The best 2018 SUV depends on what you need it to do. For most shoppers, the Honda CR-V is the strongest all-around compact crossover, the Mazda CX-5 is the better choice for driving enjoyment, the Honda Pilot is the best mainstream family three-row SUV, and the Ford Expedition is the most capable large SUV for passengers and towing. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is the efficiency pick, while the Toyota 4Runner remains the specialist choice for serious off-road use.

This guide evaluates U.S.-market 2018 model-year SUVs as they were sold and tested new. Those vehicles are now used cars, so each recommendation also includes the checks that matter when buying one in 2026. There is no universal ranking: a compact crossover, body-on-frame 4Runner, luxury Audi Q7, and full-size Expedition serve very different purposes.

Quick answers: the best 2018 SUVs by need

These are editorial conclusions synthesized from period road tests, specifications, fuel-economy information, safety results, practicality, and likely used-car priorities. Publications did not always agree because they assigned different weights to reliability, comfort, driving dynamics, efficiency, space, and value.

What counts as a 2018 SUV?

The word “SUV” covered several different kinds of vehicles in 2018:

300T Thickened Automotive Glass Sunshade and Comes with Storage Bag,Keep Car Interior Cool,Universal Windshield Sun Shade Fit for Cars,Trucks,SUVs (L: 57.08 * 31.5 inch)
  • Material Upgrade: The new windshield sunshade for 2026 provides more sun protection and shade. We abandoned the old-fashioned titanium silver coating design and chose 300T Oxford cloth with higher density as the raw material for the sunshade. It can effectively block sunlight and heat, allowing you to enjoy the coolness and tranquility inside the car in the scorching summer.
  • Practical Performance: We focus on the practical performance of car sunshades in terms of shading and insulation, striving to bring tangible improvements to your driving experience. In the hot summer, it can reduce the impact of strong sunlight on car seats, dashboard and other components, allowing you to feel a cooler atmosphere when entering the car or driving, reducing discomfort caused by stuffiness.
  • Size Options: Our car sun shade windshield are available in three sizes: Medium: 55.12 x 27.6 inches - suitable for most compact cars, Large: 57.08 x 31.5 inches - suitable for most SUVs, XL: 63 x 33 inches - suitable for most SUVs and small truck.
  • Ordering Tip: Before placing an order, please carefully measure the size of your windshield to ensure that the product fits snugly. If you are unable to measure and confirm, you can provide us with your vehicle model via email, and we will recommend the appropriate size for your vehicle model as soon as possible.
  • Quick Installation: The installation of this car sun shade is very simple. Method 1: You can use the elasticity of the visor and put it directly in front of the car windshield. Method 2: You can also use the two sunshades that come with the original car to press and fix it. It takes you only a few seconds to install and is truly easy to use.
  • Subcompact crossovers: Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, and Nissan Rogue Sport.
  • Compact crossovers: Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Equinox, and Ford Escape.
  • Two-row midsize SUVs: Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Subaru Outback. The Honda Passport was not yet available as a 2018 model.
  • Three-row midsize crossovers: Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9, Chevrolet Traverse, Volkswagen Atlas, GMC Acadia, Kia Sorento, Nissan Pathfinder, and Dodge Durango.
  • Traditional body-on-frame SUVs: Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia.
  • Luxury SUVs: Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS, Acura MDX, and Lexus RX.

That distinction matters. A unibody crossover such as a CR-V normally offers better ride comfort, easier handling, and better fuel economy than a truck-based 4Runner. A full-size Expedition offers a genuinely usable third row and much greater towing capacity, but it is harder to park and more expensive to fuel. Car and Driver and Edmunds used separate categories for subcompact, compact, two-row, three-row, midsize luxury, and large SUVs; that approach is more useful than ranking every vehicle from one to 20. See Car and Driver’s 2018 category selections and Edmunds’ midsize SUV coverage.

