What Ford held after selling most of its Rivian shares
TechCrunch reported on February 9, 2023, that Ford’s remaining Rivian stake was 1.15%, equal to 10.5 million shares. That is a snapshot reported at the time; it does not establish Ford’s present-day stake.

The headline framed the sale as Ford selling a “majority stake.” The reported remaining share count and percentage describe the holding after the reductions, not the price Ford received or the terms of each transaction.
Why the headline says $7.3 billion and Ford’s filing says $7.4 billion
TechCrunch’s headline used a $7.3 billion write-down figure. Ford’s 2022 annual report on Form 10-K reported a $7.4 billion loss on the Rivian investment for fiscal 2022. These are figures from different sources; the company filing’s figure should not be silently substituted for the headline’s, or vice versa.

A write-down or investment loss reflects a decline in the investment’s value for accounting purposes. It is distinct from cash proceeds Ford might have received by selling shares. The cited reporting does not establish that the $7.4 billion loss was cash received from the sale.

TechCrunch described the reported sale as part of a reduction that had been underway since May 2022:

- Fiscal 2022: Ford’s annual report recorded a $7.4 billion loss on the Rivian investment.
The figures trace two related but different developments: a falling investment valuation and a series of share sales. The available reporting does not establish the exact dates, prices, or proceeds for each February sale.
