Choose the Bajaj Dominar 250 if most of your kilometres are on paved roads, including highway touring. Choose the Kawasaki KLX230 if rough roads, trails and dual-purpose riding are the priority. Neither is a universal winner: the Dominar is a road-oriented sports tourer with more manufacturer-quoted power and a lower seat, while the KLX230 is built around light-footed off-road use. The 2025 Kawasaki figures cited here come from a global KLX230 SE page, not a confirmed India-market specification, so verify the local trim, price and equipment before paying a booking amount.
The short answer: match the bike to the surface
The Dominar 250 makes the stronger case for a rider who commutes on tarmac, carries luggage and plans regular intercity or highway trips. Its six-speed transmission, larger fuel tank, touring-oriented equipment and lower listed seat height suit sustained road use. That does not make it an off-road impossibility; it means its design priorities are different.

The KLX230 is the more logical choice when broken village roads, dirt tracks, trail riding and the ability to switch between road and off-road matter more than highway pace. Kawasaki’s global 2025 SE information highlights long wheel travel and switchable dual-purpose ABS, both relevant to loose surfaces. The India-market version, if available in your city, may differ in trim or specification.

What the 2025 label actually confirms
Bajaj issued an India release on 4 July 2025 describing updates to the Dominar range. It calls out a redesigned handlebar and carrier with a GPS mount, and says the Dominar 250 has four ABS ride modes operating through a mechanical throttle body. Bajaj’s current India product specification page is the stronger reference for the Dominar’s present listed numbers and Delhi ex-showroom price.

The Kawasaki information used for this comparison is a global 2025 KLX230 SE page. It is useful for understanding the model’s dual-purpose intent and the SE equipment described there, but it does not prove that the same trim, seat height, suspension specification or ABS switch is sold in India. Kawasaki India’s current model-year page or an authorised dealer must settle that question for your location. Model names, colours, homologation equipment and prices can change independently by market.

| ABS | Dual ABS and four ABS ride modes; Bajaj’s 2025 release describes a mechanical throttle body | Dual-purpose ABS on the global SE page, with the ability to disable it for off-road riding |
These figures are not all measured under the same market or test standard. In particular, do not treat the 19 PS KLX230 figure and the 27 PS Dominar figure as a final India-market performance ranking until Kawasaki India confirms its output and test method.
Engine performance: where the Dominar gains on the road
Bajaj’s published 248.77 cc single-cylinder specification gives the Dominar 250 27 PS at 8,500 rpm and 23.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. In practical terms, that output gives the road-oriented bike more headroom for merging, overtaking and maintaining speed with a passenger or touring luggage than the lower 19 PS figure attributed to the KLX230 by the secondary comparison listing. It is a useful directional advantage, not a substitute for a back-to-back road test.

The Dominar’s six-speed gearbox also suits changing road speeds. A closely spaced lower range can make urban riding manageable while the top gear reduces engine speed during faster cruising. Gearing, wind protection, rider weight and luggage still determine how relaxed a motorcycle feels at a given speed; displacement and peak power alone cannot guarantee touring comfort.

The KLX230’s appeal is different. A less road-biased power delivery can be easier to modulate on loose surfaces, where traction and balance matter more than maximum acceleration. The global SE page’s dual-purpose positioning suggests a motorcycle intended to leave the pavement regularly. If your route includes long highway links, carry out a sustained test ride with the intended luggage and passenger rather than assuming a trail-focused engine will feel equally calm at highway speeds.
Chassis and off-road capability
Dominar 250: stability and equipment for paved routes
The Dominar is positioned by Bajaj as a sports tourer. Its listed 180 kg kerb weight can help it feel planted on paved roads and in crosswinds, but that mass becomes a consideration when turning around on a narrow trail, lifting the bike after a fall or crossing loose, uneven ground. The motorcycle has a USD front fork, and its road equipment is aimed at carrying a rider over distance rather than minimising weight for technical terrain.
A carrier with a GPS mount is part of the 2025 Dominar update described by Bajaj. Treat the mount as a convenience feature, not proof that a particular phone, case or navigation device will fit securely. Confirm the bracket dimensions, vibration protection, charging arrangement and weather resistance before adding a device.

