Bajaj Pulsar 220F vs Yamaha FZ-S FI Hybrid: Which Bike Fits You?

The Pulsar 220F leads on published power and torque, while the FZ-S FI Hybrid adds SMG, Hybrid Power Assist and stop-start technology. Here is what the official data proves—and what requires a test ride and local quote.

Choose the Bajaj Pulsar 220F if your priority is engine performance and a larger fuel tank; choose the Yamaha FZ-S FI Hybrid if you value stop-start technology, hybrid assist and a lighter, efficiency-focused feature set. The Pulsar has the stronger published output by a wide margin. Yamaha, however, is the only one of the two with documented Smart Motor Generator (SMG), Hybrid Power Assist and Stop & Start System (SSS) hardware. Neither motorcycle can be declared the real-world mileage, comfort, handling or value winner from official specifications alone.

This comparison uses India-market information checked on 13 October 2026. Prices, stock and equipment can change, so obtain a dated quote and confirm the exact variant with an authorised dealer before paying.

Engine output: the Pulsar has the clear paper advantage

The Pulsar 220F’s 220 cc engine is rated at 20.9 PS and 18.55 Nm, while the FZ-S FI Hybrid’s 149 cc engine is rated at 12.4 PS and 13.3 Nm. That gives the Bajaj a substantial advantage in stated peak power and torque, as well as displacement.

For a rider who regularly carries a passenger, climbs highways or wants stronger overtaking reserves, those specifications make the Pulsar the more performance-oriented choice. They do not, by themselves, establish a particular 0–60 km/h time, top speed, refinement level or roll-on acceleration. Gearing, engine mapping, rider weight, wind, tyres and road gradient all affect what you feel on the road.

What the output figures mean in daily use

  • Urban riding: both engines can handle normal commuting, but the Yamaha’s lower output is paired with a 138 kg listed kerb weight and an efficiency-led feature set.
  • Open roads: the Pulsar’s higher rated output should provide more headroom when accelerating into faster traffic, but confirm the riding position and vibration level during a test ride.
  • Two-up use: published torque is only one factor. Suspension setup, seat space and how easily you can place both feet matter just as much and require an in-person assessment.

Do not turn peak figures into a performance promise

Peak power occurs at different engine speeds on these motorcycles, so comparing only the largest number can be misleading. The Bajaj reaches its stated maximum at 8,500 rpm and the Yamaha at 7,250 rpm; the torque peaks are also at different speeds. A bike that feels stronger at the exact rpm you use in traffic may be easier to ride than a bike with a higher peak figure. During a test ride, check throttle response from low speed, the number of downshifts needed for an overtake and how comfortable the engine feels when held at a steady cruising speed.

The Yamaha’s listed 138 kg kerb weight is useful context for manoeuvring, but a current official kerb weight was not captured for the Pulsar. Do not calculate a definitive power-to-weight winner until both weights are verified on the same basis. Kerb-weight conventions can also differ by manufacturer, fuel level and equipment.

How Yamaha’s “hybrid” system works

“Hybrid” here does not mean a plug-in motorcycle or a large traction battery. Yamaha’s cited brochure identifies three functions: Smart Motor Generator (SMG), Hybrid Power Assist and Stop & Start System (SSS).

Smart Motor Generator

SMG combines the starter-generator role in Yamaha’s system. It enables quiet, integrated engine starting and is part of the hardware supporting the assist and stop-start functions. The brochure does not present it as an electric-only drive system.

Hybrid Power Assist

Yamaha describes power assist as optimizing engine control according to traffic conditions. The assist is intended to help the petrol engine during the situations for which the system is calibrated; it is not a claim that the motorcycle can travel on electric power alone. Ask the dealer to demonstrate when the assist operates and whether the rider can change or disable any related setting.

Stop & Start System

SSS automatically stops the engine when the motorcycle is idling and restarts it when the clutch is pulled, according to Yamaha’s brochure. In congested traffic, this can reduce the time the engine spends running while stationary. Whether that is useful to you depends on traffic density, how often you disable the system and your tolerance for frequent restarts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop-start behaviour is worth testing in the exact conditions you ride. At a quiet dealership, the system may appear unobtrusive; in a queue with repeated short stops, the timing of engine cut-off and restart can affect how natural the bike feels. Check the owner’s instructions for the conditions that permit operation, and ask how the feature behaves if the battery charge or engine temperature is unsuitable. Do not assume every idle stop will activate.

Fuel economy: what is proven and what is not

Yamaha states that fuel economy is improved by approximately 3% with SSS, specifically “Tested in WMTC Emissions mode.” That is a qualified manufacturer result for the stop-start function under a standardized emissions-testing mode, not a mileage figure for the whole motorcycle and not a head-to-head road test against the Pulsar. The claim is documented in Yamaha’s FZS FI series brochure.