Best compact crossovers of 2018

Honda CR-V: best overall compact crossover

The 2018 Honda CR-V is the best default recommendation for most compact-SUV shoppers. It combines a roomy cabin, useful cargo space, strong fuel economy, comfortable manners, and broad everyday usability better than almost any rival from the same model year. MotorTrend named it its 2018 SUV of the Year, while Kelley Blue Book also placed it among the leading compact SUVs.

EX, EX-L, and Touring trims used a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 horsepower, according to Consumer Reports. Honda’s EPA figures were:

2018 CR-V configuration City/highway/combined mpg
FWD EX, EX-L, Touring 28/34/30
AWD EX, EX-L, Touring 27/33/29
FWD LX 26/32/28
AWD LX 25/31/27

The official figures are available in Honda’s 2018 CR-V EPA fuel-economy guide. Honda Sensing was not equipped identically on every trim, so do not assume that a used CR-V has the same driver-assistance equipment as another CR-V simply because both are 2018 models. The 2018 CR-V earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award, but the award depended on specified headlights and front-crash-prevention equipment; verify the equipment on the vehicle you are considering through the IIHS vehicle listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best when new in 2018: A practical, efficient family crossover with unusually generous passenger space.

What to check when buying used now: Review oil-change records and inspect the turbocharged engine for evidence of neglected maintenance. That is a reason to examine the individual vehicle, not a basis for declaring every 2018 CR-V defective. Also verify the exact Honda Sensing equipment, recalls, tire condition, and infotainment features.

Mazda CX-5: best compact crossover for driving enjoyment

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is the enthusiast’s compact SUV. Its steering, ride-and-handling balance, braking, cabin design, and generally polished road manners make it more satisfying to drive than the typical practical crossover. Car and Driver named it its 2018 Best Compact SUV.

The 2018 CX-5 used a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a conventional six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive were available. Car and Driver listed an EPA combined range of approximately 26–28 mpg depending on drivetrain. It is important not to confuse this engine with the turbocharged motor that Mazda added for the 2019 model year: the 2018 CX-5 did not have that later turbo engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compared with the CR-V, the CX-5 has less rear-seat and cargo space. Its naturally aspirated engine is smooth and predictable but not especially quick. Consumer Reports’ comparison found the CR-V roomier, more efficient, and more reliable in that test, while the CX-5 offered the sportier character. The 2018 CX-5 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation under specific conditions, including required headlights and, according to the IIHS listing, production after March 2018.

Best when new in 2018: The compact crossover for buyers who care about driving feel and a more upscale-feeling cabin.

What to check when buying used now: Confirm the build date and headlight equipment if safety ratings matter to you. Check for uneven tire wear, wheel damage, neglected transmission fluid service, accident repairs, and whether the vehicle has the smartphone integration you expect.

Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid: best for standard driver assistance and hybrid availability

The 2018 Toyota RAV4 was the final year of the outgoing U.S. generation. It was not as polished in ride, cabin design, or handling as the newer CR-V and CX-5, but it offered a straightforward ownership proposition, available hybrid power, and standard Toyota Safety Sense P.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gas models used a 176-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder and six-speed automatic. Toyota quoted 23/30/26 mpg for FWD LE, XLE, and Adventure versions, and 22/28/25 mpg for comparable AWD models. The RAV4 Hybrid added standard AWD-i, 194 combined system horsepower, 34 mpg city, and up to 32 mpg combined depending on configuration. Toyota’s 2018 RAV4 specifications and hybrid information provide the configuration details.

Toyota Safety Sense P was standard across all 2018 RAV4 grades. The RAV4 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award subject to specified equipment. Standard driver assistance does not automatically make every used RAV4 equally safe: inspect the vehicle’s headlights, windshield-mounted sensors, collision history, and calibration after any front-end repair.

Best when new in 2018: The RAV4 Hybrid was a compelling commuter choice for buyers wanting compact-SUV practicality, standard AWD-i, and low EPA fuel consumption.

