What the Basalt X Max-versus-Plus decision actually involves
This comparison is for the Citroën Basalt X sold in India. “MAX” and “PLUS” are trim names, not separate vehicles. The trim changes equipment, interior presentation and available powertrains; it does not automatically mean that one version has a different safety rating, a different body shell or a proven advantage in fuel economy, reliability or ride quality.

The current manufacturer evidence is the Citroën BasaltX brochure indexed for April 2026. Its matrix identifies PLUS as the lower equipment tier and MAX as the more fully equipped tier. Because the brochure PDF was indexed rather than directly retrievable during the source check, treat the matrix as the starting point and confirm the exact equipment on the vehicle quotation, accessible brochure or dealer demonstrator for your model year.
That date qualification matters. Citroën has used the YOU/PLUS/MAX naming structure in an older February 2025 brochure, but its equipment descriptions should not be merged with the April 2026 Basalt X matrix. Variant names, wheel designs, standard features and availability can change without changing the trim name.

Powertrains: compare like for like before comparing trims
The 2026 brochure lists three powertrain combinations for PLUS and two for MAX:

The fair price comparison
If you are trying to measure the cost of MAX equipment, compare PLUS Turbo MT with MAX Turbo MT, or PLUS Turbo AT with MAX Turbo AT. Comparing a PLUS PureTech 82 quote with a MAX Turbo quote combines a trim change with an engine and transmission change, so the price gap cannot be attributed to MAX features.

What MAX adds in everyday use
Alloy wheels are the most visible upgrade
MAX’s listed 16-inch Urban Diamond Cut alloy wheels give it a different exterior appearance from the PLUS equipment shown in the brochure. The visual change is easy to see in a showroom, but wheel design is not a substitute for checking the complete wheel-and-tyre specification. Ask for the tyre size, spare-wheel type and whether the quoted car has the same specification as the display vehicle. If a particular tyre sidewall or replacement cost matters to you, write it into the quotation rather than relying on a photograph.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel changes the main touch point
A leather-wrapped steering wheel is listed for MAX and not listed for PLUS. This is a small equipment item, but it is touched on every trip. Buyers who care about cabin finish may value it more than a feature used only occasionally. Buyers who mainly want the lowest cost and are satisfied with the PLUS wheel material can direct the difference toward registration, insurance or an emergency fund instead.

Two extra tweeters increase the listed speaker count
PLUS is listed with four speakers; MAX adds two tweeters, making six speakers in total. That is a hardware difference, not evidence of a measured improvement in clarity, bass or volume. No independent Plus-versus-Max audio test is established here. Listen to the exact demonstrator with your own phone and music, and remember that source quality, equalizer settings, cabin noise and your seating position affect the experience.
Wireless charging is a convenience feature, not a phone guarantee
MAX includes a listed wireless charger, whereas PLUS does not list one. It can reduce cable clutter for a compatible handset, but wireless charging can be slower or warmer than a wired connection and some phones need precise placement. Ask the dealer to demonstrate charging with your case and phone before treating the feature as decisive. Keep a wired cable available for navigation-heavy trips or if the pad does not maintain a connection.
Interior presentation differs beyond one material
The brochure identifies black leatherette door armrests for both trim descriptions while showing a different seat and trim presentation between PLUS and MAX. Because colour, stitching and surface texture are difficult to judge from a specification table, inspect the actual car. A dealer may display a MAX interior while quoting a PLUS, so match the VIN or variant on the quotation to the vehicle you examine.
What both trims share
On the cited 2026 matrix, both PLUS and MAX show a 26 cm touchscreen, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and steering-mounted controls for audio, phone functions and the instrument cluster. Those shared features mean that moving to MAX is not necessary merely to obtain smartphone projection or the large screen.

Shared equipment can still be subject to an engine-specific qualification. The brochure marks some exterior items, including fog lamps and skid plates, for PureTech 110 configurations. Confirm the exact build sheet for a PureTech 110 manual, PureTech 110 automatic or any PLUS PureTech 82 before assuming that every line applies identically.

