Bajaj says it can cut operating costs by up to about 50% versus similar petrol motorcycles, but that is a company estimate—not a guaranteed saving for every rider. Your result depends on local CNG access and prices, petrol prices, riding conditions and how often you can refuel on CNG.
What the Freedom 125 is—and what “first” means
Bajaj launched the Freedom 125 in India on 5 July 2024, describing it as the world’s first CNG-integrated motorcycle. Its CNG system is built into the motorcycle rather than being a generic aftermarket conversion; Bajaj says the tank and kit are integrated within a trellis frame. The bike can run on either CNG or petrol, with petrol serving as a backup and range extender. Bajaj Auto’s launch announcement presents the product and its specifications.
How much can it save on fuel?
Bajaj’s estimate is up to approximately 50% lower operating costs compared with similar petrol motorcycles. The company’s announcements do not disclose the fuel prices, comparison models, mileage assumptions, riding pattern or calculation method behind that estimate. Treat it as a potential comparative saving, not a promise that every owner’s fuel bill will be halved. The 30 July 2024 rollout announcement uses the “up to ~50%” formulation.
To estimate your own fuel-cost difference, compare the cost of covering your typical monthly distance using local CNG and petrol prices. Include the distances you would need to travel to refuel, and account for any trips when CNG is unavailable or queues make petrol more practical. The available sources do not establish a current city-by-city station map or a universal payback period.

Fuel capacity and claimed range
Bajaj specifies a 2 kg CNG supply and a 2-litre petrol tank. It claims more than 200 km from CNG and more than 130 km from petrol, for a combined claimed range of 330 km. Those are manufacturer figures; actual range varies with speed, load, traffic, route and riding style. The petrol tank is a reserve and range extender, not a second full-size tank.
HT Auto’s published road test reported 160–170 km in CNG mode across its runs, about 120 km on a high-speed Pune-to-Mumbai run, and approximately 280 km combined in its test cycle—below Bajaj’s 330 km claim. These are that outlet’s observations under its own test conditions, not a standardized result or a forecast for every rider. HT Auto’s Freedom 125 page and review contains its test reporting.

What ownership depends on
CNG station access
The fuel-cost case works best when CNG stations are convenient on your regular routes. Check station locations, opening hours and likely queues near home and work before choosing the bike. If CNG access is unreliable, you may use petrol more often and achieve less of the potential saving.
Daily distance and refuelling pattern
Consider how far you ride between refuelling opportunities and whether the reported real-world range suits your commute. A rider who regularly travels beyond convenient CNG access may value the petrol reserve, but should not mistake it for a large petrol tank.

Performance, comfort and purchase cost
Compare the motorcycle’s performance and comfort on the routes you actually ride, alongside the price difference from a comparable petrol bike. Bajaj’s cost estimate alone cannot establish your payback period: that requires your local fuel prices, distance, fuel use and purchase costs.
Tank testing and recertification
Bajaj says the CNG tank is integrated into the frame and that the motorcycle underwent rigorous testing. HT Auto reports Bajaj’s claim that 11 tests were conducted, including frontal and side-impact tests, a 600 mm vertical drop and a truck run-over test. The reviewed sources do not provide independent certification results or test protocols. HT Auto also says the cylinder requires recertification every two years; confirm the current requirement with Bajaj or an authorized dealer before relying on that interval.

At launch in July 2024, Bajaj listed three variants at the following ex-showroom Delhi prices. These are historical launch prices, not current quotes; prices vary by date and location. HT Auto’s product page displays different pricing, so check with a local dealer for the price applicable to your purchase.

Is the Freedom 125 a good fit?
The Freedom 125 is most compelling for riders who can refuel conveniently on CNG and whose actual usage makes the fuel-price difference matter. Before deciding, check local CNG availability and queues, compare current CNG and petrol prices, assess real-world range against your routes, and weigh the purchase price against a similar petrol motorcycle. Bajaj’s estimate indicates the potential; your riding and refuelling conditions determine whether you realize it.