What to check when buying used now: Have a qualified shop assess the hybrid battery and hybrid system, review service records, and confirm the applicable hybrid-system warranty status. For gas models, compare the less impressive fuel economy and older cabin with the asking price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subaru Forester: best for visibility and standard all-wheel drive

The 2018 Subaru Forester is a sensible choice for snow-country drivers and outdoor users who value a high seating position, excellent outward visibility, and standard all-wheel drive. The 2.5i models used a 170-horsepower flat-four, while XT models received a 250-horsepower turbocharged flat-four. Subaru’s 2018 specifications identify all-wheel drive as standard.

The naturally aspirated Forester is not quick. The XT is substantially stronger but can bring higher fuel and maintenance costs as a used vehicle. The Forester earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick award, but the award depended on optional front-crash-prevention equipment and specified headlights. Check the individual IIHS result, not just the model name.

Standard AWD is useful on slippery roads, but it is not a substitute for winter tires. Tire condition, compound, braking, visibility, speed, and driver behavior remain critical.

Best when new in 2018: A visibility-first, all-weather compact crossover for drivers who regularly encounter snow or unpaved roads.

  • IMAGINATIVE PLAY: Young police officers ages three and up can protect their town and explore their imaginations with this action-packed vehicle.

What to check when buying used now: Inspect the turbocharged XT especially carefully, check all four tires for matching size and tread, and look for warning lights or driveline noises. Verify that eyesight and other driver-assistance functions operate correctly if equipped.

Other compact and subcompact crossovers worth considering

The Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, and Nissan Rogue Sport occupied the subcompact end of the market. They are easier to park and can cost less than a CR-V or CX-5, but they generally provide less rear-seat and cargo room. Among other compact choices, the Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Equinox, and Ford Escape may make sense when condition, equipment, and price are better than those of the category leaders. A good used example is more important than a badge-based ranking at this age.

Best midsize SUVs of 2018

Midsize SUVs divide naturally into two-row crossovers, family-oriented three-row crossovers, and truck-based capability vehicles. A two-row model is often the better choice if the third row will rarely be used: it gives adults more space and usually avoids the compromises of a small foldaway seat.

Honda Pilot: best family three-row SUV

The 2018 Honda Pilot is the strongest mainstream three-row default for a family. It offers seating for up to eight, useful seating flexibility, a comfortable ride, and a relatively easy-to-live-with interior. Kelley Blue Book ranked it first in its 2018 midsize-SUV coverage, emphasizing its combination of reliability, safety, comfort, versatility, and value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every Pilot used a 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 rated at 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. A representative 2WD model with the nine-speed automatic was rated at 20 city/27 highway/23 combined mpg. Honda offered terrain-management modes, with additional modes on AWD versions. Exact transmission and equipment vary by trim, so consult Honda’s 2018 Pilot specifications and trim information.

The Pilot’s third row is useful for children and occasional adults, although a full-size SUV offers more room. The nine-speed automatic can feel less polished than some competitors’ transmissions, and infotainment and safety equipment vary significantly by trim.

Best when new in 2018: The best all-around family midsize SUV for buyers prioritizing passenger capacity, comfort, and usability over sportiness.

What to check when buying used now: Test the transmission through multiple gears, check the exact infotainment and safety equipment, inspect all power seats and sliding mechanisms, and bring the family’s child seats to the test drive. Do not assume every eight-passenger Pilot has the same second-row configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mazda CX-9: best midsize SUV for driving and refinement

The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is the driver’s choice among three-row midsize SUVs. Car and Driver named it its 2018 Best Mid-Size SUV, citing its road manners and refinement.

Its standard 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder produced 227 horsepower on regular 87-octane fuel and 250 horsepower on 93-octane fuel, with 310 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic was standard, and buyers could choose FWD or AWD. EPA estimates were 22/28/24 mpg for FWD and 20/26/23 mpg for AWD. Maximum towing capacity was 3,500 pounds. Mazda’s CX-9 fact sheet and specification deck provide the engine and towing details.

The CX-9’s drawbacks are its relatively tight third row and less cargo room than the Chevrolet Traverse or Volkswagen Atlas. Premium fuel unlocks the higher horsepower rating, but regular fuel remains supported. The CX-9 appeared on the IIHS 2018 Top Safety Pick list when equipped with the required equipment.

