuration, and annual mileage when comparing gas and hybrid versions. Distinguish EPA estimates from figures presented on editorial ranking pages; neither is a promise of real-world fuel use.
- Check the complete towing setup. Verify capacity, required equipment, payload, and loaded-vehicle limits for the exact configuration. A maximum tow rating does not establish that maximum towing capacity remains available with a full load of people and cargo.
- Read safety results, not just award labels. Separate a vehicle award from its individual crashworthiness and crash-prevention ratings. Check current IIHS and NHTSA information for the relevant vehicle configuration.
- Compare the real purchase cost. Check current transaction prices, destination charges, drivetrain and seating options, insurance, fuel, and local availability. A ranking page’s displayed starting price is not a local dealer offer.
How to verify an eight-seat build before buying
- Confirm the model year is 2026 and the vehicle is configured for the market where you will buy it.
- Verify the second-row bench rather than captain’s chairs if eight seats are required.
- Check the trim’s third-row seating, powertrain, and drivetrain on the manufacturer’s page or build sheet.
- Ask the dealer to confirm the actual vehicle identification number and window sticker match the seating layout you want.
- Test child-seat installation, third-row access, and cargo space with all passengers aboard.
