There is no honest universal winner in a Bajaj Dominar 400 versus Honda CB500 comparison until you identify the Honda model and market. Honda India has announced a 501 cc air-cooled single-cylinder CB 500, while the 2026 US CB500 Hornet is a different motorcycle with a 471 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine. The Dominar 400 itself is a 349.13 cc single-cylinder sports-tourer. Compare the same country, model year and variant before treating any specification or price as decisive.
On the published specifications, the Dominar is the touring-focused, equipment-heavy option in India, while the US-market CB500 Hornet is the larger-capacity twin-cylinder roadster. That describes their design and specifications, not a measured comfort, reliability or performance verdict. Your better choice depends on intended use, local price, dealer support and which Honda is actually available.

Which Honda CB500 are you comparing?
“Honda CB500” is not one globally identical motorcycle. The name can refer to different engines and markets, so a comparison that combines their numbers can produce a false result.

Honda India’s announced CB 500
Honda India describes a 501 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder roadster. Its announcement says pricing and availability will be disclosed closer to individual launches. That means a buyer cannot yet use a confirmed Indian retail price, warranty package or delivery date from the announcement alone.

Autocar India reported 28 hp and 43.3 Nm for the announced Indian motorcycle on September 23, 2026. Those are secondary-source reported figures, not numbers stated in Honda’s announcement, and they must not be substituted for the specifications of the international CB500 Hornet.
2026 US Honda CB500 Hornet
Honda’s United States specification for the 2026 CB500 Hornet lists a 471 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, six-speed manual transmission, 414 lb curb weight, 4.5 US gallon fuel capacity and a 31.1-inch seat height. The US figures apply to that model and market; they do not establish the specifications of Honda India’s 501 cc single-cylinder CB 500.
Why model identity changes the answer
A 349.13 cc single-cylinder Dominar is not being compared with the same type of Honda in both cases. Against the Indian 501 cc single, the discussion is about two single-cylinder roadsters with different equipment and intended positioning. Against the US Hornet, the discussion is about a smaller-displacement touring-oriented single versus a larger liquid-cooled twin-cylinder roadster. Confirm the model code, country specification and model year on the dealer quotation or registration documents.

The table separates the three motorcycles instead of treating every “CB500” as one product. Bajaj and Honda figures are manufacturer specifications unless identified otherwise.
| Specification | Bajaj Dominar 400 | Honda CB500 Hornet (2026 US) | Honda CB 500 (India announcement) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine configuration | Single-cylinder | Liquid-cooled parallel twin | Air-cooled single-cylinder |

| Stated torque | 33.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm | Not stated in the retrieved excerpt | 43.3 Nm reported by Autocar India; secondary-source figure |
| Transmission | Six-speed gearbox | Six-speed manual | Not stated in Honda’s announcement |
| Claimed or published weight | 190 kg kerb | 414 lb curb (approximately 188 kg) | Not stated |
| Fuel capacity | 13 L | 4.5 US gal (approximately 17.0 L) | Not stated |

| Ride modes | Four | Not stated in the cited specification | Not stated |
| ABS and clutch information | Twin-channel ABS; exact clutch specification not stated in the cited material | ABS and slipper clutch | Not stated |
Kerb and curb weights can use different measurement conventions, so the Dominar’s 190 kg and the Hornet’s 414 lb should be treated as published reference figures rather than a laboratory comparison. The conversions in the table are arithmetic approximations, not new manufacturer claims.
How the Dominar 400 is positioned
Bajaj describes the Dominar 400 as “a versatile sports-tourer built for performance and long-distance comfort.” That is product-page positioning, not an independent test result. The current specification lists a 349.13 cc single-cylinder engine producing 40.6 PS at 9,000 rpm and 33.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm, a six-speed gearbox, 190 kg kerb weight and a 13-litre tank.

Its equipment list is oriented toward varied riding rather than a minimal naked-roadster specification. Bajaj highlights four ride modes, ride-by-wire, touring accessories and a GPS carrier. A GPS carrier can be useful if you navigate on long trips, but it does not confirm that a particular phone or navigation unit will fit. Check handlebar diameter, clamp clearance, device dimensions, weather protection and wiring before buying an aftermarket mount. The carrier should not be described as approval for every accessory.
The 13-litre tank and touring equipment may suit a rider who regularly leaves the city, carries luggage or wants a motorcycle configured for route planning. They do not prove a particular cruising range, seat comfort or reliability record. Fuel economy, wind protection and comfort vary with speed, load, road and rider, and no independent comparative measurements were established for this choice.
What the CB500 versions offer on paper
Indian 501 cc single-cylinder CB 500
The Indian announcement points to a straightforward air-cooled single-cylinder roadster. That configuration may appeal to someone who wants the character and mechanical simplicity of a large single, but the announcement does not establish its final equipment, weight, seat height, service intervals, warranty or standard luggage provisions. Wait for the launch specification and an itemized dealer quotation before comparing ownership costs with the Dominar.
The 28 hp and 43.3 Nm figures reported by Autocar India should remain labeled as reported figures. They are not interchangeable with the Dominar’s 40.6 PS figure because horsepower and PS use different units, and because the two numbers come from different source types. A proper comparison needs final Honda specifications measured and stated in the same units.
2026 US CB500 Hornet
The US Hornet is specified as a 471 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin with a six-speed manual transmission. Its 414 lb curb weight converts to approximately 188 kg, close to the Dominar’s published 190 kg kerb figure, although the definitions may differ. The Hornet’s 4.5 US gallon tank is approximately 17 litres, larger in stated capacity than the Dominar’s 13 litres. Honda also lists a 31.1-inch seat height, ABS and a slipper clutch for this US model.

