The Bell GT6 Carbon is a carbon-shell, full-face helmet designed for closed-cockpit racing. Its identity is complicated by a naming change: Bell’s 2023 catalogue lists the GT6 Carbon, while the Bell Racing page now returned at the GT6 Carbon web address is titled GT6 ULTRA. Treat those as potentially different generations. Before buying or racing, match the helmet’s model label, size, shield and homologation to the exact unit in your hands.
The earlier GT6 Carbon appears in FIA List No. 49 under homologation PH.108.21-C. Validity depends on the date printed on the helmet label and on the sporting regulations for your event; a web-page description for the newer GT6 ULTRA should not be used to assign ratings to an older GT6 Carbon.

What the Bell GT6 Carbon is
The GT6 Carbon is a closed-car racing helmet with a full-face design and a carbon shell. Bell’s 2023 catalogue identifies it as the GT6 Carbon and lists catalogue model numbers 1239001–1239009 and 1239031–1239033. The catalogue gives a size range of 54 through 68, using the helmet sizing convention rather than a claim that every size is stocked in every market.

Bell positions the helmet for racers in closed-cockpit environments. That use case matters: the eyeport, shield, ventilation and provisions for race-car equipment are intended to work inside a cockpit, where a driver may need a wide field of view, radio equipment, forced air or hydration. It is not described as a street helmet, an open-face karting helmet or a general-purpose motorcycle helmet.

GT6 Carbon versus the current GT6 ULTRA page
At the current Bell Racing European web address associated with the GT6 Carbon, the page title is GT6 ULTRA. That page describes a premium carbon-shell helmet with FIA 8859-2024 and Snell SA2025 homologations. Bell’s 2023 catalogue, by contrast, names the earlier product GT6 Carbon, and the FIA’s 2025 list records that name under PH.108.21-C.
This is a product-identity issue, not a minor wording difference. A GT6 Carbon bought from existing stock may have different labeling, shield specification, liner details or approval dates from a GT6 ULTRA sold as the current model. Do not transfer the newer page’s FIA 8859-2024 or Snell SA2025 claims to a helmet unless those approvals are printed on that helmet’s own label or documentation.
How to identify the helmet you are actually buying
- Ask the seller for a photograph of the certification and model label inside the helmet, not just a stock image.
- Match the model name and any model or part number with the Bell catalogue or the seller’s invoice.
- Check the size marking, shield type and included accessories against the physical helmet.
- Confirm that the homologation is accepted by the sanctioning body and class in which you will compete.
- For older inventory, ask Bell Racing or an authorized seller whether it is the earlier GT6 Carbon or the current GT6 ULTRA naming/version.
Homologation and FIA validity
FIA List No. 49, dated 4 March 2025, records Bell Racing GT6 Carbon under PH.108.21-C. The list contains size-dependent end dates. It also states that the actual validity is the date on the product homologation label; the list’s end date is the latest date that may appear on that label. Scrutineers and event regulations can impose additional requirements, so the list alone is not a substitute for checking your helmet and rulebook.

Approval is therefore version-, size- and label-sensitive. A helmet can be physically sound yet unusable in a series if its approval has expired, if the series requires a newer standard, or if the label is missing or unreadable. Keep a clear photograph of the label with your race records and recheck requirements when regulations change.
Construction and documented equipment
Bell’s catalogue describes a premium carbon shell and a wide eyeport. Carbon construction can reduce shell mass compared with some other constructions, but the supplied Bell material does not publish a GT6 Carbon weight, impact score or independent comparison. Do not infer a performance advantage from the word carbon alone.
The current GT6 ULTRA page lists a carbon composite shell, wide eyeport, multi-density liner, extraction vents, factory-installed HANS anchors and an SE06 shield. Those are specifications of the page’s current product presentation. Confirm that your GT6 Carbon has the same components before ordering replacement parts or describing them in a vehicle technical inspection.

Eyeport and shield
A wide eyeport is useful in a closed cockpit because the driver must scan mirrors, corner entry and instruments without moving the torso. The shield designation shown on the current page is SE06. The catalogue and current page should not be treated as proof that every earlier GT6 Carbon uses the same shield. Check the shield marking and Bell’s compatibility information for your exact generation before buying a replacement, tear-off system or shield hardware.

The current page describes a multi-density liner and extraction vents, while the catalogue describes related systems for the GT6 Carbon family. Factory-installed HANS anchors are listed for the current GT6 ULTRA presentation. Inspect the anchors, liner and vent openings on the helmet you receive; do not retrofit safety hardware or drill the shell. If an anchor, liner component or vent is damaged, obtain the correct Bell service part or have the helmet assessed by an authorized technician.
Choosing the right size and fit
Bell lists GT6 Carbon sizes 54–68, but availability can vary by market and by color or homologation version. Head circumference alone does not guarantee a safe fit. Bell’s guidance is that the helmet must fit properly, the chin strap must be securely fastened and peripheral vision must be adequate for maximum protection. Bell also warns that no helmet protects against all foreseeable impacts.

