The department unveiled its patrol trucks on October 28, 2025. The most consistent official and later news accounts describe 10 patrol vehicles; a Guardian report based on obtained emails says the gift also included a separate vehicle for SWAT, bringing its reported total to 11.
Who donated the Cybertrucks, and when did LVMPD receive them?
The donors were venture capitalist Ben Horowitz and his wife, Felicia. Sheriff Kevin McMahill announced the gift at his State of the Department address on February 25, 2025, initially describing the donor as anonymous. The Las Vegas Review-Journal identified the Horowitzes the next day based on LVMPD information, and the department confirmed their role in subsequent reporting.
The announcement and the unveiling were separate events. LVMPD introduced the patrol vehicles publicly on October 28, 2025, and said each area command would receive a Cybertruck. The Associated Press reported in November that the trucks were intended for patrol use.
How many Cybertrucks were donated?
The count depends on whether a separate SWAT-assigned vehicle is included. The initial reporting was inconsistent: TechCrunch reported that department sources gave counts of both 10 and 11. LVMPD’s October unveiling and the AP’s November account describe 10 patrol Cybertrucks. The Guardian later reported, based on emails it obtained, that the donation consisted of 10 patrol trucks plus one “sting protector” for SWAT.

| 10 | Patrol vehicles | LVMPD’s October 2025 announcement and AP’s November 2025 report |
| 11 | 10 patrol vehicles plus one SWAT vehicle | The Guardian’s December 2025 account, based on emails it obtained |
So “10 patrol trucks” is the clearest description of the unveiled patrol fleet; “11 vehicles” reflects The Guardian’s broader account of the donation, including the SWAT vehicle.
Who paid for the fleet, and what was it worth?
LVMPD said the Horowitzes covered the cost and that no tax dollars were used to purchase or outfit the vehicles. That is the department’s funding statement. The department’s announcement did not give a dollar value.

The Guardian reported that the donation was finalized in late January 2025 and was worth about $2.7 million. That estimate and the 11-vehicle breakdown come from its reporting based on obtained emails, not an official LVMPD valuation. TechCrunch said the department did not answer its earlier question about how the donation was made; The Guardian later reported that it went through Behind the Blue.
How were the trucks prepared for police work?
LVMPD credited Unplugged Performance and Upfit with outfitting the vehicles for patrol functions, and Ink and Architectural Expo with wrapping them. The department presented the trucks as patrol vehicles assigned across its area commands. The AP reported that roughly 400 officers had been trained to operate them and that the department planned to use public charging stations.

At the unveiling, McMahill described the fleet as representing “innovation” and “sustainability” and said it reflected the department’s commitment to serving the community with available tools. In February, he had said: “We want these things because the cops inside will be safe no matter what. These stop bullets. They are also a tremendous recruitment tool for us.” Those are the sheriff’s stated reasons for seeking the vehicles; the cited accounts do not establish measured effects on officer safety, recruitment, response times, crime or other public-safety outcomes.

A privately funded vehicle fleet can avoid a purchase and outfitting expense for taxpayers while still raising questions about transparency and how expensive donated equipment enters public service. TechCrunch reported transparency concerns raised by advocates in connection with earlier Horowitz gifts and technology purchases. The AP also reported oversight concerns about the Cybertruck donation.
Rank #4
Those concerns are questions about disclosure and public oversight, not evidence in the cited accounts that the gift involved improper influence. The department’s no-tax-dollar statement addresses who paid for purchase and outfitting; the Guardian’s later reporting adds information about the route and estimated value of the gift.
