Bajaj Pulsar 220F vs Hero Xtreme 250R: Key Differences and Which One to Buy

The Hero Xtreme 250R offers substantially higher published power and dual-channel ABS, while the Bajaj Pulsar 220F counters with a lower price snapshot and larger tank. Compare the evidence, price caveats and test-ride checks before choosing.

Short answer: Choose the Hero Xtreme 250R if your priority is the stronger published performance package: 30 PS, 25 Nm, a six-speed gearbox, assist-and-slip clutch and switchable dual-channel ABS. Choose the Bajaj Pulsar 220F if its lower price, 15-litre tank and simpler everyday specification fit your budget and riding needs better. The figures below are published specifications and price snapshots for India, not results from a same-route road test. Get a current city-specific on-road quote and ride both motorcycles before paying a booking amount.

At a glance: what separates the two bikes

The Pulsar 220F and Xtreme 250R are not equal-output alternatives. The Hero has a larger, liquid-cooled engine and considerably higher claimed output, while the Bajaj remains a lower-displacement oil-cooled motorcycle with a larger fuel tank. That difference affects the kind of buyer each one suits, but it does not by itself prove which motorcycle accelerates faster in every real-world situation.

Engine and performance: the Xtreme has the clear specification advantage

Pulsar 220F: familiar, lower-output configuration

Bajaj lists the Pulsar 220F with a 220 cc oil-cooled engine producing 20.9 PS at 8,500 rpm. Its five-speed count is listed by ZigWheels rather than in the cited Bajaj specification excerpt, so treat that detail as a third-party comparison entry rather than a direct manufacturer claim.

The 220F’s output is enough to make it a sensible choice for riders who do not need the highest number on a specification sheet. The larger 15-litre tank is also relevant to riders who prefer fewer fuel stops. It does not establish a longer range, because actual distance per tank depends on traffic, speed, payload, tyre pressures and riding style.

Xtreme 250R: more displacement, cooling and output

Hero’s official specification gives the Xtreme 250R a 249.03 cc liquid-cooled DOHC engine rated at 30 PS at 9,250 rpm and 25 Nm at 7,250 rpm. Those are materially higher published figures than the Pulsar’s 20.9 PS. The engine is paired with a six-speed constant-mesh transmission and an assist-and-slip clutch.

The extra cylinder capacity, liquid cooling and additional gearbox ratio make the Xtreme the specification-led choice for a rider who values stronger potential performance and a more comprehensive transmission package. “Potential” matters here: the available pages do not provide a controlled, same-rider acceleration, overtaking or top-speed test against the Pulsar, so those outcomes should not be presented as measured facts.

How to interpret the power gap

  • The 30 PS versus 20.9 PS comparison is a manufacturer-specification comparison, not a laboratory or road-test result.
  • Peak power arrives at different engine speeds, so the numbers alone do not describe every part of the rev range.
  • Rider weight, gearing, tyre condition, wind, road gradient and fuel load can change how either bike feels.
  • A test ride should concentrate on the response you actually need: low-speed smoothness, start-stop tractability, highway overtaking confidence and vibration at your normal cruising speed.

Gearbox and clutch: what the extra ratio buys you

The Xtreme’s six-speed constant-mesh gearbox gives it one more ratio than the five-speed transmission listed for the Pulsar by ZigWheels. Its assist-and-slip clutch is an explicitly listed feature. An assist function can reduce the effort needed at the lever, while a slipper function is intended to moderate rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts; whether you notice either benefit depends on how and where you ride.

Bajaj’s cited product information does not state a current gearbox or clutch specification in the same detail. Do not assume that an unlisted feature is present or absent: ask the dealer to show the exact model-year specification and include it on the quotation if it matters to your decision.

