For the latest India-market versions, the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is the value choice, while the 350cc KTM 390 Duke is the higher-priced option with slightly higher quoted peak output. Bajaj’s 21 September 2026 announcement lists the updated NS400Z at ₹1,90,015 ex-showroom Delhi; KTM/Bajaj’s 20 April 2026 announcement lists the 350cc 390 Duke at ₹2,77,268. That is an ₹87,253 ex-showroom gap, before registration, insurance, taxes, dealer charges or finance.
The comparison must be made between the updated 349cc NS400Z and the 350cc entry KTM 390 Duke. The KTM 390 Duke family also includes a separate 399cc 390 Duke R, listed at ₹3,39,001 ex-showroom Delhi in the April announcement. It is not the same motorcycle or trim. No supplied source establishes a controlled, current back-to-back test of the two exact versions, so the sensible buying decision depends on your budget, confirmed local equipment, riding position, service access and a test ride.

Which motorcycle is better for you?
Choose the Pulsar NS400Z if your priority is the lowest official entry price and a substantial new electronics package. Choose the 350cc KTM 390 Duke if you are prepared to spend more for its slightly higher published power and torque figures and prefer its fit after an exact-trim test ride. Neither manufacturer specification proves that one will accelerate faster in every gear, handle better, stop shorter, use less fuel or cost less to own.
| Question | Better starting point | Why |

Make sure you are comparing the right KTM
The name “390 Duke” now covers more than one specification. This article compares the updated 349cc Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z with the 350cc KTM 390 Duke entry variant announced in April 2026. The same KTM/Bajaj announcement says existing 399cc models continue and lists a 399cc KTM 390 Duke R at ₹3,39,001 ex-showroom Delhi.
Older launch articles and comparison tables can therefore give you a different price, engine figure or equipment list. Before accepting a dealer quote, ask for the exact displacement, model year, variant name and written equipment list. Do not treat a 399cc Duke R specification as proof of what the 350cc entry motorcycle includes.
Why older NS400Z numbers appear online
Bajaj’s April 2026 material described an earlier NS400Z at ₹1,80,092 and 40.6 PS. The September 2026 update supersedes that snapshot for the current comparison: ₹1,90,015, 40 PS at 9,000 rpm and 33 Nm at 7,500 rpm. A page showing the earlier figures may still be describing an earlier announcement rather than the updated motorcycle.

The latest Bajaj page is dated 21 September 2026, while its release body says “Pune, 01 October 2026.” Those are the dates shown in the source; there is no confirmed rollout explanation to add. Use the announcement as the current specification reference and verify actual stock and delivery timing with a local dealer.
Price: the NS400Z’s largest advantage
| Model and version | Official Delhi ex-showroom price | Announcement date |
|---|---|---|
| Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z, updated 349cc | ₹1,90,015 | 21 September 2026 |
| KTM 390 Duke, 350cc entry variant | ₹2,77,268 | 20 April 2026 |
| KTM 390 Duke R, 399cc (reference only) | ₹3,39,001 | 20 April 2026 |
The arithmetic difference between the two entry versions is ₹87,253 (₹2,77,268 − ₹1,90,015). It is an ex-showroom Delhi difference only. It does not establish an ₹87,253 difference in on-road cost, monthly payment, fuel spending or maintenance. Registration rules, insurance premiums, accessories, financing rates and dealer fees can materially alter the amount you actually pay.
How to use the price gap
- Request itemised on-road quotations for both exact variants in your city.
- Check whether each quote includes registration, insurance, handling charges, mandatory accessories and any current offer.
- Compare the cash price and the total amount payable under finance, not only the monthly instalment.
- Keep a reserve for riding gear, the first service and consumables rather than spending the entire saving on accessories.
Because the quoted dates differ by several months, confirm that the KTM price has not changed locally and that the NS400Z quote corresponds to the September update rather than leftover earlier stock.
What the headline gap can and cannot buy
₹87,253 is large enough to change the purchase plan, but it is not a guaranteed saving in your final ownership budget. You could direct part of it toward a certified helmet, jacket, gloves, riding boots, insurance excess or a cash buffer for unexpected repairs. Alternatively, a financed buyer may find that interest erodes some of the apparent difference. Ask the lender for the processing fee, interest rate, tenure, down payment and total repayment for each motorcycle. A lower monthly payment can still mean a higher total outlay if the loan runs longer.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not let a dealer fold accessories into the finance quote without an itemised list. Compare like for like: the same insurance type, registration category, accessories and loan term. If one outlet is quoting an older motorcycle from stock, request the model year and vehicle identification details before comparing numbers.
Engine output and what the numbers do—and do not—tell you
| Published specification | Pulsar NS400Z (updated) | KTM 390 Duke (350cc entry) |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 349cc | 350cc |
| Peak power | 40 PS at 9,000 rpm | 41.5 PS |
| Peak torque | 33 Nm at 7,500 rpm | 33.5 Nm |
| Difference on quoted peaks | KTM ahead by 1.5 PS and 0.5 Nm | |
On the published peak figures, the KTM has a modest advantage: 1.5 PS and 0.5 Nm. The releases do not provide a directly comparable torque curve, gearing, kerb weight, launch control strategy, acceleration test or rolling performance. Peak values alone cannot tell you which engine feels stronger at low rpm, pulls better with a passenger, runs smoother in traffic or is easier to control on a wet road.
During a test ride, pay attention to throttle response when pulling away, clutch effort, heat in slow traffic, vibration at your normal cruising speed, gear spacing and how the engine responds after an upshift. Treat those observations as your own fit assessment, not as a substitute for a controlled test that is not established here.
How to interpret the small output difference
The KTM’s 1.5-PS lead is about 3.75% of the Bajaj’s quoted 40 PS, while the 0.5-Nm torque lead is about 1.5% of 33 Nm. Those calculations illustrate that the paper advantage is modest; they do not predict an equivalent acceleration advantage. Rider weight, fuel load, gearing, tyre condition, shift timing, temperature and road gradient can matter more in a short ride. A buyer who mainly commutes may value smooth response and manageable heat over a peak figure reached near the top of the rev range.