Do not infer performance or economy from the trim name
The available evidence does not establish an independent performance, ride, fuel-economy or reliability advantage for MAX. Since the two trims can use the same PureTech 110 manual or automatic powertrain, any difference in driving feel should be assessed on the same engine, transmission, tyre and vehicle configuration. A MAX badge by itself is not a test result.
Prices: the published figures and their limits
Citroën India announced the following introductory ex-showroom prices on 5 September 2025:

These figures are historical manufacturer introductory prices, not verified October 2026 prices. They are ex-showroom, so they exclude registration, insurance, taxes or fees collected on the road, accessories and any offer conditions. The ₹80,500 and ₹82,500 differences are arithmetic comparisons of those dated launch figures; they are not a current MAX premium.
For live variant and price information, check the Citroën Basalt X model page and the Citroën configurator, then request a dated, itemized quotation from the selling dealer. A quotation should show the same engine and transmission in both trims so that you can isolate the equipment difference.
How to calculate the real MAX premium
- Select the powertrain first. Choose PureTech 110 manual or PureTech 110 automatic if you want a direct PLUS-versus-MAX comparison. Record the exact model year and variant code.
- Capture two ex-showroom lines. Ask for PLUS and MAX prices on the same date, in the same city and with the same engine/transmission.
- Subtract the PLUS ex-showroom price from MAX. This is the current trim premium before taxes and ownership costs. Do not use the 2025 launch differences as a forecast.
- Compare mandatory charges separately. Registration, insurance, handling or statutory fees can differ because they are calculated from the vehicle price or selected policy, not because MAX has a particular speaker or wheel.
- Remove optional accessories from the trim calculation. Floor mats, paint protection, extended warranties and dealer accessories should be listed separately. An accessory bundle can make a quote look like a trim difference.
- Check discounts and finance conditions. A cash discount, exchange bonus or finance-linked offer can change the net gap. Ask for the eligibility condition and expiry date in writing.
This method answers the question most buyers actually have: “What will the extra equipment cost me today?” It also prevents a low PLUS NA quote from being presented as if it were the same mechanical specification as a MAX turbo.
Which trim makes sense for different buyers?
Choose PLUS when price and powertrain choice come first
- You want the lowest listed entry point and are considering the PureTech 82, which is not listed for MAX.
- You want the PureTech 110 manual or automatic but would rather keep the trim premium for registration, insurance or savings.
- The shared 26 cm screen, wireless phone integration and steering controls cover your needs.
- You do not care about factory-fitted alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, extra tweeters or a wireless charging pad.
PLUS is not a stripped-out vehicle in the cited matrix: it retains the large touchscreen and smartphone connectivity. Its value depends on the exact powertrain and the equipment attached to that powertrain, so inspect the build sheet rather than relying on the trim name alone.

Choose MAX when the added touch points will be used every day
- You specifically want the 16-inch Urban Diamond Cut alloy wheels and prefer not to add or replace wheels later.
- A leather-wrapped steering wheel and the MAX interior presentation matter to you on every drive.
- You regularly use a compatible phone and value an integrated wireless charging location.
- You would otherwise spend money adding audio hardware or changing the visual specification, and the dealer confirms the factory MAX equipment on your car.
MAX is easier to justify when several of those items matter together. Paying the full trim premium for only one rarely used feature is harder to defend, particularly after current on-road charges are added.

The automatic versions carry a separate price step in both trims. Compare PLUS Turbo AT with MAX Turbo AT, not PLUS Turbo MT with MAX Turbo AT. If your budget is fixed, the lower trim with the transmission you actually want may be more useful than a higher trim with a transmission compromise.