KLX230: travel and control on uneven surfaces
Kawasaki’s global 2025 KLX230 SE page lists 250 mm of rear wheel travel. That long-travel figure is relevant when the rear wheel crosses ruts, stones or washboard surfaces, because suspension movement can help keep the tyre in contact with the ground. It also contributes to the tall 875 mm seat listed for that global SE configuration. More travel is not automatically better for a highway commuter: it can raise the seat, alter load transfer and require careful setup for a rider’s weight.

The ability to disable ABS for off-road riding is meaningful on loose climbs and descents, where a locked rear wheel can be used deliberately to help turn the motorcycle. Use that setting only where the surface and local regulations make it appropriate, and re-enable road ABS before returning to public pavement. Whether this control is present on an India-market KLX230 must be confirmed with Kawasaki or the dealer.
Seat height, reach and day-to-day comfort
Bajaj lists the Dominar seat at 800 mm. The cited global KLX230 SE page lists 875 mm, a 75 mm difference that can materially change confidence at traffic lights, on cambered roads and when stopping on uneven ground. A number on a specification sheet is only a starting point: a broad seat can spread the rider’s legs, suspension sag lowers the bike under load, and boots change effective reach.
Shorter riders should not decide from height alone. Sit on each exact local trim with the normal riding trousers and boots you will use. Check whether you can place one foot securely, move the motorcycle backward under your own strength and reach the controls without stretching. A lower seat or suspension change can affect ground clearance, steering geometry and warranty, so discuss approved options rather than cutting foam or altering links casually.

Safety and equipment differences
The Dominar specification lists dual-channel ABS, four ride modes, a USD front fork, an assist-and-slipper clutch and a bonded digital speedometer with a turn-by-turn indicator. Bajaj’s July 2025 release specifically describes four ABS ride modes on a mechanical throttle body. Read the owner’s manual for the intervention logic of each mode; a mode label does not tell you the exact wheel-slip threshold or whether engine response changes.
The assist-and-slipper clutch can reduce lever effort and help manage rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts. It does not replace smooth rev-matching, correct tyre pressure or sensible corner entry. The digital turn-by-turn indicator can reduce the need to look at a phone, but navigation accuracy and phone connectivity depend on the actual accessory and software combination.
The KLX230 equipment that is confirmed in the global SE description includes dual-purpose ABS that the rider can disable off-road. Because this is a global page, do not assume the Indian motorcycle has the same display, lighting, hand guards, suspension adjustability or switchgear. Ask the dealer to show the homologated motorcycle and list every included item on the quotation.
Price and fuel-cost reality
Bajaj’s current product page lists the Dominar 250 at ₹1,86,835 ex-showroom Delhi. A BikeDekho comparison listing shows ₹1,84,000 for the KLX230. These are not equivalent nationwide on-road prices: the Kawasaki number is a secondary figure and its local availability and trim must be checked. Registration, insurance, taxes, logistics, accessories and dealer charges can move the final amount substantially.

