Bajaj Dominar 400 vs Suzuki V-Strom SX: Which India-Spec Tourer Fits Your Riding?

The Dominar 400 leads on published power and ride modes, while the V-Strom SX lists lower mass, 205mm clearance and a 19-inch front wheel. Here is how to choose between them in India.

Short answer: choose the current Bajaj Dominar 400 if engine output, a six-speed sports-tourer specification and multiple ride modes matter most. Choose the Suzuki V-Strom SX if you value a listed 167kg kerb mass, 205mm ground clearance and a 19-inch front wheel for a lighter, more adventure-oriented specification. Neither is objectively better for every rider, and the published prices are not directly comparable without a dated city quote.

This is an India-market comparison of the current versions shown in 2026 manufacturer material. The Dominar name is now misleading: Bajaj’s 22 April 2026 announcement and current product information identify a 349.13cc engine, not the earlier 373.3cc unit. Suzuki’s India V-Strom SX uses a 249cc engine.

The decision in one minute

The two motorcycles target different priorities. Bajaj gives the Dominar a substantially higher published output, a 13-litre tank, six-speed transmission and Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road ride modes. Suzuki counters with a lower listed kerb mass, more ground clearance and a 19-inch front wheel, all of which point toward an easier-to-manage, trail-oriented setup on paper.

Those are specification advantages, not proof of superior real-world acceleration, comfort, handling, fuel economy or reliability. The available evidence is manufacturer-published. A test ride on your usual roads, plus a written local on-road quotation, should decide the purchase.

What changed on the current Dominar 400?

Do not carry older Dominar comparisons into this decision. Bajaj’s 22 April 2026 India announcement says the model has been resized to a 350cc engine, and the current product page gives the precise displacement as 349.13cc. Earlier 373.3cc and 40PS figures describe a previous version and should not be used as current specifications.

The model name remains “Dominar 400”, so a listing or video that repeats 373.3cc may be referring to an older motorcycle. Ask the dealer to confirm the model year, engine displacement on the invoice and the exact equipment included in the quoted price.

Engine output: where the Dominar has the paper advantage

Bajaj lists 40.6 PS at 9,000 rpm and 33.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm for the 349.13cc Dominar. Suzuki lists 26.5 PS at 9,300 rpm and 22.2 Nm at 7,300 rpm for the 249cc V-Strom SX. On the published numbers, the Dominar has the clear output advantage in both power and torque.

That difference matters when your priorities include carrying luggage, making overtakes with a passenger or maintaining speed on fast, open roads. It does not establish a specific acceleration time or a guaranteed ability to hold a particular cruising speed; no comparable instrumented test is established here. Weight, gearing, aerodynamics, altitude and load all affect what you feel from the seat.

The Dominar’s liquid-cooled DOHC configuration and the V-Strom’s oil-cooled SOHC configuration also describe different engineering layouts, not a ranking of long-term durability. Service quality, maintenance intervals and local parts support are not established by these specifications.

Mass, wheels and clearance: why the V-Strom looks more trail-oriented

Suzuki lists the V-Strom SX at 167kg kerb mass, while the cited Dominar material does not provide a verified current kerb figure. That means you can accurately call the Suzuki the lighter documented motorcycle, but you cannot state a precise weight gap from these sources.

The V-Strom’s 205mm ground clearance and 100/90-19 front wheel, paired with a 140/70-17 tubeless rear, are specification clues for uneven roads and a more adventure-styled stance. A larger front wheel can help a motorcycle roll over surface changes, but the number alone is not an off-road performance test. Suspension travel, damping, tyre compound, rider technique and terrain determine what happens beyond the pavement.

For urban manoeuvres, parking and low-speed U-turns, the listed mass may be more relevant than peak output. Still, seat height, centre-of-gravity feel and handlebar leverage are not established in the cited specifications, so sit on both motorcycles and perform slow-speed turns before deciding.

Touring equipment and everyday usability

Dominar 400 equipment

The current Dominar lists a 13-litre fuel tank, a six-speed gearbox and four ride modes: Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road. The modes suggest that Bajaj intends the bike to adapt its response to different surfaces or conditions, but the available information does not define the exact throttle, traction or ABS changes in each mode. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the mode-selection procedure and explain which systems each mode alters.

V-Strom SX equipment

The V-Strom SX lists a 12-litre tank, a six-speed transmission and a 19-inch front wheel. Its 167kg kerb specification and 205mm clearance support the case for riders who want a less intimidating, more upright adventure-tourer format. Suzuki lists dual-channel ABS as standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What tank size does not tell you

A 13-litre tank is only one litre larger than the Suzuki’s 12-litre tank. It does not establish a longer range because fuel consumption, usable reserve, riding speed, payload and traffic conditions are not supplied. Do not choose between them on tank capacity alone; ask owners in your area for comparable fuel logs if range is decisive.

