Short answer: there is no single winner until you identify the exact Pulsar trim. Bajaj currently lists a 2-valve base N160 alongside the 4-valve N160 S and N160 SS. Against the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V, the N160 S/SS has the higher claimed peak power, while the Hero combines a clearly specified dual-channel ABS package, 37 mm KYB USD fork and seven-step rear-shock adjustment. Compare the Hero with an N160 S or SS—not the base 2V bike—and obtain same-city on-road quotes before deciding.
The most reliable choice comes from matching equipment to your use, then riding both motorcycles back to back. Published specifications are manufacturer claims; the supplied sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head road test or a directly comparable mileage result.

Why “Pulsar N160 4V” needs a trim check
Bajaj’s current product listing separates the range into three configurations: a base N160 with a 2-valve engine, and N160 S and N160 SS versions with the newer 4-valve engine. The S and SS are the versions relevant to a title that says “N160 4V.” The base bike’s claimed output is different, so treating every N160 as the same motorcycle can reverse the buying conclusion. Verify the exact model and equipment on Bajaj’s current Pulsar N160 page and on the dealer’s quotation.
A frequently surfaced comparison page does not make that distinction. Autocar India labels its Pulsar “Dual Channel Split Seat USD” and lists a 2-valve, 16-hp, 14.65-Nm configuration. That table is useful as evidence that older or different N160 specifications circulate online, but it is not a safe specification sheet for the current N160 S/SS 4V. Its Hero entry is also expressed in hp, whereas Hero’s own page uses PS and kW. Read the comparison at Autocar India only with this trim caveat.

Engine performance: power is not the whole answer
Pulsar N160 S and SS
Bajaj claims 18.5 PS at 9,500 rpm from the 164.9 cc 4-valve, oil-cooled engine in both the S and SS. That is the strongest published peak-power figure among the correctly matched 4-valve versions. The S and SS also use ride-by-wire or intelligent-throttle hardware and Crawl Tech. The SS adds responsive traction control, so its electronics package is not identical to the S.
The base N160 is a different proposition: Bajaj lists a 2-valve engine rated at 16 PS. If a dealer or listing simply says “N160” without the S or SS suffix, ask to see the variant name on the quotation and the motorcycle itself before comparing performance or price.

Hero Xtreme 160R 4V
Hero specifies a 163.2 cc, 4-stroke air-oil-cooled 4-valve engine producing 16.9 PS (12.4 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 14.6 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The updated 2026 brochure also lists fuel injection and a 5-speed transmission. Hero quotes 0–60 km/h in 4.5 seconds in that brochure; this is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result. The specification is documented in Hero’s Xtreme 160R 4V product page and the updated 2026 brochure.

How to interpret the claims
On paper, an N160 S or SS has about 1.6 PS more peak power than the Hero. That does not prove it will feel quicker in every situation: gearing, rider weight, throttle calibration, tyre condition and the engine’s response below the peak-rpm point all matter. The cited current Bajaj page does not provide a torque figure that can be compared directly with Hero’s 14.6 Nm, so do not import the 14.65-Nm number from the mixed-trim Autocar table and call it the current 4V Pulsar’s output.
Use the figures to set expectations, then ride each bike from walking pace through the mid-range and onto a safe, legal faster section. Note how cleanly each responds when you reopen the throttle in a higher gear, rather than judging only a brief full-throttle launch.
Brakes, suspension and electronic aids
Where the Hero has a clearly documented hardware package
The Xtreme 160R 4V specification lists a 37 mm KYB upside-down fork, a seven-step adjustable monoshock and dual-channel ABS. Its 276 mm front and 220 mm rear petal discs are also explicitly listed. The adjustment range gives a rider or technician a way to alter rear-support feel for solo riding or a regular pillion, although the correct setting still has to be established by riding the motorcycle.
What changes between Pulsar trims
Bajaj lists 37 mm USD forks on the N160 S and SS, compared with 33 mm USD suspension on the base N160. The SS specification adds dual-channel ABS, a radial rear tyre and adjustable levers. It also adds responsive traction control. The S shares the 4-valve engine and the ride-by-wire/intelligent-throttle and Crawl Tech features, but the cited page does not establish every brake and electronics detail for every market. Confirm whether the S you are being quoted has the ABS configuration you require.

Because both manufacturers use trim-dependent equipment, a headline such as “N160 versus Xtreme” is too broad for a safety comparison. Compare the actual motorcycle’s ABS channels, warning lights, tyre specification, fork diameter and lever adjustability. Do not assume that an S, SS and base N160 carry the same hardware.
Everyday dimensions and rider fit
Hero publishes an 800 mm seat height, a 12-litre fuel tank and 147.5 kg kerb weight for the Xtreme 160R 4V. Those numbers help a shorter rider judge standstill reach and help a commuter estimate how the bike may feel while manoeuvring, but inseam length and seat shape matter as much as the nominal height.
The cited current Bajaj page does not provide a directly comparable set of seat-height, kerb-weight and tank-capacity figures for the N160 S, SS and base bike. That is a reason to sit on the exact showroom motorcycle rather than infer fit from photographs or from another N160 year. Check whether both feet can be placed securely, whether the handlebar forces your wrists into an awkward angle, and whether you can move the bike backwards on a slope.

