There is no universal winner between the Bajaj Pulsar 180 and Hero Xtreme 160R 4V. The published peak outputs are almost identical, while the Hero is listed as lighter and equipped with dual-channel ABS. The Pulsar counters with a larger stated engine, a larger fuel tank and a lower dated base ex-showroom price. Your decision should therefore start with two practical checks: whether a Pulsar 180 is actually available at a Bajaj dealer in your city, and which bike feels better during a careful test ride.
Official Bajaj pages currently give conflicting availability signals, so do not treat the Pulsar as a guaranteed new-bike purchase until a dealer provides written stock and pricing. The specifications and prices below apply to India and use information available through October 13, 2026; on-road totals vary by city.

Quick verdict: choose by priority, not by a tiny power difference
On paper, the Pulsar 180 has a small advantage in peak torque and more engine capacity. The Xtreme 160R 4V has the lower published weight and dual-channel ABS on Hero’s current product page. Those are meaningful differences, but the 0.1-PS gap in the listed peak-power figures is too small to declare a performance winner. No controlled acceleration, braking or handling comparison for these exact motorcycles was established in the available sources.

Choose the Xtreme if its lower mass, dual-channel ABS and current dealer support matter more. In either case, obtain a city-specific on-road quote and ride both motorcycles before paying a booking amount.

Availability comes before the specification sheet
The Pulsar 180’s buying decision is unusually dependent on local stock. Bajaj’s page titled Discontinued Pulsar Bikes includes the model, yet Bajaj also exposes a Pulsar 180 booking page with pricing and specifications. A 2026 brochure is hosted in Bajaj’s current brochure directory as well. These pages may be stale, overlapping or market-specific; they do not establish nationwide dealer supply.
That conflict means the Pulsar should not be described categorically as either discontinued everywhere or available everywhere. Before comparing finance offers, ask a nearby Bajaj outlet to confirm the following in writing:
- Whether a new Pulsar 180 is physically in stock or can be invoiced to your city.
- The model year and manufacturing month of the exact motorcycle offered.
- The ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, handling or logistics charges and any optional accessories.
- The warranty start date, delivery timeline and whether the quoted motorcycle is a fresh production unit or old unsold stock.
- That the vehicle identification number and variant on the quotation match the Pulsar 180 you intend to buy.
If the dealer cannot provide a firm allocation or written quote, compare the Hero as the readily orderable option and treat any Pulsar price seen online as indicative only.

| Specification | Bajaj Pulsar 180 | Hero Xtreme 160R 4V | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine displacement | 178.61 cc | 163.2 cc | Manufacturer-stated capacity; displacement alone does not predict acceleration. |
| Maximum power | 17 PS at 8,500 rpm | 16.9 PS at 8,500 rpm | Near-equal published peak figures, not a road-test result. |
| Maximum torque | 15 Nm at 6,500 rpm | 14.6 Nm at 6,500 rpm | The Pulsar’s listed peak is slightly higher. |
| Kerb weight | 156 kg | 147.5 kg on Hero’s product page; 146 kg in the comparison table | Source values differ for the Hero; verify the delivered bike’s specification. |
| Fuel-tank capacity | 15 litres | 12 litres | The Pulsar carries more fuel before refuelling, but range still depends on consumption. |
| ABS configuration | Single-channel in the comparison listing | Dual-channel on Hero’s official product page | Confirm the exact variant and equipment on the motorcycle offered. |
| Approximate base ex-showroom price | ₹1.22 lakh | ₹1.33 lakh | Dated comparison figures, not city-specific on-road prices. |
The engine and tank figures for the Pulsar come from Bajaj’s 2026 Pulsar 180 brochure. Hero’s capacity, output, official kerb weight and ABS information are on its current Xtreme 160R 4V product page. The weight and ABS entry for the Pulsar, along with the dated base-price comparison, are reported by ZigWheels, whose page was updated September 3, 2026.
Engine and performance: what the figures do and do not tell you
Peak output is effectively tied
Both manufacturers list maximum power at the same engine speed, and the difference between the two peak-power figures is only one tenth of a PS. The Pulsar’s listed peak torque is 0.4 Nm higher, also at the same engine speed. Those specifications establish a narrow paper advantage for the Bajaj, not a measurable winner in traffic or on a highway.
Acceleration depends on gearing, throttle mapping, engine response, rider and passenger load, tyre condition, fuel level, altitude and temperature. None of those variables is resolved by a brochure. Do not buy the Pulsar expecting a guaranteed faster 0-to-100-km/h run, and do not assume the Hero’s nearly equal peak power will feel identical at every rpm.