Best when new in 2018: The three-row SUV for drivers who want a composed, refined, near-premium experience.

What to check when buying used now: Inspect the turbocharger and cooling system, confirm maintenance records, and test the third row with the people who will actually use it. If towing, verify the vehicle’s tow equipment rather than relying only on the model’s maximum rating.

Toyota Highlander: best conservative family choice and hybrid three-row

The 2018 Toyota Highlander is a conservative, comfortable family choice with seating for up to eight in gas versions, standard Toyota Safety Sense features, and a strong reputation for straightforward usability. Its 3.5-liter V6 produced 295 horsepower. Toyota quoted 19 city/26 highway mpg for AWD gas models, while the Highlander Hybrid was rated at 29 city/27 highway/28 combined mpg. Consumer Reports identified the hybrid as the most fuel-efficient midsize SUV in its testing.

Edmunds listed a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The Highlander earned a 2018 IIHS Top Safety Pick award. See Toyota’s 2018 Highlander details and the Consumer Reports road-test report.

The Highlander’s third row is tighter than the Pilot’s or Traverse’s, and Edmunds noted that its 2018 infotainment system lacked Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The hybrid is attractive for urban fuel economy but is not the right choice for buyers who regularly tow heavy trailers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best when new in 2018: The low-drama family SUV for buyers who favor comfort, conservative engineering, and an available efficient hybrid.

What to check when buying used now: Confirm whether the vehicle has smartphone integration, inspect the hybrid battery and service history on Hybrid models, and verify the towing equipment on gas versions. Check third-row access in person; published seat counts do not describe comfort equally well.

Chevrolet Traverse: best for maximum midsize space

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse was all-new and is the space-focused choice in the midsize class. It offered up to eight-passenger seating and, according to Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds, had a meaningful advantage when carrying passengers and cargo with the third row in use. That makes it a better fit than the CX-9 or Highlander for families who regularly use all three rows.

Do not transfer cargo figures from one vehicle to another. Cargo measurements vary by publication methodology, seat position, and whether the measurement is taken to the roof, window line, or floor. Compare the actual Traverse with the actual Atlas, Pilot, or Highlander you are considering. The same caution applies to towing: use the vehicle-specific Chevrolet label, tow package, payload rating, and owner’s manual.

  • PORTABLE & SPACE-SAVING: When not in use, simply fold the SUV trunk organizer flat with the Velcro strips. The collapsible design is perfect for freeing up trunk space or storing the organizer neatly at home. An essential item for tidy travels.

Best when new in 2018: A family hauler that prioritizes usable passenger and cargo room over sporty handling or luxury-trim polish.

What to check when buying used now: Examine transmission behavior, electrical functions, infotainment, air-conditioning performance, and the condition of the third-row mechanisms. Look for open recalls and evidence of fleet or rental use, then obtain an independent inspection.

Volkswagen Atlas: best for open-road space, but not power

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas was new for the model year and offered three rows, a broad interior, and useful cargo capacity. Edmunds listed 96.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity and 5,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity in its comparison, along with fuel economy ranging from 19 to 24 mpg combined depending on configuration.

Edmunds found the Atlas’s V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder engines merely adequate rather than strong. Its large interior is the main reason to shop for one. Early examples deserve a careful inspection of electronics, fit and finish, service records, and open recalls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best when new in 2018: Buyers wanting an expansive cabin and open-road family comfort at a price below many luxury alternatives.

What to check when buying used now: Test every electronic feature, inspect panel fit and interior trim, verify the engine and drivetrain service history, and check recall completion by VIN.

Ford Edge: best two-row midsize crossover

The 2018 Ford Edge is a good choice for buyers who want a comfortable two-row SUV with more cargo room and available power than many compact crossovers, but do not need a third row. Edmunds listed 19–24 mpg combined, up to 73.4 cubic feet of cargo space, and 3,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity. Engine choices included a turbocharged four-cylinder and available V6 engines, including a 315-horsepower twin-turbo V6 in the Edge Sport.