Displays, navigation and ride modes
The N160 range is listed with four ride modes, but their operation and availability should be demonstrated on the exact motorcycle. The S and SS use the intelligent-throttle system and Crawl Tech. On the SS, Bajaj specifically lists a 5-inch TFT with Google Maps mirroring, responsive traction control, adjustable levers and a radial rear tyre. If navigation display or electronic intervention is a priority, the SS is the relevant Pulsar to inspect—not the base N160.
The Hero page cited for this comparison establishes the engine, cycle parts, brakes, dimensions and ABS package, but it does not establish a directly equivalent connected-display feature set. Ask the dealer to show the production display, switchgear and any phone-pairing functions on the bike being sold. Avoid treating an accessory, an optional feature or a different model year as standard equipment.

Hero’s official page lets visitors select a state and city, and the displayed variant price changes with that selection. Hero also states that on-road cost depends on city, RTO charges, insurance and accessories. A default location on a web page is therefore not a national price and should not be used as your budget.

Use an itemised quote
- Write the exact model, trim, model year and colour at the top of both quotes.
- Request ex-showroom price, RTO or registration charges, insurance, accessories, handling or documentation fees and every discount as separate lines.
- Ask whether the quoted motorcycle is the same ABS and display specification you inspected.
- Compare the final payable amount, not a low ex-showroom headline.
- Keep the written quotes while you complete the test rides; prices and promotions can change between visits.
Which one should you buy?
Choose an N160 S or SS when peak output and Pulsar-specific electronics lead
If your main objective is the highest manufacturer-claimed peak power in this comparison, the N160 S or SS is the logical shortlist. The SS is the stronger feature match when you specifically want a 5-inch navigation-capable TFT, traction control, adjustable levers, a radial rear tyre and dual-channel ABS. The S can make sense when you want the 4-valve engine and 37 mm fork but do not need every SS addition; confirm its exact safety and display equipment before paying.
Choose the Hero when its standard hardware and ergonomics fit you better
The Hero is the simpler specification to identify: its published package includes dual-channel ABS, a 37 mm KYB USD fork, seven-step rear-shock adjustment, 800 mm seat, 12-litre tank and 147.5 kg kerb weight. Riders who value that clearly stated braking and suspension hardware, or who fit the Hero’s seating position more naturally, have a defensible reason to choose it even though its peak-power claim is lower than the 4-valve Pulsar S/SS.
Choose the base N160 only deliberately
The base N160 is not a cheaper name for the 4-valve S/SS. Bajaj lists it with a 2-valve engine and 16 PS, plus the smaller 33 mm USD suspension. Buy it only after confirming that its price and equipment meet your needs; otherwise you may leave the showroom with the wrong motorcycle for the comparison you intended.
A same-day test-ride method that produces a useful answer
- Verify identity. Photograph or write down the variant badge, engine description and displayed equipment. Make sure the Pulsar is S or SS if you are evaluating a 4V model.
- Set controls. Adjust mirrors and levers where available, select the normal ride mode, and check that the ABS warning light behaves as the dealer explains.
- Ride slowly first. Use a car park or quiet lane to evaluate clutch take-up, steering lock, throttle smoothness and balance. These impressions are more useful than a single launch.
- Use the same route. Ride both bikes over the same broken surface, speed humps and open section, with similar fuel load and rider clothing where practical.
- Check braking progressively. Make several straight-line stops at modest speeds, leaving a safety margin and obeying local rules. Note lever effort, stability and how naturally the ABS intervention feels.
- Try the useful engine range. Test low-speed roll-on, an overtaking-style mid-range acceleration and a steady higher-speed cruise only where legal. Do not treat the Hero’s brochure acceleration figure as a stopwatch result from your ride.
- Repeat with the intended passenger. Check reach to the ground, rear-seat comfort, suspension support and ease of moving the bike before and after the passenger gets on.
- Match the quote. Immediately record the exact on-road price and equipment of the ridden motorcycle so a sales quotation cannot silently switch trims.
Claims you should not make from these specifications
- Do not declare a mileage winner. Hero uses general promotional mileage language, while the cited Bajaj page does not provide a directly comparable figure. The mixed-trim Autocar table is not a safe basis for a current 4V mileage verdict.
- Do not call brochure acceleration an independent test. The 0–60 km/h figure is Hero’s own 2026 brochure claim.
- Do not transfer base-N160 numbers to the S or SS. The 2-valve 16-PS base bike is mechanically distinct from the 4-valve versions.
- Do not infer handling superiority from fork diameter alone. Tyres, spring rates, damping, setup and rider fit determine the result on your roads.
- Do not use a generic national price. City, RTO, insurance and accessories change the on-road total.
Verdict
For a rider who wants the strongest published performance claim and the most extensive connected electronics, compare the Pulsar N160 SS directly with the Hero and choose the SS only if its local quote and riding position justify the premium. For a rider prioritising a clearly documented dual-channel ABS and adjustable suspension package, the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V is the easier specification to verify. The N160 S sits between those choices, offering the 4-valve engine and 37 mm fork without the SS feature list.
Whichever direction you take, the final decision should be between an exact N160 S or SS and an exact Xtreme 160R 4V, with matching city quotes and back-to-back rides. A comparison that leaves the base 2-valve N160 unnamed is not answering the 4V question.
