Bajaj Pulsar 150 vs Hero Xtreme 160R: Key Differences and Which Rider Should Choose

The standard Hero Xtreme 160R and Bajaj Pulsar 150 make different trade-offs. Compare exact trims, manufacturer specifications, local on-road quotes and a test ride before choosing.

There is no universal winner between the Bajaj Pulsar 150 and the standard (2-valve) Hero Xtreme 160R. The Xtreme has the higher listed engine output and lower manufacturer-claimed kerb weight, while the Pulsar offers the larger stated fuel tank and several trim choices. Your decision should be based on the exact trim, the current on-road quote in your city, and a back-to-back test ride—not on an old price list or an unverified mileage claim.

Quick answer: which one is better?

Choose the standard Hero Xtreme 160R if your priorities are the higher published power and torque figures in this comparison, a lower listed kerb weight, and a rear disc brake as standard on the specification page. Choose the Bajaj Pulsar 150 if a 15-litre tank, a familiar 150 cc platform, or the ability to select between single-disc and twin-disc equipment matters more to you.

That answer applies only to the standard Xtreme 160R with the 2-valve engine. Hero sells a separate Xtreme 160R 4V with different specifications; it is not the motorcycle compared in the main table below. Check the model code and equipment on the quotation before comparing prices or performance.

Identify the exact Xtreme 160R before comparing

Hero’s product pages separate the standard Xtreme 160R from the Xtreme 160R 4V. The standard page describes a 163.2 cc, 2-valve motorcycle rated at 15 PS and 14 Nm. The 4V page lists 16.9 PS and 14.6 Nm, so those figures cannot be substituted into a Pulsar-versus-standard-Xtreme comparison. See the standard Xtreme 160R specification page and the distinct Xtreme 160R 4V page when checking a dealer’s listing.

The Pulsar 150 also appears in more than one equipment configuration. Bajaj’s specification page lists a single-disc version and a twin-disc version, with different weights and brake hardware. A dealer may shorten the names on a quote, so ask whether the motorcycle is SD, SD UG, or TD UG and whether the quoted amount includes the same equipment.

Front brake 260 mm disc (single-disc); 280 mm disc (twin-disc) 276 mm disc
Rear brake Drum (single-disc); 230 mm disc (twin-disc) 220 mm disc

These are the manufacturers’ listed figures: Bajaj’s Pulsar 150 specifications and Hero’s standard-model page. They are not independent acceleration, braking-distance, fuel-economy, or handling tests. A specification advantage is useful for narrowing your choice, but it does not prove that one motorcycle will feel better on every road.

Engine and performance: what the numbers mean

Pulsar 150’s stated output

Bajaj lists the Pulsar 150’s 149.50 cc, 2-valve engine at 14 PS at 8,500 rpm and 13.25 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Those figures describe the engine’s peak points, not the amount of drive available at every engine speed. Traffic response, gearing, throttle calibration, rider weight, tyre condition, and maintenance can all change the way the motorcycle feels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard Xtreme 160R’s stated output

Hero lists 163.2 cc for the standard 2-valve Xtreme 160R, with 15 PS at 8,500 rpm and 14 Nm at 6,500 rpm. On paper, that is 1 PS and 0.75 Nm more than the Pulsar at the respective quoted peaks. It is reasonable to treat the Xtreme as the stronger specification on paper, but those figures do not establish a measured 0–60 km/h time or a guaranteed overtaking advantage.

Do not import the 4V figures

The Xtreme 160R 4V’s 16.9 PS and 14.6 Nm belong to a different variant. If a listing shows those outputs, you are not looking at the standard model used for this comparison. Record the exact variant on the sales order so that accessories, insurance, and later service records match the motorcycle delivered.

Weight and fuel capacity: two different kinds of advantage

Hero lists the standard Xtreme at 139.5 kg kerb weight. Bajaj lists 148 kg for the Pulsar single-disc and 150 kg for the twin-disc. The difference is 8.5 kg against the single-disc Pulsar and 10.5 kg against the twin-disc on the manufacturers’ figures.

