Bajaj Freedom 125 vs Hero Xtreme 160R 4V: Which Bike Should You Buy?

The Freedom 125 suits CNG-accessible, cost-focused commuting; the Xtreme 160R 4V suits riders wanting higher stated output and dual-channel ABS. Compare trims and local on-road prices before deciding.

Choose the Bajaj Freedom 125 if dependable CNG access and lower claimed running cost matter most. Choose the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V if you want substantially higher stated power, five gears, dual-channel ABS and disc brakes at both ends. They are not direct substitutes: the Freedom is a dual-fuel commuter, while the Xtreme is a petrol-powered 160-class motorcycle. Your route, refuelling options, braking-equipment preference, riding expectations and current on-road quote should decide the purchase.

First, clarify the models being compared

“Hero Xtreme 160R” is used for several model generations and trims. This comparison uses the Xtreme 160R 4V, the version for which Hero publishes a 163.2 cc four-valve engine, 16.9 PS, 14.6 Nm and dual-channel ABS. Earlier or differently equipped Xtreme 160R versions can have different specifications.

The Bajaj model is the Freedom 125 NG04 range. Bajaj lists three trims—Disc LED, Drum LED and Drum—with equipment differences that affect braking hardware, lighting and the instrument cluster. A specification quoted for the Disc LED should not be assumed to apply to every Freedom 125.

Quick verdict: which bike is better for you?

Prioritise this Better fit Why
Regular access to CNG and the lowest possible fuel bill Bajaj Freedom 125 It combines a 2 kg CNG tank with a 2 L petrol tank, and Bajaj claims about 50% operating-cost savings against similar petrol motorcycles.
Stronger published output and more performance headroom Hero Xtreme 160R 4V Its 163.2 cc engine is rated at 16.9 PS and 14.6 Nm, considerably above the Freedom’s 125-class positioning.
Dual-channel ABS and disc brakes front and rear Hero Xtreme 160R 4V Hero lists dual-channel ABS, a 276 mm front disc and a 220 mm rear disc.
Simple city commuting where CNG stations are convenient Bajaj Freedom 125 The dual-fuel layout can reduce petrol use, but the benefit depends on finding CNG when you need it.
One motorcycle for spirited weekend riding Hero Xtreme 160R 4V Its larger engine, five-speed gearbox and higher output suit faster open-road riding better on paper.

There is no universal winner. The Freedom’s advantage is a fuel-system and running-cost proposition; the Xtreme’s is an output and braking-specification proposition.

Fuel system and real-world running cost

Bajaj Freedom 125: CNG plus petrol

Bajaj describes the Freedom 125 as a CNG/petrol dual-fuel motorcycle. Its current variant information lists 12.5 litres/2 kg of CNG capacity and a separate 2 litre petrol tank for all three NG04 trims. The CNG cylinder and kit are integrated into a trellis frame, which Bajaj says was securely housed and rigorously tested. That sentence is a manufacturer safety statement, not an independent crash or certification result.

In its 5 July 2024 launch announcement, Bajaj claimed more than 200 km from 2 kg of CNG and more than 130 km from the 2 L petrol tank. Those are company-stated ranges, not controlled independent tests. Payload, traffic, tyre pressure, temperature, riding style and the point at which a rider changes fuels will alter the distance you actually obtain.

Bajaj also claimed approximately 50% lower operating cost than comparable petrol motorcycles. The percentage is not a guarantee of personal savings: it depends on the CNG and petrol prices in your city, how often you can refuel with CNG, station queues, and the motorcycle’s real consumption. A rider who frequently runs on petrol or must make a long detour to a CNG station will see a smaller benefit.

Hero Xtreme 160R 4V: conventional petrol use

The Xtreme 160R 4V is a petrol motorcycle. Hero’s 2026 brochure lists a 12 L fuel tank; the product page identifies the four-valve, air-oil-cooled engine and five-speed transmission. The supplied specifications do not establish an independently measured fuel-economy result for a like-for-like comparison with the Freedom.

For a commuter, calculate cost from your own route rather than assuming that the Freedom’s claim applies automatically. Record your weekly kilometres, identify reliable CNG stations along the route, and compare the resulting CNG-plus-petrol spend with the Xtreme’s petrol requirement using current local prices.

