The Hero has the higher published peak-power figure, while the specified Bajaj has marginally higher published peak torque. Your better choice depends on the exact trim, local on-road price, riding position, suspension and braking priorities, and how each motorcycle feels on your test ride.
Start by confirming which N160 you are comparing
Bajaj’s current range includes a core Pulsar N160 2V alongside newer N160 S and N160 SS 4V configurations. Their electronic and display equipment can differ, so a listing that simply says “N160” may not describe the motorcycle you are actually being offered. The specifications below apply to the N160 2V Dual Channel Split Seat USD configuration identified by Bajaj.

Before paying a booking amount, ask the dealer to write the complete variant name on the quotation and match the frame, equipment and engine description with the motorcycle’s documents. Bajaj’s support area also lists separate manuals for the N160, Dual Channel ABS USD and Twin Disc versions. Use the manual for your exact model when checking controls, warning lights, operating procedures or maintenance requirements.

Engine performance: a narrow paper advantage for each bike
Hero Xtreme 160R 4V: higher published power
Hero lists 16.9 PS at 8,500 rpm for the Xtreme 160R 4V. That is 0.9 PS above the specified N160 2V’s 16 PS at 8,750 rpm. The Hero also reaches its published peak power 250 rpm earlier. On paper, those numbers favor the Xtreme for riders who value the upper part of the rev range, but they do not prove that it will accelerate faster in every gear or situation.
Bajaj Pulsar N160 2V: slightly higher published torque
Bajaj lists 14.65 Nm at 6,750 rpm, compared with Hero’s 14.6 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The difference is only 0.05 Nm. It is too small to turn into a meaningful real-world verdict without controlled testing, gearing data, riding conditions and identical measurement methods.
Why the valve and cooling descriptions matter
The N160 specification identifies an air-cooled engine, while the Xtreme is described as air-oil-cooled and four-valve. Those descriptions explain design differences, not a guaranteed reliability, refinement or mileage winner. Both motorcycles use five-speed transmissions, so your decision should include clutch feel, low-speed response, vibration and how easily each engine holds the speed you use on your regular roads.

Brakes, ABS and suspension
Hardware differences
The Pulsar has the larger listed brake rotors: a 300 mm front disc and 230 mm rear disc, versus 276 mm and 220 mm on the Hero. Rotor diameter alone cannot establish stopping distance because tyre compound, pad material, caliper calibration, ABS tuning, rider input and road surface all matter.
Both motorcycles have dual-channel ABS. Bajaj’s listed specification adds ride modes; Hero’s listed specification identifies dual-channel ABS without listing ride modes. Do not assume that a feature shown on an N160 S or SS 4V page is fitted to the N160 2V.
Front forks and rear adjustment
The Xtreme uses a 37 mm KYB USD fork and a seven-step adjustable monoshock. The N160 2V specification identifies a 33 mm USD front fork. A larger fork diameter or an adjustment mechanism is not automatically better for every rider: setup, spring rate and damping determine whether the motorcycle feels controlled over broken roads or harsh over sharp bumps.

Seat height, weight and everyday fit
Seat height
The Pulsar’s 795 mm seat is 5 mm lower than the Xtreme’s 800 mm seat. That is a small numerical difference, but inseam length, seat width and the rider’s footwear can make the motorcycles feel more different than the numbers suggest. Sit on both with your normal riding shoes and place both feet on the ground before deciding.
Kerb weight
At 147.5 kg, the Hero is 4.5 kg lighter than the 152 kg Bajaj figure. The lighter kerb weight may make the Xtreme easier to move out of a parking space or balance at walking pace, but weight distribution matters as much as the total number. Compare steering effort, turning radius and low-speed stability with the fuel level close to normal use.

Ground clearance and passenger use
Both models list 165 mm of ground clearance, so neither has a published numerical advantage for speed breakers. Ask a passenger to sit behind you during the showroom evaluation if two-up comfort matters. Check knee angle, grab points, footpeg position and whether the rear suspension remains settled over the roads you actually use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fuel capacity is not the same as riding range
Bajaj lists a 14-litre tank and Hero a 12-litre tank. The Pulsar therefore carries 2 litres more fuel on paper, which may reduce refuelling frequency if both motorcycles deliver similar consumption. It does not establish a longer range because no controlled, same-route mileage comparison is available for these two models.
For a realistic ownership estimate, record fuel used and distance over several full-to-full refills on your own route. Keep separate notes for solo commuting, two-up riding, traffic-heavy use and sustained highway speeds. Do not convert the tank-size difference directly into a claimed kilometre advantage.

| Bajaj Pulsar N160 range/configuration | ₹1,22,106 ex-showroom | Bajaj’s displayed range/configuration figure; verify the exact N160 2V trim and city quote |
These are page-listed figures, not matched on-road quotations for identical cities and equipment. Which bike suits which buyer?
Choose the Pulsar N160 2V if these priorities lead
- You want the lower published seat height of the two.
- You value the larger listed fuel tank and larger listed brake rotors.
- You specifically want the N160 2V configuration’s listed ride modes.
- The local dealer offers a materially lower on-road quote for the exact model you want.
- You prefer its engine response, clutch and riding position after a back-to-back test ride.
Choose the Xtreme 160R 4V if these priorities lead
- You want the higher published peak-power figure.
- You value the lower listed kerb weight.
- A seven-step adjustable monoshock is important for changing solo and passenger loads.
- The 37 mm KYB USD fork and your preferred chassis feel work better on your roads.
- Its final on-road price and dealer support make more sense in your city.
Neither list is a substitute for checking the exact motorcycle. A dealer may display a different year, colour, equipment package or variant name from the one used in an online specification page.
A practical test-ride method
- Verify the identity. Photograph the variant name, engine description and equipment list on the dealer’s quotation or motorcycle documents.
- Set the controls. Adjust mirrors and levers, confirm that you can reach the ground comfortably, and check whether the riding posture puts pressure on your wrists or knees.
- Test low-speed control. Ride through slow turns, a U-turn and a stop-start section. Note clutch take-up, throttle smoothness, steering effort and balance.
- Test usable acceleration safely. Compare roll-on response in the gears you would use for overtaking, without treating the manufacturer’s peak figures as a guarantee of results.
- Use a rough surface. Pay attention to fork movement, rear-suspension control and whether either end feels harsh, loose or prone to bottoming.
- Apply the brakes progressively. Check lever feel and straight-line stability in a safe, legal area. Do not attempt emergency-stop demonstrations on public roads.
- Repeat with a passenger if relevant. Confirm knee room, grab-point comfort and whether the rear suspension remains controlled.
- Obtain the final quote. Compare ex-showroom, registration, insurance and every dealer charge for the same city and date.
What the published specifications cannot establish
- There is no controlled same-route mileage comparison in the available material.
- The figures do not establish acceleration, top speed, braking distance or vibration levels.
- They do not establish long-term reliability, resale value, service quality or parts availability in your city.
- They do not show which motorcycle will be more comfortable for your height, passenger or road conditions.
- They do not make the listed price a guaranteed transaction price, because trim and location affect the on-road total.
Use the specifications to create a shortlist, then use an exact-variant inspection, a back-to-back ride and an itemised local quotation to make the final decision. On the evidence available, the Hero’s power advantage and lighter listed weight appeal to performance-focused riders, while the Bajaj’s slightly higher listed torque, larger tank, larger listed discs and lower seat can matter more to other buyers. Neither is a universal winner.
