- Set the mirrors and sit in your normal riding posture. Check that your wrists are neutral and that you can reach the clutch, brake and switchgear without stretching.
- Ride over the roughest section of your normal route at a legal, comfortable speed. Notice whether the suspension settles without repeated bouncing and whether the seat keeps you from sliding forward.
- Make several U-turns and lane-position changes at low speed. A commuter bike should feel predictable when your feet are near the ground.
- Run the same route on the other motorcycle, with tyre pressures checked by the dealer first.
- After 20 to 30 minutes, note pressure points, heat, vibration, mirror stability and ease of mounting. A five-minute lap rarely reveals these details.
If you carry a passenger, repeat the checks with the passenger seated. Confirm that the pillion’s feet rest securely, the grab rail is usable and the rear suspension does not feel harsh or bottom out on your familiar bumps. Do not add aftermarket seat covers or accessories before deciding; they can change your impression of the standard motorcycle.