Best when new in 2018: A spacious two-row road-trip vehicle with strong available performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check when buying used now: Verify which engine, drivetrain, and tow package the vehicle has. The Sport’s extra performance can mean higher tire, fuel, and maintenance costs. Check the transmission, turbo system, cooling system, and electronic driver-assistance features.

Subaru Outback: the crossover-wagon alternative

The 2018 Subaru Outback is lower and more wagon-like than a conventional SUV, but it belongs on a midsize-SUV shopping list because many buyers cross-shop it with crossovers. KBB listed 28 mpg combined and described it as broadly capable and efficient.

The Outback is especially appealing for snow, road trips, cargo flexibility, and moderate outdoor use. Its trade-off is a less upright seating position and wagon-like access compared with a Pilot or 4Runner. As with the Forester, standard AWD does not replace good winter tires.

Toyota 4Runner: best off-road midsize SUV

The 2018 Toyota 4Runner is not a competitor to the CR-V in the usual sense. It uses body-on-frame construction, offers available low-range four-wheel drive, can tow up to 5,000 pounds, and is considerably more suited to trails and rough terrain than most crossover SUVs. Edmunds listed 18 mpg combined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That capability comes with a bouncier ride, slower handling, a dated driving experience, and poor fuel economy. Buy a 4Runner because you need its truck-based platform and low range—not because you expect crossover-like comfort.

Best when new in 2018: Trail use, durable truck-based utility, and buyers who specifically need low-range gearing.

What to check when buying used now: Inspect the frame and underbody for rust or off-road damage, test 4WD and low range, listen for driveline noises, and look closely at suspension, skid plates, hitch hardware, and uneven tire wear.

Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler Unlimited: capability specialists

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a rugged but civilized midsize SUV with a wide range of engines and trims. KBB highlighted everything from ordinary family-oriented versions to the 707-horsepower Trackhawk. It is a reasonable alternative for buyers who want stronger off-road or towing credentials than a typical crossover without moving to a full-size SUV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited was all-new and improved its powertrains and civility, but it remained a deliberately specialized vehicle. It is excellent for open-air and trail use and less compelling as a quiet, efficient family commuter. On either Jeep, capability, ride comfort, fuel economy, cargo convenience, and long-term ownership experience vary substantially by trim.

Best large SUVs of 2018

Full-size SUVs are the right category when the third row will be occupied frequently, when substantial cargo must remain behind that row, or when towing is a central requirement. They are not simply larger versions of compact crossovers: they are wider, longer, more expensive to fuel, and more difficult to maneuver.

Ford Expedition: best large mainstream SUV

The 2018 Ford Expedition is the best overall mainstream full-size SUV. It was redesigned for 2018 with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, standard 10-speed automatic, excellent towing capability, and a genuinely usable third row. Cars.com ranked it first in a four-vehicle 2018 full-size SUV comparison with 820 out of 1,000 points, citing its third-row comfort, powertrain, towing, technology, and overall capability.

XLT and Limited versions produced 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Platinum produced 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft when using premium fuel. Maximum available towing capacity was 9,300 pounds, configuration-dependent. An extended-length Expedition MAX added cargo capacity. Ford’s 2018 Expedition powertrain and towing information gives the manufacturer’s details.

The size and fuel bill are the main disadvantages. In Cars.com testing, an Expedition averaged 21.6 mpg unladen but only 10.2 mpg while towing a roughly 3,500-pound trailer. That is a useful reminder that EPA or unladen test figures do not predict fuel use under load.

Best when new in 2018: Large families, frequent highway travel, heavy towing, and buyers who need a genuinely usable third row.

What to check when buying used now: Verify the exact tow package, payload sticker, hitch, cooling equipment, trailer-brake provisions, and axle configuration. Inspect the EcoBoost engine, turbochargers, 10-speed transmission, suspension, and power-folding seats. Confirm that the vehicle’s size and fuel costs fit your daily use.

Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban: best for V8 towing and traditional truck utility

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe and longer Suburban are traditional truck-based choices. Cars.com tested a Tahoe RST with the optional 6.2-liter V8 rated at 420 horsepower; the standard engine was a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8. The Tahoe offered strong front seats, towing power, and competitive observed fuel economy, but its third row was the least accommodating in the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Suburban when cargo behind the third row matters more than maneuverability. The Tahoe is easier to place in a garage but has less rear cargo room and a less family-friendly third row than the Expedition.

Best when new in 2018: Buyers who prefer V8 power, traditional truck-based capability, and widespread service availability.

What to check when buying used now: Confirm whether it has the 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter engine and the correct tow package. Inspect the transmission, magnetic ride-control equipment if fitted, air-conditioning, infotainment, suspension, and third-row folding mechanisms.

Nissan Armada: best equipment value among large SUVs

The 2018 Nissan Armada ranked second in Cars.com’s comparison. Its test vehicle used a 390-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 and four-wheel drive. Cars.com praised its quiet cabin, equipment, value, and standard active-safety technology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Armada’s weaknesses were poor fuel economy, an undersized third row, and an outdated infotainment system without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It can therefore look attractive on the used market, but buyers should budget for older technology and confirm that its third row actually meets their needs.

Best when new in 2018: A quiet, well-equipped large SUV that could cost less than an equivalently equipped Expedition or Tahoe.

What to check when buying used now: Test the V8 and seven-speed automatic under load, inspect four-wheel-drive operation, verify the towing equipment, and confirm whether the vehicle’s multimedia limitations are acceptable.

Toyota Sequoia: best for third-row room and truck-based Toyota hardware

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia used a 5.7-liter V8 rated at 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. It could tow up to 7,400 pounds, used body-on-frame construction, and included Toyota Safety Sense P as standard. Toyota quoted 35.1 inches of third-row legroom, making it one of the more adult-friendly third rows in the segment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cars.com ranked it fourth in its comparison and criticized its aging interior, six-speed transmission, multimedia system, ride, and handling. It was already an old design in 2018, so it should not be presented as the most modern or efficient large SUV.

Best when new in 2018: Buyers who value third-row room, Toyota’s truck-based platform, and off-road hardware over modern cabin technology.

What to check when buying used now: Inspect the frame, suspension, four-wheel-drive system, V8 cooling system, and outdated multimedia equipment. Confirm the actual tow rating and payload rather than assuming every Sequoia has the maximum rating.

Large-SUV comparison

Model Notable configuration Maximum tow rating Third-row assessment Main trade-off

Best luxury SUVs of 2018

Luxury SUVs deserve a separate list. Their purchase prices may be lower now because of depreciation, but repair, tire, insurance, and maintenance costs can remain luxury-grade. A low used-car price does not make a used luxury SUV a low-cost vehicle.

Audi Q7: best midsize luxury SUV

Car and Driver named the 2018 Audi Q7 its Best Midsize Luxury SUV. It combined a high-quality interior, comfortable ride, strong handling, and usable second-row space. It offered a seven-passenger layout, a turbocharged four-cylinder or supercharged V6, and up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity.

The third row is tight, so the Q7 is better for occasional third-row use than for regularly carrying adults. Used buyers should budget for premium tires and maintenance and obtain a specialist inspection before purchase.

Volvo XC90: best for styling, safety emphasis, and three-row design

The 2018 Volvo XC90 offered distinctive styling, a safety-focused reputation, and three-row seating. Edmunds noted that adults fit best in the first two rows and that the four-cylinder-only powertrain could feel strained under load.

  • COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with different kinds of vehicles, such as car, motorcycle, truck, SUV, ATV, and so on.

It is worth considering for design and cabin atmosphere, but a used example requires careful inspection of electronics, air suspension if equipped, cooling systems, and service records. Do not assume that a luxury badge or safety reputation guarantees low ownership cost.

Mercedes-Benz GLS450: best large luxury SUV

Car and Driver named the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 its Best Large SUV. Its strengths were luxury, ride quality, and a genuinely usable third row. It carried a 7,500-pound tow rating.