A lower listed weight can make a motorcycle easier to move out of a parking space or place on its stand, but it is not a substitute for a test ride. Seat height, handlebar leverage, tyre condition, suspension setup, and how the mass is distributed also affect confidence at low speed. Do not turn the weight table into an untested claim about handling or comfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pulsar’s listed 15-litre tank is larger than the Xtreme’s 12-litre tank by 3 litres. That can reduce the frequency of fuel stops if your actual consumption and riding conditions are similar, but tank volume alone does not establish total range. Fuel use varies with speed, traffic, load, tyre pressure, weather, and maintenance. A larger tank also means more fuel weight when full, so compare the motorcycles in the condition you will actually ride them.

Braking hardware is trim-dependent

The Pulsar 150 requires a careful trim check. The single-disc specification uses a 260 mm front disc and a rear drum. The twin-disc specification increases the front disc to 280 mm and adds a 230 mm rear disc. Those are materially different brake packages, so a “Pulsar 150” quote without the trim name is incomplete.

The standard Xtreme 160R page lists a 276 mm front disc and a 220 mm rear disc. That gives the Hero a listed disc at both ends in this comparison, while the Pulsar’s rear hardware depends on the selected version. Confirm whether the showroom unit has the equipment shown in the brochure, and check for any regional or model-year variation before paying a booking amount.

Disc diameter and brake type do not provide a stopping-distance result. Brake-pad compound, tyre grip, road surface, ABS calibration, rider technique, and load all matter. During a legal, controlled test ride, check lever feel, progressive response, straight-line stability, and whether you can comfortably modulate the rear brake.

Prices: use the date, city, and trim together

Bajaj Auto’s announcement dated 24 December 2025 gave the following ex-showroom Delhi prices for the updated Pulsar 150 range:

Variant named in the announcement Ex-showroom Delhi price How to interpret it
SD ₹1,08,772 Dated Delhi ex-showroom figure; not an on-road quote
SD UG ₹1,11,669 Dated Delhi ex-showroom figure; not an on-road quote
TD UG ₹1,15,481 Dated Delhi ex-showroom figure; not an on-road quote

Read the full Bajaj announcement for the date and scope. Registration, insurance, taxes, handling charges where permitted, accessories, and finance costs can change the amount you actually pay. Prices may also change after the announcement or differ outside Delhi.

Hero’s standard Xtreme 160R product information directs shoppers to a nearby showroom for exact current pricing. Its Delhi price guidance page should not be treated as a universal on-road figure or mixed with the separate 4V model’s pricing. Request a written quote for the exact standard 2-valve variant, including insurance, registration, extended warranty, and every optional item.

Fuel economy: there is no verified winner here

The available official specifications do not provide an independent, directly comparable real-world fuel-economy test for these two motorcycles. A third-party page may publish mileage numbers, but without a common route, speed, load, fuel method, tyre pressures, and test protocol, those figures are not settled facts. Do not choose one model solely because an online listing promises a particular kilometres-per-litre result.

For a useful personal comparison, reset both trip meters, fill at the same pump, maintain the recommended tyre pressures, and ride a similar mix of traffic for several hundred kilometres. Record litres added at the next fill and calculate kilometres divided by litres. Treat the result as your use case, not a laboratory rating, and keep the two motorcycles’ service condition and riding route as similar as possible.

Which motorcycle suits which rider?

Pick the standard Xtreme 160R when these priorities lead

  • You want the higher manufacturer-listed peak output in this two-valve comparison.
  • You prefer the lower listed kerb weight for easier manual manoeuvring.
  • You want a rear disc on the standard specification rather than selecting a twin-disc Pulsar trim.
  • You are willing to verify local price and availability because the official page asks you to obtain a showroom quote.

Those are specification-led reasons. Use a ride to evaluate reach to the controls, clutch effort, steering response, suspension reaction, and heat management instead of assuming the numbers answer those questions.

Pick the Pulsar 150 when these priorities lead

  • You value the larger 15-litre stated tank and are comfortable checking real consumption before estimating range.
  • You want a choice between a lighter-equipment single-disc version and a twin-disc version.
  • The local dealer’s written on-road quote, finance terms, and availability are better for the exact trim you want.
  • You prefer the Pulsar’s riding position and control feel after comparing it directly with the Hero.