Why the displacement difference matters only conditionally
The Pulsar’s larger stated displacement may appeal to riders who prefer a 180-class engine, while the Hero’s smaller engine reaches almost the same published peak output. That combination tells you the Hero is making comparable headline power from less capacity; it does not prove superior efficiency, refinement or reliability. Listen for vibration, assess clutch effort and observe low-speed throttle control during a test ride rather than inferring those qualities from cubic centimetres.
Use a test ride to answer the questions a table cannot
Ride each motorcycle over the same route if possible. Start with stop-and-go traffic, then use an open stretch where legal to assess how naturally the engine responds when you roll on from ordinary commuting speeds. Notice whether you need frequent downshifts, how easy it is to hold a steady pace and whether heat or vibration affects your comfort. These are personal, speed- and route-dependent observations, not published test results, so record them for your own decision.
Weight, braking and everyday control
The Hero’s lower listed mass can be felt at walking pace
Hero’s current page lists a kerb weight of 147.5 kg, while the comparison table lists 146 kg. The Pulsar is listed at 156 kg. Because the sources disagree on the Hero by 1.5 kg, use the official figure for your paperwork and regard the comparison figure as a separate published value, not a laboratory correction.
Even with that discrepancy, both published Hero figures are below the Pulsar’s. A lighter motorcycle may be easier to push out of a parking space, balance while turning tightly and recover when a foot goes down. It does not automatically handle better at speed; suspension setup, wheel and tyre specifications, rider fit and road surface also influence confidence. Check the actual motorcycle rather than assuming a weight number predicts your experience.
ABS is the more consequential safety distinction
The comparison listing describes the Pulsar with single-channel ABS, whereas Hero’s official product page specifies dual-channel ABS for the Xtreme 160R 4V. Dual-channel systems can manage wheel lock on both wheels under hard braking; a single-channel arrangement does not provide the same rear-wheel intervention. Confirm the ABS configuration on the exact variant, because equipment can change by model year or market.
ABS is a safety aid, not permission to exceed a safe speed or follow too closely. During a test ride, check lever reach, progression and your ability to keep the motorcycle stable while braking normally. Do not perform emergency-braking experiments in public traffic; any controlled check belongs in a legal, open area with appropriate protective gear and a clear escape path.

Fuel capacity and the mileage question
The Pulsar has the larger tank
Bajaj lists a 15-litre tank and Hero lists 12 litres. The extra capacity can reduce the frequency of fuel stops for a rider who covers long distances, but it does not establish a longer range. A bigger tank can also add more fuel weight when full. Your actual distance between refills depends on speed, traffic, load, tyre pressure, maintenance and riding style.
Do not treat 48 km/l as a guaranteed Hero result
The ZigWheels comparison reports 48 km/l for the Hero and marks the Pulsar’s mileage as not available. That is a publisher’s figure, not a controlled head-to-head test or a manufacturer guarantee. Hero’s reviewed official FAQ discusses fuel efficiency generally but does not provide a number on that page. No comparable official mileage declaration was established for both motorcycles.
For a realistic budget, record fuel use after several of your own refuelling cycles: reset the trip meter, fill to the same level, note litres added and divide kilometres travelled by litres consumed. Keep the route and riding pattern consistent. Until you have that record, present mileage as unknown rather than promising that one model will save a fixed amount of fuel.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Price: the dated comparison favours Bajaj, but the invoice decides
The September 3, 2026 ZigWheels comparison lists approximate base ex-showroom prices of ₹1.22 lakh for the Pulsar and ₹1.33 lakh for the Hero. These are not on-road totals, and the Pulsar figure has limited practical value if a dealer cannot supply the motorcycle. Hero’s official variant page shows prices of ₹1,33,195 and ₹1,37,680 for its listed variants; confirm which variant corresponds to the motorcycle you are considering on the official variant and price page.
Hero states that on-road pricing depends on city, RTO charges and insurance. The same principle applies to the Bajaj: registration taxes, insurance selection, accessories and dealer charges can change the final amount. Request an itemised quotation that separates:
- Ex-showroom motorcycle price and variant.
- RTO or road-tax charges for your state.
- Insurance premium, policy type and add-ons.
- Any handling, logistics, extended-warranty or accessory charges.
- Finance processing fees, interest rate, down payment and total repayment if you are borrowing.
Compare the final payable amount and warranty terms, not just the headline gap. A seemingly cheaper Pulsar can lose its price advantage if it is old stock, unavailable locally or attracts unusual delivery charges; a higher Hero quote may include a different variant or insurance package.

