Global car sales grew in 2025, but the gains were uneven: electric cars reached a new scale worldwide, the EU’s battery-electric share remained below one in five, and EU commercial-vehicle registrations declined. The figures below distinguish recorded 2025 results from the IEA’s partial-year 2026 update and outlook.
What happened to the global car market in 2025?
Global car sales grew by 3.5% in 2025, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), whose 2026 Pocket Guide also puts the EU at around 14% of global car sales. That makes the EU an important regional market, but not a stand-in for the worldwide picture. ACEA’s 2026 Pocket Guide
How quickly did electric cars grow?
Electric cars sold worldwide exceeded 20 million in 2025, amounting to one-quarter of new car sales, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported in 2026. The global share masks large regional differences: electric cars accounted for approximately 55% of new car sales in China and just under 10% in the United States. These are country-level figures, not estimates for every market in either region. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026
How does the EU compare?
Battery-electric cars made up 17.4% of EU car sales in 2025, ACEA reported in its 2026 Pocket Guide. This is a regional market-share figure and should not be confused with the IEA’s global one-quarter share: the measures cover different geographies. ACEA’s 2026 Pocket Guide

What happened in commercial vehicles?
Commercial vehicles did not follow the passenger-car growth story in the EU. ACEA’s 2026 Pocket Guide reports that EU commercial-vehicle registrations fell by 8% overall in 2025, while truck registrations declined by around 6%. These are registration changes, not global sales figures. ACEA’s 2026 Pocket Guide
Electric trucks, by contrast, gained ground globally: more than 400,000 were sold in 2025, equal to 9% of truck sales, according to the IEA’s 2026 reporting. That figure covers trucks worldwide and should not be read as a share of all commercial vehicles. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026

What can be said about 2026?
The IEA’s July 2026 market update reviews data through the first half of the year and discusses uncertainty around energy conditions and policy. It is a midyear update, not a final tally for full-year 2026; forecasts and outlook statements in it should therefore be treated as expectations rather than completed results.
