The best 2026 Subaru Forester trim depends on what you want to pay for: Base is the lowest-cost starting point, Premium adds everyday comfort and a larger multimedia screen, and Wilderness is the choice for trail-focused hardware. Limited and Touring layer on more convenience and luxury features, while Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring also come as hybrids. Subaru’s published starting prices run from $29,995 to $41,545; the right pick is the one whose equipment justifies its price for your needs.
2026 Forester trims and starting prices
The following are Subaru’s published starting MSRPs and city/highway fuel-economy figures for the 2026 lineup, not dealer quotes. Which 2026 Forester trim is best for you?
Base: best for the lowest starting price
Base is the sensible entry point if keeping the purchase price down matters more than added comfort or a larger touchscreen. Subaru lists a 180-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder, continuously variable transmission, standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight driver-assist technology, dual 7-inch multimedia displays, and 1,500-pound towing capacity. Its equipment is more basic than the upper trims, so compare the standard features with what you expect to use every day. See Subaru’s 2026 Forester brochure.

Premium: best for everyday comfort and a larger screen
Premium is a strong step up if you want comfort features without moving to a more expensive trim. It adds an 11.6-inch multimedia system, panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, windshield wiper de-icer, a 10-way power driver’s seat, X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, and LED fog lights. A hands-free power rear gate and additional driver-assist features are available in optional package OP 15, so check the specific vehicle’s equipment rather than assuming those items are standard.
Sport: best for distinctive styling and added drive modes
Sport brings bronze-finish 19-inch wheels, bronze-accented underguards, paddle shifters, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features, and dual-function X-MODE. Choose it for its appearance and traction settings, not because it is the budget option: its $34,795 starting price is above Limited’s published $35,995? Actually Limited is higher by $1,200, while Sport is $2,800 above Premium. Sport Onyx Edition is an optional dark-styling package; Subaru’s pricing announcement lists it at $36,495 MSRP.

Limited: best for comfort and convenience
Limited adds leather-trimmed upholstery, an eight-way power passenger seat, heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, hands-free power rear gate, and one-touch folding rear seatback, among other features. It is a logical choice if those cabin and loading conveniences matter more than Sport’s bronze styling.
Touring: best-equipped gas Forester
Touring is the most feature-rich gas trim. Building on Limited, it adds a 360-degree Surround View Monitor, navigation, Harman Kardon audio, DriverFocus, seat and mirror memory, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated outboard rear seats. It makes sense when you specifically value those upgrades; otherwise, the lower trims avoid paying for features you may not use.
Wilderness: best for trail-oriented equipment and higher towing capacity
Wilderness is the Forester for buyers who prioritize rough-road capability and towing over the highest published fuel economy. Subaru lists 9.3 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, enhanced dual-function X-MODE, a front-view monitor, tow points, an aluminum-alloy engine skid plate, and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. Other Forester models have 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and Wilderness has lower published economy than most gas trims at 24/28 mpg city/highway. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of performance on any particular trail or with every trailer. Details are in Subaru’s Forester features page and brochure.
Is the Forester Premium worth it over Base?
Premium’s published starting MSRP is $2,000 above Base. The difference buys a substantially larger 11.6-inch multimedia screen, heated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, power driver’s seat, LED fog lights, and additional cold-weather and traction features. If those items would improve daily use, Premium is the more comfortable all-around choice. If you mainly want standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight, and the Forester’s basic utility at the lowest price, Base keeps the initial cost down. Confirm whether the Premium vehicle you are considering includes optional package OP 15 before counting its hands-free rear gate or additional driver-assist features.

Sport or Limited: what is the difference?
Sport emphasizes distinctive bronze styling and added drive settings, with paddle shifters and dual-function X-MODE. Limited focuses on cabin and convenience upgrades, including leather-trimmed upholstery, a heated steering wheel, power passenger seat, and hands-free rear gate. Their published gas starting prices are $34,795 for Sport and $35,995 for Limited, a $1,200 difference. Pick based on the features you value rather than assuming the higher-priced trim is automatically better.
Is a 2026 Forester Hybrid worth the extra cost?
Subaru offers hybrid versions of Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring—not Base or Wilderness. The comparison table lists 35/34 mpg city/highway for the hybrid configurations. Their starting prices are higher than the corresponding gas trims: Premium Hybrid costs $2,735 more than Premium, Sport Hybrid $3,135 more than Sport, Limited Hybrid $3,000 more than Limited, and Touring Hybrid $1,550 more than Touring. Those are differences between published starting MSRPs, not estimates of fuel savings. Whether the premium pays off depends on how far you drive, local fuel prices, driving conditions, and the equipment you want; Subaru’s listed estimates alone cannot establish an individual buyer’s savings.

How to choose before you buy
- Start with your must-have equipment: compare the standard features above with the exact vehicle’s window sticker, especially when a feature depends on an optional package.
- Decide whether you want a gas or hybrid powertrain, then compare the corresponding starting prices and published economy figures.
- If you tow or regularly drive rough trails, compare Wilderness’s stated 3,500-pound maximum towing capacity and 9.3-inch clearance with your actual needs.
- Ask a local seller to confirm destination charges, current inventory, options, and the out-the-door price; published MSRP is not a local purchase quote.
