BMW is the current reliability leader in a U.S. brand-level comparison. Consumer Reports’ 2026 new-car reliability ranking places BMW fifth and Audi thirteenth, giving BMW the stronger signal for expected reliability across the covered lineups.
That result does not mean every BMW is more dependable than every Audi. The model, model year, engine, powertrain, mileage, warranty status and service history can change the practical answer. Use the brand ranking as a starting point, then compare the exact two vehicles you may buy.

The short answer: BMW leads the current brand ranking
For shoppers in the United States, the clearest current answer is BMW. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability-only ranking puts BMW at No. 5 and Audi at No. 13. Within that dataset, BMW has the better brand-level reliability position.
| Measure | BMW | Audi | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer Reports 2026 predicted-reliability rank | 5th | 13th | BMW has the stronger reliability signal in the current U.S. ranking. |
| Consumer Reports 2026 overall brand rank | 2nd | 16th | This is a composite of reliability, road-test performance, owner satisfaction and safety—not a pure reliability score. |
| J.D. Power 2026 brand score | Not stated in the captured release | Not stated in the captured release | The study supplies industry and powertrain context, but no directly comparable Audi-versus-BMW brand result here. |
The ranking is useful for a new-car shortlist, not a guarantee for an individual vehicle. A reliable BMW model can still be a poor choice if a particular used example has neglected maintenance, accident damage or an unresolved software fault. An Audi with a strong model-year history may suit you better than a BMW chosen only because its badge ranks higher.

What Consumer Reports is actually measuring
A large owner-reported sample
Consumer Reports’ 2025 Annual Auto Reliability Surveys collected information on about 380,000 vehicles. The survey covers model years 2000 through 2025, plus some early 2026 vehicles. Owners report problems, and those reports are used to build model histories and predicted-reliability scores.
That scale helps reveal recurring patterns across many vehicles. It is not a controlled laboratory test of every Audi and BMW, nor does it give every model the same number of observations. A brand rank is therefore a lineup-level signal derived from the models represented in the survey.
Why the overall ranking cannot answer this question
Consumer Reports also lists BMW second overall and Audi sixteenth overall. Those positions combine predicted reliability with road-test performance, owner satisfaction and safety. They can help describe a broader ownership proposition, but they should not be quoted as a reliability-only result. For the question “which brand is more reliable?”, the fifth-versus-thirteenth reliability ranking is the relevant comparison.

What J.D. Power adds—and what it does not
A three-year dependability snapshot
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study examines 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It is based on 33,268 original-owner responses collected from December 2024 through November 2025. The study covers 184 problem areas in nine categories.
Its main measure is problems per 100 vehicles, abbreviated PP100. Lower is better: a score of 180 means 180 reported problems for every 100 vehicles in the study population, not that each vehicle had exactly 1.8 problems.
The industry benchmarks
| J.D. Power 2026 group | Problems per 100 vehicles | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| All vehicles, industry average | 204 PP100 | Overall benchmark for the study. |
| Premium vehicles | 217 PP100 | Luxury vehicles averaged more reported problems than the industry total. |
| Gas-powered vehicles | 198 PP100 | Average for the gas-powered group, not a prediction for either brand. |
| Hybrids | 213 PP100 | Powertrain-group average only. |
| Battery-electric vehicles | 237 PP100 | Powertrain-group average only. |
| Plug-in hybrids | 281 PP100 | Highest of the listed powertrain averages in this study. |
The captured J.D. Power release does not provide a directly comparable Audi and BMW brand score. It therefore cannot establish a winner between these two brands. Its value here is context: vehicle segment and powertrain affect reported problem rates, and a three-year dependability study measures a different slice of ownership than Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability ranking.