Engine and riding character: what the numbers can and cannot tell you
Displacement alone does not determine which motorcycle feels better. The Dominar’s stated output is available at specified engine speeds, but no independent acceleration, top-speed, fuel-economy or dyno test is established here. The Hornet’s larger twin-cylinder layout suggests a different engine design and operating character, yet the available specification excerpt does not support a quantified performance advantage.
For a buyer, the useful questions are practical:
- Do you prefer the pulse and response of a single-cylinder engine or the smoothness associated with a parallel twin?
- Will most rides be low-speed commuting, open highways, two-up touring or occasional weekend trips?
- Do you need the Dominar’s listed ride modes and touring-oriented accessory support, or is a simpler roadster specification sufficient?
- Can you test the exact motorcycle at your local dealer, including clutch weight, throttle response, vibration, reach to the bars and heat in traffic?
Do not infer real-world comfort or reliability from the phrase “long-distance comfort.” It describes Bajaj’s design intent. Likewise, the Hornet’s twin-cylinder engine and slipper clutch describe its hardware, not a guaranteed advantage for every rider or road.
Weight, seat height and fuel capacity
The published weights are close numerically: 190 kg kerb for the Dominar and 414 lb curb, approximately 188 kg, for the US Hornet. Because kerb and curb definitions can include different fuel or equipment assumptions, weigh them only as an initial guide. A test ride or showroom maneuver is more useful for judging whether you can reverse, park and catch a leaning motorcycle.

Honda gives the US Hornet a 31.1-inch seat height, approximately 79 cm. The cited Dominar specification does not state a seat height, and Honda’s Indian announcement does not state one either. Do not estimate reach from engine size or styling. Sit on the exact variant wearing the footwear and riding gear you normally use, then check both feet, the side-stand lean and the distance to the controls.
The Hornet’s stated 4.5 US gallon tank is approximately 17 litres, compared with the Dominar’s 13 litres. Tank capacity is not range: range depends on consumption, traffic, speed, payload and reserve policy. Treat the figures as refueling-interval clues, not promises of a particular distance.
Equipment and safety comparison
| Area | Dominar 400 | 2026 US CB500 Hornet | How to verify locally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ride modes | Four modes listed by Bajaj | Not stated in the cited US excerpt | Ask the dealer to demonstrate mode selection and explain what each mode changes |
| Throttle | Ride-by-wire listed by Bajaj | Not stated in the cited excerpt | Check the exact market specification |
| ABS | Twin-channel ABS listed | ABS listed | Confirm whether the local variant has the same system and warning-light behavior |
| Clutch | Not stated in the cited material | Slipper clutch listed | Confirm standard versus optional equipment |
| Touring provisions | Touring accessories and GPS carrier highlighted by Bajaj | Not stated in the cited excerpt | Get accessory prices, mounting instructions and load limits in writing |
Standard equipment can change by country, trim and model year. A dealer’s brochure, vehicle identification number and written quotation are stronger evidence than a generic web listing. Ask specifically whether panniers, a top box, engine protection, navigation hardware and charging sockets are included or extra.

Price: why a direct number is unsafe
Bajaj’s official figures conflict. Its live Dominar page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists ₹208,270 ex-showroom Delhi. A Bajaj launch release dated July 4, 2025 lists ₹238,682 ex-showroom Delhi. The material available does not explain the difference, so neither figure should be presented as an unquestionable current national price.
Before signing, request a dated, itemized quotation from a local authorized dealer showing ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes, accessories, extended warranty and any handling or logistics charges. Confirm whether the quoted Dominar is the current model year and whether a promotional adjustment has been applied.
The 2026 US Hornet’s US-market price is not a valid substitute for an Indian ex-showroom price. Exchange rates, freight, taxes, registration, equipment and warranty terms make cross-country comparisons misleading. Honda India’s announcement also says CB 500 pricing and availability will be announced closer to individual launches, so an Indian buyer should wait for the local announcement and dealer quote.
Ownership questions that remain open
The available material does not establish comparative reliability, fuel economy, acceleration, service cost, parts availability, inventory, warranty coverage or total cost of ownership. These are not minor details: they can outweigh a displacement or equipment difference over several years.
Use this checklist with both dealers:
- Written warranty duration, mileage limit, exclusions and roadside-assistance terms.
- Scheduled service intervals and the labor and consumables included at each visit.
- Prices and lead times for brake pads, clutch parts, filters, levers, body panels and electronic components.
- Whether the nearest workshop is trained and equipped for the exact model and market variant.
- Parts availability for touring accessories and whether fitting affects warranty coverage.
- Current insurance premium and registration cost in your state or country.
- Expected delivery date, manufacturing month and cancellation or deposit terms.
Ask for invoices or published schedules rather than accepting an informal estimate. No owner-survey percentage or independent comparative reliability statistic is established for these motorcycles in the available evidence.

