1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe sedan most plausibly described by this headline is the Audi S8: a full-size luxury car with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and serious performance. It can look astonishingly cheap after depreciation, but “bargain” describes the purchase price—not guaranteed ownership costs or the condition of any particular car.
Audi lists 571 PS, 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) and 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds for the S8 TFSI configuration on its current technical page. Kelley Blue Book’s dated 2013 example shows the attraction clearly: an original MSRP of $110,895 versus a Fair Purchase Price of $21,300. That valuation was displayed as valid through September 11, 2026, and is not a live quote for a specific vehicle.

What the car in this headline actually is
The Audi S8 is the performance flagship of Audi’s large luxury-sedan range. It combines limousine proportions, a high-output V8 and a discreet exterior rather than the overtly aggressive styling associated with a dedicated sports car. That combination is why used examples attract buyers who want rapid acceleration, long-distance comfort and a premium cabin in one vehicle.

Published S8 TFSI specifications
| Specification | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 4.0-liter V8 | The displacement and cylinder count identified for the S8 TFSI entry. |
| Power | 571 PS | Audi’s stated metric-power figure for that configuration. |
| Torque | 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) | Maximum torque listed by Audi for the same entry. |
| 0–100 km/h | 3.8 seconds | Audi’s published acceleration time; market and test conditions can differ. |
These numbers explain the appeal, but they do not tell you whether a used car is a good purchase. A ten-year-old luxury-performance sedan can have a very different risk profile depending on mileage, maintenance history, previous damage and whether recall work was completed.
Why the S8 can look like a bargain
Luxury cars lose value rapidly once they leave the showroom, and high-performance versions can be especially intimidating to second owners. The S8’s original price reflects its equipment and engineering; the used-market number reflects age, supply, condition and the cost buyers expect to assume after the warranty period.
| 2013 Audi S8 valuation reference | Amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original MSRP | $110,895 | Kelley Blue Book figure for a 2013 S8. |
| Fair Purchase Price | $21,300 | Kelley Blue Book display valid through September 11, 2026. |
| Difference between the two figures | $89,595 | Simple arithmetic, not a guaranteed saving on an individual car. |
The gap is roughly 81 percent of the original MSRP, which is why headlines call the car a bargain. However, the KBB figure is a benchmark, not an offer. KBB says its valuation changes with mileage, condition, location and other factors. As of October 18, 2026, the displayed validity date has passed, so use it as a dated reference point and obtain a current local valuation before negotiating.
What the number does—and does not—prove
- It demonstrates substantial depreciation from the 2013 new-car price.
- It does not establish the asking price for every 2013 S8, or for later model years.
- It does not include the condition, ownership history or equipment of a particular listing.
- It does not predict your repair bills, insurance, fuel use or future resale value.
A low price can therefore be an opportunity or a warning. A well-documented car that is priced near a dated valuation may offer unusual performance per dollar. A neglected example can consume the apparent discount quickly, even if the purchase price initially looks irresistible.
The recall every prospective buyer should check
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall 22V-178 covered certain 2013–2017 Audi S8 vehicles. The issue involved a potentially blocked oil strainer within the turbocharger oil supply. Coverage depends on the vehicle identification number, so the model year alone is not enough to determine whether a car was included.

Documented remedy
NHTSA’s remedy description states: “The oil strainer within the oil supply for the turbochargers will be replaced and an oil change will be performed.” The repair was to be completed by a dealer at no charge for covered vehicles.
The recall record identifies a defect and a remedy; it does not say that every S8 experienced a turbocharger failure or provide a failure probability. Treat it as a verification item, not as evidence that all cars are unreliable.

How to verify the vehicle
- Obtain the complete 17-character VIN from the seller, not just a stock number or registration plate.
- Check the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask an Audi dealer to confirm open and completed campaigns in its service system.
- Request the repair order showing the oil-strainer replacement and oil change if the campaign was performed.
- If the campaign remains open, have the dealer complete it before purchase or make the unresolved repair a condition of the transaction.
A seller who cannot provide the VIN, refuses a recall check or dismisses the campaign without documentation has increased your uncertainty. Walk away unless an independent inspection and the final price compensate for that risk.
How to evaluate an S8 listing step by step
1. Identify the exact car, year and market
Start with the model year, body style, engine designation, drivetrain, equipment and odometer reading. Do not compare a 2013 car with a later S8 using the same assumptions about output, features or market value. Confirm whether the advertised price is in U.S. dollars and whether the car was originally sold in your country, because taxes, specifications and service records can differ.
2. Compare the asking price with a dated local benchmark
Use the KBB 2013 figure as historical context, then obtain a current valuation for the same year, mileage band and location. Compare several genuinely similar cars rather than anchoring on the lowest advertisement. Record whether each price is a dealer asking price, a private-party request or a completed-sale figure; those are not interchangeable.

