Bajaj Dominar 400 vs KTM 390 Duke (350cc): Which One Fits Your Riding?

The Dominar 400 costs less on the announced Delhi ex-showroom figures and is positioned for touring; the 350cc KTM 390 Duke offers a modest output edge and more listed electronic equipment. Here is how to choose without confusing either model with the 399cc Duke R.

Short answer: choose the Bajaj Dominar 400 if your priority is a lower announced price and a motorcycle presented for sports touring; choose the KTM 390 Duke if you value its larger list of electronic rider aids, adjustable suspension and a street-focused brief. Neither is an evidence-based universal winner. The current India-market versions compared here are both approximately 350cc, despite the “400” and “390” names, and the sensible choice depends on your budget, route and ergonomics after riding both.

There is also a separate 399cc KTM 390 Duke R. Its specifications must not be mixed with the base 350cc Duke in this comparison. Prices below are dated Delhi ex-showroom announcements, not guaranteed on-road amounts.

Current specifications at a glance

The model names are potentially misleading in 2026. Bajaj’s current Dominar 400 uses a 349.13cc engine, while the base KTM 390 Duke sold in India uses a 349.32cc engine. The “390” badge therefore does not mean that the base Duke has a 399cc engine. KTM continues to sell a separate 399cc 390 Duke R, which is covered later.

What exactly changed in the current models?

Dominar 400: a 350cc engine with the same touring identity

Bajaj’s current product page describes the Dominar 400 as a sports-tourer. It lists a 349.13cc liquid-cooled DOHC engine producing 40.6 PS at 9,000 rpm and 33.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The same page highlights upright ergonomics, USD forks, twin-channel ABS, traction control, four ride modes and touring equipment. Those descriptions explain the intended use, but they are not an independent assessment of long-distance comfort or handling.

Bajaj’s 22 April 2026 announcement introduced the 350cc version at ₹2,03,214 ex-showroom Delhi. The announcement describes the model as making the company’s touring proposition more accessible. Sarang Kanade, President – MCBU, Bajaj Auto Ltd., said: “Dominar has always stood for our touring DNA – powerful, capable, and built for the long road. With the new Dominar 400 with 350cc engine we are staying true to that promise while making it significantly more accessible.” This is a manufacturer statement about positioning, not a comparative test conclusion.

KTM 390 Duke: a 350cc base Duke with a broader electronic package

KTM India lists 349.32cc for the current base 390 Duke, with 41.5 PS at 8,600 rpm and 33.5 Nm at 7,000 rpm. Its product page lists ride modes, traction control, cornering ABS, Supermoto ABS, quickshifter+, cruise control and adjustable suspension. The feature list is materially longer than the Dominar’s published list, although equipment can vary by model year or market specification. Ask the dealer to demonstrate each function on the exact motorcycle being quoted.

The 20 April 2026 Bajaj/KTM announcement gives the 350cc Duke an announced Delhi ex-showroom price of ₹2,77,268. It presents the Duke as a way to bring KTM’s aspirational performance range to more riders. Manik Nangia, President, Probiking, Bajaj Auto Ltd., described the expansion in promotional terms; that statement should not be read as neutral proof that the Duke is faster, more reliable or more comfortable than the Dominar.

Do not confuse the base Duke with the 390 Duke R

The same 2026 range announcement says the KTM 390 Duke R continues alongside the 350cc base Duke. KTM’s brochure lists 398.63cc, 46 PS and 39 Nm for the R variant. Those numbers belong to the R, not to the 349.32cc motorcycle in the main comparison table. A listing that says only “390 Duke” can therefore be ambiguous; confirm the displacement and variant code before comparing price or performance.

Why older articles may show different Dominar figures

Bajaj’s July 2025 update described ride-by-wire, selectable ride modes, a colour LCD speedometer and touring accessories, with a stated price of ₹2,38,682 ex-showroom Delhi. That is historical model-year context. The 2026 announcement supersedes that price and identifies the current engine as 350cc, so an older review or dealer page may not describe the motorcycle you are considering.

Price: the Dominar has the lower announced entry point

What the official Delhi figures show

Using the two dated announcements, the arithmetic difference is ₹74,054: ₹2,77,268 for the 350cc KTM 390 Duke minus ₹2,03,214 for the 350cc Dominar 400. This is a comparison of announced Delhi ex-showroom prices, made on 20 and 22 April 2026 respectively. It is not a guaranteed saving at a dealership in another city, and it does not include registration, insurance, taxes charged on the invoice, accessories, financing interest or other on-road items.