The mileage numbers above were reported by BikeDekho and accessed on 13 October 2026. The listing does not disclose a named independent test or a reproducible methodology, so use the figures to model possibilities rather than promise a fuel bill. Traffic, tyre pressure, load, speed, terrain and maintenance can move consumption in either direction. A trail-focused motorcycle may use less fuel in a light commuting role, while repeated low-speed technical riding can produce the opposite result.
For a realistic budget, obtain two written quotes in your city for the same insurance coverage and accessories. Include a helmet and protective clothing, luggage, engine protection, navigation hardware, scheduled service, tyres and damage protection for off-road use. Do not infer service cost or reliability from the engine figures alone; those require local dealer rates and ownership data for the exact model.
Which bike fits common riding plans?
Choose the Dominar 250 for road touring
- Your weekly riding is predominantly paved and includes expressways or national highways.
- You want the lower listed seat and a 13-litre tank for fewer fuel stops.
- You regularly carry a passenger or luggage and value the manufacturer-quoted power reserve.
- You want integrated touring-oriented equipment such as the digital turn-by-turn indicator and the updated carrier with GPS-mount provision.
- You prefer a conventional road motorcycle and do not expect to spend most weekends on trails.
Its 180 kg mass is a trade-off, not a defect. It can contribute to road stability but demands more care on steep, loose or narrow tracks. Select tyres and luggage within the manufacturer’s limits, and avoid treating a road-biased setup as a substitute for a dedicated off-road chassis.
Choose the KLX230 when trails are the priority
- Your routes regularly include dirt, gravel, ruts, stones or unpaved village roads.
- You value long suspension travel and the option to manage ABS for loose surfaces.
- You are comfortable with a tall motorcycle or can confidently manage the locally supplied seat height.
- You accept that highway performance, passenger comfort and wind protection may not match a sports-tourer’s priorities.
- You want one motorcycle for mixed surfaces and will verify that the India-market trim actually includes the global features you need.
Do not buy the KLX230 solely because it appears cheaper or more economical in a comparison listing. Confirm its legal sale, parts support, warranty terms, equipment and registration status in your state. A motorcycle that cannot be serviced conveniently or registered for your intended use is poor value regardless of its catalogue specification.
When neither is an obvious answer
If your riding is split evenly between long highway trips and technical trails, list which compromises you can tolerate. The Dominar asks you to accept weight and limited trail suitability; the KLX230 asks you to accept height and potentially less relaxed road touring. Consider how often the difficult use actually occurs, because the motorcycle that serves 90 percent of your trips well is usually more satisfying than one that is excellent for an occasional weekend but awkward every weekday.
How to verify the exact motorcycle before booking
- Confirm the model and trim. Ask whether the motorcycle is the 2025 model, a later update or a different regional specification. Record the VIN or written model code on the quotation.
- Get a local price sheet. Separate ex-showroom, registration, insurance, handling, accessories and any optional protection. The Dominar reference price is Delhi-specific; the KLX230 comparison price needs dealer confirmation.
- Check the physical specifications. Measure or verify seat height, kerb weight, fuel capacity, wheel travel, ground clearance and tyre sizes for the bike you will receive, not a global web page.
- Test the reach. Wear your riding boots, operate the clutch and brake, reverse the bike, stand on the pegs if considering the KLX230, and check whether luggage changes your balance.
- Ride both surfaces you actually use. Include stop-and-go traffic, a faster paved section and, only where legal and safe, the type of broken road or trail you expect to ride.
- Inspect the electronics and ABS controls. Have the salesperson demonstrate the Dominar’s four ABS ride modes and the KLX230’s ABS operation on the exact local trim. Learn how to restore road ABS before leaving loose terrain.
- Ask for support details. Obtain the nearest authorised service location, service intervals, parts lead times, warranty exclusions, roadside assistance terms and the price of common consumables.
- Check the delivered accessories. Confirm whether a GPS mount, carrier, hand guards, engine protection, luggage racks and charging hardware are standard, optional or unavailable. Verify payload limits before fitting luggage.
- Review registration and insurance. Ensure the model is approved for your state and that the policy covers the accessories and off-road use you intend, subject to the insurer’s wording.
Common mistakes in this comparison
- Treating global Kawasaki data as India data: the 875 mm seat, 250 mm rear travel and switchable dual-purpose ABS cited here come from a global 2025 KLX230 SE page.
- Comparing peak power without context: the Dominar’s 27 PS is an official Bajaj India figure, while 19 PS for the KLX230 comes from a secondary listing whose India specification was not verified.
- Using ex-showroom prices as final budgets: city taxes, insurance, registration and accessories are excluded.
- Assuming mileage is guaranteed: the 35.03 kmpl and 40 kmpl figures are secondary estimates, not certified tests.
- Choosing by seat height alone: seat width, sag, inseam, footwear and loaded balance determine real-world confidence.
- Inferring comfort or reliability from a brochure: only a sustained test ride and local ownership support can answer those questions for your body, roads and dealer network.
Final buying decision
Buy the Dominar 250 when paved-road distance, luggage, passenger use and easier seat reach dominate your brief. Its official India figures and equipment list support that road-touring role. Buy the KLX230 when rough surfaces and trail control are the central reason for the purchase, but treat the global SE specifications as a starting point until Kawasaki India or an authorised dealer confirms the exact motorcycle.
Sarang Kanade, President of Bajaj Auto’s Motorcycle Business Unit, described the Dominar as more than a machine and “a gateway to real-world experiences.” That idea applies to this comparison only when the machine matches the experience you actually plan: the Dominar for the paved journey, the KLX230 for the mixed-surface route. Verify the live quote, local specification and support network before signing.
