Équité Association reported that Canada’s national auto-theft trends fell 17% in January–June 2024 compared with the same six months of 2023. That headline describes a first-half trend comparison—not insurance claims and not Statistics Canada’s full-year theft rate.
What the 17% decline measures
Équité Association reported the January–June year-over-year decline on July 16, 2024. Public Safety Canada cited the figure in an October 2024 update. The comparison is national and covers the first six months of each year; it should not be read as a full-year 2024 result. Équité Association’s July 2024 release
The available reporting does not provide the underlying Équité tables or a detailed breakdown of the first-half change. It supports the reported national trend, but not a claim about which provinces or vehicle types drove it.

The two 17% figures are coincidentally the same percentage. Their publishers, periods and measures differ, so they should not be treated as the same statistic. What Statistics Canada found for all of 2024
Statistics Canada reported that the full-year police-reported motor vehicle theft rate declined 17% in 2024, to 239 incidents per 100,000 population. That decline followed a 40% increase over three years from the historic low recorded in 2020. The longer view matters: a one-year drop did not erase the earlier rise.
Provincial rates were uneven
Most of the full-year rate decline came from Ontario, where the rate fell 18%, and Quebec, where it fell 27%. Even after declines, Manitoba recorded the highest provincial rate at 392 incidents per 100,000 population, followed by Saskatchewan at 386 and Alberta at 376. These are full-year 2024 rates, not regional breakdowns of Équité’s first-half trend.

Was auto theft actually down in Canada?
Yes, both the Équité first-half trend and Statistics Canada’s separate full-year rate showed declines for their respective periods and measures. Public Safety Canada later said Équité’s report showed national auto thefts fell 10% in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025. That later result adds context but does not change what the 2024 headline measured. Public Safety Canada’s 2026 update

The cited figures establish that theft trends and rates declined; they do not isolate a specific cause or quantify the effect of any individual government measure. Équité Association vice-president of investigative services Bryan Gast described the first-half figures as “early signs of progress” while cautioning against complacency. The evidence does not support treating the decline as proof that vehicle theft has been solved.