Bajaj’s September update adds a 5-inch TFT instrument display with a set of functions that are specifically named in the announcement:
- Google Maps mirroring
- Music Control
- Document Storage
- Lap Timer
- Four ride modes
- Traction control
- Dual-channel ABS
- Electronic throttle body
- Type-C USB port
- Panic Brake Alert
The practical value depends on how well the phone connection works, whether your handset and mount position remain usable in rain, and whether you prefer a simple display. Confirm the included phone interface, navigation requirements, software compatibility and warranty treatment at handover; the announcement names the functions but does not establish every operating condition.
What is confirmed for the 350cc KTM—and what is not
The April KTM/Bajaj release says the 350cc variant retains the range’s technology and ergonomics, but it does not itemise every display function, rider aid or switchgear feature for that exact trim. A Gen-3 399cc platform release lists ride modes, motorcycle traction control and cornering ABS, but those details should not automatically be carried over to the 350cc entry motorcycle.
Ask the dealer to demonstrate the exact display, riding modes, ABS behavior, traction-control adjustment, charging port and connectivity features on the motorcycle you will receive. If a feature is not written in the 350cc variant’s official specification or shown on that bike, treat it as unconfirmed.

Connectivity questions worth asking
Before booking the Bajaj for its TFT, pair your own phone rather than relying only on a salesperson’s demonstration. Ask whether navigation mirroring uses a dedicated application, whether music controls work with your handset, how documents are stored and whether the USB-C port is intended for charging only. Find out where the phone must be mounted and whether the connection resumes automatically after the ignition is cycled. These are practical acceptance checks, not claims that a particular function will work identically on every phone.
For the KTM, request a written feature sheet for the 350cc motorcycle. A display that looks similar to the 399cc model does not establish identical software, menus or rider aids. Photograph the instrument screen and switchgear on the test bike so the delivered motorcycle can be checked against it.
Fuel tank and mileage: useful context, not a verdict
An Autocar India comparison table lists a 12-litre tank and user-reported 32 kmpl for its NS400Z entry, and a 15-litre tank and user-reported 28 kmpl for its KTM 390 Duke Gen 3 Standard entry. These figures are secondary, user-reported values rather than official economy claims or controlled tests, and the table may represent earlier variants.
| Secondary table value | NS400Z entry | KTM 390 Duke Gen 3 Standard entry | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel capacity | 12 L | 15 L | Contextual table values; confirm current specifications |
| Mileage | 32 kmpl, user-reported | 28 kmpl, user-reported | Not an official or controlled back-to-back result |
A larger tank can reduce refuelling frequency, but it may also affect the motorcycle’s mass and dimensions; the supplied figures do not establish range because real range depends on riding conditions and usable tank volume. Do not use the reported mileage to calculate a guaranteed monthly fuel bill. Record your own fuel consumption over several fills after purchase if economy matters.

For a fair personal comparison, fill both motorcycles to the same level, reset the trip meter, ride a similar mix of traffic and open road, and calculate fuel used at the next refill. Keep tyre pressures and riding load consistent. That exercise will describe your route and riding style, not a universal laboratory result, but it is more useful for your budget than a single online mileage number.
Ride, braking and ownership: what remains unproven
There is no current independent back-to-back result in the consulted material for handling, comfort, braking distance, reliability, service cost, resale value or long-term fuel economy. Manufacturer output and equipment claims cannot establish those outcomes.
Fit and ergonomics
- Place both feet naturally at a stop and check whether the bars force your wrists into an uncomfortable angle.
- Ride through a slow U-turn, a speed-breaker and an open stretch to assess steering effort and posture.
- Check mirror visibility, reach to the levers and whether the seat remains comfortable after at least 20–30 minutes.
- If you carry a passenger, test the pillion seat, grab points and suspension response with the intended load.
Braking and rider aids
Both motorcycles should be evaluated on the exact delivered trim, with safe space and legal conditions. Ask which ABS mode and traction-control settings are fitted, then note how naturally the systems intervene. Do not infer stopping distance from the presence of dual-channel ABS or from a different 399cc model’s cornering-ABS description.
Service and reliability questions
Ask each authorised outlet for the service interval, labour schedule, consumable prices, warranty terms, roadside assistance and typical parts lead time. The supplied announcements do not establish comparative maintenance totals or reliability, so a confident claim that either motorcycle is cheaper or more durable would go beyond the evidence.
Dealer access can outweigh a specification advantage
Visit the outlet that would actually service the motorcycle, not only the showroom where you take a test ride. Ask how bookings are made, how long routine work normally takes, whether consumables are stocked and where warranty work is authorised. The answer may differ between cities and outlets, so it cannot be generalized from the manufacturer price announcement. If you live far from a KTM or Bajaj workshop, include travel time and the availability of roadside assistance in your decision.