Engine output, gearing and riding character

Published numbers

Specification Bajaj Freedom 125 Hero Xtreme 160R 4V
Engine displacement 125-class motorcycle; exact displacement figure is not stated in the supplied variant information 163.2 cc on Hero’s product page; 163.24 cc in the 2026 brochure
Maximum power Not stated as a comparable output figure in the supplied launch material 16.9 PS (12.4 kW) at 8,500 rpm; brochure lists 12.40 kW at 8,500 ± 500 rpm
Maximum torque Not stated as a comparable figure in the supplied material 14.6 Nm at 6,500 rpm, with the brochure giving a ±500 rpm qualification
Transmission Not stated in the supplied variant comparison Five-speed
Cooling and valves Not stated in the supplied material Air-oil-cooled, four-valve engine

These figures make the Xtreme the specification-led choice for acceleration potential, overtaking reserve and sustained open-road riding. They do not prove a particular 0–60 km/h time, top speed or stopping distance; no controlled head-to-head test data is established here.

What the difference feels like in use

The Freedom is designed around efficient everyday transport. Its 125-class engine and dual-fuel system are most relevant in traffic, on short commutes and on routes where keeping fuel expenditure predictable matters more than rapid acceleration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Xtreme’s additional displacement and 16.9 PS rating provide more performance headroom for carrying a passenger, climbing at speed and joining faster traffic. A test ride is still important: clutch weight, throttle response, vibration, seat comfort and gearing can make two motorcycles with different specifications feel very different.

Brakes, ABS and trim-specific equipment

Freedom 125 variants

Bajaj’s current comparison lists the following NG04 equipment:

Freedom trim Front brake and lighting Rear brake and display
NG04 Disc LED 240 mm front disc; LED headlamp 130 mm rear drum with CBS; full inverted LCD with connectivity
NG04 Drum LED 130 mm front drum; LED headlamp 130 mm rear drum with CBS; small LCD without connectivity
NG04 Drum 130 mm front drum; bulb headlamp 110 mm rear drum with CBS; small LCD without connectivity

CBS links braking force between the front and rear wheels, but it is not the same system as dual-channel ABS. Verify that the trim and equipment shown on a dealer quotation match the sale-market motorcycle you will receive.

Xtreme 160R 4V braking hardware

Hero lists dual-channel ABS, a 276 mm front disc and a 220 mm rear disc for the Xtreme 160R 4V. The 2026 brochure describes both as petal discs. This is a stronger published braking specification than the Freedom trims that use CBS and drum brakes. It remains a specification comparison, not proof that one motorcycle will always stop in a shorter distance: tyres, road surface, rider input and maintenance matter.

Dimensions and day-to-day practicality

Measure Bajaj Freedom 125 Hero Xtreme 160R 4V
Seat height 825 mm 803 mm
Ground clearance Not stated in the supplied Freedom comparison 165 mm
Curb mass Not stated in the supplied Freedom comparison 147.5 kg in Hero’s 2026 brochure
Front tyre 90/80-17 tubeless Not stated in the supplied specifications
Rear tyre 120/70-16 tubeless Not stated in the supplied specifications
Fuel capacity 2 kg CNG plus 2 L petrol 12 L petrol

The Freedom’s 825 mm seat is 22 mm taller than the Xtreme’s stated 803 mm seat. Seat width and suspension sag also affect reach, so shorter riders should sit on both motorcycles rather than deciding from the number alone. The Xtreme’s published 165 mm ground clearance may be useful on broken roads and speed humps, while its 147.5 kg curb mass should be considered when pushing or parking it.

Price: use historical figures only as a reference

Bajaj’s 5 July 2024 launch release listed Delhi ex-showroom prices of ₹95,000 for Drum, ₹1,05,000 for Drum LED and ₹1,10,000 for Disc LED. These were prices on the release date, not current purchase quotes.

Hero’s product page presents ex-showroom variant pricing with a city selector and notes that on-road cost depends on location, RTO charges, insurance and dealer pricing. Because the two manufacturers publish prices differently and the figures change, naming a current price winner without same-city quotations would be misleading.

How to compare the actual purchase cost

  1. Select the exact Freedom trim and the exact Xtreme 160R 4V variant you would buy.
  2. Request itemised on-road quotations from dealers in the same city on the same date.
  3. Check ex-showroom price, registration and RTO charges, insurance, optional accessories, handling fees and any finance costs separately.
  4. Compare the final payable amount, not an old launch price or an ex-showroom figure from another city.