Brakes and ABS: hardware is different, testing is not supplied

Pulsar 220F braking equipment

Bajaj’s 2025 announcement describes front and rear disc brakes with single-channel ABS. The company also describes a digital console with Bluetooth connectivity, Ride Connect app integration and turn-by-turn navigation, along with five-spoke alloy wheels. Those statements are the manufacturer’s feature description, not an independent assessment of stopping distance or wet-road behaviour.

Xtreme 250R braking equipment

Hero lists a 320 mm front disc, a 230 mm rear disc and switchable dual-channel ABS with two modes. Dual-channel ABS can intervene at both wheels, while the ability to switch modes is a feature to understand during a dealer demonstration rather than a reason to assume every setting is appropriate for every road.

What you can and cannot conclude

The Xtreme has the more extensive published braking and ABS specification. The sources do not establish a matched stopping-distance winner, tyre-compound comparison, emergency-braking result or long-term reliability difference. During a legal, safe test ride, check lever reach, initial bite, low-speed modulation and whether the ABS behaviour feels predictable to you.

Fuel tank and mileage: larger capacity is not the same as greater range

The Pulsar’s tank is listed at 15 litres, compared with 11.5 litres for the Xtreme. A larger tank can be convenient for riders who travel where fuel stations are sparse, but a tank-size comparison alone cannot produce a dependable range estimate.

ZigWheels lists 40 kmpl for the Pulsar and 37 kmpl for the Xtreme. Autocar India reports an around-37-kmpl ARAI figure for the Xtreme and notes that owner reports vary. These numbers come from different contexts and are not a matched test performed on the same roads, in the same weather, with the same rider and load. Treat them as claimed or reported reference points, not a promise of what your dashboard or fuel receipts will show.

For a meaningful personal estimate, record the odometer and litres added over several full-tank cycles after you own the motorcycle. Keep the calculation separate for city traffic and open-road riding; combining the two can hide the conditions that matter most to you.

Price: compare the quote you can actually pay

Pulsar 220F price snapshots

Bajaj’s announcement of the updated 2026 Pulsar 220F gave an INR 1.28 lakh price figure. The current Delhi product page displays ₹1,35,582 as its ex-showroom starting price, while the same page’s FAQ shows ₹1,28,490. These conflicting figures demonstrate why a web-page snapshot should not be treated as a universal price for every city or date.

Xtreme 250R price snapshot

Autocar India and ZigWheels list the Xtreme 250R at ₹1.73 lakh ex-showroom. That is a published comparison snapshot, not an on-road quote for your registration district.

Build an itemised on-road comparison

Ex-showroom prices exclude costs that can materially change the amount financed or paid at delivery. Request two written quotations dated the same day and ask each dealer to separate:

  • Ex-showroom motorcycle price and exact model year
  • Registration and road-tax charges for your state or city
  • Insurance provider, policy type, add-ons and premium
  • Any handling, logistics or documentation charge
  • Accessories, extended warranty or service packages included or added
  • Discounts, exchange benefits and the date on which each offer expires

Compare the final on-road total, down payment, interest rate and repayment amount—not just the headline ex-showroom number. A lower sticker price can lose its advantage if insurance, registration or optional add-ons are structured differently.

Availability and model-year checks

Bajaj announced a 2026 Pulsar 220F update and continues to show the motorcycle on its official product page. ZigWheels labels its comparison entry “DISCONTINUED,” which conflicts with Bajaj’s current listing. That conflict is unresolved by the published pages, so confirm physical stock and the manufacturing month directly with an authorised dealer before booking.

Hero has a live official Xtreme 250R product page. A live webpage still does not guarantee that your nearest outlet has your preferred colour or an immediately deliverable motorcycle. Ask the dealer to confirm the vehicle identification details, colour, model year, manufacturing date and whether the bike is available for a proper test ride.

Which bike suits which buyer?