Buy the NS400Z when budget and connected equipment lead
The NS400Z is the logical first shortlist if ₹87,253 of Delhi ex-showroom price matters, you want the newly itemized 5-inch TFT functions, or the four ride modes and traction-control package appeal to you. Verify that the dealer’s motorcycle is the September-updated version and that the quoted equipment is present.
Buy the 350cc 390 Duke when the KTM’s feel justifies the premium
The KTM is worth considering when its riding position, engine response, controls and dealer support suit you better and the 1.5-PS, 0.5-Nm published advantage matters to your priorities. The premium should be accepted only after comparing total on-road prices and confirming the exact entry-trim equipment; the higher peak figures alone do not guarantee a faster or more enjoyable ride.
Do not choose the 399cc 390 Duke R by accident
If a salesperson quotes ₹3,39,001 or describes a 399cc engine, you are discussing the 390 Duke R reference model, not the 350cc entry variant used in this comparison. Recheck the invoice, VIN/model designation and specification sheet before paying a booking amount.
Simple scenarios
- First performance motorcycle on a strict budget: start with the NS400Z, then see whether its ergonomics and controls suit you before treating the price as decisive.
- Rider upgrading for a particular KTM feel: test the 350cc Duke back to back with the Bajaj and accept the premium only if you can identify a real advantage in your use.
- Frequent touring: compare the actual tank specification, seat comfort, luggage options and dealer support; the secondary 12-L and 15-L figures alone do not prove range.
- Technology-focused commuter: verify the NS400Z’s phone pairing and navigation functions with your own device, while requesting the KTM’s exact 350cc feature list.
Exact-trim test-ride checklist
- Photograph the model badge, displacement information and instrument cluster on each test motorcycle.
- Confirm the ex-showroom price date, city and variant in writing.
- Pair the phone only if connectivity is important, then test navigation mirroring, music controls and charging on the NS400Z.
- Cycle through every available ride mode and note throttle response, traction-control behavior and ABS feel in a safe area.
- Ride the same route on both bikes, including traffic, a rough patch, a U-turn and an open section.
- Ask for itemised insurance, registration, accessories, finance interest and delivery charges.
- Get warranty, service schedule and parts-support answers from the outlet that will actually maintain your motorcycle.
- Read the booking form for cancellation terms, promised delivery date, quoted model year and any compulsory accessory package.
- At handover, match the VIN and variant designation to the quotation and inspect the display, USB port, switches, tyres and visible bodywork before signing acceptance.
Manufacturer positioning, kept in context
In Bajaj’s September update, Sarang Kanade, Chief Business Officer, Two-wheeler Business Unit, said the NS400Z was built around an engaging performance experience and that the update adds technology for convenience and connectivity. In the April KTM/Bajaj release, Manik Nangia, President, Probiking, described the KTM 390 Duke and 390 Adventure as aspirational motorcycles and said the expansion was intended to make that aspiration available to more riders. These statements explain each company’s positioning; they are not independent measurements of performance, value or ownership cost.
Bottom line for 2026 India buyers
The updated Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z wins the clear price-and-feature argument in the cited announcements: ₹1,90,015 ex-showroom Delhi and a newly specified connected TFT package. The 350cc KTM 390 Duke asks ₹2,77,268 and publishes slightly higher peak output at 41.5 PS and 33.5 Nm. That makes the choice a trade-off, not a universal ranking.
Get local on-road quotations, verify the exact trims and test ride both before deciding. Select the NS400Z if its lower cost and documented electronics solve your priorities; select the KTM if its real-world fit and riding character justify the premium to you. Keep the 399cc 390 Duke R separate from both decisions.

No. The releases do not provide comparable torque curves, gearing, weight or acceleration tests. Test throttle response, heat, vibration, clutch feel, gear spacing and ergonomics on both exact trims before paying the premium.
What should I verify before booking either motorcycle?
Obtain an itemised local on-road quote, confirm model year, displacement and variant in writing, check the equipment list, compare finance total repayment, and ask the servicing outlet about warranty, intervals, consumables, parts and roadside assistance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The updated NS400Z is the lower-cost, clearly documented technology choice at ₹1,90,015 ex-showroom Delhi. The 350cc KTM 390 Duke costs ₹87,253 more in the cited Delhi snapshots and quotes 1.5 PS and 0.5 Nm more.
