No. AUTOSAR Adaptive is an architecture and requirements framework whose stated goal is to support systems up to ASIL D; it is not a blanket ASIL-D certificate for your application, ECU, or vehicle. An ISO 26262 program must certify or assess a specifically defined item, implementation, hardware and software configuration, development lifecycle, and body of evidence.
Is AUTOSAR Adaptive ASIL D certified?
AUTOSAR’s official safety overview says: “The goal of the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform architecture is to enable and support systems up to ASIL D.” That is an architectural objective, not a certificate issued to every Adaptive Platform implementation.

AUTOSAR explains that it cannot assign an ASIL rating to each architectural element because safety depends on the underlying hardware, the product’s safety goals, its safety metrics, and the development processes used. AUTOSAR also states that whether the Adaptive Platform architecture itself can be treated as an ISO 26262 Part 10 safety element out of context (SEooC) remains unresolved and has not been verified.
The certification boundary therefore has to be stated precisely. It may cover a platform component, a software library, an operating-system or hypervisor configuration, an ECU, or a complete item. A claim about one boundary cannot be extended automatically to another.

What AUTOSAR Adaptive contributes to a safety program
The Adaptive Platform implements the AUTOSAR Runtime for Adaptive Applications (ARA), exposes services and APIs, and groups functionality into services and the Adaptive Platform Basis. AUTOSAR lists capabilities for runtime execution, communication, storage, security, safety, configuration, diagnostics, cryptography, POSIX operating systems, and virtual machines.
AUTOSAR positions Adaptive for high-performance-computing ECUs and fail-operational use cases such as autonomous driving. Those use cases can require continued operation after a fault, but the platform’s capabilities do not by themselves establish that a particular vehicle function meets its allocated ASIL.
Safety-related mechanisms
- Deterministic execution: AUTOSAR’s safety requirements describe determinism as an enabler for higher ASIL levels and recommend restricting interrupt use where necessary to control execution variability.
- End-to-end communication protection: Fault detection can use counters, checksums, timestamps, and related mechanisms. The integrator must select, configure, and justify the mechanisms in the item’s safety concept.
- Platform-health monitoring: AUTOSAR’s cross-standard safety work covers platform-health monitoring and safety architecture requirements for both Adaptive and Classic Platforms.
These are inputs to a safety argument. They do not replace timing measurements, fault-injection results, implementation verification, freedom-from-interference analysis, or an independent assessment.
What “ASIL D ready” should mean in your program
Use “ready” to describe a defined implementation and evidence plan, not a product-wide status. The following boundaries should be recorded before procurement or integration:
Rank #2
| Boundary | Question the program must answer | Typical owner |
|---|---|---|
| Item | What vehicle function, ECU, interfaces, operating modes, and fault reactions are in scope? | Vehicle or system safety team |
| Platform implementation | Which Adaptive release, vendor build, libraries, middleware, POSIX OS, hypervisor, and configuration are used? | Platform supplier and integrator |
| Hardware | Which processor, safety mechanisms, memory protection, watchdogs, networks, and diagnostic features support the safety goals? | Hardware and system teams |
| Application | Which adaptive applications implement the technical safety requirements, and what assumptions do they make about the platform? | Application developer |
| Assessment | Which work products and configuration will an independent assessor or certification body review? | Safety manager and assessor |
If any row is undefined, an ASIL-D claim is incomplete even when a supplier advertises an ASIL-rated component.
Evidence needed for ASIL D on Adaptive AUTOSAR
Build the case around the applicable ISO 26262 lifecycle. ISO identifies Part 9 as covering ASIL-oriented and safety-oriented analyses; the exact work-product mapping must be tailored to the item, contract, and assessment scope.
1. Item definition and hazard analysis
- Describe the item, its interfaces, operating situations, dependencies, and reasonably foreseeable misuse.
- Perform hazard analysis and risk assessment, including controllability and exposure assumptions used for ASIL allocation.
- Record external elements and platform assumptions that can affect the safety argument.
2. Safety goals and allocated requirements
- Derive safety goals from the hazards and assign ASILs with documented rationale.
- Flow goals into functional safety requirements, then technical safety requirements and software safety requirements.
- Define safe states, degraded or fail-operational behavior, fault-tolerant time intervals, and diagnostic reactions where applicable.
3. Functional and technical safety concepts
Specify how the system detects faults, limits their effects, communicates safely, and recovers or transitions to the required state. Allocate responsibilities among the application, Adaptive Platform services, OS, hypervisor, hardware, network, and other ECUs. State assumptions of use for every reused platform element.