Choose the Xtreme 250R when these priorities lead

  • You specifically want the higher published output of 30 PS and 25 Nm.
  • A six-speed gearbox and assist-and-slip clutch are important to your specification checklist.
  • You prefer switchable dual-channel ABS and the listed 320/230 mm disc-brake hardware.
  • You are willing to pay the higher published ex-showroom price and accept the smaller 11.5-litre tank.
  • Your riding includes regular highway use or spirited riding where the additional specification matters more than minimum purchase cost.

Choose the Pulsar 220F when these priorities lead

  • Your budget is closer to the current Pulsar price snapshots than the Xtreme’s ₹1.73 lakh listing.
  • You value a 15-litre tank and the established 220 cc format more than maximum published output.
  • Single-channel ABS meets your minimum equipment requirement after you assess your roads and riding habits.
  • You want the 2026 feature update described by Bajaj, including the digital console, Bluetooth connectivity, Ride Connect integration and navigation features.
  • A local dealer can confirm stock, parts and a satisfactory test ride at a price you can document in writing.

When the answer is genuinely close

The decision is less about declaring one motorcycle universally “best” and more about assigning weight to price, output, braking specification, tank capacity and local availability. A rider who rarely uses open highways may gain more from the Pulsar’s lower entry price and larger tank than from the Xtreme’s extra power. A rider who will otherwise regret not buying the higher-output machine may consider the Xtreme’s premium worthwhile. Neither conclusion can be made responsibly without your final city quote and a ride on the exact motorcycles available to you.

A practical test-ride checklist

  1. Confirm the identity first. Photograph or record the model name, model year, manufacturing month, colour and vehicle identification details on the test bike.
  2. Set up the controls. Check whether the handlebar, mirrors, clutch lever and brake lever can be positioned comfortably while you wear the gear you normally use.
  3. Test low-speed control. Ride through a quiet area and evaluate clutch take-up, throttle smoothness, steering effort, turning radius and balance at walking pace.
  4. Use the gearbox normally. Shift through the available ratios, note the effort and spacing, and check whether the six-speed Xtreme’s extra ratio or the Pulsar’s listed five-speed arrangement suits your roads.
  5. Assess braking progressively. Start with gentle stops, then perform firmer stops only where legal and safe. Notice lever feel and ABS intervention; do not attempt an unsafe emergency test on public roads.
  6. Check the riding position. Ride long enough to identify pressure on your wrists, hips, knees and lower back, rather than judging comfort from a showroom sit.
  7. Inspect practicality. Look at the instrument display, switchgear, mirrors, stand operation, luggage points and fuel-filler access. Verify the features promised in the quotation.
  8. Repeat the ride with a passenger if relevant. A passenger changes balance, braking demand and usable space. Do not assume solo comfort predicts two-up comfort.
  9. Collect written numbers. Before leaving, obtain the dated on-road quotation, delivery time, warranty terms, insurance details and any mandatory accessories.

Ownership questions the published data does not answer

The available specifications do not establish which motorcycle has lower maintenance costs, a better service experience, greater reliability or stronger resale value. Those outcomes vary with service location, usage, parts pricing, riding conditions and time. Do not let a salesperson turn the absence of comparative evidence into a certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead, ask both dealers for the scheduled-service intervals and labour rates applicable to the exact model year, the price and availability of routine consumables, warranty exclusions, roadside-assistance terms and the process for obtaining replacement parts. Keep those answers separate from the performance comparison: they are local ownership checks, not settled national rankings.

Bottom-line decision

On published specifications, the Hero Xtreme 250R is the performance-and-equipment choice: 30 PS, 25 Nm, liquid cooling, six gears, an assist-and-slip clutch and switchable dual-channel ABS. The Bajaj Pulsar 220F is the budget-and-practicality alternative: a 220 cc oil-cooled engine rated at 20.9 PS, a 15-litre tank, front and rear discs with single-channel ABS and a lower—but currently inconsistent—set of published price figures. Check the exact local stock and quotation, then let your test ride and budget decide which trade-off is acceptable.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