- Open the current model page. Use Citroën’s Basalt X page to see which variants and prices are currently advertised for your market.
- Build both cars in the configurator. In the official configurator, select the same engine and transmission, then record the displayed trim, colour, wheel and accessory selections.
- Ask for the accessible brochure or build sheet. Confirm whether fog lamps, skid plates and other qualified items apply to the selected powertrain.
- Inspect the wheels and tyres. Verify that the MAX demonstrator’s 16-inch Urban Diamond Cut wheels match the car being invoiced, and write the tyre specification into the quotation.
- Test the phone features. Pair your phone through wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, then place it on the MAX charging pad if that is part of your decision. Check that your case does not prevent charging.
- Listen to both audio systems. Use the same track and settings. Treat the six-speaker specification as hardware information, not a guaranteed sound-quality result.
- Compare interiors in daylight. Check the leatherette armrests, seat material, stitching and storage areas in the exact trim you will buy.
- Demand a dated, itemized quote. It should show ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes or statutory charges, accessories, discounts, finance conditions and delivery fees separately.
- Match the paperwork to the vehicle. Before payment, verify the variant code, engine, transmission, wheel specification and model year on the booking form and invoice.
Safety: what the available rating evidence does and does not say
The Global NCAP Basalt fact sheet revised in September 2025 identifies Basalt variants within its model-level rating scope. It does not establish separate Plus-versus-Max scores, nor does it support saying that MAX is safer than PLUS. Safety equipment can vary by local specification and powertrain, so check the manufacturer’s current safety list for the exact vehicle.
Use the rating as context for the Basalt model, not as a reason to assign a safety advantage to a trim whose documented additions are mainly wheels, cabin touch points, audio hardware and charging convenience. Confirm airbags, electronic aids, child-seat provisions and any other safety equipment on the current build sheet.
Ownership and maintenance questions
Trim choice does not by itself establish a different maintenance schedule, reliability outcome or long-term ownership cost. The available evidence contains no independent Plus-versus-Max ownership-cost statistic. Wheel and tyre replacement costs can differ with specification, so ask for the exact tyre size and replacement price if that is important to your budget.
Citroën lists Basalt maintenance plans on its official price and service page. The current plan price, duration, inclusions and eligibility should be confirmed directly because service terms can change. Request the plan document with your quotation and check whether consumables, scheduled labour, taxes and roadside assistance are included or excluded.

Questions to put in writing
- What is the model year and manufacturing month of the quoted car?
- Is the displayed price valid for my registration state and how long does the offer last?
- Which items are factory-fitted and which are dealer accessories?
- Are the wheels, tyres, spare and jack the same as shown on the demonstrator?
- What are the maintenance-plan coverage period, mileage limits and exclusions?
- Will the final invoice preserve the same engine, transmission and trim code shown in the configurator?
Common mistakes in a Basalt X Max-versus-Plus comparison
Using an old brochure as if it were current
The February 2025 YOU/PLUS/MAX material is not interchangeable with the April 2026 Basalt X matrix. Use the brochure and configurator that match the model year on your quote.
Calling a launch price a current price
The September 2025 figures are useful historical reference points only. A dealer’s October 2026 quote may be higher, lower or structured differently after price revisions, discounts and local charges.
Comparing unlike powertrains
A PLUS PureTech 82 and a MAX PureTech 110 automatic differ in engine and transmission as well as trim. Such a comparison cannot tell you what MAX equipment costs.
Assuming every brochure tick is universal
Items such as fog lamps and skid plates are marked with PureTech 110 qualifications in the matrix. Confirm applicability for the exact configuration.
Reading a speaker count as a sound test
Six speakers indicate two additional tweeters over the listed four-speaker PLUS system. They do not prove a measured improvement in audio quality.
Assuming the safety rating is trim-specific
The cited fact sheet is model-level context. It does not provide separate MAX and PLUS scores.
Leaving optional charges hidden in the premium
Accessories, insurance, finance products and registration can obscure the actual trim difference. Require separate line items.

Buy PLUS if you want the broadest listed powertrain choice, including PureTech 82, and the shared 26 cm connectivity package without paying for equipment you may not use. Buy MAX if the 16-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, different interior presentation, two extra tweeters and wireless charger are worth the current, itemized premium to you. On the historical September 2025 launch figures, the matched turbo-premium was ₹80,500 for the manual and ₹82,500 for the automatic, but those numbers must not be treated as October 2026 prices. Verify the live configuration, exact fitment and full on-road quote before booking.
