These are U.S. comparison figures reported by Edmunds in 2026. Confirm the current local trim, destination charge, equipment, and quote before treating the base-price gap as the price difference between the cars you would actually buy. Although the Q5 is listed with more horsepower, the comparison describes real-world acceleration as similar; the horsepower figures alone do not settle which feels quicker.
What you get for the price
In the cited comparison, the Q5 includes all-wheel drive, a panoramic roof, leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, and phone-as-key as standard equipment. Some comparable features cost extra on the X3. Conversely, the X3 offers a hands-free highway assist oriented toward congestion that the Q5 does not offer in the comparison. Check the exact local trim and option list: standard equipment and driver-assistance availability can vary by market and configuration.
Passenger comfort and flexibility
Edmunds identifies rear-seat advantages for the Q5 and says comfort could make it the better recommendation for some buyers. If you often carry adults or child seats, sit in the back yourself and check access, knee and foot room, seat adjustment, and how easily the seats accommodate your passengers. The X3’s lower estimated fuel use or price will not compensate for a seating layout that does not work for your household.

2026 U.S. sedans: Audi A6 vs. BMW 540i
The sedan comparison has a different balance, and its results should not be projected onto the Q5 and X3. In Car and Driver’s named test configurations, the BMW 540i xDrive was quicker from 0 to 60 mph and stopped in a shorter distance from 70 mph. Yet the publication’s editorial verdict favored the A6 as the better executive car, citing its overall package, including ride comfort, ergonomics, and more intuitive interfaces.

The highway figures come from its 75-mph test, not an official fuel-economy rating. They do not establish what every A6 or 540i will achieve, or which sedan is preferable for a buyer whose priorities differ from the publication’s verdict.
How to choose for your own driving
If purchase price and efficiency lead
For the cited 2026 U.S. Q5/X3 matchup, the X3 has the lower reported base price and higher reported combined fuel-economy estimate. Compare actual quotes with equivalent equipment, then consider how much the estimated fuel difference matters for your annual mileage and local fuel prices. Do not assume the same advantage applies to other Audi and BMW pairs.

If comfort or family use leads
Give rear-seat space, entry, seat flexibility, ride comfort, and visibility a hands-on test. The Q5’s cited rear-seat and comfort strengths make it a logical SUV to try first if passengers spend substantial time in the back. For the A6 and 540i, Car and Driver’s comfort and ergonomics rationale points toward an A6 test drive if those qualities matter more to you than the BMW’s quicker instrumented result.

Compare what is standard, optional, tied to a package, or unavailable; then try the controls and interface rather than relying on a feature name. Check fuel figures against the right market and rating system
Fuel-economy figures are not interchangeable across countries or test methods. The Q5/X3 combined mpg values above are Edmunds-reported estimates in a 2026 U.S. comparison. The A6/540i mpg values are Car and Driver’s results from a 75-mph highway test. Neither should be treated as a direct substitute for an official rating for a different market or vehicle configuration.
Audi’s official A6 information for Germany illustrates how much the answer can vary by powertrain: as of October 5, 2026, its page lists a combined consumption range of 8.1–4.8 l/100 km for combustion A6 sedans and weighted combined consumption of 2.5–1.9 l/100 km for plug-in hybrids. Those are European, variant-dependent figures—not U.S. ratings and not one specification for every A6.