3. Demand a continuous service record
Ask for invoices, inspection reports and registration history from the earliest available date. Look for regular oil-service documentation, work performed by qualified technicians and clear explanations for gaps. A stamped booklet without invoices is weaker evidence than itemized records that identify the date, mileage and work completed.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Pay particular attention to periods when the car changed owners, sat unused or accumulated unusually little mileage. Gaps do not automatically disqualify a car, but they should reduce the price you are willing to pay until an inspection establishes its condition.
4. Verify the VIN and title history
Match the VIN on the dashboard, door-area label, title and service invoices. Confirm that the title status, accident history and import history are consistent with the seller’s description. A branded title, structural repair or unexplained mileage discrepancy changes the value calculation and should be disclosed before you arrange an inspection.
5. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection
Use a qualified Audi or European-car technician who works for you, not the seller. Ask for a written report covering the engine and turbocharger system, fluid leaks, cooling system, transmission, suspension, brakes, tires, electronic systems and evidence of collision repair. The inspection should include a scan for stored fault codes and a road test when legally and mechanically safe.
Do not skip the inspection because the seller supplies a recent “certified” check. A seller’s report may be accurate yet still omit issues that matter to your intended use, budget or negotiation position.

6. Price known work before making an offer
Separate confirmed needs from preventive recommendations and cosmetic preferences. Obtain written estimates for safety-related repairs first, then account for deferred maintenance and tires. There is no universal maintenance-cost figure for the S8, so do not rely on an internet average or assume that a low purchase price makes parts and labor inexpensive.
7. Make the deal conditional on documentation
Put the agreed price, VIN, recall status and any promised repairs in writing. If the seller will complete recall work or provide records, specify what counts as proof and when it must be delivered. A deposit should be refundable if the inspection reveals undisclosed damage or a material title problem, subject to local law.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the S8 makes sense for a used-car buyer
Reasons to consider one
- You want a full-size luxury sedan with V8 performance rather than a basic commuter car.
- You can evaluate service records and are prepared to pay for specialist inspection and maintenance.
- The individual car has a clean, consistent history and recall completion verified by VIN.
- The asking price remains attractive after adding immediate repairs, tires and other documented work.
Reasons to pass
- The seller cannot provide the VIN or meaningful service documentation.
- The car has an unresolved recall and the seller will not arrange the free remedy.
- The inspection finds multiple deferred systems, structural damage or inconsistent mileage.
- You need predictable, low-cost transportation and have little reserve for unexpected repairs.
The S8 is most defensible as a value purchase when you are buying the condition and records, not merely the badge, engine specification or lowest listing price.
Common mistakes that turn a bargain into an expensive car
Judging every S8 by the headline specification
The 571 PS, 800 Nm and 3.8-second figures describe one published S8 TFSI configuration. They should not be copied into an advertisement for a different year or market without checking that car’s official specification.
Treating a valuation guide as a guaranteed price
The $21,300 KBB Fair Purchase Price is tied to a 2013 example and a stated validity date. Mileage, condition, location and other variables can move a real transaction substantially.

Assuming a recall means either “all cars are bad” or “the issue is irrelevant”
The 22V-178 campaign applies to certain VINs and has a defined dealer remedy. Check the individual vehicle’s record rather than generalizing from the recall to every S8.
Spending the entire budget on the purchase
Reserve money for the inspection and for repairs identified before or immediately after the sale. The available evidence does not support a single reliable ownership-cost number, so a buyer should budget conservatively instead of treating the purchase price as the full cost.
Verdict: a bargain only when the individual car earns it
The Audi S8 can deliver extraordinary published performance for a fraction of its original luxury-sedan price. The 2013 MSRP-to-KBB comparison explains the bargain narrative, but it cannot certify a particular listing. Verify the exact specification, use a current local valuation, confirm recall completion by VIN, inspect the car independently and price every documented repair before you commit.
If those checks produce a clean history and a realistic total budget, the S8 is a credible high-performance used-car value. If the seller cannot document the car or the inspection uncovers deferred work, the low sticker price is not a bargain—it is simply the first payment.