Choose the Dominar 400 when touring equipment and Indian availability lead
The Dominar is the more defensible choice when you are buying in its supported market, want a motorcycle explicitly positioned for long-distance use, value four ride modes and ride-by-wire, and can verify a nearby service network. Its 13-litre tank, GPS carrier and touring-accessory emphasis may reduce the amount of customization needed for trips. Confirm that the riding position, wind protection and luggage capacity work for you rather than assuming the marketing description guarantees comfort.

Choose the Indian CB 500 only after its final launch specification is confirmed
The announced 501 cc air-cooled single may suit a rider who specifically wants that engine format and a Honda roadster. At present, the launch announcement does not settle price, availability, equipment, weight, seat height or ownership costs. Reserve a judgment until Honda publishes the final specification and your dealer can provide a firm quotation and delivery date.
Choose the US CB500 Hornet when the twin-cylinder roadster specification fits
The 2026 US Hornet is the relevant option for a buyer in the United States who wants a 471 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, six-speed manual, ABS, slipper clutch and a 31.1-inch seat. Its approximately 188 kg published curb weight and approximately 17-litre tank provide useful reference points. Do not transfer these specifications to another country without checking the local Honda listing.
For mostly urban commuting
Compare low-speed balance, clutch effort, engine heat, steering lock, seat reach and fuel stops at a test ride. The largest engine or tank is not automatically the easiest commuter. A dealer’s ability to service the motorcycle near your home may matter more than a paper advantage.
For highway and two-up touring
Check the actual passenger seat, grab rails, luggage mounting points, payload limit, wind protection and accessory prices. Ask to sit on the motorcycle with the intended luggage or passenger weight. Neither the Dominar’s sports-tourer label nor the Hornet’s twin-cylinder layout proves loaded comfort without an evaluation of the exact setup.
A fair buying process
- Write down the exact Honda identity. Record country, model year, full model name and engine configuration. “CB500” by itself is insufficient.
- Obtain matching quotations. Request out-the-door totals from dealers in the same market, including registration, insurance, accessories and warranty items.
- Verify the specification sheet. Check displacement, stated output, weight definition, seat height, tank capacity, ABS, clutch and ride modes for the exact variant.
- Test the ergonomics. Perform a slow U-turn, push the motorcycle backward, reach the ground with both feet and operate the clutch and brakes in normal riding gear.
- Price the first year of ownership. Include scheduled service, consumables, insurance, protection parts, luggage and navigation hardware.
- Check support before paying a deposit. Confirm workshop location, parts lead times, warranty terms and delivery date in writing.
- Recheck the final documents. Match the vehicle identification number and variant on the invoice, insurance policy and registration paperwork.
Common comparison mistakes
- Mixing the 501 cc Indian single with the 471 cc US twin: keep separate tables and labels for each market.
- Calling the Dominar a 400 cc motorcycle: its current listed displacement is 349.13 cc; “400” is the model name.
- Treating official price figures as consistent: the two Bajaj Delhi ex-showroom figures conflict and require dealer confirmation.
- Comparing kerb and curb weights as identical: definitions may differ, so use them as approximate reference values.
- Turning marketing into test evidence: “long-distance comfort” is Bajaj’s product language, not an independent comfort measurement.
- Filling missing Honda output figures from memory: the cited US excerpt does not state power or torque, and Indian announcement figures are a separate model and source.
- Assuming accessories are included: verify whether the GPS carrier, luggage, protection and charging equipment are standard or paid options.
Bottom line
If you are shopping in India today and the dealer can support it, the Dominar 400 is the easier specification-based recommendation for a touring-oriented buyer: Bajaj lists four ride modes, ride-by-wire, twin-channel ABS, a 13-litre tank and touring accessories, alongside 40.6 PS and 190 kg kerb weight. Its current price still needs confirmation because Bajaj’s live page and 2025 launch release disagree.
If you mean Honda’s 2026 US CB500 Hornet, you are considering a different 471 cc liquid-cooled twin with a 31.1-inch seat, 4.5 US gallon tank, ABS and slipper clutch. If you mean Honda India’s announced 501 cc single, wait for final pricing and equipment. The better motorcycle is therefore the one that matches your actual Honda variant, riding purpose and local ownership support—not a single winner claimed across incompatible markets.
