There is no universal winner. The Bajaj Dominar 250 is the larger, more powerful motorcycle on published specifications, with a bigger fuel tank and a broader set of listed ride aids. The KTM 160 Duke is a smaller-displacement naked bike with a taller listed seat and greater listed ground clearance. Choose between them by matching those differences to your roads, passenger or luggage plans, physical fit, and the current on-road quote—not by treating a specification sheet as proof of acceleration, mileage, comfort, or reliability.
The figures below are for the India market. Bajaj’s displayed price is from its current product page, while KTM’s price is specifically the Delhi launch price announced on 11 August 2025. Ask a dealer for same-day, same-city on-road quotations before paying a booking amount.

What “better” means in this comparison
“Better” can describe very different priorities. A commuter who values easy parking and a lower purchase commitment may prefer a lighter-feeling, smaller-capacity motorcycle, while a rider covering highways with luggage may value torque, tank capacity and a relaxed cruising reserve. Neither manufacturer’s figures answer how each bike feels in traffic, how much fuel it uses in your route, or whether the seat suits your body.
Use a three-part test before deciding:
- Mission: Identify your normal split of city traffic, open roads, two-up riding, rough surfaces and weekend touring.
- Fit: Sit on both motorcycles in riding footwear, reach the controls, move the bike backwards and perform a slow U-turn.
- Quote: Compare written, same-date on-road prices that include registration, insurance, taxes, handling charges and accessories you actually want.
If one motorcycle wins only because of a headline number but fails one of those three checks, it is not the better purchase for you.
Engine output and intended use
Why the Dominar’s larger numbers matter on paper
The Dominar’s 248.77 cc engine is listed with 27 PS and 23.5 Nm. The KTM’s 164.2 cc engine is listed with 19 PS and 15.5 Nm. That is a substantial published advantage for the Bajaj in both peak measures. The Dominar’s torque peak is listed at a lower engine speed, 6,500 rpm, while the Duke’s is listed at 7,500 rpm.
Recommended Free Tools
Those figures describe the maximum values under the manufacturers’ test conditions; they do not predict a specific 0–100 km/h time, overtaking distance, vibration level or fuel economy. Final-drive gearing, throttle calibration, rider mass, wind, gradient and traffic all affect what you experience. Treat the output gap as a reason to arrange a proper ride, not as a guarantee that one bike will feel faster in every situation.
Six gears, different engine characters
Both motorcycles use six-speed gearboxes, so the basic number of ratios does not distinguish them. Ask the salesperson to let you experience first-gear response, the shift effort through the middle gears and the engine speed at the road speeds you normally use. A motorcycle that requires frequent downshifts on your route may be less satisfying than the specification table suggests, while a rider who enjoys working through the gears may prefer that character.

- 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
Match output to your roads
- Frequent highway travel: The Dominar’s higher published power and torque provide more numerical headroom for sustained high-speed work, but verify wind protection, vibration and your preferred cruising speed during the ride.
- Dense urban use: Test clutch weight, throttle smoothness, steering effort and heat management in stop-start conditions. Displacement alone does not establish which bike is easier in traffic.
- Occasional touring: Check how your luggage mounts, whether a passenger can sit comfortably and how the motorcycle balances at walking pace before assuming the larger engine is automatically the right touring choice.
Seat height, ground clearance and maneuverability
Bajaj lists an 800 mm seat for the Dominar and KTM lists 815 mm for the 160 Duke. A 15 mm difference can matter to a shorter rider, but published seat height is not a complete fit measurement: seat width, suspension sag, riding boots and your inseam change the reach to the ground. Sit on each bike with both feet on the pegs, then place one foot down while holding the motorcycle upright.
The Duke’s listed ground clearance is 174 mm, compared with 157 mm for the Dominar. More clearance can be useful over steep ramps, broken surfaces and tall speed breakers, yet approach angle, wheel size, suspension setup and your actual load also matter. Cross a familiar speed breaker slowly on the test ride rather than assuming a number guarantees clearance.
Bajaj lists the Dominar at 180 kg kerb weight. The cited KTM launch release does not provide a directly comparable kerb-weight figure, so do not invent a weight advantage for the Duke. Push both motorcycles off the stand, perform a tight U-turn and reverse them into a parking space. Those simple actions reveal balance and leverage more reliably than a brochure.
Fuel capacity and touring practicality
The Dominar’s listed 13-litre tank is larger than the Duke’s 10.1-litre tank. Capacity tells you how much fuel can be carried, not how many kilometres you will travel. Actual range depends on speed, traffic, payload, tyre pressure, wind, fuel quality and riding style; the supplied material contains no like-for-like mileage test.
For a touring decision, map your real fuel stops. If your regular route has long gaps between pumps, the larger tank may reduce the number of stops, but a full tank also adds mass. If most of your riding is a short urban commute, tank size may have little practical value. During the test ride, check the fuel gauge visibility, reserve warning behaviour and whether the filler arrangement works with the luggage or tank bag you intend to use.

Electronics, ride modes and model-year changes
What Bajaj lists for the updated Dominar
Bajaj’s 2025 update announcement describes ride-by-wire, ride modes and touring accessories. The current specification material lists Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road modes, along with traction control. Confirm the mode switch, displayed information and intervention behaviour on the exact motorcycle at the dealership; do not assume an accessory shown in launch material is standard or bundled with every unit.