J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton said many owners continue to report mobile-phone-integration problems and little or no benefit after software updates. That observation applies broadly to modern vehicles, not specifically to Audi or BMW, but it explains why a seemingly minor connectivity fault belongs on a test drive and inspection checklist.
Model evidence: the lineup matters more than the badge
BMW’s covered models were rated average or better
Consumer Reports’ 2026 summary says every BMW model in its covered lineup received an average-or-better predicted-reliability assessment. That is a favorable breadth signal: the BMW result was not attributed to one isolated standout model in the summary.
It still does not make every BMW configuration equivalent. Production changes, optional engines, drivetrain layouts, infotainment revisions and model-year updates can alter the ownership experience. Verify the exact year and powertrain before treating the brand result as decisive.
The Audi Q4 e-tron is a specific warning, not an Audi-wide verdict
The same Consumer Reports summary points to declining reliability for the Audi Q4 e-tron. Owner reports mention climate-system issues, electrical accessories, in-car electronics, and some electric-vehicle battery and charging concerns.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11This is useful if you are considering a Q4 e-tron, because those are the systems to inspect and question during a purchase. It is not evidence that every Audi model shares those problems, and it is not a complete model-by-model comparison with BMW. Treat it as a model-specific clue that deserves a vehicle-history check, a thorough inspection and confirmation that software campaigns or charging-related repairs have been completed.
Why powertrain and technology can change the answer
Brand averages conceal important differences in how a vehicle is powered and how much software it uses. J.D. Power’s 2026 group averages show lower reported problems for gas-powered vehicles than for premium vehicles overall, while hybrids, battery-electric vehicles and especially plug-in hybrids have their own averages. Those figures are not Audi or BMW scores, but they explain why comparing a gasoline sedan with a plug-in SUV only by badge can mislead you.
- Engine and transmission: Match the exact engine and transmission, not just the model name. A nameplate can span multiple mechanical combinations.
- Drive system: Front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive versions may have different components and service histories.
- Electronics: Infotainment, phone integration, driver-assistance sensors and climate controls add potential fault points. J.D. Power executive Jason Norton observed that many owners report continuing mobile-phone-integration problems and little or no benefit after software updates.
- Charging equipment: For an electric or plug-in vehicle, confirm charging behavior at the vehicle’s intended voltage and inspect the charge-port and cable condition.
The right comparison is therefore “Audi A versus BMW B, same model year and similar powertrain,” not simply “Audi versus BMW.”

How to compare two exact cars before you buy
- Define the pair. Write down the exact model, body style, model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain and fuel type for both candidates. Include whether each is new, certified used or privately sold.
- Check model-specific reliability history. Look for the predicted-reliability result and reported problem pattern for that precise generation. Do not substitute a brand rank for missing model information.
- Separate age from design. A three-year-old vehicle in the J.D. Power study is not directly comparable with a new redesign or a ten-year-old used car. Note mileage, ownership count and time in service.
- Inspect documented repairs. Request maintenance invoices, warranty claims and recall or service-campaign completion records. For a used vehicle, compare the odometer reading with the service intervals shown in the records.
- Test every system. Operate climate controls, windows, seat functions, cameras, driver-assistance features, navigation, Bluetooth or smartphone integration and all charging functions where applicable. A warning light or intermittent electronic fault deserves a written diagnosis before purchase.
- Price protection, not just purchase cost. Compare the remaining factory warranty, any certified-used coverage, deductible, roadside assistance and exclusions. Reliability risk is different when a major repair is covered than when it is paid out of pocket.
- Match the car to your holding period. A buyer keeping a vehicle for three years faces a different risk window from someone planning to own it for ten years. Put the expected ownership period and annual mileage in your comparison notes.
New versus used: the reliability question changes
For a new-car buyer
Consumer Reports’ ranking is most relevant when you are choosing among current new vehicles. Start with BMW’s higher brand position, then verify whether the BMW and Audi models you want have comparable predicted-reliability information. Check the warranty terms and ask the dealer to document outstanding software updates or campaigns before delivery.
For a used-car buyer
Condition and history can outweigh the brand average. A well-maintained Audi with complete records may be a safer purchase than a neglected BMW, while a low-mileage example can still have time-based maintenance needs. Require an independent pre-purchase inspection, scan for stored diagnostic codes and confirm that electronic and charging functions work under real conditions.
Do not use a new-car ranking as a promise about an older vehicle. The Consumer Reports survey includes many model years, but its brand result is a broad statistical signal rather than a certification for a specific used listing.
Maintenance and repair-cost claims need a precise scope
There is no single brand-level maintenance-cost figure in the available evidence that applies across every Audi and BMW, every country and every ownership period. Costs depend on the model, engine, parts, labor market, mileage, service schedule and whether work is performed under warranty.
For a meaningful ownership budget, request estimates for the exact vehicle and period you plan to keep it. Include scheduled service, tires, brakes, fluids, diagnostic time, battery or charging equipment where relevant, and a reserve for repairs outside warranty. Keep those estimates separate from reliability rankings: fewer reported problems does not automatically prove lower repair bills.

Ask both dealers or independent specialists for the same written services at the same mileage points. This avoids comparing a BMW lease-maintenance package with an Audi pay-as-you-go estimate, or comparing a new-car warranty period with an uncovered used-car period. The result is not a universal brand cost, but it is a useful budget for your specific shortlist.
Common mistakes when reading reliability rankings
- Treating rank as a pass/fail grade: Fifth and thirteenth indicate relative positions in one current survey; they do not state how many repairs a particular owner will experience.
- Using the overall brand rank: BMW’s second-place overall position includes performance, satisfaction and safety. It is not the reliability result.
- Assuming survey years are interchangeable: Consumer Reports’ survey and J.D. Power’s three-year study use different populations, dates and methods.
- Ignoring the powertrain: A gas vehicle, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicle can have different failure patterns and service needs.
- Generalizing from one model: The Q4 e-tron concerns are a reason to investigate that Audi, not proof that all Audi vehicles are unreliable.
- Skipping an inspection because of the badge: Reliability statistics cannot detect accident repairs, flood damage, poor modifications or missing maintenance on the car in front of you.
- Confusing reported problems with catastrophic failures: Survey counts can include technology, convenience or connectivity complaints as well as mechanical issues. Ask what type of problem was reported and whether it affects safety, drivability or merely convenience.
- Comparing unlike ownership stages: A new BMW with full coverage and a high-mileage Audi nearing major scheduled service are not equivalent risk propositions, even if their badges are in the same class.
Which brand should different buyers choose?
If your priority is the strongest current brand signal
Choose BMW as the starting point. Its fifth-place Consumer Reports reliability ranking is ahead of Audi’s thirteenth, and the report summary describes all covered BMW models as average or better for predicted reliability.