No directly comparable real-world mileage test for these exact versions was established. Consequently, it is not responsible to say that the Yamaha will always deliver better kilometres per litre, or that the Pulsar’s larger engine will always cost more to run. Traffic, speed, tyre pressure, load, fuel quality, maintenance and riding style can overwhelm a small laboratory-mode difference.

How to compare mileage after purchase

  1. Fill both motorcycles to the same fuel level at the same station and record the odometer.
  2. Use each bike on a similar route with comparable rider and passenger loads.
  3. Refuel at the same pump method after at least two tanks rather than judging from one short trip.
  4. Calculate kilometres divided by litres added, and record whether SSS was enabled on the Yamaha.
  5. Repeat the measurement in city traffic and on an open route. Keep tyre pressures and luggage as consistent as possible.

The 15-litre Pulsar tank versus the Yamaha’s 13 litres affects refuelling frequency, not necessarily efficiency. A larger tank can be useful where fuel stations are sparse, while a smaller tank can mean less mass when nearly full. Actual range should be calculated from your own measured consumption and the amount of reserve you are comfortable carrying.

Equipment and connected features

Pulsar 220F

Bajaj describes a connected digital console with Bluetooth, Ride Connect functions and navigation. The 2026 announcement also identifies LED turn indicators and new graphics. Confirm whether the motorcycle offered by your dealer has the same software, indicator and connectivity equipment as the current page, because model-year and variant stock can differ.

FZ-S FI Hybrid

Yamaha lists a colour TFT display, turn-by-turn navigation, music control and Y-Connect. These are named features rather than proof that one manufacturer’s interface is easier or more reliable. Pair your own phone during a dealer demonstration and check visibility in direct sunlight, control placement, notification behaviour and whether navigation instructions remain usable with gloves.

Connected functions also introduce practical questions that a brochure cannot settle: phone compatibility, permissions, map-data dependence, Bluetooth reconnection and the effect of rain or bright sunlight on screen readability. Ask to see the actual production motorcycle, not just a showroom photograph, and verify which functions remain available if your phone is not connected.

Brakes, ABS and fuel capacity

Both cited specification sets list front and rear disc brakes with single-channel ABS. Yamaha specifies a 282 mm front disc and 220 mm rear disc; the captured Bajaj specification does not provide disc diameters. Single-channel ABS normally controls the front wheel, so it is not equivalent to dual-channel ABS on both wheels. Confirm the exact equipment on the motorcycle you are offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disc diameter is only one part of braking performance. Tyre condition, pad compound, suspension setup, road surface and lever feel all matter. Make progressive stops during a safe test ride and check whether the controls are easy to modulate at walking pace. Never use a public road to conduct an emergency-braking experiment.

Price and availability: do not compare the wrong numbers

Why the Pulsar price needs verification

Bajaj’s current model page shows a starting Delhi ex-showroom price of ₹1,35,582 near the top, while an FAQ on that same page says ₹1,28,490. Bajaj’s 18 December 2025 launch release states ₹1.28 lakh for the updated 2026 Pulsar 220F. These references may reflect different update dates or presentations, so none should be silently treated as a single definitive current price. Ask a Bajaj dealer for a variant-specific quote showing the city, quote date, ex-showroom amount, registration, insurance and on-road total.

What Yamaha’s ₹2,000 means

Yamaha’s official e-shop page displays a ₹2,000 booking amount and explicitly says it is a down payment adjusted against the final quotation. It is not the motorcycle’s purchase price. The captured page does not establish a full ex-showroom price for the FZ-S FI Hybrid. It also warns that stock may be unavailable for a selected state or city and directs buyers to an authorised dealer. The booking page is Yamaha’s FZ-S FI Hybrid listing.

Use an apples-to-apples quote

  • Request both ex-showroom and on-road totals for the same Indian city.
  • Ask for the exact model year, colour and variant code.
  • Separate mandatory registration and insurance from optional accessories, extended warranties and finance charges.
  • Record the quote date because prices and stock are volatile.
  • Confirm delivery time and whether the displayed equipment is fitted to the actual vehicle, not merely shown in a brochure.
  • Ask whether the booking payment is refundable, how long the quoted price is valid and what happens if the selected colour or city has no stock.

Fuel cost, insurance, finance interest and service expenses can materially change the ownership calculation, but the cited pages do not provide a matched total-cost schedule. Build your own estimate from the dealer’s written figures instead of treating the lower initial quote as automatically cheaper over several years.

Which one suits your riding pattern?

Choose the Pulsar 220F when performance comes first

  • You want the higher published power and torque figures.
  • You spend meaningful time on highways or carry a passenger often.
  • A 15-litre listed tank is more convenient for your routes.
  • You prefer the Pulsar’s stated connected-console and navigation package after trying it in person.
  • You want a motorcycle with more stated displacement and do not need a documented hybrid stop-start system.