How to interpret the headline numbers

Displacement is the size of the engine, not a direct promise of speed. The Dominar’s 349.13cc is larger than the V-Strom’s 249cc, and its published power and torque are higher, but the figures are recorded at different rpm points. A motorcycle can feel stronger at low revs, smoother at cruising speed or easier to control in traffic without having the higher peak number.

Kerb mass normally includes the motorcycle in its ready-to-ride form, but the two manufacturers’ definitions should still be checked with the dealer. Suzuki’s 167kg figure is useful for comparison because it is published; it should not be turned into an exact Dominar-versus-Suzuki weight difference when Bajaj’s cited page does not provide a matching current number.

Ground clearance is the space below the motorcycle at a stated measuring point. Suzuki’s 205mm figure can reduce the chance of striking an obstacle, yet it says nothing about suspension travel, underbody protection or tyre grip. Treat the 19-inch front wheel and clearance as clues about intended use, not as proof that the V-Strom will outperform the Dominar on a particular trail.

Price: why there is no clean winner

Published prices conflict by page and location, so treat every figure as a dated reference rather than a final bill.

Motorcycle and reference Displayed price Qualification
Bajaj Dominar 400, Bajaj release dated 22 April 2026 ₹2,03,214 Ex-showroom Delhi
Bajaj current product page, figure near the heading ₹2,08,270 Displayed on the current page; the same page’s FAQ shows ₹2,03,214
Suzuki V-Strom SX, India page ₹1.9 lakh Indicative Delhi price
Suzuki official location page ₹2,00,818 Location-specific displayed figure

Suzuki says its indicative Delhi figure is location dependent and does not include extended warranty, zero-depreciation insurance or accessories beyond the stated mirror set and side stand. Bajaj’s two displayed figures make it especially important to request a written, current quotation before comparing totals.

Compare ex-showroom with ex-showroom and on-road with on-road. Registration, insurance, optional accessories, handling charges and local taxes can change the amount you actually finance. Ask each dealer to itemise those lines and date the quotation.

A third-party comparison page refreshed on 12 October 2026 repeats the current 349.13cc Dominar specification but carries price figures that conflict with the manufacturer pages. Use the official, city-specific quotation as the deciding document, and confirm whether the motorcycle offered is old stock or the current version.

Which rider should choose the Dominar?

  • Choose the Dominar on paper if output is your first priority. Its 40.6 PS and 33.2 Nm figures are substantially higher than the Suzuki’s listed 26.5 PS and 22.2 Nm.
  • Choose it if you want selectable ride modes. Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road are listed on the current Bajaj page, although the exact intervention of each mode should be confirmed at the dealership.
  • Choose it if the 13-litre tank suits your planning. It is larger than the Suzuki’s listed tank, but it is not proof of greater range.
  • Choose it only after confirming the current engine. Make sure the paperwork says 349.13cc rather than relying on an older 373.3cc review.

Which rider should choose the V-Strom SX?

  • Choose the V-Strom if low documented mass matters. Suzuki lists 167kg kerb mass, which can be valuable during parking, tight turns and frequent stops.
  • Choose it if the chassis specification matches your roads. A 205mm clearance figure and 19-inch front wheel are useful clues for broken pavement, gravel approaches and an adventure-styled riding position, without guaranteeing off-road capability.
  • Choose it if the lower published output is sufficient. The 249cc engine’s 26.5 PS and 22.2 Nm may fit riders who prefer manageable performance over maximum acceleration, but test the bike with your intended load.
  • Choose it after checking the actual local price. Suzuki publishes more than one Delhi-related figure, and the indicative amount excludes several ownership add-ons.

What the specifications cannot answer

No comparable real-world mileage figure is established for either motorcycle. Tank capacity and displacement cannot be converted into a trustworthy range estimate without measured consumption under the same conditions.

The available material also does not establish highway comfort, heat management, pillion comfort, handling balance, service expense, reliability or resale value. Those are important buying questions, but assigning a winner on them would go beyond the documented facts. Seek local owner records and inspect service estimates for your city rather than treating a brochure feature as proof.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Which model year and exact variant is physically available, and does the Dominar invoice state 349.13cc?
  • Is the quoted amount ex-showroom or on-road, and which city’s registration and tax assumptions were used?
  • Does the price include insurance, extended warranty, accessories, handling fees and the stated mirror or side-stand equipment?
  • What does each Dominar ride mode change, and can the salesperson demonstrate the selection procedure?
  • What are the scheduled service items and estimated labour and consumable costs for your city?
  • Can you ride both motorcycles with the same luggage or passenger load on a route that includes traffic, a speed breaker and rough pavement?

These questions do not create missing performance data, but they prevent a brochure comparison from being mistaken for a complete ownership forecast.