Price question What is established What you must verify
Published launch price Dominar: ₹2,03,214 ex-showroom Delhi; Duke: ₹2,77,268 ex-showroom Delhi Whether the manufacturer has revised the price since the announcements
Difference ₹74,054 between those two announcements Actual difference on your dealer’s written quotation
On-road cost Not stated in the cited announcements Registration location, insurance choice, handling or documentation fees, accessories and finance charges
Finance Not established comparatively Down payment, annual percentage rate, tenure, processing fee and total repayment

How to obtain a useful local comparison

  1. Ask both dealers for a date-stamped, itemised on-road quotation for the exact displacement and model year.
  2. Check that the quotation identifies the 349.13cc Dominar or 349.32cc base Duke, rather than silently substituting a 399cc Duke R.
  3. Separate mandatory registration and insurance from optional accessories so that equipment does not make one quote look artificially cheaper.
  4. Request the final payable amount for cash and the total repayment for finance; a low monthly instalment can conceal a higher overall cost.
  5. Ask how long the quoted price is valid, because a manufacturer announcement is not a price-lock guarantee.

Engine output and what it can—and cannot—tell you

On paper, the Duke leads by 0.9 PS and 0.3 Nm. Its peak power arrives at 8,600 rpm, 400 rpm earlier than the Dominar’s stated 9,000 rpm peak, while the Dominar’s peak torque is listed at 7,500 rpm and the Duke’s at 7,000 rpm. These are useful reference points when reading specifications, but they do not describe the complete torque curve, gearing, ride-by-wire calibration, kerb weight, tyre choice or rider input.

Consequently, the published figures cannot by themselves answer questions such as which bike will launch harder, overtake more quickly in a particular gear, feel smoother in traffic or use less fuel. No neutral head-to-head measurement is established here. If performance is decisive, ride both motorcycles on the same route and compare low-speed response, mid-range roll-on, clutch effort and braking feel under the same conditions.

A sensible way to interpret the small output gap

  • Treat the Duke’s 41.5 PS and 33.5 Nm as a modest specification advantage, not a guaranteed real-world victory.
  • Treat the Dominar’s 40.6 PS and 33.2 Nm as sufficient published output for a full-size performance-oriented motorcycle, without claiming a particular touring speed or overtaking margin.
  • Pay attention to how each motorcycle delivers its output at the speeds you actually use. A commuter who rarely approaches the power peak may notice ergonomics and controls more than the last fraction of peak power.
  • Do not import 46 PS and 39 Nm from the 399cc Duke R into a comparison with the base 350cc Duke.

Equipment and chassis: where the Duke’s specification is richer

KTM’s listed rider aids

KTM lists ride modes, traction control, cornering ABS, Supermoto ABS, quickshifter+, cruise control and adjustable suspension for the 350cc 390 Duke. Together, these features give the rider more electronic and setup choices than are explicitly listed for the Dominar. Their usefulness depends on calibration, road conditions and whether you will actually use them.

  • Traction control: establish how it is selected or disabled and whether the setting is retained after the ignition is cycled.

  • Supermoto ABS: confirm which wheel’s ABS behaviour changes and the conditions in which KTM permits the setting.
  • Quickshifter+: test its operation during the permitted speed and load range; a quickshifter does not eliminate the need for correct gear choice.
  • Cruise control: verify the operating speed range and cancellation controls before assuming it suits your highway routine.
  • Adjustable suspension: ask which adjusters are present and have the settings recorded before changing them.

Dominar’s published touring-oriented kit

Bajaj lists four ride modes, traction control, twin-channel ABS, USD forks and touring equipment on the Dominar page. The company’s product positioning puts greater emphasis on an upright, long-distance role than KTM’s city-focused description. That may matter more to a rider who values a touring setup than to someone who wants to tune suspension or use multiple electronic modes in urban riding.

“Touring accessories” is a broad description, not proof that a particular pannier, top box, engine guard or mounting bracket is included in every sale. If you plan to add luggage, obtain the accessory list for your model year and verify mounting compatibility, load limits and whether fitment affects the warranty.

Touring versus spirited city riding

Why the Dominar may fit a touring brief

Bajaj explicitly positions the Dominar as a sports-tourer and highlights upright ergonomics and touring equipment. For a rider whose use includes regular intercity trips, this gives the Dominar a clear intent advantage: the manufacturer is telling you what the motorcycle was designed to do. The lower announced Delhi ex-showroom price may also leave more of the purchase budget for riding gear, luggage or travel preparation.

That positioning does not establish that every rider will find the Dominar more comfortable, that its pillion seat is better, or that it has superior highway stability. Seat comfort, wind protection, vibration, heat, luggage clearance and fuel range are not comparatively established in the cited material. Check each in person, ideally with the passenger and luggage you expect to carry.

Why the Duke may fit a city-focused rider

KTM calls the 390 Duke suitable for spirited city riding and lists a broad electronic package. The combination may appeal to someone who values active control choices, a quickshifter, cruise control for occasional open-road use and suspension adjustment. The 0.9 PS output advantage is consistent with that performance-oriented image, but the manufacturer’s positioning remains a description of intent rather than independent proof of faster lap times or better traffic manners.