The Pulsar’s larger tank does not guarantee better economy, and the twin-disc version’s extra hardware changes its listed weight. Keep those trade-offs visible when comparing offers.

How to compare showroom motorcycles step by step

  1. Write down the exact names. Ask the dealer to state Pulsar SD, SD UG, or TD UG, and confirm that the Hero is the standard Xtreme 160R 2-valve rather than the Xtreme 160R 4V.
  2. Request an itemised quote. Separate ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, accessories, warranty products, finance charges, and any handling or logistics line. Ask which charges are mandatory and which are optional.
  3. Match the equipment to the quote. Inspect the Pulsar’s front and rear brakes and the Xtreme’s front and rear discs. Photograph the VIN and equipment list only after obtaining the dealer’s permission.
  4. Check manufacturing and registration details. Ask for the month and year of manufacture, warranty start date, and the process for registering a motorcycle purchased in your state or union territory.
  5. Ride both on the same day if possible. Use a route that includes a slow U-turn, a rough patch, a moderate-speed section, and a controlled stop. Evaluate reach, balance, clutch action, braking modulation, and visibility rather than chasing a single acceleration impression.
  6. Ask service questions in writing. Request the scheduled service intervals, consumables covered by the warranty, roadside-assistance terms, and the price of the first few services from the same authorised outlet.
  7. Recalculate the final decision. Compare the complete on-road total, expected fuel-stop frequency, insurance renewal cost, and the value of the equipment you will actually use. Do not compare a Delhi ex-showroom figure with an on-road quote from another city.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating every Xtreme 160R as the same bike

The 2-valve standard model and 4V model have different outputs and are listed separately by Hero. Keep their specifications and prices in separate notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: comparing a single-disc Pulsar with a twin-disc Pulsar without noticing

Bajaj lists different front brakes, rear brakes, and kerb weights for the two Pulsar configurations. Record the trim before comparing either equipment or price.

Mistake: calling the cheapest published price the winner

The dated Bajaj figures are ex-showroom Delhi prices from 24 December 2025. They are not current on-road prices in every city. Hero’s official guidance is to obtain an exact nearby-showroom quote.

Mistake: treating tank size as mileage

A 15-litre tank can hold more fuel than a 12-litre tank, but only a measured consumption result tells you how far either motorcycle travels in your conditions.

Mistake: declaring a handling or braking champion from a specification sheet

Weight and disc diameter are useful clues, not test results. Tyres, setup, road surface, rider input, and load can change the outcome, so ride both motorcycles before making those judgments.

Ownership questions to settle before booking

  • Availability: Is the exact trim physically available, and what is the delivery date?
  • Documentation: Does the invoice identify the same variant and equipment you inspected?
  • Insurance: Are the insured-declared value, add-ons, and deductibles clearly itemised?
  • Warranty: What actions or modifications could affect coverage, and where must warranty work be performed?
  • Service access: How far is the authorised workshop, and can it support your expected usage?
  • Ergonomics: Can both feet, the clutch, and the brake controls be used comfortably with your normal riding gear?
  • Practical load: Will your usual passenger, luggage, and commute expose a limitation that a short solo ride misses?

Final buying guidance

Start with the standard Xtreme 160R and Pulsar 150 trims that are actually available in your city, then compare their written on-road quotes. The Hero’s listed power, torque, and lower kerb weight make it the paper choice for a buyer focused on output and mass. The Pulsar’s 15-litre tank and trim flexibility make it the paper choice for a buyer focused on fewer fuel stops and equipment choice. Neither specification proves superior mileage, comfort, reliability, handling, braking distance, or service cost.

After the quote check, ride both motorcycles in comparable conditions and choose the one whose controls, balance, brake feel, and dealer support suit your daily use. If a quote identifies the Xtreme 160R 4V or a different Pulsar trim than the one you evaluated, restart the comparison rather than assuming the differences are minor.
