Choose the Bajaj Pulsar N250 when your priority is the lowest entry price. Choose the Hero Xtreme 250R when you are willing to pay more for the higher published output, liquid cooling and a six-speed gearbox. Neither motorcycle can be declared the universal winner for mileage, comfort or ownership support from the available evidence.
Use the specifications below as a shortlist, then obtain current on-road quotations in your city, confirm the exact variant equipment and ride both motorcycles in the traffic and roads where you will actually use them.

The short answer
The Pulsar N250 is the price-led choice. Bajaj’s product page displayed a Delhi ex-showroom starting price of ₹1,42,202 when the comparison was captured. That is a location-specific snapshot, not a promise of what you will pay after registration, insurance, taxes, accessories or dealer charges.
The Xtreme 250R is the output-led choice. Hero publishes more peak power and torque, liquid cooling and six forward gears. Its higher specification does not automatically make it better for every rider: the price difference, local service access, traffic behaviour and test-ride comfort still decide whether those advantages matter to you.

Published specifications side by side
These are manufacturer figures where an official product page supplied them. The comparison pages are useful for identifying differences, but their price and mileage snapshots are not equivalent laboratory or road tests.
| Specification | Bajaj Pulsar N250 | Hero Xtreme 250R |
|---|---|---|
| Engine displacement | 249.07 cc | 249.03 cc |
| Peak power | 18 kW (24.5 PS) at 8,750 rpm | 30 PS at 9,250 rpm |
| Peak torque | 21.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm | 25 Nm at 7,250 rpm |
| Cooling system listed by the manufacturer | Oil-cooled, according to comparison listings | Liquid-cooled |
| Transmission listed by the manufacturer or comparison listing | Five-speed gearbox | Six-speed constant-mesh gearbox |
| Kerb mass | The surfaced material does not provide a comparable official figure | 167.7 kg |
| ABS specification | Confirm equipment on the exact variant and model year | Dual-channel switchable ABS with two modes, as specified by Hero MotoCorp |
| Price evidence | ₹1,42,202 Delhi ex-showroom starting price displayed on Bajaj’s product page when surfaced | Third-party pages show a higher price, but their snapshots do not establish one aligned current gap |
The displacement figures are effectively identical on paper. The meaningful mechanical separation is the engine output, cooling approach and number of ratios, not the extra fraction of a cubic centimetre.
What the power and torque difference means
Higher output on the Xtreme 250R
Hero’s published figures put the Xtreme 250R ahead at the top of the specification sheet. More peak power can provide stronger acceleration once the engine is operating near the rev range where that power is produced. The higher torque figure can make overtaking or climbing gradients easier, but the result also depends on gearing, throttle calibration, rider weight, tyre condition and how closely the engine stays in its useful rev band.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not interpret a peak figure as a guarantee that one bike will feel faster in every situation. Peak power arrives at a specified engine speed, and maximum torque arrives at another. A motorcycle that feels more responsive at 3,000–5,000 rpm may be easier in traffic even if its headline peak is lower.
The N250’s figures remain substantial for daily use
The Pulsar N250 is still a 249cc single-cylinder motorcycle with a published 24.5 PS output. That is enough for a broad range of commuting and weekend riding, provided the ergonomics, gearing and suspension suit you. The price-led case is therefore not a claim that the Bajaj is underpowered; it is a recognition that its specification sheet gives up output to the Hero in exchange for a lower starting-price position.
How to compare performance on a test ride
Use the same route and the same riding conditions for both bikes. Check smooth pull-away from a stop, acceleration from a mid-range speed in a higher gear, and the ease of making a quick overtake without excessive downshifting. Repeat with a passenger if that is a normal part of your use. These observations tell you more about suitability than a peak-power number alone.