Which bike suits each type of buyer?

Choose the Freedom 125 when CNG access is genuinely convenient

  • Your daily route passes a dependable CNG station, or you have another practical refuelling option near home or work.
  • You want a commuter first and do not require strong high-speed performance.
  • You accept that the lowest running cost depends on using CNG rather than petrol most of the time.
  • You are willing to choose the Disc LED trim if a front disc and connectivity are important.

Do not buy the Freedom solely because of the advertised percentage saving if CNG is difficult to obtain. A dual-fuel motorcycle cannot deliver its full cost advantage when your routine forces frequent petrol use.

Choose the Xtreme 160R 4V when performance and braking hardware lead

  • You regularly ride on faster roads, carry a passenger, or want more overtaking reserve.
  • The published 16.9 PS, 14.6 Nm and five-speed gearbox match your expectations better than a 125-class commuter.
  • Dual-channel ABS and front/rear discs are priorities.
  • You prefer the lower listed 803 mm seat height, subject to the actual riding position.

Its petrol-only layout means your fuel bill will track petrol prices and usage; the available specifications do not support promising a specific monthly economy.

Buying checklist before you pay

  1. Confirm the model name: make sure the quotation says Freedom 125 NG04 or Xtreme 160R 4V, not an older or differently equipped generation.
  2. Inspect the fuel plan: map CNG stations along your normal route and identify a petrol fallback for the Freedom.
  3. Match equipment to the trim: check whether the Freedom has a front disc, LED headlamp and connected display, and verify the Xtreme’s ABS and disc-brake specification.
  4. Take a test ride: assess seat reach, low-speed balance, clutch action, turning radius, vibration, passenger space and braking feel.
  5. Get a written, itemised quote: use the same city and date for both motorcycles.
  6. Ask about warranty conditions: Hero’s 2026 brochure displays a five-year warranty badge, with conditions applying; read the dealer’s current warranty terms rather than assuming every use case is covered.
  7. Budget for ownership: include insurance renewal, scheduled service, tyres, brake wear and any CNG-related refuelling time.

What the published claims do—and do not—tell you

Bajaj’s launch release also stated approximately 26.7% lower CO₂, 85% lower non-methane hydrocarbons and 43% lower NOx than petrol. These are manufacturer-published comparisons; the release does not establish an independently verified lifecycle-emissions result. They should not be read as a guarantee for every route, fuel mix or maintenance condition.

The same release said more than 75% of two-wheeler customers rate fuel efficiency as a key attribute, but it did not identify the underlying study or methodology in the supplied material. Treat it as a statement in Bajaj’s announcement, not as a universal survey result.

Likewise, the Freedom’s claimed ranges and savings and the Xtreme’s output figures are useful for understanding each manufacturer’s position. They are not substitutes for a local cost calculation, a test ride or an independently controlled performance test.

Final buying recommendation

For a city commuter with reliable CNG availability, the Bajaj Freedom 125—preferably the exact trim whose brake and display equipment you have verified—offers the more rational fuel-cost case. Its advertised 200-plus-kilometre CNG range and approximately 50% saving are Bajaj claims, so validate them against your own fuel prices and route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bajaj Freedom 125 faster than the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V?

The supplied specifications do not provide a controlled acceleration comparison. Hero publishes 16.9 PS and 14.6 Nm for the Xtreme 160R 4V, while the Freedom is positioned as a 125-class commuter, so the Xtreme has the higher stated performance potential.

Does every Bajaj Freedom 125 have a front disc brake?

No. The NG04 Disc LED has a 240 mm front disc. The NG04 Drum LED and NG04 Drum use front drums, with other equipment differences between those trims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Freedom 125’s 50% saving guaranteed?

No. Bajaj’s approximately 50% figure is a manufacturer claim against similar petrol motorcycles. Your result depends on local CNG and petrol prices, refuelling access, riding conditions and how much petrol you use.

Which motorcycle has the lower seat height?

Hero lists an 803 mm seat height for the Xtreme 160R 4V. Bajaj lists 825 mm for the Freedom 125. Actual reach also depends on seat width and suspension sag, so sit on both before buying.