Use a fit-first process
- Measure your head according to the sizing instructions for the exact GT6 generation you are considering. Use the largest measurement only as a starting point; head shape and cheek pressure still determine the practical size.
- Try the helmet on with the same balaclava, eyewear and radio or hydration equipment you will use in the car. A helmet that fits without equipment can become too tight when those items are added.
- Check that the liner contacts the head evenly without a pressure point, rocking or a gap at the crown. New padding may feel firm, but sharp pain or numbness is not an acceptable break-in plan.
- Buckle the chin strap every time and adjust it so the helmet cannot roll forward or lift away from the head. Never race with the strap loose or tucked under the jaw.
- Look through the normal driving position and confirm unobstructed peripheral vision. If the eyeport, balaclava or a communication component blocks your view, resolve that before driving.
- Have the fit checked by a knowledgeable race-equipment technician or scrutineer if you are between sizes or changing liner components.
Do not select a larger size to create space for comfort pads, nor remove structural or retention components to make a smaller size tolerable. Ask Bell which replacement fit pads are approved for your shell and whether a different size is safer.

Bell documents optional top and side air intakes plus communication and hydration systems for the current GT6 ULTRA page. The 2023 GT6 Carbon catalogue describes related systems for that family. These options can be valuable in endurance racing or hot cockpits, but the mounting points and hose paths are generation-specific.
The US accessory catalogue lists a forced-air V05 nozzle for HP6/GT6 helmets. That listing does not, by itself, establish fitment for every GT6 Carbon shell. Before ordering, provide the seller with your model number, shell size and photographs of the intake area. Verify whether the kit is intended for the earlier GT6 Carbon, the current GT6 ULTRA or both.

Installation checks
- Use only the intake, radio and hydration parts approved for the shell; do not cut or drill the helmet.
- Route hoses and cables so they cannot catch on belts, steering controls or the HANS device.
- Confirm that a microphone, ear speaker or hydration tube does not create a pressure point or interfere with the chin strap.
- Test the system while seated in the car, with the visor closed and the head in the normal driving position.
- Recheck shield movement and emergency extraction procedures after equipment is installed.

For a used helmet, ask whether it has been involved in any impact, dropped from height or modified. A seller’s statement cannot restore an unknown impact history. Reject a helmet with cracks, crushed liner, damaged anchors, missing labels, distorted shield hardware or chemical damage to the shell or interior.
Care, cleaning and storage
Bell recommends automotive-finish products on the shell and warns against abrasive or solvent-based cleaners. For the interior, Bell recommends mild soap and water, hand washing the fit pad and allowing the helmet to dry before storage.
- Remove detachable interior pads according to the helmet instructions.
- Wash the fit pad by hand with mild soap and water; rinse thoroughly without aggressive scrubbing.
- Wipe the shell with a product suitable for automotive finishes. Keep solvents, abrasive compounds and harsh household cleaners away from the shell, shield and decals.
- Air-dry the liner and shell completely at room temperature before reassembly. Do not use a high-heat dryer, heater or direct intense sunlight.
- Store the dry helmet in a protective bag, away from fuel, solvents, battery fumes and heavy objects that could deform the liner or shield.
Inspect the chin strap, anchors, shield seal, visor hardware, liner and vents before each event. Replace consumable or damaged parts with components specified for the exact helmet generation.

No named product performance statistic, laboratory comparison or independent ranking is published in the Bell catalogue, the current product page or the cited FIA listing. There is no substantiated figure here for GT6 Carbon weight, impact attenuation, aerodynamic drag or cooling performance. Claims that it is safer or faster than another helmet would require a like-for-like test that is not documented.
The practical decision is consequently about verified identity, current approval, fit, visibility and compatible equipment. If a retailer cannot show the label or answer which generation is being sold, postpone the purchase rather than relying on a generic GT6 photograph.
Before your first race
- Record the model name, catalogue or part number, size and homologation number.
- Photograph the product label and compare its date with the event regulations.
- Complete a seated cockpit fit check with HANS, belts, balaclava, radio and hydration equipment installed.
- Confirm the shield and any air or communication accessory by model generation.
- Clean and dry the helmet, then inspect retention hardware and peripheral vision immediately before scrutineering.
The Bottom Line
The Bell GT6 Carbon can be a suitable closed-cockpit racing helmet when the exact shell, label, size and equipment match your needs. Because Bell’s current page uses the GT6 ULTRA name, verify the physical helmet’s generation and homologation rather than assuming current-page specifications apply.