Cooling and gearbox: the hardware distinction
Oil cooling versus liquid cooling
Comparison listings identify the N250 as oil-cooled, while Hero’s product information specifies liquid cooling for the Xtreme 250R. Liquid cooling uses coolant and a radiator to control engine temperature more precisely under sustained load. Oil cooling also removes heat, but the systems have different layouts, maintenance checks and operating characteristics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a buyer, the practical questions are whether the temperature remains comfortable in your traffic, how the fan behaves in slow-moving conditions, and what the service schedule requires. Do not assume that liquid cooling alone guarantees lower running costs or better reliability; it is one part of the engine design.
Five speeds versus six
A six-speed constant-mesh gearbox gives the Hero an additional ratio to spread acceleration and cruising work. Closely spaced lower gears can help keep the engine in its useful band, while a taller top gear may reduce revs at a steady highway speed. The benefit depends on the actual ratios and final drive, which are not supplied in the comparison material.
The N250’s five-speed arrangement is mechanically simpler in terms of the number of ratios. During your ride, pay attention to whether first gear feels too short in traffic, whether you are searching for another gear on an open road, and how often you need to shift on an incline. Those are real-world indicators of whether the extra ratio matters to you.
Price: compare the amount you will actually pay
What the published Bajaj price tells you
Bajaj’s Delhi ex-showroom display of ₹1,42,202 was the starting-price evidence available for the N250 at the time it was surfaced. Ex-showroom pricing excludes the on-road items that commonly dominate a buyer’s final bill. It can also change with a model-year update, a regional tax change, an offer or a dealer’s stock position.
Why the Hero price gap should not be quoted as an exact number
Third-party comparison pages place the Xtreme 250R above the Pulsar N250, but the pages do not present a single, synchronized price snapshot. Their locations, update dates, variants and included charges can differ. Quoting a precise rupee gap from those pages would imply a level of certainty the evidence does not support.

Request an itemised on-road quote
- Ask a Bajaj dealer and a Hero dealer in the same city for the exact variant and model year.
- Request separate lines for ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, statutory fees, accessories, extended warranty and handling or documentation charges.
- Ask whether the quote includes a temporary offer, exchange bonus or finance-linked discount, and record the expiry date.
- Compare the final payable amount, not the headline discount. A lower sticker price can disappear after insurance or accessory additions.
- Confirm the booking amount, cancellation terms and expected delivery date before paying.
Use the same insurance coverage and accessory list for both motorcycles. Otherwise you will be comparing different bundles rather than different bikes.
Safety equipment and exact-variant checks
Hero specifies “Dual Channel Switchable ABS with 2 modes” for the Xtreme 250R. Switchability and mode behaviour should be demonstrated by the dealer, and you should confirm that the wording applies to the exact variant being offered rather than a different trim or model year.
For the Pulsar N250, verify the ABS configuration on the physical motorcycle and the current specification sheet. Ask whether both wheels receive ABS, whether any mode selection is available, and whether the equipment changes between colours or variants. Do not infer safety equipment from a photograph or an older comparison listing.

Mileage, comfort and traffic behaviour: what is not settled
Fuel economy figures are not a matched test
Comparison pages display different mileage labels, and the surfaced figures do not come from a controlled test using the same route, rider, speed, fuel and measurement method. Treat them as website snapshots, not as a promise of comparative real-world economy.
If fuel cost is central to your decision, record your own results after purchase using the same fuel station and a full-tank-to-full-tank method. For the buying decision, ask owners in your city about typical traffic conditions and service intervals, but keep anecdotal reports separate from measured results.

Ergonomics must be judged on your body
The available material does not establish a universal comfort winner. Sit on both motorcycles wearing the gear you normally use. Check reach to the handlebar, knee bend, seat pressure, steering effort at walking speed and whether your wrists carry weight after 20 minutes.