If you have a specific Audi model in mind
Do not reject it solely because Audi ranks lower. Compare that Audi’s model-year history, documented service and warranty with the specific BMW alternative. The brand gap is a screening tool; the matched vehicles decide the purchase.
If you are considering the Q4 e-tron
Give extra attention to climate operation, electrical accessories, in-car electronics, battery behavior and charging. Confirm that reported issues or applicable updates have been addressed and that the seller provides clear records.
If you are comparing different powertrains
First decide whether the operating pattern suits a gas, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid or battery-electric vehicle. J.D. Power’s group averages show materially different PP100 figures, but none predicts the reliability of a particular Audi or BMW. Compare like with like whenever possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much confidence should you place in the 2026 result?
Use the BMW-over-Audi result as a current U.S. guide, not a permanent ranking. Consumer Reports updates its results as new owner information arrives, and vehicle lineups change. The survey’s large sample is valuable for identifying patterns, but it cannot test every configuration under identical conditions.
J.D. Power’s evidence is complementary rather than confirmatory here. It measures original owners of 2023 vehicles after three years and reports problems across defined categories. Because the captured release does not list directly comparable Audi and BMW scores, it should not be presented as a second source declaring BMW the winner.
Geography also matters. These figures are U.S.-focused, and warranty terms, engine choices, software calibrations, dealer networks and repair labor can differ in other countries. If you are buying outside the United States, use the ranking as background and seek local model-year service information.

BMW is the reliability leader on the current Consumer Reports U.S. brand ranking: fifth versus Audi’s thirteenth. That is the most defensible answer to the headline question. The intelligent buying decision, however, is made one level lower—by matching model, year, powertrain and condition, then checking warranty and service records. A brand rank can narrow the field; it cannot replace inspection and model-specific evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is BMW more reliable than Audi in 2026?
In Consumer Reports’ 2026 U.S. new-car reliability ranking, yes: BMW is fifth and Audi is thirteenth. That is a brand-level signal, not a guarantee that every BMW model or used vehicle will outperform every Audi.
What does J.D. Power say about Audi versus BMW?
The 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study release used here does not provide directly comparable Audi and BMW brand scores. It reports an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles and gives context by vehicle type and powertrain, so it cannot independently name a winner between these brands.
Are all BMW models rated reliable?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 summary says every BMW model in its covered lineup received an average-or-better predicted-reliability assessment. Check the exact model year, engine and drivetrain because configurations and software can change.
Recommended Free Tools
Is the Audi Q4 e-tron unreliable?
Consumer Reports reports declining reliability for the Q4 e-tron, including owner-reported climate, electrical-accessory, in-car-electronics, battery and charging concerns. Those findings are specific clues for that model, not proof that every Audi is unreliable.
Which is cheaper to maintain, Audi or BMW?
There is no single figure that applies to every model, country and ownership period. Obtain estimates for the exact car, mileage and holding period, including scheduled service, tires, brakes, diagnostics, warranty coverage and likely out-of-pocket repairs.
Does a reliability ranking apply to used cars?
Only as broad background. A used car’s mileage, maintenance records, accident history, software faults and remaining warranty can outweigh the brand average. Have the exact vehicle independently inspected and scan for stored diagnostic codes.
What does PP100 mean in a dependability study?
PP100 means problems per 100 vehicles. Lower is better. A result of 180 does not mean every vehicle had exactly 1.8 problems; it is an aggregate rate from owner responses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I compare a gas Audi with a BMW plug-in hybrid?
Compare like with like whenever possible. J.D. Power’s 2026 averages were 198 PP100 for gas vehicles, 213 for hybrids, 237 for battery-electric vehicles and 281 for plug-in hybrids. These are group averages, not predictions for a particular Audi or BMW.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: BMW is the current U.S. reliability leader by Consumer Reports’ brand ranking, at fifth versus Audi’s thirteenth. Treat that as a useful first filter, then let the exact model, year, powertrain, condition, warranty and service history make the final decision.