Choose the FZ-S FI Hybrid when efficiency features and manageable size matter

  • You want SMG, Hybrid Power Assist and an automatic stop-start function.
  • Your commute involves repeated traffic lights or long idling periods.
  • You prefer the Yamaha’s listed 138 kg kerb weight and compact 149 cc format.
  • You value the colour TFT, Y-Connect, music control and turn-by-turn navigation after checking them with your phone.
  • You are comfortable verifying the final price and stock locally because the online booking page does not establish a full ex-showroom price.

Scenario-based choice

For a mostly urban solo commute with frequent signals, the Yamaha’s stop-start and assist functions are the most relevant differentiators. For regular expressway use, frequent two-up travel or a preference for stronger stated output, the Pulsar’s figures deserve priority. For mixed use, let your test ride decide whether the Yamaha’s lower listed weight and technology offset the Bajaj’s output advantage.

When neither specification sheet decides it

If your priorities are seat comfort, suspension compliance, steering effort, clutch feel, vibration, braking feel or low-speed balance, the published data cannot answer the question. Arrange back-to-back rides on the same roads, ideally with the passenger and luggage you normally carry.

Test-ride checklist before booking

  1. Fit: sit in your normal riding position and check reach to the bars, ground contact and passenger room.
  2. Low-speed control: ride through a tight turn and a stop-start queue; note clutch take-up, throttle response and steering weight.
  3. Acceleration: use the same safe, legal stretch on each motorcycle and compare smoothness rather than trying to create an unofficial race.
  4. Braking: perform progressive stops in a safe area and check lever feel; do not infer emergency performance from a brochure.
  5. Technology: pair your phone, inspect navigation prompts and test the Yamaha’s SSS behaviour if enabled.
  6. Practicality: check mirror view, stand operation, luggage options and whether the fuel tank and seat suit your regular trips.
  7. Documentation: match the chassis and engine details on the offered motorcycle to the written quotation and confirm warranty and service terms.
  8. Passenger check: repeat the route with the person and helmet you normally carry; pillion comfort can change your decision more than a small specification difference.

Bottom line

The Bajaj Pulsar 220F is the logical starting point for a buyer who wants substantially higher published engine output and a larger listed tank. The Yamaha FZ-S FI Hybrid is the more technology-focused alternative, with documented SMG, Hybrid Power Assist and SSS, plus a qualified approximately 3% SSS fuel-economy improvement under WMTC emissions-mode testing. That claim does not settle real-world mileage, and the available information does not establish a winner for price, comfort, handling, reliability or total value. Decide after a same-day test ride and date-stamped local quotes rather than treating either brochure as a complete ownership verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bike has more power, the Pulsar 220F or FZ-S FI Hybrid?

Is the Yamaha definitely more fuel efficient?

Yamaha claims approximately 3% improved fuel economy from SSS in WMTC emissions mode. That is not a matched real-world comparison with the Pulsar, so everyday mileage remains dependent on route, speed, load and riding style.

Which motorcycle is better for highway riding?

The Pulsar’s higher stated power and torque provide the stronger paper case for highway overtakes and carrying a passenger. Confirm cruising comfort, vibration, wind protection and your preferred riding position on a test ride.

What is the fuel-tank difference?

The Pulsar is listed with a 15-litre tank and the Yamaha with a 13-litre tank. The two-litre difference does not prove a particular riding range because consumption and reserve usage are different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do both bikes have dual-channel ABS?

No. The cited specifications list single-channel ABS and disc brakes for both motorcycles. Yamaha specifies 282 mm front and 220 mm rear discs; verify the exact equipment on the dealer’s motorcycle.

Is ₹2,000 the Yamaha FZ-S FI Hybrid’s price?

No. Yamaha’s e-shop identifies ₹2,000 as a booking amount or down payment adjusted against the final quotation. It does not establish the bike’s full ex-showroom or on-road price.

Why do Bajaj prices differ on its own page?

The current Pulsar page displays ₹1,35,582 near the top and ₹1,28,490 in an FAQ, while Bajaj’s 18 December 2025 release states ₹1.28 lakh. Request a current, city-specific written quote and check its date and tax basis.

Which bike is lighter?

Yamaha lists the FZ-S FI Hybrid at 138 kg kerb weight. A current official kerb-weight figure was not captured for the Pulsar, so a definitive weight comparison should wait for matched official figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before placing a booking?

Confirm the exact variant, model year, colour, stock, ex-showroom and on-road prices, registration and insurance charges, booking terms, delivery date, fitted equipment, warranty and service conditions. Then test ride both bikes on comparable roads.

The Bottom Line

Verdict: Pick the Pulsar 220F for its clearly higher published output and 15-litre tank. Pick the FZ-S FI Hybrid for documented SMG, Hybrid Power Assist, SSS and Yamaha’s connected display package. Verify local prices and stock, and use a back-to-back test ride to settle comfort, handling and everyday usability.