Pillion use can change the choice
Bring the person who will actually ride behind you. Check the seat length, grab-rail position, footpeg height, heat reaching the passenger and ease of mounting. A motorcycle that feels ideal alone may be less suitable when carrying a passenger or luggage.
Which bike fits each buyer?
| Your priority | More logical starting point | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest initial price | Pulsar N250 | Current city on-road quote and exact variant |
| Higher published output | Xtreme 250R | Whether the stronger response is useful on your route |
| Liquid cooling and six gears | Xtreme 250R | Cooling-system service requirements and gearbox feel |
| Frequent passenger use | Ride both with your passenger | Seat, grab rail, heat and suspension comfort |
| Lowest fuel cost | No evidence-based winner | Obtain local owner data and measure your own usage after purchase |
| Easy local servicing | No evidence-based winner | Call the nearest authorised workshops and ask about capacity, parts and waiting times |
A repeatable test-ride procedure
- Start cold if possible. Ask the showroom not to warm the engine before you arrive. Note starting behaviour, idle stability and any unusual noise.
- Check the controls while stationary. Set the mirrors, operate the clutch, apply both brakes and turn the handlebar from lock to lock. Make sure your feet can reach the ground confidently.
- Ride through stop-start traffic. Evaluate clutch effort, low-speed throttle smoothness, steering weight and heat around your legs.
- Test the mid-range. On a safe open stretch, accelerate in the same gear from a moderate speed. Note whether the motorcycle pulls cleanly or demands a downshift.
- Use every gear. On the Hero, determine whether the sixth ratio is useful at the speeds you normally travel. On the Bajaj, note whether five ratios leave you wanting a taller cruising gear.
- Brake progressively. Try gentle, medium and firm braking in a controlled area. Look for predictable lever response and stable tracking.
- Ride over representative surfaces. Include speed breakers, broken patches and a bend similar to your regular route. Record impacts through the seat and handlebar rather than relying on showroom impressions.
- Repeat with a passenger or luggage. If that is part of your routine, do not postpone this check until after purchase.
Write down impressions immediately after each ride. A short worksheet prevents the second motorcycle from benefiting simply because it was ridden later or on a better road.
Dealer and service checks before booking
Local support is a purchase factor that the surfaced specifications cannot settle. Call or visit the nearest authorised service centres for both brands and ask:
- How many days ahead routine service appointments are currently booked.
- Whether common wear parts and accident-repair panels are normally stocked.
- Which workshop handles warranty diagnosis and how warranty claims are scheduled.
- What the first service includes and which consumables are charged separately.
- Whether roadside assistance is included for the exact variant and purchase date.
Ask for the written service schedule and warranty terms rather than relying on a sales explanation. Keep the documents with your quotation so that an attractive discount does not obscure recurring costs.

Prices and offers change quickly. The Delhi figure shown for the N250 is a dated snapshot tied to one location and an ex-showroom starting display. Recheck both manufacturers’ current pages and obtain dealer quotes immediately before purchase.

Mixing variants
ABS, colours, accessories and model-year updates can alter the equipment or price. Put the exact variant name on both quotations and photograph the specification label on the motorcycle you inspect.
Calling website mileage a test result
Different pages use different labels and conditions. A mileage number without a common route and method cannot establish which motorcycle is more economical for you.
Choosing by power alone
Peak output is relevant, but traffic smoothness, seat comfort, reach, braking confidence and dealer support determine whether you enjoy the motorcycle every day. A stronger specification is not a substitute for a suitable riding position.

Ignoring the final bill
Compare insurance, registration, accessories and finance charges on an equal basis. The ex-showroom figure is only one component of the amount leaving your account.
Decision checklist
- Have you obtained same-day, itemised on-road quotes in your city?
- Did you confirm the exact ABS and equipment specification of each variant?
- Did you ride both motorcycles on traffic, open-road and uneven surfaces?
- Did your regular passenger try both seats?
- Did you compare clutch, gearbox, braking and heat behaviour rather than only acceleration?
- Did you call the nearest authorised workshops about appointments and parts?
- Are promotional prices, finance conditions and delivery dates written into the quotation?
If you can answer yes to each question, the choice usually becomes straightforward: select the Pulsar N250 when keeping the purchase price down is the decisive requirement; select the Xtreme 250R when its higher published output, liquid cooling and six-speed transmission justify the additional outlay for your riding.
