Is the Audi A5 replacing the A4?
Audi announced on July 16, 2024, that its latest mid-size generation would carry the A5 name, thirty years after the first A4. The company presented the change as a new chapter for its mid-size range and the next step for its combustion-engine vehicles. In practical terms, the A5 now occupies the role long associated with the A4 in Audi’s announced naming transition.
Audi’s wording differs by market. Audi do Brasil explicitly described the A5 as replacing the A4 in Brazil in an announcement dated April 15, 2025. Audi Australia, meanwhile, described the new A5 designation as combining the former A4 and A5 lines. These statements support the successor relationship, but do not establish identical naming or availability in every country.
What models are in the announced A5 range?
The July 2024 announcement introduced the family in two body styles, with sportier S models also part of the range:

The Sedan and Avant offer different body styles; which is more useful depends on whether a buyer prefers a saloon-like profile or a wagon. The announcement does not justify assuming that every body style or variant is sold in every market.
What is new about the A5 generation?
A new platform for combustion models
Audi’s October 23, 2024 positioning page identifies the A5 as the first model built on its Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). Audi said the platform can support different vehicle types across segments. The company also described the A5 as part of a new generation of efficient combustion-engine vehicles.

Electrification and market-specific details
Audi identified MHEV plus technology in TDI and S models, alongside new and further-developed engines. That statement describes the technology Audi associated with those model groups; it should not be taken to mean every A5 powertrain in every market has the same setup. Audi’s detailed equipment, technical data and prices on the cited positioning page are explicitly for Germany.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said at the July 2024 announcement: “The new A5 shines with its sporty design, new interior and modern electronic architecture. It also marks the launch of our new generation of efficient combustion engines”. Audi also highlighted updated interior electronics, but exact equipment and specifications depend on the named model and market.

When did the new A5 launch?
Audi’s July 2024 announcement said orders in Germany were planned to open that month, with a German and European launch planned for November 2024. Those are historical launch plans, not confirmation of 2026 inventory, current ordering or availability outside those regions. For a purchase decision, check the current Audi site or dealer for the relevant country and exact variant.

How should A4 owners and shoppers compare the A5?
- Choose a body style: compare the Sedan and Avant against the shape and practicality you need, then confirm which is sold locally.
- Compare performance versions carefully: the range includes S models, but a model name alone does not establish its exact engine, output or equipment.
- Verify the market specification: engine choices, MHEV technology, equipment, pricing and ordering can differ by country. Audi’s cited detailed data and prices are Germany-specific.
- Interpret “replacement” geographically: Brazil’s announcement explicitly calls the A5 an A4 replacement; Australia’s publication frames the designation as combining the former A4 and A5 lines.