Ask the dealer to demonstrate how to select each mode, whether selection is possible while moving, and what remains active after the ignition is switched off.
What the KTM material establishes
The KTM launch release and specification page establish the Duke’s engine, dimensions and price reference, but the reviewed material does not support a complete, item-by-item electronics verdict against the Dominar. Avoid assuming that a feature is absent simply because it was not detailed in the release. Read the current owner’s manual or obtain a written equipment list for the specific variant.
Price, taxes and the ownership budget
The two published Delhi ex-showroom references are close, but they are not from the same date. Bajaj’s figure is the amount displayed on its current product page when checked; KTM’s figure is explicitly an August 2025 launch price, not a verified October 2026 price. Registration fees, insurance, road tax, dealer charges, accessories and financing can change the final amount substantially.
- Request an itemised on-road quotation for each motorcycle from dealers in the same city on the same day.
- Ask which insurance cover, add-ons, accessories, extended warranty and service package are included or optional.
- Check the manufacturing month and the written validity period of the quote.
- Compare the first three scheduled-service estimates, consumables, labour rates and roadside-assistance terms in writing.
- Recalculate the monthly payment using the complete on-road amount, not the ex-showroom headline.
No comparable current service-cost schedule or independent long-term reliability evidence is established in the supplied material. Therefore, claims that either bike is definitively cheaper to maintain, more reliable or more economical would go beyond the evidence. Obtain local estimates from authorised workshops and ask existing owners about parts lead times in your area.

How to conduct a useful test ride
Arrange enough time to ride both motorcycles on the same day and, if possible, on the same roads. Use this sequence so the comparison measures your needs rather than a salesperson’s suggested route:
- Static fit: Set the levers and mirrors, check reach to the ground, turn the bars fully and note any contact with your knees or luggage.
- Low-speed control: Ride at walking pace, feather the clutch, make a U-turn and stop on an incline. Record effort and confidence rather than relying on memory.
- Urban section: Use the gears you normally select in traffic. Observe throttle smoothness, heat, brake feel, steering effort and mirror visibility.
- Open-road section: At legal speeds, assess stability, wind effect, engine refinement and how often you need to change gear. Do not treat a short burst as a performance test.
- Surface check: Cross a known speed breaker and a rough patch slowly, checking clearance, suspension response and whether your preferred riding position remains comfortable.
- Passenger and luggage check: If you regularly carry someone or use panniers, repeat the static and low-speed checks with the intended load or confirm the mounting system before purchase.
- Post-ride notes: Immediately write down fit, control, comfort, visibility and confidence scores for each bike. This prevents the more dramatic ride from overshadowing the one that suits your routine.
Which rider should choose which?
| Your priority | More logical starting point | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Higher published engine output and torque | Dominar 250 | Whether its size, weight and riding position feel manageable in your traffic |
| Larger fuel reserve for routes with sparse fuel stations | Dominar 250 | Your measured consumption and the effect of a full tank on handling |
| Lower listed seat height | Dominar 250 | Actual reach, seat width and suspension sag with your riding gear |
| More listed ground clearance | KTM 160 Duke | Clearance on your speed breakers and comfort on broken roads |
| Compact-displacement naked-bike character | KTM 160 Duke | Clutch, throttle, gearing and comfort on your regular route |
| Selectable ride modes and traction control listed by the manufacturer | Dominar 250 | Exact variant equipment and how each mode behaves |
| Lowest total ownership cost | Not established from the available evidence | Current insurance, service, consumables and parts quotations in your city |
This is a starting framework, not a ranking. A rider who values the Duke’s proportions or controls after a test ride may reasonably choose it despite the Dominar’s larger figures. Conversely, a rider planning regular highway and luggage use may find the Dominar’s specification advantages more relevant.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Using an old launch price as a current deal
A dated launch number can be useful context but is not a present-day offer. Get a fresh written quotation and check whether the dealer has added mandatory-looking but optional accessories.
Turning tank size into a mileage claim
A bigger tank does not prove better economy or longer real-world range. Track fuel over several fills after purchase if range matters to you.

Assuming a brochure feature is standard
Launch announcements often show touring accessories or describe an update without listing every bundle. Ask for the variant code, standard-equipment sheet and accessory prices.

Choosing by peak power alone
Peak figures occur at specific engine speeds. Clutch calibration, gearing, vibration, brakes, suspension and your body position determine everyday satisfaction. Ride both motorcycles in the conditions you actually face.
Ignoring local support
Before booking, locate the authorised workshop, ask about routine service intervals and confirm expected parts availability. Local support can affect downtime even when two motorcycles look similar on paper.
Verdict: choose the motorcycle that passes your real-world checks
On published specifications, the Dominar 250 is the stronger and more touring-oriented proposition: it has the larger engine, higher listed power and torque, a larger tank, a lower listed seat and manufacturer-listed ride modes with traction control. The KTM 160 Duke remains a legitimate alternative for someone who prefers its smaller-displacement format, taller stance or riding character after a proper test ride.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
