The U.S. tariff on covered cars imported from the European Union is capped at 15% under the trade framework now in force, according to the European Commission. The 15% is an all-inclusive ceiling, not an extra 15% added on top of the ordinary import duty. The deal lowered the auto tariff from the previously reported 27.5%; the 30% in the headline was a broader threat, not the earlier car-specific rate.
What tariff applies to EU cars?
The European Commission says the framework took effect on 1 July 2026, after approval by the European Parliament and Council. It sets a 15% ceiling for most EU exports to the United States, including cars. The Commission describes the ceiling as all-inclusive, meaning tariffs are not stacked to produce a higher combined rate. European Commission explainer, updated 27 July 2026.
The exact formula for covered automobiles and parts depends on the product’s ordinary U.S. most-favoured-nation (MFN) tariff:
- MFN rate below 15%: the MFN tariff and Section 232 auto tariff together make a 15% combined rate.
- MFN rate of 15% or more: no additional Section 232 auto tariff applies under the formula.
These terms apply to covered EU-origin goods. They do not establish the customs treatment for every vehicle, component, or entry circumstance; the U.S. implementation rules govern a particular import. Why is the rate described as down from a 30% threat?
The figures refer to different comparisons. The 30% was a broader tariff threat; it was not the prior auto-specific rate. The Associated Press reported that the earlier rate on EU autos was 27.5%, reduced to 15% under the deal. Associated Press report.

How the deal took effect
- July 2025: U.S. and EU leaders reached the political framework.
- 21 August 2025: the parties published a joint statement describing the auto-tariff formula. It tied the reduction to the EU formally introducing the necessary legislative proposal.
- 1 July 2026: the European Commission says the framework entered into force after formal approval by the European Parliament and Council, and that the EU has implemented its main commitments.
A September 2025 U.S. executive order described how tariff changes under framework agreements would be carried out, including for the EU agreement. What remains unresolved in the wider trade framework?
The Commission says the United States is expected by the end of 2026 to bring tariffs on steel and aluminium derivatives—currently as high as 50%—into line with the 15% ceiling. It says EU concessions could be suspended if that does not happen. The Commission also describes a sunset clause running to 2029. These provisions concern the wider framework; they do not change the stated 15% auto ceiling. European Commission: EU-U.S. agreement.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič estimated that the retroactive reduction would save automakers €500–600 million per month, as reported by the Associated Press. That is an attributed estimate, not a verified account of realized savings or a measure of how much car prices will change. The available figures do not establish the effect on U.S. vehicle prices or sales.