Which bike suits each buying priority?
Choose the Pulsar 180 when these conditions are true
- A Bajaj dealer confirms a new, identifiable Pulsar 180 is available in your city with a written on-road quote.
- You prefer the larger stated displacement and slightly higher published peak torque.
- The 15-litre tank fits your travel pattern better than a smaller tank.
- The verified final invoice remains attractive after registration, insurance and finance costs.
- You are comfortable with the listed single-channel ABS configuration and it meets your safety priorities.
Choose the Xtreme 160R 4V when these conditions are true
- You place a high value on the lower official kerb-weight figure and easier low-speed manoeuvring.
- Dual-channel ABS is a deciding safety requirement for you.
- You want a motorcycle that a local Hero dealer can quote, register and support without the Pulsar’s availability uncertainty.
- The riding position, clutch, throttle response and braking feel better to you during back-to-back rides.
- The applicable variant price and finance offer fit your budget after all on-road charges.
For city commuting
Weight, turning effort, clutch smoothness, mirror visibility and heat management generally matter more in repeated traffic than a tiny peak-power difference. Use a route with speed breakers, U-turns, narrow parking areas and congested junctions. The motorcycle that lets you place both feet confidently and modulate the controls without strain is usually the more useful commuter for your body and roads.

For mixed city and open-road riding
Compare cruising comfort, wind exposure, vibration, seat support and the frequency of gear changes on the roads you actually use. The published specifications cannot establish which bike is calmer at your preferred speed. Carry the type of luggage you normally use during the ride if the dealer permits it, and ask how accessories affect warranty and payload.
For longer trips
The Pulsar’s larger tank may reduce planned fuel stops, but the Hero’s lower mass and dual-channel ABS may be more important to another rider. Neither conclusion can be made from tank size alone. Check service reach along your regular route, tyre and brake-part availability, luggage mounting options and the dealer’s written warranty support before committing to touring use.

- Inspect before starting: confirm the model name, variant, manufacturing date, tyre condition, visible leaks, warning lights and ABS indicators.
- Set your position: adjust mirrors and controls, check reach to the levers and see whether your knees, wrists and lower back remain relaxed.
- Begin slowly: test clutch take-up, throttle smoothness, steering effort and balance at walking pace in a safe area.
- Use normal traffic speeds: evaluate roll-on response, gear selection, vibration, mirror usability and heat on the same route for both motorcycles.
- Brake progressively: apply the brakes normally first and observe lever feel. Any stronger braking assessment must be performed only where legal, safe and free of other road users.
- Try practical manoeuvres: make tight turns, a controlled U-turn and a parking push so the weight difference is something you experience rather than merely read.
- Repeat with your regular passenger: if you often carry a pillion, check seating, grab-rail comfort, balance and starting from a stop with the added load.
- Write down impressions immediately: record the route, traffic, weather and fuel level so a memorable but subjective sensation does not become an unsupported claim.
Questions to settle with the dealer before booking
Ask for the exact variant code, model year, manufacturing month, colour, delivery date and VIN allocation. Confirm that the quoted ABS system, tank specification and other equipment match the motorcycle you inspected. Request the warranty booklet, service intervals and the process for handling a part or software issue. If financing, obtain the annual interest rate, total repayment, foreclosure conditions and every fee in writing.
For the Pulsar specifically, ask why the dealer can offer a model that also appears on Bajaj’s discontinued-bike page, and request confirmation that registration will be accepted in your state. For the Hero, ask which of the official listed price variants is in stock and whether the quoted amount includes any dealer-installed accessories. Keep the quotation, booking receipt and promised delivery date; do not rely on a verbal price that can change before invoicing.

Common misconceptions about this comparison
Does 17 PS make the Pulsar definitively faster?
No. The listed peak-power difference is extremely small, and acceleration also depends on gearing, mass, rider, road and conditions. Only a controlled test could establish a measured advantage, and no such result is provided here.

Does the reported 48 km/l prove that the Hero is the mileage winner?
No. It is a figure reported by one comparison publisher, while no comparable Pulsar value or controlled test is supplied. Treat your own repeated fuel log as the useful ownership number.
Is the Pulsar 180 definitely discontinued?
Its status is not settled by the conflicting official web pages. One Bajaj page places it under discontinued Pulsar bikes, while another exposes booking and pricing material. Confirm local dealer stock and registration eligibility before calling it a current new-bike option.
Is the Hero automatically better because it is lighter?
No. Lower mass can help at low speed, but comfort, suspension, ergonomics, tyres and rider preference also shape handling. Ride both motorcycles on comparable roads.

Buy the Bajaj Pulsar 180 only after a dealer proves that a current, registrable motorcycle is available and the complete invoice remains favourable. Its larger stated engine, slightly higher listed torque and larger tank are legitimate reasons to prefer it, not proof of superior real-world performance.
Buy the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V if its lower official weight, dual-channel ABS, clear dealer support and riding feel better match your needs. Because published power is nearly tied and mileage evidence is not comparable, availability, safety equipment, fit and the written on-road quote should decide the purchase—not a headline specification or an unverified fuel claim.