5. Software architecture and detailed requirements
- Trace each software safety requirement to architectural elements, interfaces, and code.
- Define scheduling, startup and shutdown behavior, inter-process communication, data integrity, error handling, and update constraints.
- Show how deterministic execution and end-to-end communication mechanisms are configured for the actual network and timing budget.
6. Implementation and verification
Maintain bidirectional traceability from requirements through design, implementation, reviews, static analysis, unit tests, integration tests, and system tests. Include boundary conditions, abnormal sequencing, resource exhaustion, communication corruption, reset behavior, and timing analysis. Fault injection should demonstrate that the specified diagnostics and reactions occur within the required time.
7. Integration and validation
Validate the integrated item in representative hardware, operating modes, and environmental conditions. Confirm that safety goals are met at the item level rather than inferring them from a platform test report.
8. Configuration, change, and regression control
Baseline source, binaries, generated artifacts, tools, calibration, platform configuration, safety manuals, and third-party components. Classify changes for safety impact, repeat affected analyses and tests, and preserve reproducible builds and regression results.

9. Confirmation measures and assessment
Plan independence for reviews, audits, functional-safety assessment, and any certification activity required by the contract or jurisdiction. The assessor needs the defined scope, safety plan, traceability, verification records, anomaly history, change records, and the rationale for residual risk.

Does AUTOSAR make my software ISO 26262 compliant?
No. Using AUTOSAR can provide standardized architecture, interfaces, requirements, and safety mechanisms, but compliance is a property of the defined development and evidence set for your item. An application can still fail its safety case because of an incorrect hazard analysis, unsuitable hardware assumptions, missing timing evidence, inadequate freedom from interference, unverified configuration, or untested fault reactions.
Before calling software compliant, verify that you can produce:
- a signed item definition and hazard analysis;
- ASIL allocation and traceable safety requirements;
- the exact platform, OS, hypervisor, hardware, toolchain, and release baselines;
- supplier safety manuals, assumptions of use, diagnostic evidence, and interface contracts;
- verification, fault-injection, timing, resource, and integration results;
- configuration, change-impact, and regression records; and
- independent confirmation measures or assessment records appropriate to the claimed scope.
Which Adaptive AUTOSAR vendors have an ASIL D certificate?
No ASIL-D vendor claim is established by the available information for a complete Adaptive AUTOSAR program. Vendor claims must be checked at certificate level, not inferred from the words “AUTOSAR Adaptive” or “safety ready.”
For example, PARA’s product information claims AUTOSAR Adaptive compliance and ISO 26262 ASIL-B certification, along with Automotive SPICE Capability Level 2. That is a product-specific ASIL-B claim; it does not demonstrate ASIL-D certification for the complete platform, an ECU, or your application.
Request and compare the following before selecting an implementation:
| Comparison axis | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Certified scope | Whether the certificate covers a library, platform, OS, toolchain, ECU, or another defined boundary. |
| ASIL and issuer | The claimed ASIL, certificate or assessment issuer, issue date, validity, and limitations. |
| Exact configuration | Product name, release, target hardware, hypervisor, POSIX OS, compiler, and enabled features. |
| Safety evidence | Safety manual, assumptions of use, diagnostic coverage, known restrictions, and freedom-from-interference analysis. |
| Change strategy | Baseline policy, change-impact analysis, regression testing, and treatment of third-party components. |
| Commercial rights | Licensing or AUTOSAR partnership requirements for the intended commercial use. |
Ask the supplier to map each certificate statement to your item boundary and to identify what remains your organization’s responsibility.
Release and licensing points to verify
AUTOSAR lists Adaptive release R25-11 as current on its platform page at the time of the cited material. Release-sensitive plans should be checked against the current AUTOSAR publication before a baseline is frozen.
AUTOSAR also states that released files are provided for information and that commercial exploitation requires a license; companies interested in commercial use are directed to apply for an AUTOSAR partnership. Do not assume that access, fees, or rights are unchanged without checking the current commercial terms.
Program gate: when can you use an ASIL-D readiness claim?
Use the claim only after the scope and evidence are frozen enough for an assessor to reproduce the argument. A defensible readiness review should show:
- The item, safety goals, ASIL allocation, interfaces, and assumptions are approved.
- The exact Adaptive implementation and hardware/software configuration are baselined.
- Requirements trace through architecture and code to verification results.
- Timing, communication protection, health monitoring, fault handling, and freedom-from-interference evidence address the allocated safety requirements.
- Open anomalies, residual risks, supplier restrictions, and change procedures are documented.
- Independent reviews or assessment activities are complete to the level required by the contract.
Until those gates are met, describe the platform as supporting an ASIL-D-oriented development program rather than as ASIL-D certified.