A practical test-ride plan

  1. Verify identity. Read the invoice or registration paperwork and confirm that the Dominar is the current 349.13cc version. Record the V-Strom’s exact variant and model year.
  2. Check the starting position. With both motorcycles stationary, assess reach to the ground, handlebar width, clutch effort and whether you can move the bike backward comfortably.
  3. Repeat the same low-speed route. Include a U-turn, a speed breaker and a short rough section. Note steering effort, balance and how easily each bike changes direction.
  4. Test the engine with your normal load. Ride alone first, then repeat with luggage or a passenger if that is how you will tour. Observe smoothness and overtaking confidence instead of chasing a single peak-speed impression.
  5. Try the Dominar’s modes safely. Change between Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road only where the manual permits and where traffic conditions are controlled. Ask what each mode changes.
  6. Use both brakes progressively. Confirm lever feel and ABS operation in a safe, legal environment; do not deliberately provoke a lock-up on public roads.
  7. Inspect practical details. Check mirror visibility, switchgear, luggage mounting points, fuel-filler access and passenger grab points. These details can matter more than a one-litre tank difference.
  8. Get written prices. Request an itemised on-road quote for the same city, insurance coverage and accessory list from both dealers.

How to make the final choice

Your highest priority Specification-led direction Question to settle before paying
Engine performance and loaded touring Dominar 400 Does its riding position remain comfortable on your longest planned route?
Lower documented kerb mass V-Strom SX Does the 249cc engine provide enough reserve with passenger and luggage?
Broken roads and adventure styling V-Strom SX Do the actual tyres and suspension feel suitable on your regular surfaces?
Selectable riding modes Dominar 400 What specifically changes in each mode, and will you use those settings?
Lowest purchase cost Neither can be declared from the displayed prices Which dealer gives the lower, itemised on-road total on the same date?

Use the table as a starting point, not a substitute for riding both motorcycles. A rider who regularly carries luggage may value the Dominar’s output, while a shorter-distance commuter may value the V-Strom’s listed mass and wheel configuration more.

Bottom line

On published engine and touring specifications, the current Bajaj Dominar 400 is the stronger choice for riders who put power, torque and selectable modes first. On published chassis clues, the Suzuki V-Strom SX makes the stronger case for a lighter, higher-clearance, 19-inch-front-wheel adventure-touring format.

The Dominar’s “400” badge does not mean a 400cc engine in the current India version; verify the 349.13cc specification. Because both manufacturers display location- and page-dependent prices, obtain current on-road quotes and test ride both before choosing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the current Bajaj Dominar 400 really a 400cc motorcycle?

No. Bajaj’s 22 April 2026 announcement describes the resized model as a 350cc motorcycle, and its current India product page specifies 349.13cc. Older 373.3cc comparisons refer to a previous version.

Which motorcycle has more power and torque?

The Dominar lists 40.6 PS at 9,000 rpm and 33.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The V-Strom SX lists 26.5 PS at 9,300 rpm and 22.2 Nm at 7,300 rpm. These are manufacturer figures, not independent acceleration results.

Which is lighter, the Dominar 400 or V-Strom SX?

Suzuki lists the V-Strom SX at 167kg kerb mass. The cited current Dominar material does not provide a verified matching kerb figure, so a precise weight gap cannot be stated.

Is the V-Strom SX better for off-road riding?

Its 205mm ground clearance, 19-inch front wheel and adventure-oriented specification support that interpretation on paper. They do not prove superior off-road performance; suspension, tyres, terrain and rider technique also matter.

Which bike has the larger fuel tank?

The Dominar lists 13 litres and the V-Strom SX 12 litres. The one-litre difference does not establish longer range because comparable real-world fuel economy and usable reserve figures are not available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the current India prices?

Bajaj’s 22 April 2026 release lists ₹2,03,214 ex-showroom Delhi, while its current page also displays ₹2,08,270 near the heading. Suzuki shows an indicative Delhi price of ₹1.9 lakh and another official location page shows ₹2,00,818. Get dated, itemised local on-road quotes.

Do both motorcycles have dual-channel ABS?

Yes. Both current India manufacturer pages list dual-channel ABS. That confirms equipment, not identical braking distances or electronic calibration.

Which one should I buy for touring?

Choose the Dominar if published output and selectable ride modes are your priorities. Choose the V-Strom if its documented 167kg mass, 205mm clearance and 19-inch front wheel better match your roads. Test ride both with your normal load before deciding.

The Bottom Line

Verdict: the current Dominar 400 leads on published power, torque and ride-mode choice, while the V-Strom SX leads on documented mass, clearance and front-wheel format. Verify the Dominar’s 349.13cc engine, compare same-city on-road quotes and test ride both before buying.