The GLS is a compelling answer for a buyer who wants full-size passenger space and a premium experience, but depreciation should not be confused with inexpensive ownership. A pre-purchase inspection by a Mercedes-Benz specialist is especially important.

2018 SUV safety ratings: what the awards do—and do not—tell you

IIHS and NHTSA use different testing and rating systems. A high NHTSA star rating does not eliminate the need to review IIHS crashworthiness results, equipment, recalls, and the individual vehicle’s history.

For a used 2018 SUV, safety equipment cannot be inferred from the model name alone. Confirm:

  1. Trim level and factory options.
  2. Whether the optional safety package was installed.
  3. Headlight type.
  4. Build date when the award has a production-date limitation.
  5. Whether collision damage was repaired correctly.
  6. Whether open recalls remain by checking the VIN.

How to choose among the 2018 SUV categories

Decision Usually favors What you give up
Compact versus midsize Compact for easier parking and efficiency; midsize for passenger room and an available third row Midsize vehicles cost more to fuel and maneuver
Midsize versus full-size Full-size for an adult-usable third row and stronger towing Greater width, length, fuel use, and purchase cost
Crossover versus body-on-frame Crossover for comfort and handling; body-on-frame for heavy towing and serious off-road work Truck-based SUVs generally ride less smoothly and use more fuel
Hybrid versus gas Hybrid for urban efficiency and commuting Battery condition, system inspection, and potentially higher purchase cost
AWD versus 4WD AWD for many slippery-road conditions; 4WD with low range for serious trails AWD does not provide the low-range gearing of a capable 4WD system
Turbocharged versus naturally aspirated Turbo for stronger low-rpm torque; naturally aspirated for predictable response Used buyers should prioritize service history, fuel requirements, and condition over engine design alone

If you regularly carry seven or more people, compare a full-size SUV with a minivan. A midsize third row may technically provide the required seats but still be cramped for adults, child seats, or cargo. Car and Driver specifically recommended considering a full-size SUV or minivan for buyers who regularly haul large groups.

What to inspect before buying a 2018 SUV used in 2026

At roughly eight years old, condition and maintenance history can matter more than the original ranking. Use this checklist:

  1. Run the 17-character VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. The NHTSA VIN tool identifies unrepaired recalls associated with the specific vehicle. Confirm that every open recall has been completed.
  2. Obtain a vehicle-history report. Look for flood, salvage, rental, commercial, fleet, and accident history. A clean report is not a substitute for an independent inspection.
  3. Inspect the tires. Check age, tread depth, sidewall damage, uneven wear, and mismatched tires. On AWD vehicles, mismatched rolling circumference can stress the driveline.
  4. Test AWD and 4WD. Engage the system without warning lights, clunks, binding, or abnormal noises. On a 4Runner, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, or Sequoia, verify that low range operates correctly if equipped.
  5. Test every driver-assistance feature. Confirm cameras, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Windshield replacement or collision repairs can affect sensor calibration.
  6. Confirm smartphone integration. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were absent from some 2018 systems and limited to upper trims on others. Do not assume a USB port means smartphone projection is supported.
  7. Try the third row with the real occupants. Bring the actual child seats or adult passengers. Check access, second-row movement, headroom, legroom, and cargo room behind the third row.
  8. Verify towing equipment. Check the tow package, hitch, cooling equipment, payload sticker, tongue-weight limit, axle configuration, and trailer-brake provisions. A vehicle’s maximum published tow rating may not apply to the example for sale.
  9. Review powertrain service records. Pay particular attention to transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, turbochargers, hybrid systems, cooling systems, and required fluid services.
  10. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. A qualified shop can find leaks, structural repairs, worn suspension parts, drivetrain problems, and electronic faults that a short test drive will not reveal.

Which 2018 SUV should you buy used now?

Best for a family of five

Start with the Honda CR-V if a third row is unnecessary. It is easier to park and generally more efficient than a midsize SUV. Move to the Honda Pilot if you need more rear-seat space, frequent cargo flexibility, or occasional third-row use.