During a city test ride, look for the things the specification sheet cannot answer: clutch modulation at walking pace, steering effort during U-turns, heat around your legs, mirror visibility, switchgear reach, display readability in sunlight and how easily you can select the mode or ABS setting you want.

Ownership questions the available specifications do not settle

Neither the cited product pages nor the 2026 announcements provide a neutral, comparable dataset for fuel economy, service cost, service intervals, parts pricing, dealer coverage, resale value, reliability, insurance premiums, kerb weight, seat height or pillion comfort. It would be misleading to declare one motorcycle cheaper to own or more dependable on this evidence alone.

Factor Evidence status How to investigate before buying
Fuel economy Not established comparatively Ask owners using a similar route and record several full-tank calculations; do not treat a single dashboard reading as a guarantee.
Routine service cost Not established comparatively Request the scheduled-service price list, consumables list and labour charges from your local authorised workshop.

Test-ride checklist that answers the unresolved questions

Use the same route, rider and equipment for both motorcycles. A short dealership loop can reveal control reach and balance, but it cannot answer every touring question.

  1. Verify identity first. Photograph the VIN or model information and confirm displacement, model year and whether the motorcycle is the base 350cc Duke or the 399cc Duke R.
  2. Set the controls. Adjust the levers and mirrors, note your riding position and check whether your feet, knees and wrists feel natural at a standstill.
  3. Ride slowly. Perform starts, stops and U-turns to compare clutch take-up, steering effort, low-speed balance and brake control.
  4. Use the normal city section. Observe throttle response, gear changes, visibility, heat and how easily you can operate the switches without looking down.
  5. Try the assistance features safely. With dealer guidance and legal road conditions, cycle through the available ride modes and test the quickshifter or cruise-control controls. Never disable safety systems on public roads to imitate a review.
  6. Include an open-road segment. If legal and safe, assess wind exposure, engine vibration, braking confidence and seating pressure at the speeds you actually tour.
  7. Repeat with a passenger if relevant. Check grab points, foot-peg position, suspension response and whether luggage would interfere with either rider.
  8. Write down impressions immediately. Rate each bike for your route rather than relying on memory or a salesperson’s description.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the Dominar 400 when these priorities dominate

  • Your main use is intercity travel, weekend touring or a mixed route and you want a model explicitly presented as a sports-tourer.
  • The lower announced Delhi ex-showroom price is important, subject to confirmation of your local on-road quotation.
  • You prefer an upright riding concept and want touring equipment identified in the manufacturer’s offering.
  • You are satisfied with the listed package of four ride modes, traction control, twin-channel ABS and USD forks rather than paying for the Duke’s additional electronic features.

Choose the KTM 390 Duke when these priorities dominate

  • You spend more time on lively urban roads and want the manufacturer’s street-focused character.
  • You value the listed ride modes, traction control, cornering ABS, Supermoto ABS, quickshifter+, cruise control and adjustable suspension.
  • The modest published output advantage matters to you, while you understand that it does not prove a particular acceleration result.
  • Your written on-road quote and ownership plan justify the higher announced entry price.

Pause the decision when the evidence is still incomplete

Do not place a deposit until the dealer confirms the exact variant, price validity, warranty, accessory fitment and delivery specification. If you cannot obtain a comfortable riding position, a passenger fit or acceptable local service access on either motorcycle, a lower price or longer feature list will not solve the underlying problem.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Comparing badges instead of displacement

“400” and “390” are model names, not a reliable statement of current displacement. Compare the 349.13cc Dominar with the 349.32cc base Duke, and keep the 398.63cc Duke R in a separate column.

Calling an ex-showroom figure an on-road saving

The ₹74,054 arithmetic difference applies only to the two dated Delhi announcements. Registration, insurance, fees, accessories and finance can change the amount you actually pay, and local prices may have moved since April 2026.

Assuming every listed feature is identical across stock

Confirm the model year, software version and exact trim. Have the salesperson demonstrate the relevant KTM electronic features and show the Dominar’s ride-mode and touring-equipment specification on the motorcycle being delivered.

Using promotional language as test evidence

“Sports-tourer,” “spirited city riding” and statements about aspiration describe manufacturer intent. They are useful for understanding the brief, but they do not establish comfort, reliability, economy or outright speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line decision

For a price-led touring purchase, the current Dominar 400 is the logical first test ride: it has the lower announced Delhi ex-showroom price and a clear sports-tourer brief. For a rider who prioritises electronic aids, adjustable suspension and a city-oriented character, the current 350cc KTM 390 Duke deserves the extra scrutiny despite its higher announced price. Compare local on-road quotations, verify the variant and ride both motorcycles before deciding; the available evidence supports a conditional choice, not a single objective winner.