Best for three child seats

Test the actual seats in a Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Traverse, or Ford Expedition. Published seating capacity does not guarantee that three particular child seats will fit across a row, and second-row captain’s chairs can change the practical layout.

Best for frequent highway trips

The Mazda CX-5 is the best compact choice for drivers who value road manners. For a larger family, the Mazda CX-9 offers the most engaging driving experience among the mainstream three-row choices, while the Ford Expedition is the better answer when space and towing matter more.

Best for snow

The Subaru Forester is a sensible visibility and standard-AWD choice, and the Subaru Outback is worth considering for road trips and cargo flexibility. Buy the best winter tires you can reasonably afford; AWD helps acceleration but does not shorten braking distances on ice.

Best for fuel economy

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the compact efficiency pick, with 34 mpg city and up to 32 mpg combined depending on configuration. For a three-row vehicle, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid was rated 29 city/27 highway/28 combined by Toyota. Have the hybrid battery and system inspected on any used example.

Best for towing

The Ford Expedition is the strongest mainstream answer, with up to 9,300 pounds of available towing capacity in the correct configuration. The Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia are also traditional truck-based choices. Verify the exact vehicle’s payload and tow equipment before purchase.

Best for trails

Choose the Toyota 4Runner or a suitably equipped Jeep Wrangler Unlimited when low-range gearing, ground clearance, and trail hardware are central requirements. A CR-V, RAV4, or Forester may handle gravel and snow well, but they are not substitutes for a low-range off-road vehicle.

Best luxury used choice

The Audi Q7 is the strongest midsize luxury pick for interior quality, ride, and handling, while the Mercedes-Benz GLS450 offers the more usable large-luxury third row. Buy either only after pricing out maintenance, tires, insurance, and likely repairs—not just the purchase price.

Best used value approach

Instead of selecting the cheapest 2018 SUV, select the best-documented example of the right category. A well-maintained CR-V, CX-5, Pilot, Highlander Hybrid, or Expedition with completed recalls, matching tires, no flood or salvage history, and a clean independent inspection is generally a better purchase than a cheaper but neglected example of a supposedly superior model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5 the best SUV of 2018?

Both were category leaders for different reasons. The Honda CR-V was the stronger all-around choice for space, efficiency, and family practicality. The Mazda CX-5 was the better choice for driving enjoyment and cabin polish. Consumer Reports found the CR-V roomier and more efficient, while Car and Driver named the CX-5 its 2018 Best Compact SUV.

Which 2018 SUV has the most usable third row?

Among mainstream midsize SUVs, the Honda Pilot and Chevrolet Traverse are strong family choices, with the Traverse emphasizing maximum space. For frequent adult use or substantial cargo behind the third row, move up to a Ford Expedition, long-wheelbase Expedition MAX, or Chevrolet Suburban.

Does every 2018 SUV with an IIHS safety award have the same equipment?

No. IIHS awards can depend on trim, optional front-crash-prevention equipment, headlight type, and sometimes production date. Check the individual vehicle’s IIHS result, equipment list, build date, collision history, and VIN recall status.

What is the best 2018 SUV to buy used in 2026?

For most buyers, start with a well-maintained Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5. Choose a Honda Pilot for family space, a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or Highlander Hybrid for efficiency, a Ford Expedition for towing and full-size space, and a Toyota 4Runner for serious off-road use. The individual vehicle’s service, recall, accident, tire, and inspection history should decide between otherwise similar examples.

The Bottom Line

There is no single best 2018 SUV, but the shortlist is clear: choose the Honda CR-V for the best broad-market compact package, the Mazda CX-5 if you enjoy driving, the Honda Pilot for everyday family versatility, the Mazda CX-9 for three-row road manners, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or Highlander Hybrid for efficiency, the Toyota 4Runner for real off-road work, and the Ford Expedition for full-size passenger space and towing. In 2026, condition matters more than the original award: check the VIN, recalls, service history, tires, safety equipment, technology, and have the SUV independently inspected before buying.
